Science Olympiad

he Science Olympiad teams at Hicksville Middle School in the Hicksville Public School District participated in the New York State Western Long Island Regional Competition, and Team A qualified for the state competition. The teams competed in 23 events, including anatomy and building a wheeled vehicle. Team A placed sixth of 42 teams, and will head to Syracuse to compete against teams throughout the state.

Geo Bee South Grove Elementary School fourth-grader Timothy Chan was recently selected to compete in the National Geographic Society’s Geographic State Bee in Albany. The state-level competition is the second tier of the contest, which has been in existence for the past 27 years.

The fifth grade at HANC Plainview concluded their March Mathness celebration where they experienced math beyond the textbook in many different ways. They calculated pi with round objects, measured the planets to scale and created a mural, learned about Albert Einstein

and his accomplishments while dressed as scientists, acted out fractions and used their bodies to make mathematical expressions, used measurement and fractions to bake pies, read the book PIE, collected garbage around the perimeter of the building to create a cleaner area, predicted the

Diane Weiner is the recipient of the Long Island Family and Consumer Science (LIFACS) Professionals’ Orchid Award. Ms. Weiner is a retired teacher from the Bethpage School District. During the awards breakfast held at the Suffolk County Community College Culinary Arts & Hospitality Center in Riverhead on March 20th, she told the audience, “It is a great honor to receive this award for retired LIFACS

professionals. I have been involved for so many years, the people I serve with seem like family. While I could imagine leaving the classroom, I couldn’t envision stopping my work with this wonderful organization.” Ms. Weiner currently serves as the LIFACS Long Island area coordinator and co-chair of professional development. LIFACS is a subchapter of the New York State association. It supports teachers in the classroom and helps to

keep the content area alive. Workshops and conferences support teachers with new ways to enhance and enrich real-life experiences for students. Teachers use the STEM curriculum of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It is the only professional association dedicated to teaching family and consumer science to students from multiple practice settings and content areas.

Time for Buddy: The Sequel. As some of my more loyal readers may recall, I recently adopted my very own Betta fish, Buddy. He’s currently one and a half months old in time-spent-in-myfishbowl years, which has already surpassed the lifespan of most of my previous goldfish, surely a good sign. Like most fishy friends, it seems Buddy’s main mission is to eat. Constantly. Every time he catches a glimpse of me, here he comes, face pressed up against the glass, ﬂippers “wagging”

expectantly. And then there’s the chewing. The adorable motion he makes when consuming his special Betta ﬂakes is nothing short of precious. Who knew fish had teeth! Aside from his daily meal, Buddy seems content to swim endless laps around his prized plant decoration, occasionally knocking it from the gravel in his mad exuberance. Once exhausted, he generally settles under one of the branches for a little ﬂoating shut-eye – with eyes wide open of course. That usually only lasts until the instant he spies me, as even the slightest

prospect of food ends any siesta. Sure, he may not be as entertaining as a puppy or kitten or some other furry critter, but Buddy provides his own unique level of amusement from beyond the bowl. I think he’s adjusted quite well to life as a member of my household. Of course, that may be said for anyone who feeds him but… I still say Buddy and I have developed a special bond. Here’s hoping for many more milestones celebrated with my new fishy friend – and many more meals consumed together!

Dr. Lorna Lewis, Superintendent of Plainview-Old Bethpage CSD, was honored by more than 400 of Long Island’s most ardent public education supporters this month. Dr. Lewis is one of 13 honorees to receive the 2015 Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award at the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation’s ninth annual gala. The distinction is bestowed on those individuals or organizations that have made a substantial impact on public education in Nassau County. A strategic education partner with school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created the awards program to recognize those who share its mission of ensuring a successful, challenging, caring and safe environment that enables students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential. These outstanding individuals and organizations have made strides to

accomplishing key educational goals embraced by Nassau BOCES, such as ensuring student success. Children from Manhasset and across the town of North Hempstead are invited to participate in the Lose the Training Wheels-Ride a Two Wheeler program this April and May. This free program offers six 45 minute sessions to help kids of all ages learn the skills needed to ride a bike. Funded by Manhasset Special Education PTA and run by Be the Best Sport, the workshops take place on Sunday, April 19th, April 26th and May 3rd. There are two sessions available each week, with session one beginning at 1 p.m. and session two starting at

1:45 p.m. The workshops are held at Unlimited Sports Action in Port Washington, in a private black top lot in the back of the building. Families can sign up for one, two or all three sessions. Children are asked to bring their training wheels bike or two wheeler bike, helmet, protective gear and an adult to the workshop. Bike riders at any skill level are welcomed, from just starting with training wheels to two wheeler beginner balancing. The goal of the program is to have participants ride a two wheeler with confidence as

they start pedaling, make turns, build and reduce speed, and come to a balance as they stop. The program will be headed by the adaptive sports and physical trainers at Be the Best Sport. With one-on-one attention, the trainers will breakdown the skills needed for balance and coordination to learn to ride a two wheeler bike. Spring Festivals Set Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto invites residents and their families to come outside and celebrate springtime at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Annual Spring Festival. “For five years now, this free event has become a fun weekend destination for our residents and their children,” Supervisor Venditto said. “The Spring Festival features all sorts of fun activities for children of all ages, including

A music and art collaboration spearheaded by Hicksville High School senior Sebastian Niculescu was one of the highlights of the Hicksville Public School District Band Concert. Niculescu, who is the Class of 2015 valedictorian and was named a scholarartist earlier in the year, created a multimedia medley of moving images to accompany the high school wind ensemble’s performance of “Sparkle,” a seven-minute long piece of music. He represented

his vision through 13 different video creations, each of which was shown simultaneously on separate displays throughout the auditorium - six large television sets, four projectors displaying their images on walls, and three built-in screens. The videos, which were comprised of various images such as hands, mouths and eyes, were shown using DVD players, and each had to be triggered at the exact same time to ensure alignment with the music.

Terrence Clark, Superintendent of the Bethpage UFSD, was honored by more than 400 of Long Island’s most ardent public education supporters this month. Mr. Clark is one of 13 honorees to receive the 2015 Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award at the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation’s ninth annual gala. The distinction is bestowed

on those individuals or organizations that have made a substantial impact on public education in Nassau County. A strategic education partner with school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created the awards program to recognize those who share its mission of ensuring a successful, challenging, caring and safe environment that enables

students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential. These outstanding individuals and organizations have made strides to accomplishing key educational goals embraced by Nassau BOCES, such as ensuring student success. The Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation is an independent nonprofit organization that raises funds for innovative educational programs that fall outside of the agency’s budget. Since the start of his career in the Bethpage school district, Mr. Clarka has continually found new ways to expand students’ horizons and enhance instruction. He launched a

state-of-the-art technology program that became the model for districts throughout Long Island. Bethpage was one of the earliest districts to provide students with home access to the school network, transforming learning into a 24/7 experience. Mr. Clark spearheaded the groundbreaking 21st Century Scholars’ Program, establishing digital portfolios for every student, and today, all students from grades three through nine have a Chromebook computer. Under Mr. Clark’s leadership, Kramer Lane Elementary School was selected by the U.S. Department of Education

as a National Blue Ribbon School and designated an Exemplary HighPerforming School. Newsweek named Bethpage High School one of America’s top high schools.
