Donning “Thoughtful Thursday” T-shirts, the Bethpage School District students colored and decorated bookmarks to be displayed and distributed for use in the school library and Bethpage Public

Library. In addition, some of the bookmarks were donated to Book Fairies, a nonprofit organization that collects reading materials for people in need throughout metropolitan New York.

In honor of American Heart Month, students of Central Boulevard and Charles Campagne elementary schools in the Bethpage Union Free School District participated in the American Heart Association’s annual Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser. According to the AHA’s website, Jump Rope for

Heart assists in the battle against heart disease and stroke by promoting physical activity, heart healthy living and community service. Divided into groups during their gym classes, students exercised their heart muscles by jumping rope to popular pop music. They also hula-

hooped, played basketball and learned about the importance of living a healthy lifestyle, all while raising money for the community. Collectively, the two schools raised more than $7,000 to assist in heart disease research.

Author Visits career as a children’s book illustrator, collaborating with his editor to figure out what he would draw for the cover of the stories and refining his work through the editing process. He shared some of the techniques and tools he used to add color to his drawings, which were often modeled after

his children and friends. He also showed students samples of his artwork and read his famous book, “Dinosaur Train,” that was inspired by his son. At the conclusion of the visit, all students received autographed copies of Gurney’s books, courtesy of the PTA.

Since your heating and cooling system is the lungs of your home, you want to keep it clear.

Let’s use the example of chatting with another using your smart phone. The Receiver - The receiver is the person you are talking with. At this point, he/she has started to decipher your message and, based on that comprehension, is ready to reply. Now, the receiver is replying to you and, in effect, giving you feedback. You are now in a position to interpret the response and reply accordingly. The following are several guidelines to observe during this process: The Downward Effect of Noise - Noise can be present anywhere in the communication loop. It can take the form of any type of disturbance which disrupts the transmission and reduces the quality of the communication. Use of Jargon - Always keep your words as simple as possible. A particular type of statement might be fine for a business situation, but not useful in other conversations. Body Language - A point to

The Art of Effective Communication To start, let’s begin by defining communication. Simply put, it is the transfer and understanding of meaning to another person. However, not communicating effectively can lead to misunderstandings, confusion and a host of other problems. For example, have you ever completed a conversation only to have the other person state that he/she is not sure what you said? How about a cell phone chat where the other person’s voice fades in and out and you just assume you heard everything said? What if you are talking to a person with a heavy accent and are hesitant to ask them to clarify? Chances are, you have probably interpreted a few things incorrectly. Try to envision effective communication as a closed loop. For example, in an electrical circuit, all components must be completely integrated. If not, there will be a short circuit, and the circuit will fail. So it is with the communication loop. Allow us to delve further into the subject. Let’s begin by exploring each component: The Message - The process begins with the sender of the message. This can be in the form of a face-to-face conversation (the most effective

remember is that only 20% of what the other person says is surfacing. The other 80% is expressed through their body language, including facial expressions, body movements and a change in the way they are expressing themselves. Following are a few tips to overcome the obstacles to effective listening: Be Aware of Your Emotions - When upset about something, you may not always speak, or write, in a rational manner. It might be best to postpone a conversation until you are calmer. Stop Interrupting - Some people have a habit of not listening effectively and continue to interrupt the other person with their own thoughts. We need to listen 80% of the time, and only speak 20% of the time. Make Sure You are Interpreting the Feedback Correctly - If you are not correctly understanding all of the feedback being given, your own feedback might faulty as well. Clearly, the subject of communication is a complex one. By following the above notes, you will be on your way to become a better communicator.

The Hicksville Public School District Board of Education honored exceptional members of its middle and high schools’ communities in a special Secondary Student and Staff Recognition Ceremony held at Hicksville High School. The program began with a slate of monologues performed by high school theatre students Katherine Jergensen, Viren Fernandes and Barbara Watterson. Assistant Superintendent for Personnel Rosemarie Coletti then presented certificates to staff members for five, 10, 15, 20 and 30 years of distinguished service to the district. The staff recognition was followed by a certificate presentation to students by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carl Bonuso, alternating members of the board of education, building principals, teachers and department supervisors.

Thomas Bachmeier, a senior at Bethpage High School, has been named a 2017 National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar. Established in 1983 through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, the NHRP honors about 5,000, or 2.5 percent, of the highest-scoring students from more than 250,000 Hispanic/Latino juniors who take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Qualifications for

recognition are based on critical reading, mathematics and writing scores on the PSAT/ NMSQT and a minimum GPA of 3.5. Although there is no financial reward, scholars receive a certificate and the NHRP sends a list of all recognized students to subscribing colleges and universities. Thomas excels academically and athletically and gives back to his community. In school, he is a member

of the National Honor Society, sits on the honor roll and is enrolled in numerous college-level and Advanced Placement courses. On the field, is a multisport athlete, competing on the varsity football, wrestling and winter track teams. He also volunteers at his local fire department. The district congratulates Thomas on this exceptional award and wishes him a successful senior year.

Friends of Karen

Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families. This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost. To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. Saturday will be a 5K and Sunday will be a 10K. They are looking for people to join their Friends of Karen team and to

cross the finish line knowing they’re making a difference in the lives of many. If you are interested in participating in either or both of these races with colleagues, as a family or individually, you can sign up today! Additionally, if you are interested in volunteering your time preparing for the event - handing out t-shirts, making sure every participant has what he or she needs, etc.; or at the event - taking photos for promotional purposes, you can do so. Harbor & Beach Cleanup S u p e r v i s o r Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson invite residents to participate in the annual Oyster Bay Harbor & Beach Cleanup, scheduled for Saturday, April 21st. The event is co-sponsored by the joined forces of the Town of Oyster Bay, the North Oyster Bay Baymen’s Association (NOBBA) and Friends of the Bay. This environmental event is scheduled to kick-off at 8 a.m. “This great event features Town employees and volunteers rolling up their sleeves and working side by side to clean-up the beaches and shoreline areas along Oyster Bay Harbor,” Supervisor Saladino said.

“With ‘Earth Day’ right around the corner, this important environmental initiative is the perfect way to pitch in and help make a difference!” Volunteers are invited to participate in the cleanup, which will run from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. The central meeting place will be Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park launching ramps and waterfront gazebo off of Larrabee Avenue, Oyster Bay. Additional locations for the clean-up include Theodore Roosevelt Beach in Oyster Bay, Stehli Beach in Bayville and Centre Island Beach in Bayville. Typically, in year’s past, harbor and beach cleanup events have resulted

in about forty thousand pounds of debris collected by volunteers. Councilwoman Johnson stated, “Each year, countless amounts of paper, food, plastics and other trash are discarded on beaches or dumped overboard from recreational and commercial vessels. Hicksville Public School District Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Marianne Litzman has been selected as a recipient of the Nassau BOCES 2018 Education Partner Award for her outstanding contributions to public education in Nassau County. Eight of Wantagh’s top artists were selected to participate in the Heckscher Museum of Art’s Long Island’s Best Exhibition from March 17th-April 15th, an annual arts education initiative and only juried exhibition on Long Island that offers students the opportunity to exhibit in a museum

setting. Wantagh High School juniors Sarah Cashton, Katrynna Jackowicz and Lindsey Moore and seniors Felisa Bronzino, Sarah Corry, Erin Hogarty, Allie Schadoff and Kerriann Steingruebner were selected to display their artwork. Of the district’s eight exhibitors, Allie

Schadoff received an honorable mention. During the Long Island’s Best Exhibition, students in grades 9-12 are invited to create a work of art based on artwork shown at the museum. Eighty pieces are selected each year for hundreds of entries from Nassau and Suffolk counties.

The Long Island alternative transportation advocacy organization, Car-less Long Island, is holding its second annual Long Island “Bike-to-Work Parade” on Saturday, April 28th. Gathering for the parade begins as 9 a.m. at Hofstra University’s North campus. The parade will follow a 6.5-mile loop beginning and ending at Hofstra University. There will be a route for pedestrians, disabled participants, cyclists with younger children and cyclists who simply would prefer a shorter ride. Participants are encouraged to dress up and adorn their bicycles. There will be a festival with prizes for the best costumes and bikes at the end of the parade. “There are many reasons why Long Islanders should support alternative forms of transportation, such as biking,” says

Car-less Long Island founder and chair Sylvia Silberger of Hempstead. “Clearly it is much more environmentally friendly and bicycle commuters are able to incorporate a healthier active life-style into their daily routine. But also, it reduces vehicular congestion, benefitting all motorists, and many studies have shown that walk- and bike-ability helps local businesses thrive.” Silberger says there are many Long Islanders who need alternative forms of transportation because do not drive or own their own cars. “We all benefit if everyone as access to the transportation necessary to survive in this world,” she added Car-less Long Island (CLLI) was founded in the summer of 2015 as a project of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island. “It seems I have often found myself in conversations

with other Long Islanders who would like to be able to get around without a car, but are frustrated by the danger and inconvenience inherent alternative modes of transportation,” says Silberger. She founded CLLI to counter the “nihilistic feeling that this is just how Long Island is – we are a car-culture and that will never change.” Silberger is optimistic that the Bike-to-Work Parade will allow Long Islanders who would like Long Island to be a more bikefriendly community realize that they are not alone. Participation in the parade is free, but participants are encouraged to register in advance at www.CarLessLI.org/parade2018. ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures

than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should

Sharing Success Stories Students in the upper elementary grades in the North Bellmore School District don’t have to look very far for positive role models. Throughout the year, their older peers from Wellington C. Mepham High School have been visiting classrooms through the Athletes Helping Athletes program. Mepham athletes

recently paid their third and final visit of the year to fifth-grade classes at Park Avenue Elementary School. The program cultivated positive connections and showed elementary school students how to be successful when they reach high school. Topics included good sportsmanship and making positive life choices.

The high school students presented the youngsters with various scenarios to determine the best way to react if they were faced with a challenging situation. The athletes talked about the good decisions they made so they could achieve success both on the field and in the classroom.

Lee Avenue Elementary School fourthgrade teacher Phillip Moshoyannis has been selected to participate in Teachers for Global

Classrooms, a branch of the federally funded Fulbright Program designed to provide yearlong training in international instruction.

As part of the program, he will spend three weeks in Peru observing classrooms and touring the country and its wide range of geographic features. Moshoyannis, who has taught at Lee Avenue for 23 years, is among 76 teachers selected nationwide from a pool of 477 candidates. City Strolls These words bring to mind many fond memories of days spent adventuring through Central Park and traversing the city streets from the upper west side all the way down to the Brooklyn Bridge and back again. It’s true what they say that you can literally spend an entire day in just a few square blocks and still not manage to see even a fraction of what that neighborhood has to offer. While I have resided within a mere hour’s drive of Manhattan for the entirety of my life, I am ashamed to say there are countless landmarks and tourist attractions I have yet to take the opportunity to appreciate. In recent years, I have traversed miles of city blocks on foot with one particularly adventurous friend for various shenanigans, some of which

columns - my futile attempt to cross as many of these “bucket list” items off of said list. From trying to time our return trip over the BK bridge to photograph sunset {while toting nearly an entire leftover pizza from Grimaldi’s} … to finding a “shortcut” through the Park that somehow managed to add about five miles to the journey … to winding up on the steps of Lincoln Center thoroughly out of breath, shoes in hand (documented in one of aforementioned past columns), just in the knick of time for the ballet … the stories are endless and, in retrospect, quite funny. And yet, there remain so many more nooks and crannies left to explore, museum exhibits to browse, restaurants to sample, culture to take in. Of course, there are

any season in New York; it’s just, the thought of exploring them seems particularly inviting in the spring. Perhaps this month, maybe next. Path to be determined. {And, inevitably, rerouted. Several times.} I have often thought how nice it would be to reside right there, at the center of it all. But, as with most things, it seems the daily routine is what ultimately wears on people and strips away the novelty of living in one of the greatest cities in the world. Visiting, however often - or seldom - it might be, keeps the perspective fresh and full of untapped adventure and excitement. So does randomly wandering the city streets with a good friend {and a spare pair of slippers} in tow. Happy trails!

Kindergarten students at Gardiners Avenue Elementary School in the Levittown Public Schools engaged in a sink versus float science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics experiment during their K-STEAM Club on March 28th. Facilitated by teacher Kristina Didyk, the morning club meets once a week to give students the opportunity to use their

imaginations and problem solve through different projects. Students gathered in the school’s art room where Didyk first discussed the directions of the experiment. Each student received a worksheet where they were required to draw a photo of the object that they were placing in water and color in their prediction of whether the object would float or sink.

Students were broken up into groups where they received a plastic container of water. Each group was supplied with materials such as a medal spoon, penny, plastic spoon, Q-tip and wooden stick, to experiment with and drop into the water. Before seeing if their predictions were correct, students discussed what they thought would happen and then took turns dropping the objects into the water. They then colored in their results on their worksheet. Toward the end of the meeting, the students got a head start on their next experiment. They were challenged to create a floating boat out of aluminum foil. Next time the group meets, the students will predict how many pennies the boat can hold before it sinks and record their results in their own personalized boat book. This exhibit showcases the exceptional sculpture, photography, computer graphics, drawing,

Granite countertops can really add spark to a kitchen or bathroom. Proper care will keep them looking beautiful.

Spreading B-Day Cheer First-graders at Park Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District are helping people’s birthday wishes come true. The children learned about the nonprofit organization, Birthday Wishes, which provides parties and gifts for children living in homeless shelters. Long Island Intake Coordinator Maureen Mantesta recently

spoke to Patricia Assande’s and Robin Obey’s firstgrade classes about the organization’s efforts. She explained that the goal is to provide each child with at least five new toys for his or her birthday. As part of the district’s commitment to community service, the first-graders used their class money to purchase items like stickers, bubbles, pencils and bounce balls,

which they assembled into gift bags for the children at the shelters. In lieu of a spring party, the students wanted to use their money to perform an act of kindness for others. “Some people are homeless and without our help they wouldn’t be able to have a fun time on their birthdays and have special treats,” said first-grader Zoey Stiegelbauer.
