Festival Disney Competition
T
he 19 members of Holy Trinity High School’s Select Choir experienced the magic in Orlando, FL at the Festival Disney music competition when it was announced they won first place among specialty choirs. Holy Trinity’s Select Choir is a small ensemble that holds evening rehearsals once a week for three hours. They compete at Festival Disney every other year and have previously won second place. Congratulations to the group!

Oyster Bay Town residents are reminded that the Second Half of the 2015-2016 School Tax Levy is due on April 1st, but can be paid without penalty through May 10th. Please be certain to sign your check, payable to James J. Stefanich, Receiver of Taxes. Indicate your property’s S.D. Code, Section, Block, Lot and Phone number on the check. “By law, a taxpayer

Eerie - the only word to describe that morning. The morning sun was slowly inching toward the gray sky, revealing a light fog. The mist seemed to grow thicker as the sun crept through its tendrils. Glancing up and down the block, I crossed the street to wait for my bus to come and whisk me off to the hellhole known as high school. The screen of my phone illuminated the vapor that twirled around me, coiling itself around me like a snake squashing its prey. A twig snapped on the lawn behind me, causing me to spin around, getting whipped by my own cherry hair. Squinting my eyes, I scanned the dying lawn, but saw nothing. Unable to shake the thought of someone standing in the darkness, watching me, I stepped further into the protection of the towering street lamp. The dusty yellow glow swallowed me willingly as I wrapped my arms protectively around myself. Antsy, I leaned forward, allowing myself to see past all the parked cars to see the yellow lights of the bus working its way toward me. A sense of relief flooded me. Dropping my guard, a loud banging noise sounded behind me, causing me
to jump, stirring up the fog around my sneakers. Glancing over my shoulder, I noticed a white gate swinging in the wind, crashing into its post. The squeaking of tires drew my attention back to the street. In front of me stood the school bus with its doors wide open, welcoming me with a blast of heat. I slid into the seat high above the back wheel, before glancing once more at the lawn to see if anyone was there. A dark figure moved closer to the sidewalk. The eyelids of the being opened, revealing glowing yellow eyes that latched onto mine the second they were scanning the world around them. A faint memory of piercing gold eyes studying me ran through my head at the speed of light so I could not even visualize what the owner of the one-of-a-kind orbs was. The bus began to roll away, but my eyes were glued to the golden ones hidden in the fog. When we rounded the corner, my contact was broken without my consent. The memory began to play again as I leaned back into my seat. A square jaw. Smooth almond skin. Sun-kissed hair. I knew those eyes. It was –

I was summoned to compose this week’s column, something about “deadlines” and this thing called “Seasons™ Magazine,” whatever that is. Word is, my Human was especially overwhelmed and couldn’t think of anything creative to write. So here I am, yet again, to save the day… From my understanding, there’s a section called “Snippets” in the middle of each edition of the newspaper this week, highlighting aforementioned magazine and its latest spring content. My Human rarely moves my new home anymore, so my biggest adventure is pretty much watching her occasionally cook. Speaking of, there are also several tasty recipes to be found in the pages of Seasons™, for those culinary sorts. Who doesn’t love a good meal, right? I know I do. Several per day, in fact. Heck, I’d eat once an hour if she served me. But I digress. Back to the magazine. There are features on Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Memorial Day, tips on eating healthy and
getting in shape for bathing suit season and… well, you’ll have to read it yourself – I only made it past the Table of Contents. Tiny brain = short attention span. All I know is dinner has been exceptionally late these last several weeks as my Human worked tirelessly to finish putting together the editorial content. It had better be good! And so, once again, I swim in to save the day. Buddy to the rescue! Because, really, who wouldn’t love an endorsement from everyone’s favorite Betta? The 19 members of Holy Trinity High School’s Select Choir experienced the magic in Orlando, FL at the Festival Disney music competition when it was announced they won first place among specialty choirs. Holy Trinity’s Select Choir is a small ensemble that holds evening rehearsals once a week for three hours. They compete at Festival Disney every other year and have previously won 2nd place. Ann-Marie Hoher, was very proud of these students. “Receiving the golden Mickey was the students’ goal and they worked very hard towards that goal, including asking for extra rehearsal time. I was so happy for them and for all the parents that made the trip with us. It was great that they were able to experience this truly magical moment!” Festival Disney is an all-Disney-produced competitive music festival for vocal and instrumental ensembles in middle and high school. Adjudicators are distinguished collegiate music educators.

Plainview-Old Bethpage School District’s H.B. Mattlin Middle School students recently received Google Chrome Books as part of the school’s science, technology, engineering, arts and math initiative (STEAM). Students had the
opportunity to personalize their desktops, begin research for non-fiction books they will be writing and participate in a math workshop on these new Chrome Books. The STEAM initiative was adapted by the school to foster greater understanding

By: Shirley Koval Lieberman Spring has sprung, so why haven’t I? The earth is revitalized. Everywhere I look, there are buds bursting to show off their finery. Where is my photosynthesis? If I get too much sun, I get more wrinkles, burnt skin, cancer. No raking or thatching will help me...oh no! The gardeners come and look about. Oh yes my dear, you need some chemicals to kill the weeds, and seeds to fill in the bald spots of grass. Great idea, here comes the retin A, the alphahydroxyl and this and that. The wrinkles keep coming. The hair gets thinner and grows in all the wrong places. And the garden looks great! The trees grow tall and need a trimming. I grow short, I’m never winning. The colors are glorious, the reds, the purples, the whites and yellows. My colors all come out of a jar, a brush, a pencil. IT JUST ISN’T FAIR!

Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District’s John F. Kennedy High School (JFKHS) students Dara Gleeson and Jordyn Schor will represent their school at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Phoenix, Arizona in May 2016. Both students qualified based on their participation in local science fairs. They will now bring their award-winning projects to the world’s largest international pre-college science competition to showcase their findings against 1,700 high school students from 75 countries, regions and territories for approximately $4 million in prizes. “We could not be more proud of Dara and Jordyn as they go on to represent our school district in this international science competition,” said Superintendent Dr. Lorna Lewis. “These students have devoted time outside the classroom to research their projects and we applaud their diligence and dedication to academic excellence and wish them the best of luck this May. They should be very proud of their achievements.” Dara conducted her research at Hofstra University in the microbiology lab of Dr. Javier Izquierdo and was awarded first place at the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair. She chose to study the microbes found along the commonly-cultivated grapevine, Vitis vinifera,

Dara set out to determine what these microbes are, which parts of the vine they are located and if they could influence the flavor and development of a specific wine. “Dara is a special young woman; diligent, hardworking and kind,” said JFKHS Research Coordinator Mary Lou
JFKHS’s Advanced Placement (AP) Psychology/Social Science Research program. She aimed to determine if using Golden Ratio Typography could improve reading comprehension abilities in nystagmus patients. Nystagmus is an ocular disorder characterized by uncontrollable eye movements, reduced visual acuity and decreased reading comprehension abilities and affects over 1.5 million people nationwide. “Overall, this study has tremendous implications for the nystagmus community, in which Jordyn is a part of,” said Social Science Research teacher Ray Tesar. “Her project was birthed from necessity. Instead of accepting that nothing more could be done to aid her reading comprehension abilities, along with the abilities of other Nystagmus patients, she sought to find an unconventional method which could solve these issues. That is the essence of a great scientist.” The Intel ISEF, a program of Society for Science and the Public (SSP), unites top scientific minds, showcasing their O’Donnell. “She is amenable to suggestions, steadfast talents on an international stage where doctoral level and determined and a pleasure to work with.” scientists review and judge their work. Family Residences and Essential Enterprises (FREE) held their 2nd Annual “Blue Jeans for Brain Injury” Day on March 28th. “Blue Jeans for Brain Injury” is a public awareness and fundraising campaign held by the Brain Injury Association of New
York during the month of March, which known as Brain Injury Awareness Month. The Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Services team at FREE hosted their 2nd annual event, at which Bill Busch, one of their TBI Waiver participants and a professional artist,
displayed and sold his artwork during the event. Donations were collected and will be sent to the Brain Injury Association of New York State in memory of John Kametler, one of their former participants who passed away from cancer last year.

Val & Sal Named Syosset High School is proud to announce that Benjamin Senzer is the Class of 2016 Valedictorian and Michael Collet is the Salutatorian. “Benjamin Senzer and Michael Collet are two examples of students that inspire while immersing themselves in everything Syosset,” said Principal Dr. Giovanni Durante. “I am very proud of their accomplishments both inside and outside of the classroom and wish them continued success in their futures.” Benjamin is a wellrounded student with a strong interest in science and math, having scored an 800 on both the chemistry and math SAT II. He is an AP Scholar of Distinction with A+ grades in 14 different AP courses covering math, science,
social studies, English, French and music, as well as Advanced Research courses. Benjamin is also a heralded bassist with the orchestra, achieving with All-State and AllCounty honors. He also serves as Editor-in-Chief of the school newspaper, and volunteers his time as a pit bassist for theater productions as well as teaching Hebrew at the Woodbury Jewish Center. A National Merit and Presidential Scholar finalist this year, Benjamin has been accepted to Princeton University and plans to study bioengineering, an area of study for which he completed a pre-college program through Brown University. Michael is an entrepreneurial-minded student who has excelled in several marketing
and business related courses and competitions. This includes holding membership in the Business Honor Society, as well as the National Honor and National Spanish Honor societies. He currently serves as vice president of the Investment Club, is a member of the school’s chapter of the DECA for which he has won numerous awards and serves as vice president for fundraising for the school’s Model Congress club. Additionally, he volunteers at the Variety Child Learning Center and the Cold Spring Hills Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation. A past AP Scholar of Distinction, Michael is a National Merit finalist this year and plans to study applied economics and management at Cornell University.
DUNE STABILIZATION - The Town of Oyster Bay’s Dune Stabilization Day was recently held at Tobay Beach. Since 1989, the Dune Stabilization Project has been an initiative to protect and enhance TOBAY Beach’s environment. It has been an immensely popular volunteer activity for residents of all ages. The dunes in Tobay Beach continue to require ongoing support as environmentally damaging storms, particularly Hurricane Sandy, have had a significant impact upon the dunes.
