Under the leadership of the school’s student council, a pajama drive was held to benefit Jake’s Jammies, an organization dedicated to providing pajamas to children in hospitals. Buddy Bench Students at Lee Avenue Elementary School will always have a friend to play with at recess, as a brand new Buddy Bench near the playground is encouraging camaraderie and compassion among peers. At a special assembly to
introduce the new fixture and its rules to each grade level, students learned that they can sit on the bench anytime they do not have friends to play with. Appointed Buddy Bench Monitors — students selected weekly by teachers based on good behavior
— will then come over to their peers on the bench and walk to the playground to play together. The Buddy Bench epitomizes the values of unity and benevolence that are enforced daily at Lee Avenue.
Building Bright Lights Fourth-graders at Berry Hill Elementary School in Syosset have been participating in a unique pilot project that has them shedding light on the wonder of electricity. As an extension to their unit on the subject, students are designing and constructing miniature flashlights as an enrichment project, during their library-computer period using Tinkercad, an online computer-aided design program. Once the students have finished their designs, their flashlights will be printed on the school’s 3D printer. Once the housing
for the flashlight is printed, students will use a battery and light bulb to wire a circuit that fits into the housing so they will have their own, operational self-made, keychain-sized flashlight. The Berry Hill flashlight project is one of several innovative projects being piloted in the district this year by the IDEA technology workgroup. The workgroup is comprised of teachers, administrators, parents and students whose focus is to identify technology projects that will interest, engage and inspire students to use
digital tools to invent and spur creativity. “This joint effort between our fourth grade teachers, our librarian and myself has been a chance for students to follow the design process from idea to fruition,” said Berry Hill enrichment teacher Mary Kolkhorst, who is a member of the IDEA group. “They have the unique opportunity to apply the knowledge gained throughout the unit of study to create a working reminder of what they learned.”

Scoring at State After winning 83 medals at the Science Olympiad Regional Competition in Levittown in March, a team from South Woods Middle School in Syosset took home an additional 10 medals at the New York State Science Olympiad in East Syracuse earlier this month. Competing against
35 teams from schools throughout the state, South Woods Team 40 won medals for the projects Air Trajectory, Bio-Process Laboratory, Dynamic Planet, Fossils and Microbe Mission. Additionally, the project Experimental Design finished in the top 10 in its category. Congratulations to Team

children in hospitals. According to Jake’s Jammies’ website “Something as simple as replacing a hospital gown with a cozy pair of pajamas can make all the difference for a sick child.” As a reward, each student who brought in pajamas received a
special certificate that was displayed in the school lobby. To further celebrate the effort, Principal James Connolly declared April 8th Pajama Day at the school, as students were encouraged to wear comfy jammies to class.

TESTING IT OUT - A highly magnified image of samples to be used in their research presentations has the attention of these Nassau BOCES Doshi STEM Institute students. The aspiring scientists from the Hicksville UFSD, Manpreet Kaur and Sonali Malhotra and Nabil Chowdhury used the VHX 5000 Digital Microscope to get extremely detailed images of the samples for their projects about the amount of heavy metals in plants.
COURT OF HONOR - The Eagle Scout Courts of Honor for Steven Sciglibaglio, Thomas Imbornoni II, Jonathan Eliassof and Nicholas Illuzzi of Troop 604, Bethpage was recently held at St. Martin of Tours in Bethpage. Eagle Scout is the highest honor a Boy Scout can achieve after completing hours of community service and attaining numerous merit badges.
Holy Trinity, she is the yearbook sports editor and heavily involved in the school’s STEM program. Ms. Khozouri does all this and manages to be academically ranked in the top 5 of her class with a weighted average over 100%. Mary Zarba of Island Park, a varsity soccer and lacrosse player as well as a member of the chamber orchestra and National Honor Society. Ms. Zarba is also very involved outside of school by donating her time at the National Kids Games for the Physically Challenged, Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund and Bussani mobility. Her inspiration comes from her late father, who was in a wheelchair most of his life. She does all this while maintaining a 97 average.
John Hartel of Hicksville, a member of National Honor Society with a weighted average over 95%. He also is a member of the school’s baseball and track teams and Respect Life club. At his parish, Holy Family in Hicksville, Mr. Hartel is an altar server, boy scout and volunteers at Michaels’ Angels. Lauren Sciano of Long Beach, a member of the gymnastics team and the yearbook theatre editor. Ms. Sciano also is involved at Holy Trinity as a member of stage crew, math clubs and STEM club. She is a volunteer at both St. Ignatius and St. Mary’s church in Long Beach and was a camp counselor at Camp Esopus, a summer camp for those with special needs

On April 15th, Holy Trinity High School held their annual Junior Ring Night Ceremony. Four Juniors were awarded scholarships for their senior year by the Office of Institutional Advancement. Students are nominated by the teachers and guidance counselors based on excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership and service. The four recipients who were awarded scholarships are: Emily Khozouri of Hicksville, a volleyball player who has been doing volunteer work at Michael’s Angels, Holly Patterson Nursing Home and Ronald McDonald house. At her parish, Holy Family in Hicksville, Ms. Khozouri is one of the youth leaders in their Youth Group. At

Lending Support They were bold, beautiful and bodacious; and the over 75 unique pieces of “bra art” were auctioned off for a good cause on the evening of Thursday, April 14th, at the “Bodacious Bras for a Cure” event. Caregivers, patients, survivors, healthcare workers and artists from local high schools, the North Shore Art Guild, Brookhaven Arts Council and LI Craft Guild were among some of the designers who crafted these empowering pieces of art for the event. Others were crafted or inspired by celebrity contestants like actor Ralph Macchio, NY Mets pitcher Steven Matz, former NY Jets Marty Lyons and Erik Coleman, Victoria’s Secret Angel Lindsay Ellingson, Radio personality Fingers from WBAB, the NY Yankees, the NY Islanders, and the NY Rangers. The night kicked off at the Charles B. Wang Center at Stony Brook University, where these creative bras were all on display and guests were able to put in their bid during the silent auction. The reception started with former New York Jets great Marty Lyons giving the keynote address, sharing his personal experiences with lovedones who battled cancer and thoughts on why fundraising efforts and events like “Bodacious Bras” are important in finding a cure. The auction gavel hit and the live bidding began with a bang as NFL alum Erik Coleman’s bra was auctioned off for $1,500. Between the auctions and ticket sales, the event raised nearly $35,000. The proceeds will support patient programs at Stony Brook University Cancer

Harbor Cleanup On Saturday, April 30th, the Town of Oyster Bay, the North Oyster Bay Baymen’s Association (NOBBA) and Friends of the Bay will once again join forces to sponsor the annual Oyster Bay Harbor Spring Cleanup Day. Town employees and volunteers have come out for over twenty years to roll up their sleeves and complete a thorough cleanup of the beaches and shoreline areas along Oyster Bay Harbor. All day people walk along the shoreline collecting debris, picking up trash, and even working from boats to clean up trash and remove discarded boats. This annual Cleanup Day is an inspiration to residents,
as it helps preserve the precious ecology of one of the Town’s crown jewels, Oyster Bay Harbor. Volunteers are being sought to participate in the cleanup, which will run from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Volunteers are also welcome to sign up the day of the event. The central meeting place will be Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park launching ramps, Larrabee Avenue, Oyster Bay. Each year, countless amounts of paper, food, plastics and other trash are discarded on beaches or dumped overboard from recreational and commercial vessels. trash actually takes weeks, months or even years as opposed to a few days. Last year’s Harbor Clean Up saw over forty thousand pounds of debris collected by volunteers. Allowing this litter to remain on our shorelines will only lead to increasingly worse damage for the environment. Anyone who swims, boats or fishes in Oyster Bay Harbor, or just wants to help protect and enhance the environmental integrity of this beautiful waterway, is invited to join us on April 30th. Don’t be discouraged if you can’t stay for the entire day; even a couple of hours will make a difference. Cleanup events like this will go a long way towards preserving the environment for our enjoyment and the enjoyment of future generations. I am thankful for my mom and dad. They are the water and sunlight to my plant. They’re the only true role models in my life. They pay the bills, put food in my stomach, and put clothes on my back. They are the most important things in my life. I am thankful for my mom. She is the star in my galaxy. She turned me into the nice gentlemen I am today. She fought through mental illness
two times. She taught how to act respectfully around people she puts in charge of me. She is the main reason I love to be alive. Also, if it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t be in Pal football. I wouldn’t be able deal with my grandfather’s recent trip to the E.R. I wouldn’t be able to keep going in life. Those are many reasons I am thankful for my mom. I am thankful for my dad. He’s the anchor in our ship. My dad makes
sure that the family is stable. He taught me how to defend myself, to ride a bike, and to be safe on the Internet. He makes me happy when I’m depressed. Also, he tells me what my dead grandfather expected of me. He taught me to be respectful to him and to the elderly. He gives donations to foundations for breast cancer and autism. Those are reason why I’m thankful for my dad.

The Hourglass By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There are moments that stay with you. Forever. And people, people who leave an indelible imprint on our lives, one that simply does not fade with the passage of time. How lucky we are to have those memories, those associations. How deeply we should treasure them… Time is the one thing we never seem to have quite enough of. It’s a precious commodity, one often taken for granted right up until the moment that it runs out. One day runs into the next – and we
often neglect those things and people we should have paid more attention to along the way. Be thoughtful. Be kind. Be compassionate. Each and every day, to whomever you meet, but mostly to those family and friends who are most important to you. Those are the gestures that will stand the test of time – the gatherings full of laughter and love, the conversations, the greeting cards and gifts, the time spent together. Life is destined to have its fair share of sadness; all we can do is try to minimize the regrets along the way.
Imagine how you would like to be treated, and do your best to emulate that in your interactions with others. It’s the simplest of concepts, really, but its effects are far-reaching. The most important thing is to appreciate those moments – the ones that stay with you – right then, while they are happening. You just never know when it might be the last opportunity. Such is the bittersweet nature of life; the great unknown. May we all be so fortunate to have memories worth treasuring along the way.

Learning to Skate Town of Oyster Bay residents are invited to “Learn to Skate” this summer by registering for skating lessons at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at Bethpage Community Park. Skating classes for residents are offered at the Ice Skating Center all throughout the year. This summer is a great chance for newcomers interested in learning how to ice skate or for veteran skaters looking to strengthen their abilities.
Registration for Series 5 (April 30th through June 26th) is available at the rink, online (www. TheRinx.com) or by phone at 516.797.4126. The “Learn to Skate” program offers group skating lessons to beginners through advanced levels. Skaters are paired based on age and skill, ranging from pre-school and basic skills through advanced levels. The program is eight weeks in length for the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday classes and
seven weeks long for the Monday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday classes. All classes are 30 minutes in length. For residents, the fee is $135 for the session. For non-residents the fee is $175. The “Learn to Skate” schedule is: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon, Saturdays from 11:50 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. and Sundays from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. There will be no classes on Sunday May

Building Up Skills
The fourth- and fifthgrade Argonauts at Central Boulevard School in the Bethpage School District were challenged by teacher Lorraine Marcis to create a dam that could meet certain criteria. Working in small groups, the young engineers researched dams, planned
and sketched what they thought would be the best solution, planned their materials, and finally built and tested their design. Materials included sponges, rocks, clay, sand and straws. The completed dam was required to be able to hold one liter of water for 30 seconds,

Writing Contest Winner
The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District is proud to announce H.B. Mattlin Middle School sixth-grade student Michael Detres was recently selected as a winner of a national writing contest sponsored by Scholastic’s Storyworks
Magazine. Michael is one of only ten winners nationwide. The competition, “Write to Win: Mt. Saint Helens,” challenged students to pretend they were a park ranger at Mount Saint Helens today and to write a letter warning
visitors that volcanoes are unpredictable. Michael’s writing piece was inspired by a classroom project in Michael’s sixthgrade English-Language Arts class. Teacher Carolyn Loiacono brought this experience to Michael’s class, aiming to teach students about the process of writing and editing a nonfiction story. As part of the lesson, students analyzed a nonfiction article, “Mountain of Fire: The Eruption of Mount St. Helens,” by Lauren Tarshis. To acknowledge Michael being chosen as a winner of the national competition, Storyworks Magazine associate editor Tash Kouri sent him a congratulatory letter along with a personalized copy of Patricia Lauber’s book, Volcano.
