Second Half Taxes Due

Oyster Bay Town residents are reminded that the Second Half of the 2016-2017 School Tax Levy is due on April 1st, but can be paid without penalty through May 10th. Please be certain to sign your check, payable to James J. Stefanich, Receiver of Taxes. Indicate your property’s S.D. Code, Section, Block, Lot and telephone number on the check. “By law, a taxpayer has a 40-day penalty free period from the date the tax is due during which payment may be made without penalty,” Mr. Stefanich explained. “After the 40 days, a one percent penalty is added for each month the tax remains unpaid, retroactive to April 1st.” Residents can pay in person, by either cash or check, at the Tax Office, Oyster Bay Town Hall

Councilwoman Johnson added that in order to qualify as a blood donor, a person must between the ages of 17 and 75 years old…16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note…weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within

the last 56 days. Anyone who has received a tattoo within the past twelve months is ineligible to apply. It is recommended that volunteers eat well (low fat) and drink ﬂuids in the days before the Blood Drive. The Councilwoman noted that all blood types are needed, especially O positive and O negative. Refreshments will be provided for all who donate. In addition, each time someone makes a donation, they earn advantage points redeemable for a wide variety of gifts, gift cards,

or other merchandise. Also, McDonalds will be offering a coupon to all donor registrants offering a free large sandwich or salad when you make any type of purchase at McDonalds. The Town of Oyster Bay will be holding its Blood Drive on Thursday, April 13th, to help hospitals meet the ongoing need for blood donations. “Long Island Blood Services cannot meet its vital, life-saving mission without the efforts of the Town’s Blood Drive and its volunteers,” said Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson. “We strongly encourage all those eligible to participate. Kramer Lane Elementary School in the Bethpage School District hosted a demonstration by members of the FIRST Lego League for its thirdthrough fifth-grade students. The demo was done by Vinaya Raghavan and Sridev Raghavan whose son, Ankur Raghavan, is part of an out-of-district FIRST Lego

team, Robo Eagles, with fellow fifth-graders from both Kramer Lane and Central Boulevard schools. The team took their peers through this year’s challenge mat, titled Animal Allies, and showed them how the robot is built and works. Although it is only the team’s first year, they were one of 40 that qualified for the

Students Rahul and Sahil Chaudry captured first place in the biochemistry and translational medicine category, Dahyun “Elle” Park and Jordan Sanford took first place on the energy category, Rushabh Meta took first in physics and astronomy, and Mohamed El-Abtah won first place in the biomedical and health sciences grouping. These projects are four of only 20 from the LISEF competition that earned this distinction.

Run for Tomorrow’s Hope Over 800 runners participated in the Run for Tomorrow’s Hope, a 5K charity race/fun run hosted by St. Joseph School in Garden City. The event, now in its second year, drew runners from as far east as Greenport, and as far west as Brooklyn. This year’s 812 participants, along with sponsoring businesses and families raised over $18,000 for the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation, the Long Island based charity that supports Catholic

elementary students and schools. In addition to a 7:30 a.m. Mass prior to the event, Bishop John Barres was on hand to meet and greet the organizations and individuals supporting the event. Bishop Barres offered a blessing to both the fun run participants and to the race participants prior to the two starts. Race Director Dr. Michael Spinelli said, “We are very pleased with the support this race has gained within the community, and grateful for the support of the

businesses, families and participants that make this possible,” said Dr. Spinelli. “The Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation is an outstanding local charity and the St. Joseph’s School parent and business community comes together in a powerful way to support the children and families of Long Island’s Catholic Elementary Schools,” said Spinelli. Track Club from Floral Park sending a large, and fast, group of runners. As a USATAF Certified/ Sanctioned 5K Course, all participants in the race were chipped for exact timing, and the course for precise distance. There were gold, silver and bronze medals awarded in a variety of age brackets as well as a few categories that were purely fun. Some of the noteworthy performances included a second win in a row for women’s overall winner Lauryn Heskin. Lauryn, representing the TSC Track Club set a record with her 2016 run, and was the first women’s finisher again in 2017 with a time of 18:30.7. Lauryn was slightly off her 2016 pace because Lauryn, an eighth grader, had a busier than normal personal schedule with preparation for the Catholic High School entrance exam and more pressing scholastic responsibilities this year. TSC Track Club members Sophia Muccini and Siena Muccini were second and third respectively for a 1,

2, 3 sweep of the podium positions. The three of them are 13, 14 and 12 years-old. The overall winner, and first in the men’s group, was Francis O’Brien with a time of 16:47.9. He was followed closely by Patrick Conklin at 16:51.6 and Christopher Strzelinski with a time of 16:57.7. The event was covered by Telecare TV, the National Catholic television network that operates from here on Long Island and covered by Telecare’s own host Karen Smith. In addition to covering the event for Telecare, Smith competed in the event and won first place as the fastest women’s Catholic educator with a time of 27:27.3. While the podium was dominated by young runners the event drew runners from every age group and acknowledged their accomplishments. Even former St. Joseph’s Principal Eileen Kilbriide came out and ran in the event, winning in her age group. Said Kilbride, “This is a wonderful cause and they deserve our support.”
