Five Schools Advance Teen entrepreneurs from 63 local high schools competed in the Finals of the eighth annual Long Island Virtual Enterprises (LI VE) Business Plan Competition. Five of those teams will advance to the National Business Plan Competition, held at the Microsoft Technology Center and Pier 92 in New York Citythis month. These five teams will represent LI VE at the nationals in NYC on

Monday, April 16th and Tuesday, April 17th, 2018. Finalists were determined by their combined performance in the oral and written presentations of their firm’s business plans. Each day of the robust Trade Show event, nearly 1,000 students marketed their firm’s virtual goods and services, and networked with students, business leaders and college mentors from across the metro

Don’t Forget the Tomatoes I have recently taken to food shopping more frequently, with the intention of picking up “just a few things” during each visit to the grocery store, eliminating the need for a cart and - theoretically - such a large expense in one shot. The cost, well, it depends on the particular outing and what items are on the menu. The cart… let’s just say I have yet to master the art of consolidating my purchases to one of those convenient little hand baskets they provide by the front entrance. Case in point: on my last trip to one of my favorite food stores, I meandered through the aisles selecting a bit of this and that. At about the halfway point, as I was nearing the deli counter, I noticed that my basket was nearly overflowing. The gentleman taking my cold cut order seemed to note the same fact simultaneously,

remarking, Are you gonna carry all that?? I’m going to try, I replied with a smile, while bracing my basket on the edge of the shelving in front of me. My order complete, I continued on my way into the next section of the store, surveying the shelves to determine how many more items I could possibly carry. As I contemplated, I felt a tap on the shoulder. I turned to find a man standing with my cold cuts, those just purchased several steps back, in hand, apparently having fetched them from the floor behind me. Whoops. On to the produce section, where I attempted to juggle tomatoes while picking out cucumbers. And there they went, rolling down the aisle, nearly taking out a young mother and her child. Mom, it’s a little red ball!

the girl squealed, taking off after the tomato. Oh my, I’m so sorry! I hurriedly gathered up the rogue produce and headed to checkout, resigned to the fact that I simply could not carry one more thing. There, I was met with a similarly bewildered look from the cashier, who watched as I piled my merchandise onto the conveyer belt, one item at a time. Do you have bags? she asked. Why yes, yes I do, three in fact. She chuckled, Three bags and no cart? Yes, I replied sheepishly. Yes, I recognize the irony in that. After my total was calculated {not quite as inexpensive as planned}, the cashier said Here’s a tip: even if you think you’re only running in for a gallon of milk, take a cart. Always. Take a cart. One day, I’ll learn.

Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families. This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost. To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. Saturday will be a 5K and Sunday will be a 10K. They are looking for people to join their Friends of Karen team and to

cross the finish line knowing they’re making a difference in the lives of many. If you are interested in participating in either or both of these races with colleagues, as a family or individually, you can sign up today! Additionally, if you are interested in volunteering your time preparing for the event - handing out t-shirts, making sure every participant has what he or she needs, etc.; or at the event - taking photos for promotional purposes, you can do so. Moving Forward and receive a great deal of satisfaction in seeing their mentees begin to develop their talents within the company culture. It’s important to remember that those nearing retirement are not the only ones suitable as mentors; it can be anyone in the ranks who knows the company well and has the motivation to take on the role of mentor. From a Social/Personal Standpoint: In contrast to a business environment, mentoring on a personal level is much less structured and provides a wonderful sense of satisfaction for both the mentor and mentee. It tends to reveal a broader picture where mentoring can begin at birth and continue on until death. Let’s start with the birth of a baby. Those of you who have experienced it will always know the joy of having guided the newborn into all phases of being, including feeding, cuddling, protecting and being part of the wonderful aspect of bringing a child into the world. In effect, you have mentored through each early phase. Moving forward, do you remember a time when you held the child’s legs as he/she took the very first steps? Or the time when the big moment arrived and you took the training wheels off the bike? Just think of the mentoring you freely gave, and then the

feeling afterwards of accomplishment for both you and your child. Are you ready to move on to their teenage years? Do you recall setting guidelines of when they had to be home? And, when the curfew was broken, how you patiently explained why these rules were necessary? The point is that your family mentoring was to assure that all your children grew up within family traditions. Let’s move on to your later years as an adult. It is at this point where you will have experienced both being mentored by a person and establishing a mentoring relationship with another individual. Here are just a few examples of you being mentored by another: When you need a friend and someone is there for you; when you are having difficulties with a relationship and you chat with someone you trust; when you try to cope with helping your elderly parents and turn to a trusted friend in the same situation (before seeking professional help); when you are feeling ill for an extended period of time and seek the advice of a trusted family physician. I am currently going through a mentoring experience of my own. Several years ago, I was the manager of a sales group with three area sales manager reporting to me. At that

time, I mentored each one, with good results. Years later, one of these managers lost his job due to a reorganization. He contacted me with a request to help him with his resume, seeking advice on how to live under the strain of being unemployed and other factors. We speak every day; his revised resume is complete and being circulated to the proper people, and the results make us both feel good about ourselves. This is a prime example of mentoring at its best. All you need to do is reverse the above situation and you will realize that, in each scenario, you were probably mentored by another person as well. A good example is to observe newlyweds in their daily lives. They are always holding hands, laughing together, supporting each other in every way. In an exemplary relationship, a married couple celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary will exhibit many of the same traits. Point made. In summary, you have now seen the power of mentoring, whether you are being mentored or are in the process of mentoring someone else. Make the most of it, and move forward with success.

To start, although there are numerous definitions on the subject, let’s define mentoring as a bond between two people whose purpose is to develop and foster growth in the relationship. Let us then define the roles that each person takes. The mentor is the person who initiates the relationship in a supporting role. The mentee is the person being mentored. The act of being mentored was something you most likely experienced in your early childhood. In your later years, you took on the role of the mentor and, without consciously knowing it, you continue to be in that role almost every day. Let’s delve into the subject from both a business point of view and then take a look at how it affects you personally. From a Business Viewpoint: Through the years, leaders in both the government and business sectors began to recognize the strategic importance of mentoring young employees who have just started their careers. For example, they would select senior employees with a good track record nearing the end of their employment as potential mentors. These folks, with a deep knowledge of the company and its operations, make excellent mentors

Luck of the Leprechauns A creative project at Central Boulevard Elementary School in the Bethpage School District brought grade levels together as Debra Lange and Linda DeMaria’s firstgrade class collaborated with Barbara Cataldi’s fourth-graders to engineer a leprechaun trap using recycled materials. Working in teams, the

students drafted blueprints of their designs and identified which materials they would use to trap the cunning character of Irish folklore. To build their contraptions, they brought in materials from home such as cereal boxes, tissue boxes and shoeboxes. After drawing up their plans, the teams constructed the traps out

of their everyday items, adding decorative touches with glitter, stickers, construction paper and pipe cleaners. They presented their devices to their peers, explaining how the levers, axles and doors would capture the leprechaun. Many projects included gold coins to lure the Irish fairy into the trap. CHALLENGER KICKOFF - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently joined with coaches, players and parents for the opening day ceremony of the Plainview Little League Baseball Challenger Program. Challenger Baseball is a Little Leaguesanctioned program established in 1989 that gives physically and mentally challenged children the opportunity to play baseball.

Senior Signs On Surrounded by proud family members, school district administrators and his coach, Bethpage High School senior Michael Lane signed a national letter of intent to play volleyball at St. Joseph’s College, Brooklyn campus. In his volleyball career, Michael has earned

All-County and AllTournament titles and made it to the county finals with his team. Along with taking Advanced Placement and college-level courses, he is a member of Athletes Helping Athletes, Student Civic, and the National and Foreign Language honor societies. He also runs

spring track. In addition to playing volleyball, he intends to study accounting at St. Joseph’s. The district congratulates Michael and wishes him success in his athletic and academic pursuits in college.

Bethpage High School’s varsity kickline team, Golden Girls and Co., has accomplished a first in school history by competing in all four final rounds of the 2018 National Dance Alliance High School National Championship and earning first place in the small varsity kick division. They also won the Innovative Choreography Award for their kick routine. Leading up to nationals, which were held in Orlando, Florida in early March, the team submitted a video of their routine that qualified them for the competition. In January, Golden Girls and Co. scored highly at the NDA Regional Competition at Walt Whitman High School, taking home first place in kick, second in

pom, and third in both jazz and team performance. “We’ve been hoping for this [win] since we were on JV,” said senior Gabby McGlynn. “Not a lot of seniors get to say they won nationals, and it feels like fate that we got to be those seniors to lead the team there.” Senior Francesca Conte, one of the team’s captains, recalled the hard work, determination and perseverance she put forth in pushing her team along the way to nationals. “We had two minutes to prove ourselves,” she said. “You have to put it out there and leave it all on the floor.” The team continued its winning streak at the Nassau Scholastic Kickline Championships at Nassau Community College, where they won the Grand

Championship in the kick category and earned second place in pom and jazz, and fourth in team performance. The Grand Championship award is given to the team that has the highest cumulative score from three previous Scholastic competitions in a specific category. “From the beginning of the year, the team’s goal was to make it to the finals in all four categories at nationals,” said coach Ashley Ioveno. “We wanted them to set goals, work to achieve them, push themselves and reap the benefits of hard work.” The district congratulates the team and coaches Ioveno and Jeanna Martina for a remarkable season and an NDA National Championship title.

Olympiad Teams Compete Congratulations to the Syosset High School Science Olympiad team Scioly, and the South Woods Middle School Science Olympiad team for advancing to the state Science Olympiad to be held at East Syracuse Minoa High School, April

13th-14th. Scioly claimed the top spot at the Nassau Eastern Regional and placed seventh out of the 55 teams that qualified for the state-level competition in regional play (including only 16 high school teams from Long Island).

Student Sonnets Congratulations to Syosset High School’s Allison Lin, who is the winner of the Long Island Theatre Collective’s Romeo and Juliet sonnet competition. Allison wrote a sonnet that was recited by cast members of the organization’s recent

production of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” performed at the Cultural Playhouse in Syosset. In addition to having her work recited on the big stage, Allison was presented with a prize by the Long Island Theatre Collective

for her award-winning sonnet. The Collective is a theater company dedicated to providing professional, vibrant, evocative, challenging performances with the goal of advancing theater and enriching the local community.

Syosset High School students won 16 different awards between the recent Long Island Science and Engineering Fair and the New York State Science and Engineering Fair. Additionally, senior Radhika Patel has advanced to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair to be held at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh on May 17th. Radhika won first place in the Biomedical and Health Science category at LISEF, qualifying her for entry into ISEF. Her research validated the use of the drug riluzole to treat hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia, a disease that ruptures blood vessels in several major organs including the eyes, lungs, liver and brain, which results in internal bleeding, and often death. “Radhika is a talented researcher who has a promising future career in STEM,” said Veronica Ade, the district’s research facilitator. “She demonstrates the characteristics of an excellent researcher; she is

determined, passionate and curious. The Bethpage School District congratulates the Bethpage High School Golden Eagles varsity ice hockey team on an outstanding season. The Golden Eagles, under the guidance of coaches Jeff Schmier and Rich Dzurus earned first place in the Nassau County High School Hockey League Michelino East Conference, earning a bid to compete in the New York State Ice Hockey Tournament, to be held in

Jamestown. The last time the team earned a firstplace county win was in 2004. In the county championship, the Golden Eagles evened the best-ofthree county finals against the Long Beach High School Marines, causing the game to go into a decisive 10-minute minigame that ended in a 2-0 defeat for Bethpage. “This is the most amazing team I’ve ever coached,” said Schmier.

“These players gave it their all, from the beginning of September to the end of March. They always persevered, put in hard work and competed together as a family.” Team captains Kevin Drucker, Gavin Hulser and Spyro Markoulis commended their teammates for their tenacious attitude, reiterating the team’s motto of “huge saves and big hits.”

Senior Citizen Luncheon The Hicksville community’s senior citizens were honored with an afternoon filled with performing and visual arts, food and fun on April 10th at the Hicksville Public School District’s 26th annual Spring Senior

Volunteer Mentor Program Nassau BOCES leadership continues to share what they learned during Hurricane Sandy in 2012. In March, Nassau BOCES Associate Superintendent for Administrative Services James Robinson joined school leaders from across the nation in Houston, Texas, to meet with educational leaders in the area whose districts were impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Mr. Robinson joined other volunteer mentors to share experiences and discuss important recovery related topics. Among issues discussed were current mental and behavioral health challenges; how school district leadership can best support educators and students through recovery; effective communication strategies during, and in the aftermath of, an emergency; and other

topics pertinent to school districts. Volunteer mentors worked with local school leaders to problem solve current and potential future challenges, and to develop action plans that will guide recovery efforts going forward. In addition to a number of collaborative activities, Mr. Robinson participated on an expert panel to share lessons learned from personal recovery experiences and provide valuable insight on issues Harvey-impacted leaders may encounter post disaster. During Hurricane Sandy, he served as Freeport UFSD’s Business Official and was part of the district’s emergency response team. Soon after, he joined East Rockaway UFSD as Association Superintendent for Finance and Operations, and helped that district return to fiscal health. He and a team also managed

the district’s relationship with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to maximize recovery claims. “It was an extraordinary experience to participate with so many superintendents from around the country gathering to share knowledge with those in need,” said Mr. Robinson. “One of the key takeaways was to make sure that your district is reporting its own story. If you don’t, inaccurate information will spread.” The seminar was part of an ongoing effort to strengthen local resiliency and build system-wide capacity in areas across the Hurricane Harveyimpacted region.

Preparedness Training School leaders from throughout Nassau County are getting a lesson in safety and security preparedness thanks to a partnership between Nassau BOCES and the Nassau County Police Department (NCPD). The two organizations joined together to create a half-day training in how to prepare for and respond during an emergency situation. The training is being offered on several dates this spring at the Morrelly Homeland Security Center in Bethpage. The presentation focuses on making sure each district not only has policies and procedures in place, but emphasizes the need to conduct drills so that everyone knows how to respond during an actual emergency. “We really have to work to break the code of silence,”

said Peter LaDuca, Nassau BOCES Executive Manager for Health and Safety Training and Information Services. “What we see very often is that someone knew in advance but didn’t say anything. We have to reinforce the idea of speaking up if you see something. This should be a major focus of your plans.” Sergeant Robert Connolly, head of NCPD Homeland Security, echoed this call to action. “We need to know. We need you to report when you think something is wrong.” Sometimes people do not want to call 911 when they’ve overheard something or seen something that did not seem right, he said. To combat that, the police department has developed several ways for people to

report this information without calling 911, including an App called See Send, an anonymous tip line 1.800.244.TIPS (8477) and social media. Throughout his tenure, Mr. LaDuca has worked with every school district in the county. During his presentation, he pointed out some of the key areas in which school districts could improve their preparedness, such as: · Ensuring that other school building personnel, in addition to principals and assistant principals, have been given the training they need to manage an emergency situation, should it fall to them as part of the chain of command; · Requiring school personnel to take a radio with them every time they take students outside the building, even for recess;

and · Having social and emotional skills as a strong component of the school curriculum and culture. Many school districts are turning to technology to play a significant role in their safety and security plans. Mr. LaDuca, however, urged school leaders to be cautious about this. He pointed out the many issues he has seen districts encounter after investing in security technology, including failing to train staff or to continue training new staff, and not keeping up with the required longterm maintenance of these devices. “If it was me, my dollars would be invested in locks on classroom doors,” he said. Mr. LaDuca also urged every school administrator to take the free online school emergency

planning courses offered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Links to these and other training resources can be found on the Nassau Schools Emergency Planning Consortium website, www. nassauschoolemergency. org. Active shooter situations are usually very short – 75% take less than five minutes and 52% are over in less than two minutes. But it takes much longer to ensure that the perpetrator has been stopped. During that time, emergency personnel are often not able to treat the injured. That role often falls to those around them – in school shootings, this is teachers and other school personnel. “A lot of injuries can be controlled with very little training,” said Sergeant Connolly.

He urged the attendees to participate in Stop the Bleed training, a national program that focuses on teaching life-saving interventions such as how to tie a tourniquet. Locally, NYU Winthrop Hospital in Mineola offers the course “Bleeding Control Basic.” Sergeant Connolly also urged school leaders to make sure that students know that making terroristic threats, including that they are going to shoot someone on social media, is a Class D felony that would follow them for the rest of their lives. NCPD Homeland Security will conduct follow-up the trainings by meeting with individual school districts to continue the conversation.
