The Week That Was By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Let’s try something different for a change. Instead of waiting until the eleventh hour to compose my thoughts for the week, I’ve decided to jot down a bit each day, with hopes that these random ramblings will gel into a somewhat coherent theme. Sounds just abstract enough to work. Monday… The weekly “fresh start” we all seek, yet are often disappointed by about 10 minutes into. For me, the perfect opportunity to catch up on the avalanche of e-mails that have surely accumulated over the weekend, while methodically trying to plan the remainder of the week’s activities. A quick scan of social media says everyone is still buzzing about last night’s
highly anticipated season premiere of Game of Thrones. Me, I’m still working my way through the series of five larger-than-life books. Tuesday… Into the fray again, trying to keep pace with the workflow in preparation for my day off on Friday, yet another reason to get a jump on that column. Nothing but rain and clouds outside, which makes for a decidedly dreary disposition. But, I suppose such an atmosphere is far more conducive to accomplishing tasks on the endless To Do list. Better not to be tempted by the sun’s rays, beckoning you to take an extended lunch. Wednesday… Yet another lovely day in the neighborhood, or so I briefly glimpsed on my way into the office. Word is it’s 66º and sunny. One of these days, this
kind of weather will coincide with a weekend. Maybe. But alas, here I sit at my keyboard, typing away at the local community news and events. Summer fun in the sun can’t come soon enough. Thursday… The eleventh hour. One day short of a deadline; for me, tomorrow will be spent helping to run the Society of Professional Journalists’ Annual Region I Conference, this year hosted by Hofstra University and sponsored by our very own Press Club of Long Island. A full schedule of panels and lectures by some of the region’s finest journalists is on tap, a muchneeded reminder of why it was I became involved in this field to begin with. And so, I’m off. Stay tuned for a full recap of the conference next week!

On Saturday, April 25th, the Town of Oyster Bay, the North Oyster Bay Baymen’s Association (NOBBA) and Friends of the Bay will, once again, join forces to sponsor the annual Oyster Bay Harbor Fall Cleanup Day, according to Town Councilman Anthony Macagnone. For over twenty years, Town employees and volunteers have rolled up their sleeves and completed a thorough cleanup of beaches and shoreline areas along Oyster Bay harbor. All day, people walk along the shoreline collecting debris, picking up trash, and even working from boats, cleaning up trash and discarded boats. This annual Cleanup Day is an inspiration to residents, to help preserve the precious ecology of one of the Town’s crown jewels, Oyster Bay Harbor. Volunteers are being sought to participate in the cleanup, which will run from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Individuals and groups who are interested can get further information by calling the Town’s Department of Environmental Resources at 516.677.5853. Volunteers are also welcome to sign up the day of the event. The central meeting place will be Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park launching ramps, Larrabee Avenue, Oyster Bay. By the end of each year, tons of paper, food, plastics and other trash are left on beaches or dumped overboard from recreational and commercial vessels. Contrary to what people may believe, debris does not immediately disintegrate, but actually takes weeks, months or even years. The longer

Third-graders at J. Irving Baylis Elementary School recently brought history “to life” at its fourth annual wax museum. From politicians, musicians and scientists, to actors and actresses, the third-graders dressed as famous historic individuals. They posed behind velvet ropes with museum music playing in the background - as if they were wax figures during the special event. After the wax museum, parents and guests were invited to listen to speeches written
by each student about their chosen figure. As part of the thirdgrade reading unit on biographies, students researched historical characters, learned about their accomplishments, challenges and personality and explained how their actions contributed to the sequence of events in their lives. Two sophomore students from the Nassau BOCES Doshi STEM Institute were among the top contenders in a recent, regional science competition. Jorge Gomez from the Hicksville UFSD and Matt Fusco from the Oyster Bay-East Norwich CSD presented their winning research at the STEM Diversity Summit at Farmingdale State College, earning third place from among more than 80 competitors. The teen scientists’ project, Biodiversity Analysis of Weeds in Nassau County, required hours of field research along sidewalks and roads collecting samples. The students then took those samples to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory for DNA coding. Their goal
was to find specific species and define where they are localized, laying the groundwork for future research into specific methods to remove them. “We’re helping the community by stopping the ruination of the roads,” Jorge said of their research. “We’re making sidewalks and roads safer for everyone.” His partner, Matt, pointed out that “it was difficult to collect some of the samples. The work was challenging,” Matt said, “but overall it was a good experience.” The STEM Diversity Summit drew nearly a thousand attendees from local industry, education and communities. Students from grades 8-12 shared their research and demonstrated best
practices in STEM, and heard from national and regional specialists on important STEM industry topics, such as sustainable energy technology and biotechnology. “Experiences like this are prime examples of the reason the Doshi STEM Institute was established,” Principal Dr. AJ Hepworth said of the research project and the students’ presentation of their findings at the summit. “Jorge and Matt are committed students who apply themselves to furthering their studies. Their research could lead to improvements in the management of Long Island’s ecosystem. I am proud of their accomplishments.”

Students of the Plainview-Old Bethpage School (POB) District recently hosted a district and community-wide Celebration of Diversity at POB Middle School. The District’s ESL (English as a Second Language) department hosted the event as an opportunity for students and their families to learn about different cultures and heritage.
Students from Kindergarten through twelfth grade researched a particular country of origin, created engaging presentations for the community and prepared cultural foods to taste. International students presented their personal stories involving their native culture and their journey to the United States. During the event,
community vendors provided multicultural food, face painting and performed a martial arts demonstration. Students also participated in a cultural scavenger hunt. The event presented students with insight to diversity and native cultures from over 14 different countries including Japan, India and Israel.

Students from the Plainview-Old Bethpage (POB) School District recently participated in the 3rd Annual St. Baldrick’s Fundraising Event at H.B. Mattlin Middle School where over 100 students, faculty and members of the Plainview community raised approximately
$32,000 for childhood cancer research. Students from the POB elementary schools, middle schools and high school began fundraising over a month before the event to break the previous donation record. Event attendees volunteered to shave their
heads in show of support for cancer awareness and childhood cancer research. POB John F. Kennedy High School Principal James Murray and H.B. Mattlin Middle School Principal Christopher Donarummo also shaved their heads in support of this lifechanging organization.

Michelle Kriegel, of Farmingville, and Jessica Zuniga, a resident of Bethpage – both members of the professional staff at Farmingdale State College and alumnae – have been named by the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce as among Long Island’s top “30 Young Professionals Under 30” for 2015. The 7th annual awards – which will be presented by the Chamber on May 6th at Crest Hollow Country Club – honor those who make a notable impact in their business, industry, and community. Honorees are from the private and public sectors, government, and not-for-profits. She has worked at the college for nearly two years, and
during that time she has helped double the number of Farmingdale students studying abroad. She was a study-abroad student herself, spending semesters in Florence, Italy and Barcelona, Spain. She holds a BS in Business Management from Farmingdale. Ms. Zuniga is a member of the college’s Alumni Association Board, and founding chair of the GOLD (Graduates of the Last Decade) alumni group. She is also a member of the Moxxie Network, a women’s business community comprised of senior-level business and professional women. “To win this award at such an early stage of my career is an honor,” Ms. Zuniga says. “This gives me a sense of affirmation in my role here.”

Mary Bhullar, President of Worldnet International, an express courier service headquartered in Springfield Gardens, learned about Friends of Karen when one of her employees saw hundreds of people wearing the team shirts out on the course of the Long Island Marathon in 2011. Together they decided to motivate employees to sign up to help raise funds and awareness for Friends of Karen and for the past three years many of their employees trained together to do the 10K event.

Continued From 14 “Each year, post-event, there was not only a sense of accomplishment in helping the families of Friends of Karen but a significant positive shift in how our staff were relating to one another.” This year, soon after the employees starting mapping out their training course, one of them shared that a colleague had a child diagnosed with cancer and sent them directly to Friends of Karen for assistance. “We witnessed first-hand how they respond so earnestly to families in need,” said Ms. Bhullar. Funds raised from the Walk-Run will directly benefit families who are assisted by Friends of Karen’s Family Support program which helps with household bills, health insurance, medical copayments prescriptions,
hospital lodging costs, transportation to and from medical treatments and so much more. Since 1978, Friends of Karen has been providing emotional, financial and advocacy support for children with a lifethreatening illness and their families in order to keep them stable, functioning and able to cope. The organization has helped more than 13,500 children in the New York tri-state region. “The concept of corporate social responsibility helps to

Parade Of Posters
During their library/ computer classes, students in grades 3-5 at Walt Whitman Elementary School learned about Internet safety with an emphasis on cyberbullying as part of a “Parade of Posters” project. They were instructed to not
share personal information and passwords or answer unknown emails. The discussion also focused on behaviors of a cyberbully, including hurtful online behavior, impersonation and rumor spreading. The students were encouraged to

CELEBRATING DIFFERENCES - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto and members of the Town Board recently joined Jennifer Quinn, her husband Danny Quinn, and their children Aiden & Wyatt in celebrating April as the “Upper Differences Month” in the Town of Oyster Bay. Jennifer Quinn is the President and Founder of Limbastic, an organization that provides support and resources to families of children with upper limb disabilities. Declaring April to be “Upper Limb Differences Month” is meant to raise awareness in the challenges faced by family members who have upper limb disabilities.
