In a Tizzy for Author Visit The three elementary schools in the Bethpage Union Free District were treated with a special visit from author Sarah Weeks from March 13-15. Ms. Weeks visited one school per day and spoke to students about the writing process, the fun of writing and her collection of B:9.75” books. She also previewed her upcoming book, “Lizzy T:9.75”

April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.
In honor of Earth Day, an annual event celebrated on April 22nd, which brings awareness about environmental conservation, I chose an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island.
Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors. Joanne and Al Grover started Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. in 1990. 2019 is their 29th year of cleaning up our bays, beaches and waterways. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. has grown from 1 person to several thousand concerned members in 7 chapters dotted all along Long Island’s South Shore.
This organization has 7 boats that go out in our waterways to patrol and pick-up trash and debris between March and November. All of the boats are operated by volunteer captains and crews that give their time to go out on clean-up trips. Clean-up trips usually last about 3 hours. After their boats are taken out of the water for the season, they bring them back to their Freeport headquarters and immediately start to work on them to get them ready for the next season. They have rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters in 28 years! The amazing impact that Long Island Waterways sees from the work of Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is something each of us should be thankful for! Signs Of Unsafe Driving In Older Adults
(NAPSI)—The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that there are more than 38 million drivers age 65 and older. Age is not the only factor that can impact driving abilities, but it is an important one. There is evidence that most people experience age-related declines in physical and mental abilities. These changes—which can affect everything from vision to how quickly you can make decisions—influence how well you can drive. They can also be difficult to address for yourself or with older people you know, since driving
often represents freedom, independence and control. But transitioning from driving doesn’t mean you have to lose these things. Your health care providers or Area Agency on Aging (www.eldercare.gov) can point you toward a range of transportation alternatives in the community. The first step toward finding those tools is recognizing when you might need them. Signs that an Older Adult’s Driving Skills Need Testing So how do you know whether you or an older adult you know is developing difficulties as a driver? These issues can be warning signs that suggest
that an older driver may need to be tested or evaluated: • Getting lost in familiar areas • Ignoring traffic signs and signals • Becoming easily agitated or angered • Falling asleep or being unable to concentrate when driving • Reacting too slowly to dangerous situations • Forgetting or ignoring driving basics (like yielding to the right of way) • Having trouble judging distances. Moving Forward Today’s column is all about change. When you think about it, you’ll realize that change is all around us. For example, look at the number of women that are now in the U.S. House of Representatives. Look at the way our government is now run. Look at the new air of mystery surrounding many of the documents released by our government. I take no sides on this; merely I want to present the facts as reported by the New York Times, The Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal. The other day I watched
a fascinating documentary about the effect of climate change around the world. It mentioned the melting of glaciers in Alaska and the heavy damage it is causing to both wildlife and commercial endeavors. Worse yet, the problem intensifies with each passing year and no one has the answer. There is a rumor that our government is even considering allowing new gas and oil exploration in many of these pristine areas with no regard for the damage it will do to wildlife and other vital areas of our environment.
Have you also noticed both the intensity and frequency of the storms we are experiencing along the entire United States? It is now common almost every day to see roads closed due to blizzard-like conditions, large cruise ships encountering unheard of severe weather patterns, threatening both the ship and the thousands of passengers aboard. Are you getting the message yet? The complexity of change itself…let’s approach the topic in a different way. One of my favorite entertainers is the
Cooking Up Pi The Bethpage Union Free School District celebrated Pi Day on March 14 with contests at Bethpage High School and John F. Kennedy Middle School. Students were tasked with reciting as many correct numbers in a row as possible in the numerical value of Pi. JFK sixth-grader Joey Bashker
earned top honors in the district for this year by naming 202 digits. Seventh-grader Arsh Singh finished in second place with 132 digits. Freshman Gulam Abbas was the individual winner at the high school with 130 digits in a row. In an additional contest, students embraced the
challenge of going around in a circle naming one digit at a time. Junior Geanna Koulouris was the final contestant standing to earn a T-shirt along with Gulam. The district congratulates all of the participating students for helping to celebrate Pi with this fun contest.

Stop the World, I Want to Get Off. iconic singer, Billy Joel. A few decades ago he both wrote and sang a song called We Didn’t Start The Fire. For those of you not familiar with it, it became one of the early top favorites at the time, and starts by naming at least fifteen trouble spots around the world and specifically pointing out that the “young people” of this world did not cause it. For, it was already there! Are you starting to see how difficult it really is to pinpoint the problems that change brings to all of us? We have now taken a
complete turn on how we all view change. For example, over the morning news I heard former Vice President, Joe Biden, carefully explain how he operates and the way he supports others. Plus more about the finger-pointing at Boeing, the psychological war between our President and the House of Representatives, the continuing fiasco surrounding building “The Wall” and the madness at our borders with Mexico, the increasing rate of rapes and murders throughout our country, problems in
Puerto Rico and many of our mid-east neighbors, plus the ever repeating problems surrounding Brexit. I have to ingest all of this news while having my breakfast? So here’s my secret for dealing with all of this madness…I relaxed over another cup of coffee and slowly started on how to organize my day. No Rush. Peace.

connects schools with local blood cancer patients in addition to providing tangible like skills to participants and allowing students to see the impact they’re making in the lives of others. Love? Love is the most cherished gift that life has to offer. It is also one of life’s greatest mysteries with myriad questions to ponder. Your heart starts to pound, your palms get sweaty, your mind drifts to that person day and night and you may be exhilarated and scared all at the same time. That is the beginning stage of romantic love. Five years later, and perhaps a marriage, children and a mortgage later, you’re no longer jittery around that person, you can definitely focus on your daily tasks, and in fact, you may not think about your significant other for hours at a time while at work. You may even hit a slump where you find yourself questioning, “Am I still in love?” The beginning stages of love are just that; the beginning stages. Love is not defined by a list of symptoms like the flu. It’s not a specific destination nor is it an elusive fairytale. The beauty of love is in the journey, and if we are lucky, that journey can last decades where love deepens and takes on many different forms. In fact, there are times where
we may not even like someone we love, but we would still run to their side or have their back at the drop of a hat (even if we have a scowl on our face while doing it). There are many forms of love. We love our parents, siblings, children, friends, animal companions and life partners. We can love looking at a rainbow or a sunset; and we may love God if that is how we choose to express our faith. Love is not to be judged, but experienced. The beauty of love is that it pulls us out of time and space, and brings us into the present moment. It also helps us in our growth and development as human beings. You cannot grow and expand without experiencing love in all its forms. Love can also be as simple as loving yourself, which is essential before you can love anything or anyone else. The old saying, “You cannot give away what you do not have,” has never been truer. No matter who you are, know that you are not deficient in love, because you are love. Our endless capacity for love is the greatest superpower we possess.
How we define it, measure it, express it, give it and receive it is instrumental in defining the parameters by which we live. We’ve all heard people say things like, “I want to be defined by this,” or “I don’t want to be defined by that.” You are not defined by past mistakes, nor are you defined by what you percieve as your greatest worldly achievements. We are all defined by our ability to give and receive love. You may at times question the love in your life, particularly as it pertains to romantic love. If you are in a new relationship that is still blossoming, enjoy the ride and know that in order for love to grow, it needs to mature into a deeper, more comfortable love. If you are in a longterm relationship or a marriage and you are longing for the days of new love, remind yourself that just as you would not regress to being a baby or a child again, your ripened and developed love could not and should not regress to that of brand new love. Enjoy the richness and depth of well worn love.

"My mom, Connie, would make this Artichoke Pie recipe as one of the many dishes at holiday gatherings in her home," says Deanna. "Mom passed away last year, just before Easter, at the age of 99. Her recipes will always be a part of our family celebrations as we honor her memory." What You Will Need 1 14oz can Artichoke hearts (packed in water) ½ lb. mozzarella cut into 1 inch chunks 2 eggs beaten ¼ tsp salt ¼ tsp pepper ¼ tsp garlic powder or 1 clove finely
chopped & sautéed in oil ¼ cup of Parmesan cheese 2 tbs. milk 2 homemade or frozen 9 inch pie crusts Preparation Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine diced artichoke hearts, mozzarella, eggs, salt, pepper, garlic parmesan cheese and milk into a large bowl. Mix well. Pour into bottom pie crust. Cover with top crust, pressing to seal the edges. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes (ovens and preference varies). Recipe makes 6-8 servings. Enjoy! our engagement, our outreach and continuing to build a Kehila Kedosha - a sacred community of Jews and of friends. Together we will create engaging programs for our children and explore meaningful Judaism for all of us,” states Rabbi Zeller. Rabbi Elizabeth Zeller, originally from West Lafayette, Indiana is a graduate of Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR) in Cincinnati where she was ordained in 2009. She also holds a Masters in Hebrew Letters from HUC and a B.A. in Jewish Studies and Political Science from Indiana University. Most recently, Rabbi Zeller has been the national Director of Learning and Innovation for NFTY, the Reform Youth Movement where she worked with
teens and staff from across the country to develop and implement programs to increase involvement by teens. Her prior congregational experience includes Temple Beth El (Tacoma, WA) and as the Associate Rabbi Educator at The Reform Temple of Forest Hills (Queens, NY) where she developed and expanded youth programs, young family engagement, and outreach. Rabbi Zeller is a product of the Reform youth movement, having spent over a decade at URJ Goldman Union Camp Institute (GUCI), as a camper and staff, and then serving as faculty at URJ Eisner and Crane Lake Camps. She is a past-president of the Women’s Rabbinic Network, serving all female Reform Rabbis
worldwide and the pastpresident of FAITH IN NEW YORK, an interfaith community organizing affiliate of PICO, serving the needs of the greater New York area through grassroots faith-based community organizing. She is currently in the inaugural cohort of the GenerationNow Fellowship, through the Jewish Education Project, which trains high-level teen leaders on how to successfully work to change the landscape of teen engagement. News 12 Scholar Athlete
Congratulations to Hicksville High School senior Kerrin Heuser who was recently named a News 12 Long Island Scholar Athlete. Kerrin was profiled by the network during the month of February. Kerrin is a successful three-sport athlete and high academic achiever who volunteers extensively to help others in and around the Hicksville community. She was named an Academic AllAmerican for lacrosse; she plays midfield for the varsity girls Comets and has achieved AllCounty status the last two seasons. Kerrin also runs
cross-country and winter track; she achieved AllConference status in crosscountry and is a three-time most valuable player for winter track, which she captained this season. Academically, Kerrin is a member of the National Honor Society and the Math Honor Society. She also gives back to others through Key Club and Natural Helpers, and this year organized a toy drive through the girls lacrosse team. She also volunteers her time away from school at ACDS, a Plainview-based organization that serves children and adults with Down syndrome, autism and other developmental disabilities. Additionally, Kerrin volunteers at Plainview Hospital in the assisted living wing and is an altar server at Our Lady of Mercy church in Hicksville. “We definitely have great programs here in Hicksville,” Kerrin said. “All of the coaches,
teachers and advisers have been great. I have had a wonderful time and look forward to finishing out another promising year on a positive note.” “Kerrin is the epitome of a well-rounded student,” Director of Physical Education, Health, Athletics, Driver Education and Recreation Matthew Calarco said. “She excels in her studies and extracurriculars – notably athletics – and possesses dedication and great character in everything she does.” For being named a News 12 Long Island Scholar Athlete, Kerrin will receive a $1,000 scholarship, sponsored by Bethpage Federal Credit Union and News 12. Mrs. Tierney’s students brought their recently created advertisements to Ms. Cataldi’s classroom to share with her students. The second-
graders presented their ideas, which included advertisements on popcorn chicken, nachos, soccer and others as part of their second unit on the writing process. Ms. Cataldi’s class also shared a recent writing assignment on the book “The Day the Crayons Quit” by Drew Daywalt. Students were tasked with paraphrasing an argument for a specific crayon color from the novel about how their color is the most used
and popular. The students walked around the classroom and shared their projects with their peers. Ms. Cataldi’s class created an “author’s chair” to help the secondgraders feel comfortable while presenting their projects. “Both classes worked very hard throughout the writing process and were very excited to share their assignments,” said Mrs. Tierney.
