Random Rambles By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s been a rough year. Less than four months in and, well, I know many people who are already looking for a do-over. Sure, every period of time has its ups and downs, highs and lows. But honestly, since the moment the ball dropped in Times Square this past New Year’s Eve, it seems that everything began falling right along with it. At least it’s Spring. There is something uplifting about sunshine-filled afternoons and flower blossoms that does bring a smile to the face, however fleeting it may be. And of course, those sunworshippers among us have to be looking forward to
summer and beach outings and barbeques. But until then… It’s April. April 15th, to be exact, as I write these words. Tax Day (although, technically speaking, we were graced with a few extra days tacked on to the filing deadline this year). The Easter Bunny has come and gone. Baseball diamonds are abuzz with activity. Pretty soon, school will be out of session and the parks and pools will be flooded with families having fun. And so it goes. From dawn until dusk, one season into the next, day after day, week after week, month after month; until, before you know it, a decade has passed in the blink of an eye. In just a couple of
weeks, I will be celebrating my 11th year as editor and columnist at this very paper. How much has changed in that span of time… The best thing we can do – the only thing, really – is to embrace each day, with all its nuances, and appreciate whatever it may bring into our respective lives. The list of things beyond our control is endless; the key to happiness lies in how we react to them, what we learn from them, and how we use them to better ourselves as individuals. I’m no philosopher, but that much I’ve picked up in my 33 years roaming this planet. Here’s wishing everyone a brighter tomorrow… and the day after… and the day after…

Holy Family School held its third annual Schoolwide Retreat Day on the Wednesday before Easter. The entire student body, faculty and staff began the day together with the celebration of mass. After Mass, the fifth through eighth grade students gathered in the school gym to listen to Kevin Becker as he told his personal miracle story. Younger students watched an age appropriate Easter
themed movie in their classrooms. Classes were then separated into groups. As one group ate lunch, students in the second group created a personal design on a puzzle piece. The pieces were then put together on the front windows of school symbolizing how we are all important pieces of the Holy Family School puzzle. The third group prayed together as everyone took turns and signed their
name on a large wooden cross promising to be more understanding of the burdens or crosses that other people carry every day. Obviously, each group rotated to each station. The day ended in church with a select group of seventh graders performing the Living Stations of the Cross for the school community. The cross that everyone signed was used during this presentation and will be kept in our school.

Syosset High School welcomed seven survivors of the Holocaust for a day of reflection, remembrance and respect for one another. Coordinated by Social Studies Administrative Assistant Thomas Fusco, Library Media Specialist Lynn Ortlieb and teacher Richard Cafiero, Holocaust Remembrance Day brought 10th-graders together at different times of the day to listen to compelling
presentations and testimony from speakers/survivors Annie Bleiberg, Gloria Gantz, Alex Konstantyn, Mordechai Miller, Werner Reich, Irving Roth and Mireille Taub. Some of the speakers brought images of the Holocaust to help illustrate this tragic time in world history. Every speaker emphasized the importance of respecting others, including those of different ethnic and religious backgrounds.

Hicksville Public School District honored the community’s senior citizens during its 24th annual Spring Senior Citizen Luncheon at the high school. The guests were served delicious meals by studentvolunteers in a ballroomtype setting in one of the school’s gymnasiums, and were also treated to
remarkable performances by student-musicians, including “New York, New York” by the jazz ensemble; a duet of “I Can’t Help Myself” by student-vocalists; and “Bop Talk” by the saxophone quartet. Selections from the high school theater department’s production of “Spamalot” were then presented, and the special
guests also had the opportunity to appreciate students’ incredible visual artwork that was featured throughout the gymnasium. The luncheon served as a way for students to showcase their talents and foster a bond with valued members of the Hicksville community.

Following their respective finishes at the recent Long Island Science and Engineering Fair and the New York State Science and Engineering Fair, Syosset High School students Mohamed ElAbtah and Sarah Lee have qualified for the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, to be held in Phoenix, Arizona in May. LISEF and NYSSEF serve as qualifying fairs for Intel ISEF. Overall, 21 Syosset High School students received awards at these fairs for their work.
Mohamed won first place in Biomedical Health Sciences at LISEF for his project that explored alternatives to chemotherapy when treating liver cancer and hepatitis. He conducted his research at Mount Sinai Hospital’s Bio Repository. Sarah won first place in Chemistry at NYSSEF for her research on alternative ways to block pain receptors in the body absent of side effects and consequences associated with over-thecounter medications. She conducted her research at Stony Brook University.

Enrollment in the program has quadrupled over the last three year with 61% of matches recommitting to a second year in the program. LICADD’s BUDDY Mentoring Program provides children with a positive adultchild relationship on a stable and predictable basis. The BUDDY Program’s goals are to enhance the protective factors in children of parents incarcerated by helping them to create predictable and attached relationships with one or more adults; promote and facilitate participation by underserved youth in educational and cultural activities that enhance their academic, cultural and social competency skills, build self-esteem and
develop self-confidence. These activities provide opportunities for our children to learn respect for diverse cultures, avoid unsafe and destructive behaviors including gang participation, bullying and experimentation with drugs and alcohol and to ensure that young people’s risk factors are identified and addressed promptly through direct service provision and/ or referrals to ancillary services. This program further facilitates the delivery of a wide range of support services to at-risk children of incarcerated parents helping to break the multi-generational cycle incarceration frequently fueled by addiction. “We are so grateful to the Richard & Mary Morrison Foundation for supporting this important program. LICADD will continue to work with partner agencies to bring about
increased support for these most vulnerable children.” says Executive Director Steve Chassman.
