Problem Solving / Decision Making Many articles, books and seminars have covered this subject. In addition, some local schools offer courses like this as part of their adult education series. This still leaves a large majority of folks who have never been exposed to this topic, who would benefit highly from it. If you are one them, and would like to have a simple, easy-to-use method to solve problems, please read on... In this world of fast-paced living, with all of its daily turbulence, we are faced with a dizzying array of problems and challenges that need to be addressed in a short period of time. To name a few: • A host of money problems, including how much you spend within your budget and what adjustments might need to be made. • What to buy for a really good friend, but one with very expensive taste. • Whether now is a good time to make a major purchase, such as a house or even a new car. The following is a step-by-step procedure on how to solve problems and improve your decision making process. Before proceeding, I must caution you to leave your emotions behind (not an easy

task when faced with certain decisions that are near and dear to your heart). Let’s begin with each step in the sequence: Identify the problem. We need a new roof, but are not sure how to proceed. Should we buy now or wait? List possible decision factors. How long will the current one last? What will a new roof cost? Which models are now on sale? Check warranties on each. What store should we buy it in? Check any special credit terms. Develop alternative solutions. The current roof is beginning to have small leaks developing. There are several models on sale now in a wide price range. A blackcolored roof is always the least expensive, but several other colors are very nice and cost approximately 15% more. We have checked out several appliance stores and, while prices vary slightly among them, if possible, we would like to stay with the appliance store we have dealt with previously. All of the models have a oneyear warranty on parts and labor. The store we have always dealt with has offered a special credit deal with no interest due for the first 18 months. The other store (our second choice) has already stated that, if

we buy from him, we would probably “get a better deal.” Narrow your options. Clearly, additional follow-up was needed. We went back to the first dealer, who gave us a 10% discount on the roof tiles and offered us the colored roof tiles at no additional cost. The only problem was that he could not install the roofing for another three weeks. We went back to our second choice dealer, who could install in two days but made no further concessions. A decision was clearly needed. Finding the right solution. We ended up selecting the first dealer. Although he could not install our roofing tiles for three weeks, he was going to give us an additional cash discount and a special credit deal. This, plus the fact that we had dealt with him before, closed the sale. The second dealer’s offer was tempting, especially the two-day delivery, but we did not take it. As you have seen, having an organized flow of guidelines to follow when making decisions is crucial to saving time and effort. Friends of Karen

Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families. This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost. To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. Saturday will be a 5K and Sunday will be a 10K. As she stood aghast, he expressed his love and desire to spend the rest of his life with the woman before him, saying he could think of no more appropriate venue to pop the question than on a runway in the midst of bridal week. Judging by the standing ovation delivered by the crowd - among them, the family of the blushing bride-to-be - it seemed he couldn’t have picked a more opportune moment, one they will surely treasure forever. Bridal business aside, we managed to squeeze in some sightseeing on what happened to be one of the warmest days we have been graced with so far this season. From the Flatiron District over to the West Village, we traversed a solid six miles or so of the downtown area, taking in the nuances of each neighborhood and - of

Of Weddings & Wandering Just last weekend, I was able to satisfy my urge for a little springtime strolling in the city when the opportunity arose to accompany a friend from college to several New York Bridal Fashion Week runway shows. While I was initially far more interested in the aimless wandering aspect of the day, I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by the experience of attending these avant-garde displays. Never having heard of the featured designers prior to seeing their latest collections in person, they proved to be quite impressive. Sure, I could have done without the crowns of flowers as accent, and I’m fairly certain I will not be accessorizing any future bridal gowns with high-top sneakers; but, quirks aside, some of the styles were quite stunning when viewed more as works of art rather than practical fashion. At the close of one of the shows, the audience was caught

course - finding time to snap some photos along the way. It was during an ill-fated “selfie” attempt in front of the Flatiron Building that a kind woman took pity on us and offered to take the photo, saying, “I know it’s probably taboo to walk up to random strangers and volunteer to take their picture, but you two seemed like you could use a little help.” Why yes, we could indeed. Score one for acts of kindness from fellow tourists. In all, it was a day short on the sort of haphazard adventure which has become the norm with most New York City day trips I have ventured on; actually, quite seamless. It’s funny, the tendency to almost miss the chaos when things go according to plan. I’ll have to remind myself of that irony the next time I’m traipsing 50 blocks out of the way to make a reservation at the third restaurant on the list, while carrying my shoes.

Local Artist Chosen Elaine Faith Thompson, a Long Island native from Bohemia, is back at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. The United States Golf Association has chosen her as one of several artists who will paint a limitededition, fine-art print commemorating the 2018 U.S. Open Championship. The 118th U.S. Open will be contested June 14th17th, at Shinnecock Hills in Southampton. Thompson felt honored to receive the phone call on December 6th and to have been commissioned to paint the golf course for the 118th U.S. Open Championship. She spent the following two days photographing the magnificent golf course and clubhouse. Given her roots, Thompson has worked on many paintings for USGA championships in Long Island and the New York Metropolitan area. Her first golf painting was of Bethpage State Park’s Black Course for the 2002 U.S. Open. She also worked with the USGA on posters for the 2004 U.S. Open at

Shinnecock Hills, the 2006 U.S. Open at Winged Foot Golf Club, the 2009 U.S. Open at Bethpage Black and the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open at Sebonack Golf Club. Limited edition prints will be available soon. Thompson is also well known for her New York and Long Island scenic works, including: lighthouses; The Big Duck; Theodore Roosevelt’s home at Sagamore Hill; Fire Island; Riverhead Raceway and the Peconic River; Aqueduct and Roosevelt Raceways; Smithtown Bull; Downtown Sayville and Schoolhouse; Mount Sinai Garden; Lady Golfer at Timber Point Timber; and the Statue of Liberty. Her portraits include “Pope Francis in America,” Derek Jeter, John Heisman, and George Washington at Valley Forge. Her other portraits are of pets, houses, cars, boats, motorcycles and planes, all painted in selected scenes. At the reception Thompson will also be displaying other art including very affordable prints which

make great personalized gifts for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. Thirty students from Nassau BOCES Barry Tech earned top honors at the New York State Regional SkillsUSA Conference this year. One student was assigned as a SkillsUSA Officer for the region. The competition is part of a national series of events that SkillsUSA sponsors as part of its mission to provide our country with a competitive, skilled workforce. Sydney Inger, a senior at East Meadow High School, is a recipient of the 2018 Good Deed Awards for Long Island Teenagers demonstrating significant achievement, excellence, effectiveness and creativity, and serving as a positive and inspiring role model to her peers and the community. The National Committee for Furtherance of Jewish Education of Nassau County sponsors the award, and Sydney will be honored on May 10 during an awards ceremony at Congregation Beth Sholom Chabad in Mineola. Sydney is in the top 5 percent of her class with a weighted grade point average of 103. In addition to taking honors, Advanced Placement and college-level courses, she is a member of seven honor societies. She also contributed to the varsity softball team’s clinching of the New York State championship this

past year. As president of Students Against Destructive Decisions, she has contributed to the growth of the club through a comprehensive peer-topeer education program, focusing on helping teenagers make positive decisions. Sydney is also a Peer Mentor, offering advice and support and serving as a role model for younger students, as well as one of the school’s 35 Peer Leaders. She also serves as Yearbook Committee photographer, and as a junior, was recognized as an East Meadow Champion; a student recognition program designed to highlight students who consistently make positive contributions to the school community. In her spare time, Sydney participates in the Plainedge Challenger Program, which assists physically disabled students in playing sports. She also volunteers

with the Long Island Harvest Food Pantry, an organization close to her heart. “Most people don’t know that there are residents in the community who go to bed hungry every day,” she said. Sydney will attend James Madison University in Virginia this fall and plans on studying graphic design. Guidance counselor Joanna Silberman described Sydney as a student who has confidence and selfassurance, and is mature beyond her years. “Sydney is someone you can trust and rely on,” she said. “She strives for perfection in everything she does, but with humility and confidence.” The East Meadow School District congratulates Sydney on this outstanding accomplishment.

Music Program Recognized The National Association of Music Merchants and the University of Kansas have named the Hicksville Public School District a 2018 Best Community for Music Education. This prestigious distinction is earned by school districts that exhibit extraordinary efforts and commitment toward maintaining music education as part of the schools’ core curriculum, and excel in their instruction of music and extensive array of

programs. Each year, Hicksville students are fixtures in the Nassau Music Educators Association’s All-County Music ensembles and the Long Island String Music Festival select ensembles and concerts. The district’s music curriculum emphasizes the development of aesthetic sensitivity, self-expression, teamwork and creativity through the examination and experience of this performing art.

Ecological Excellence The Hicksville High School Ecology Club received a special visit from Sue Watins, a representative of the Sierra Club who conducted a presentation about climate change. As part of the interactive

program, students explored how humans impact climate change and the interconnections of its effects by engaging in discussion and working together to present their findings. Watins, who has presented on four separate

occasions and participated in three district-sponsored wellness fairs, helped reinforce the club’s lessons about the importance of caring for the planet and treating it with respect.

two-week Pick a Reading Partner program, which ran from March 5th-16th. Sponsored by the PTA, McVey’s PARP program invited students to delve into the world of literature and engage in reading activities inspired by this year’s theme, “The Giving Tree.” Among those who read to the students in grades K-6 were Assemblyman

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone today announced that the Town of Oyster Bay is participating in a 2018 Soldier Collection Drive in an effort to gather needed supplies to be sent to the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces serving around the globe. The drive will take place Tuesday, May 1st through Friday, July 6th. “The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to support our hometown heroes by collecting supplies for those stationed around the globe,” said Councilman Macagnone. “Each year, residents and Town employees open their hearts and wallets to purchase muchneeded supplies for those protecting the freedoms we hold dear. This program serves as an important reminder to our uniformed service personnel that their daily sacrifices are not forgotten.”

present,” she said. The students embraced the yoga techniques, including the cobra, cat, downward facing dog and extended side angle poses. Many of the participants had never practiced yoga before, but were enthusiastic about incorporating the exercise into their current health regimes.

Creating Community Connections Community came alive for second-grade students at Central Boulevard Elementary School in the Bethpage Union Free School District as they enjoyed a number of enriching presentations led by community members of multiple professions

during Community Helper Day. The annual event introduced students to the various positions held by community members within the district. Composed of a collection of parent and community volunteers, students

attended presentations by dental hygienists, the local fire department, nurses, pediatricians, police officers and a veterinarian, among others. The all-day event served as an excellent connection to the curriculum unit on communities.

Students in East Meadow High School’s Civil War class, as well as members of the school’s Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society and Model Congress, received a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to attend a three-day American History Tour, in March, that included visits to New York City, Philadelphia and Gettysburg. During the tour, the 24 students visited Lower Manhattan’s Freedom Tower and National September 11

Memorial & Museum, as well as Philadelphia’s Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. They also went on a ghost tour and battlefield tours in Gettysburg. Sheena Rachel Jacobs, social studies chairperson at the high school, said the purpose of the trip was to bring history alive for students and help them better understand the nation’s founding fathers. “[The students] came to understand the founding fathers’ trials

and tribulations, their willingness to learn and persevere, and how they held steadfast to civic duty,” Jacobs explained. “They now realize how America became the successful democratic nation it is, due to our founding fathers.” Be Happy Pleasure is Nature’s test, her sign of approval.
