It is unlikely anyone still has original carpeting from 35 years ago, and even if that is the case, the formaldehyde would have dissipated by now. • Myth: Carpeting is made from a host of chemical products. • Fact: Carpeting is made largely from nylon, wool, polypropylene and polyester. These are the same materials used in clothing, which spends hours resting up against the skin. Polypropylene is one of the safer plastics that does not contain BPA and is even used in some baby bottles. • Myth: Mold grows regularly on carpeting. • Fact: Unless you have a flood or a leak that is keeping carpeting saturated, mold will not grow during regular use. Both New York teams seem to have great potential for success this season, assuming everyone stays healthy and on the

roster for more than a month, of course. Being a lifelong Yankees fan, the biggest attraction is the thrill of witnessing Derek Jeter’s farewell season, a celebration of a true class act. Along with the start of spring sports comes the prospect of beach weather just beyond the horizon, outdoor concerts and long, lazy afternoons spent in the warmth of the sun. Well, in an ideal world, anyway. For those of us in the workforce, the weekends are the only time to truly capitalize – and doesn’t it

always seem like it rains on those days? Of course, there’s something to be said for tackling that “spring” cleaning we’ve been putting off for the last year or so. And that closet… I don’t know about you all, but the nicer weather motivates me to do some serious shopping – if only I had room to stuff one more hanger in between the massive wardrobe collection that has taken up permanent residence. If the paint bonds well to the plastic laminate, then you can go forward and buy enough paint to redo all of the cabinets. If the paint does not take, consult a professional to find a paint that’s likely to be a better fit. Expect this process to be one of trial and error. Plan for ornate cabinets to take a little longer. Painting projects will go faster when cabinets have flat fronts, but they can take considerably longer when cabinets are unique and more detailed. Lightly sand the doors using a wood sanding block, working to create a firm base to which fresh paint can easily adhere. Areas that are most exposed to wear and tear may require some extra elbow grease, and some areas may be especially flaky. When old paint is flaking off, this means the previous finish did not adhere very well to the surface, which is not necessarily uncommon in kitchens, where moisture and grease residue can make it harder for paint to adhere to the surface. In such instances, sand the flaky areas to the bare wood before spot-priming with a primer or sealer designed for areas with

When removing hardware, be sure to set them aside in clearly marked plastic bags so it’s easier to reassemble the cabinets once the fresh coat of paint has dried. As doors are removed, number each door and its corresponding location, much like products that require assembly are numbered at the factory. This makes it easier to reassemble and ensures the cabinets and their hinges will align properly once you have finished painting. Don’t paint dirty surfaces. Cabinet surfaces have likely collected their share of dirt, grease and grime over the years, so you want to clean these surfaces thoroughly before painting. Once surfaces have been cleaned, rinse them off and give them

I got in! Last week, as I was going through my e-mails, I was pleasantly surprised to see one addressed from Emory University. It told me to check the online portal to learn of my admission decision. Thankfully, when I checked the website, I was accepted. Located in Atlanta, Georgia, Emory University is one of the nation’s leading schools for Business and Journalism. Luckily, these are the two fields I have interest in pursuing. Emory University is the twentieth ranked college in the United States of America. Although not many

people from Long Island have heard of Emory, the opportunities that it will afford me are endless. As I was admitted into Oxford College, one of Emory’s freshman and sophomore institutions, I will be an upperclassman during my second year. This would allow me to take advantage of the leadership positions historically reserved for seniors. Involving myself in oncampus happenings will strengthen my application for graduate school and enrich my campus experience. Even though Emory is very far away, it has a perfect mix of urban

and rural influences. My parents are hesitant for me to enroll, as it is in a foreign area. It is hard to pass up such a prestigious education, so I have to visit to be sure it is the right place for me. As I write this article, I am sitting on a plane headed for Atlanta, row 35, seat C, contemplating my future. In a few hours, I will be on campus, where I hope to spend my next four years. Next week, I hope to tell you about my experience. I hope it is a positive one! With any luck, I will meet some very nice people and have a great time. Go Eagles!

Continued From 4 heavy staining. After all of the sanding is complete, vacuum the surfaces to ensure there is no leftover sanding dust before painting. Apply primer-sealer. Primer-sealer ensures the fresh paint will bond well to the surfaces, preventing conditions like flaking in the future. Paint the cabinets. After the primer-sealer has been applied, it’s time to paint the cabinets.

Begin with the inside edges and openings of the face frames, followed by the outer cabinet sides and then the front of the frames. Then move on to the cabinet doors and any drawer fronts you might be painting as well. Cabinets with more elaborate designs require closer attention to detail than flat cabinets. When painting, opt for thin coats, which dry more quickly and also create fewer visible brushstrokes. When applying multiple

coats, allow the paint ample time to dry between coats. Four hours between coats is a good rule of thumb, and lightly resand all surfaces before applying the second and final coat of paint. Reassemble the cabinets. Once the final coat of paint has fully dried, carefully reassemble your cabinets and then enjoy the fresh and inexpensive new look that your freshly painted cabinets have created.

Flooring Options Many homeowners prefer the look and durability of real hardwood flooring. It can be exciting to install new flooring, and you may be anxious to start transforming a room. But before diving right in, it’s necessary to acclimate wood flooring to a home. Otherwise, you may end up with buckled wood or

other problems. Hardwood flooring needs to sit in the room where it will be installed for anywhere between five and 10 days or in adherence to the manufacturer recommendations. This gives the new flooring time to adjust to the humidity level and temperature of the home.

Improve Your Home & Diet Planting a garden can add aesthetic appeal and functionality to a property. Vegetable gardens can transform landscapes while putting healthy and homegrown food on the table. By growing their own fruits and vegetables, homeowners have total control over what foods can be harvested, and they can ensure sustainable, safe practices are used to care for the plants. Vegetable gardens can be compact or expansive, depending on how much space is available to cultivate. However, firsttime gardeners may want to begin small so they can hone their skills and experiment to see which plants are most likely to thrive in their gardens. Expansion is always a possibility down the road. Choose A Location Spend some time examining your landscape. Vegetables generally need ample warmth and sunlight to thrive, so find an area of the yard that gets several hours of direct sunlight per day. A sunny spot is good, but you also want a

Suffolk Jail Tours When Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco began offering “Youth Enlightenment” personal jail tours in 2010 for parents and their at-risk youth, he didn’t realize the impact it would have on the teenage participants. “We wanted to show young people the realities of jail: the loud sounds of cells clanking shut, the lack of privacy, the noises, and we wanted these youth to come away with a strong

feeling that jail was not a place they wanted to be,” stated DeMarco. He added, “But what we learned over time by giving these tours is that the parents of these defiant kids really need support. The Correction Officers who run these tours have become a resource for parents who don’t know where else to turn for help.” The personal jail tours are available to Suffolk County residents and their

children over the age of 13. When someone requests a personal jail tour for their teen through the Sheriff’s website, it will initiate a call from a Correction Officer who will often talk with the parent about the problems they are having with their child, and an appointment is made to visit the Riverhead Correctional Facility, in a group setting or individually. Once they arrive at the jail, the youth and their

parents will learn about the day-to-day life inside the correctional facility. After the introduction, the Correction Officer will show them the crowded holding cells and walk through different housing areas. The tour ends in the jail’s chapel area where inmates will talk frankly with the youth about how their own poor decisions led to incarceration. “A lot of the kids and their parents are very emotional

Politi, MD, FACP, FACEP, President/CEO of the NuHealth System, announces that the Nassau University Medical Center’s pediatrics department will be the recipient of the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce “Walk, Ride, Read for Success” – a fun event for the entire family to support the launch of the “Reach Out and Read” program. “Walk, Ride, Read for Success” takes place on May 18th, from 1 to 4 p.m., at Field 1, Eisenhower Park, East Meadow (rain or shine, no rain date). “Chamber members want to make all of our community’s citizens

Family Fun Night

Students, their families, and even faculty recently enjoyed a spectacular evening at Village Elementary School’s annual Family Fun Night. There were crafts and games of all kinds, along with pizza, popcorn, cotton candy, and other yummy treats. Music by Hart to Hart Entertainment moved everyone to show off their best dance moves. The most anticipated part of the evening was the

announcement of the raffle winners. More than 100 gift baskets featuring fabulous prizes such as an overnight stay at Oheka Castle, passes to Disney World, and a Sony PlayStation 4 were raffled off at the end of the evening to the delight of many winners. Other popular prizes included amazing themed baskets generously put together by parents in each of the six grades. There was Dining & Entertainment,

Arts & Crafts, and Brain Games to name just a few. But perhaps the most sought-after prize was Principal for a Day, which was won by Gianna Terranova. A tremendous thank you goes out to the Family Fun Night committee and volunteers for all the months of hard work that went into preparing for this important night.

The exciting, week-long iGame4 Fitness program recently came to a close at Village School. During their regular physical education period, students in every grade participated in iGame4, a unique and fun program designed to help kids improve their endurance, flexibility, balance, and

overall health. The gymnasium was set up with several interactive video game stations, each featuring a spectacular 100” screen projector. The students rotated through the various game stations, exercising and burning calories while having a blast! The special event

concluded with Family Fitness Night, when parents and siblings were invited to join the students to try out iGame4 for themselves. Many thanks to Arts in Education Chairpersons, Debra Ceglia and Evelyn O’Donnell for bringing this fun fitness program to Village.

Pack It Up For Purim In advance of the Purim holiday, which took place on March 15th and 16th, the Young Israel of Plainview recently participated in a farreaching effort to provide food for those in need. Known as Pack It Up For Purim, this fourth annual event brought out droves of volunteers to help with the efforts. The event is under the auspices of an effort known as Feeding Our Neighbors: An Interfaith Response, an initiative organized by the UJA Federation in conjunction with the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York. While it is always important to help those in need, the effort bore additional significance due to the underlying themes of Purim. During this yearly Jewish holiday, congregants, friends and neighbors alike take the opportunity to exchange baskets of food

to one another, a hallowed tradition that began thousands of years ago. This concept of sending treats to those you know easily transitioned to the notion of giving food away to those in need. Many would argue that this recognizable parallel is not at all by coincidence. When all was said and done, the event was a rousing success. The participants collected a tremendous amount of food items, donating the entire lot to the Alix Rubinger Kosher Food Pantry in Massapequa, a both willing and grateful recipient. Iris Astrof, who can be reached at irisastrof@aol.com, and is a longtime volunteer at the pantry, was moved by the effort, saying “we are so appreciative for the all the hard work and determination of the participants. Today’s efforts will go a long way toward helping a lot of people.” Pack It Up For Purim

These efforts, which will have a both real and significant impact in the communities involved, have not reached a conclusion but, rather, will continue on as an annual event, much like the Purim holiday it will coincide with. Teen volunteer Sammy Gross was glad to be involved, saying “A family having food to eat is not a luxury but a basic human right. I wish we lived in world in which nobody had to worry about where their next meal was coming from. Until that day happens, I am happy to work with my friends and my synagogue to do my part to help out as many families in need as possible.”

Pet Supplies Plus and Natura, the makers of Evo, Innova, California Natural, Iams & Eukanuba pet foods have donated more than 80,000 pounds of dog food to help feed the hungry dogs of Long Island. All 10 Pet Supplies Plus locations on Long Island have participated in a “buy a pound/donate a pound” program to benefit pets in need. During the donation period of February 10th to March 9th, for every pound of Evo, Innova, Cal Natural, Iams or Eukanuba dog food purchased at a Pet Supplies Plus store, Natura donated a pound to the local food bank. 80,000 pounds of

dog food was sent in full trailer trucks on March 24th and March 26th to Long Island Cares, who graciously accepted the huge donation and made space in their warehouse. Pet Supplies Plus owner Stanley Lang says that, “Making sure that the animals of Long Island are properly fed and taken care of is near and dear to our hearts here at Pet Supplies Plus. We wouldn’t want struggling families to have to drop off their pets at the local animal shelter because they could not feed them. We hope this donation helps hundreds if not thousands of families

Just over one month ago, the Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo welcomed two fluffy Blackbelly sheep into its enormous family one female and one male. In addition, another female was born three weeks later! When the Game Farm finally opens its doors next month, visitors will be able to get a glimpse of all three for the very first time. The three newest American Blackbelly sheep were bred and born right on the grounds of the Game Farm. They will be

featured in the nursery section of the farm, and guests will be able to bottle feed these adorable, ebonycolored animals beginning on opening day - April 12th, during scheduled times throughout the day. Since the sheep do not have names yet, the Game Farm has initiated a naming contest for all three newborns. Contestants may visit the Game Farm’s Facebook page to enter the contest for a chance to win a Family Fun Pass. Those who wish to participate can enter one name for each of

the three baby sheep. The American Blackbelly sheep are small to medium-sized sheep that are extremely energetic and playful. They are a type of hair sheep and are actually a cross between Barbados Blackbelly with the Mouflon and the Rambouillet sheep. They all have distinct coat pattern, which range from tan, to brown, to red with black markings. Rams generally display spectacular horns, while ewes generally are polled, which means hornless. Typically, they grow more or less wool according to winter conditions. “We are so excited to introduce these three cuddly babies to our guests this upcoming season,” says Melinda Novak, CoOwner, Long Island Game Farm. “They are adorably friendly animals that will be sure to put smiles on our visitors’ faces.” The deadline for submissions is May 31st.
