he Syosset School District recently held its annual Jazz Festival at Syosset High School. The informal evening was a showcase that drove home the progression in music education from elementary to middle school to high school. Students from jazz ensembles at Robbins Lane and Berry Hill performed, along with jazz chorus numbers from both H.B. Thompson and South Woods middle schools. The evening ended with the high school jazz band.

Heroes Of The Night County Executive Steve Bellone, Legislator Steve Stern and the Long Island Ducks announced a new partnership between Suffolk County and the Long Island Ducks to publicly recognize our local veterans and active duty service men and women at every home game during the 2015 season. “Suffolk County boasts the largest veteran population in all of New York State, with nearly 100,000 United States veterans calling Suffolk County their home, said County Executive Steve Bellone. “Expanding and enhancing services for our veteran population has always been a priority of ours, but there is always more we can do.” “So today, I along with Legislator Stern and the executive staff of the Long Island Ducks announce a new partnership between Suffolk County and the Long Island Ducks to honor our local veterans and active duty service men and women at every

home game of the Long Island Ducks.” “The partnership between Suffolk County and the Long Island Ducks to honor our veterans is a home run,” Legislator Steve Stern said. “Our veterans are not only the Heroes of the Night, they are our heroes every day and it is an honor for all of us to say thank you in such a meaningful way.” The Long Island Ducks, through the support of New York Community Bank and the QuackerJack Foundation, will honor two “Heroes of the Night” at every home game for their selfless and courageous service to our country. Each Hero of the Night will receive ten complimentary tickets to the game at which they will be honored, so that they may bring their family and friends along with them. All “Heroes of the Night” ticket holders will also receive access to the Duck Club, the Long Island Duck’s elite restaurant and bar, reserved for season ticket and luxury suite

In The Mood By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As a former student of psychology, I am continuously fascinated by those factors which cause a person’s mood to drastically change from one moment to the next, often with no discernable explanation. One minute, happy, positive energy; the next, sullen, negative bitterness. It’s enough to make your head spin. Of course, there are a million factors that could possibly contribute to such sudden alterations in behavior; but, if you’re like me, you immediately look for the root of the problem. Is it my fault? Did I do something, say something, unknowingly

cause some perceived slight…what? Chances are, it’s something else entirely. (Read: Everything is not always about you!) The thing is, when you’re in a foul frame of mind, it’s difficult to see beyond the black cloud. Best everyone stay out of your way until the storm has passed, as you can’t be held accountable for your tone, whether impatient, annoyed, indifferent… in short, anything but friendly. Negativity breeds more negativity, and those who dare to cross paths with those in such a state are just asking for trouble. And so the cycle continues. Day after day of trying to dodge the slings and arrows of those who

would bring you down to their level, if you let them. It’s an effort, to be sure, to block out and continue on your merry way. But what other choice do we have? There comes a point when you need to avoid being sucked into the cycle. I often envy those who seem to exude nothing but positive vibes, who appear to be in a constant state of contentment. Is it genuine? How do they achieve such a mentality and, better yet, maintain it continuously? I suppose, even if it is merely a means of keeping up appearances, such a skill should be applauded. Fake it ‘til you make it, as they say. Perhaps they should hold a class on that.

Roller Derby’s first World Cup was held in Toronto in December 2011 and the Fédéracion Internacional de Roller Sports (FIRS), recognized by the International Olympic Committee as governing body of roller sports, has added roller derby to its list of disciplines and the sport will be featured in the first World Roller Games to take place in Barcelona in 2017. On Saturday April 25th the women of the Strong Island Derby Revolution (SIDR) hit the track in their second home game of this season as they take on the Jerzey Derby Brigade (JDB) from Morristown, NJ. Last season, these two teams battled it out with SIDR taking the win both home and away. “This is by far one of the most physical teams we’ve played to date so it’s always an exciting time for fans,” said Doc Block, coach of the Strong Island Revolution. Summer Recreation This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Town’s poplar Summer Recreation Program. The Town’s Summer Recreation Program offers children between the ages of four and twelve an exciting, age-grouped summer experience. New Start Times Announced

The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District announced new start times beginning in September 2015 to address equity of opportunities between the two middle schools. To accomplish the new middle school schedule the district has made adjustments to the start and end times for the Kindergarten Center and all four elementary schools. The new start times came from a recommendation of committee charged by the Board of Education to research how the two middle schools can be more aligned in scheduling and programming. This year a change was made to the H.B. Mattlin Middle School (MMS) schedule by adding a tenth period to reduce co-curricular conflicts. The period ten schedule was added to mirror that

A New Tactic In The War Against Cholesterol There’s good news for those concerned about cholesterol and their health. They may have a new way to regulate their cholesterol level that doesn’t involve prescription drugs. Cholesterol is a naturally occurring substance in the human body. It is used to make many of our hormones, vitamin D and bile acids, which aid fat digestion and keep cell membranes intact. How much you have is based on a combination of genetics and lifestyle. However, too much LDL cholesterol—often referred to as “bad cholesterol”—can slowly build and contribute to heart disease and clogged arteries. Some will try to manage their cholesterol with diet and exercise while others will turn to

prescription medications. A New Approach One of the latest approaches to managing cholesterol involves taking a nutritional supplement. One such supplement, called Sytrinol, is described as a safe, effective cholesteroland triglyceride-lowering nutrient that is designed to begin working in 30 days. The supplement is made up of a blend of powerful antioxidants including polymethoxylated flavones (PMFs) and a range of palm (alpha, delta and gamma) tocotrienols. According to a published clinical study, Sytrinol was able to significantly lower total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides. The formula is also said to increase HDL levels. This is often referred to as the “good

cholesterol” because of the way it transports LDL cholesterol away from the heart and back into the bloodstream. Heart-Healthy Ingredients One of the main active ingredients in Sytrinol is a group of compounds derived from the peels of citrus fruits. The two most common are tangeretin and nobiletin, which are described as extremely potent bioflavonoids. Another ingredient is a group of palm tocotrienols, which are members of the vitamin E family and are extracted from the fruit of the palm tree. Like vitamin E, palm tocotrienols control antiinflammatory responses and degrade a key enzyme used by the liver to produce cholesterol.

Caring For Granite Countertops During their “Writing Like A Scientist” unit, second-graders at J. Irving Baylis Elementary School engineered blades for wind turbines with an eye for efficiency in design. They began by learning about renewable and nonrenewable energy sources from a multimedia presentation given by Enrichment Specialist Dr. Kat Kelly in the library. They learned

about the limitations of nonrenewable resources such as gas, oil and coal. They also learned about the flexibility and availability of renewable resources such as wind, water and sun. The second-graders then used a STEM portfolio to guide their work in groups as they designed blades for a wind turbine. They followed the STEM path of ask, imagine, plan, create and improve.

Groups worked collaboratively to design a new type of blade to test on a model wind turbine. In the end, they learned that surface area, shape, weight and strength of the material were all important factors in designing successful blades. Photo courtesy of: Syosset School District

Olympiad Western Long Island Regionals held at Wisdom Lane Middle School in Levittown. Team 1 from South Woods came in second place out of 42 teams, earning them a spot in the state competition at Minoa High School in East

out of 42. Members of Team 1 include Maanuv Allu, Eugene Aspiras, Syndey Chen, Rebecca Geiger, Ben Huang, Jason Lan, Cole Menchel, Alina Pratkin, Merin Thomas, Katrina Tun, Vanessa Vija,

and took home 22 medals. The other two teams scooped up 12 medals in the contest. The Science Olympiads competed under the direction of teacher Linda Stollow.
