Adventure is Near Now entering its 48th Season, the Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo will officially open on Thursday, April 13th. During the opening weeks, guests will have the opportunity to learn about the forthcoming baby animals, including chicks, ducklings and kid goats, and will be able to pet and hand feed the animals once
they are born. Though some of the park’s Summer animals (giraffe, camels and lemurs) are still vacationing in Florida until May, the Spring season is always an especially fun and relaxing time for guests to visit, with cooler weather, smaller crowds and lower prices. In celebration of the season opening, the park is offering a reduced
Spring admission price of $14.95+ per child (age 3 to 12), senior (age 62+) or military personnel; and $16.95+ per adult (age 13 to 61). As always, discount coupons will be available online and through the company’s Facebook page. “We are so excited to get started on 48th season,” says Melinda Novak, Vice President/Co-Owner, Long Island Game Farm. “We

always love seeing the children welcome our new baby animals and we look forward to visits from the families, schools and organizations each year. In addition to the Springtime fun, we have a lot of new events, shows and activities planned for the 2017 Season, so be sure to check our Website and social media pages for up-to-date details.” Now is also a great time to book school trips, children’s birthday parties
and company outings, in addition to securing spots for summer events such as birthdays and camp trips. For opening weekend, the Long Island Game Farm – Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, April 13th to Saturday, April 15th (Closed Sunday, April 16th for Easter). Additionally, the park will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the following dates: Friday, April 21st to Sunday, April 23rd; Thursday, April 27th
to Sunday, April 30th; Thursday, May 4th to Sunday, May 7th; Thursday, May 11th to Sunday, May 14th. The Long Island Game Farm – Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo will be open seven days per week (10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday; and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday) starting Thursday, May 18th. we recognize and are so grateful for the support of friends like TFCU. The delicious brunch they prepared for our families and their generous donation make a difficult time much easier for our resident families. While a family is dealing with the pain of having a child in the hospital, knowing they can count on our community makes their journey a little bit easier,” said Matthew Campo, President Ronald McDonald House of Long Island. “Our TFCU volunteers and I had a memorable and gratifying experience at Ronald McDonald House. Before returning to the hospital to be with their children, Ronald McDonald House residents enjoyed the brunch we made. We were also pleased to make a donation in support of Ronald McDonald House, an organization that provides support for families when they need it most,” said Jennifer Gunn, TFCU Marketing Manager. “Over the years, Ronald McDonald House has

Springtime Sniffles Less than one week into the new season, and I came down with a cold. Not just any cold, mind you – the epitome of chest colds, complete with congestion, sinus pressure and one of those irritating, incessant sort of tickles in the back of the throat that seem to kick into high gear right around bedtime. All winter, and not a sniffle. That, I believe, is what they call irony. So, too, is the fact that those who have been looking forward to spring with such anticipation are already bemoaning the pouring rain we’ve been experiencing over the last week or so. April showers
bring May flowers, do they not? At least that’s how the old saying goes. Of course, some flowers have already blossomed thanks to the unseasonably warm temperatures scattered throughout March and, as such, have gone back to hibernating for the duration. More irony, indeed. No worries, there are certainly plenty of flowers to be had over the next several months, along with green grass and flourishing trees and… pollen and sap and weeds and mold spores… There’s nothing like the great outdoors. Just be sure to stock up on tissues and allergy pills before you venture out. And maybe an umbrella,
for good measure. Spring is a perfect representation of life as a whole. It’s filled with much anticipation of better days, often precluded by clouds and unseasonable changes in temperature, or moods, if you will. And still, there are those who would just as soon skip right over it into summer, assuming that sunshine and surf and sand equal happiness; when really, the unknown is never guaranteed to be better than the present. And that, dear readers, is the essence of it all. Appreciate today and all the sniffles and sunbursts it may bring; stop and pick a flower, splash in a puddle, enjoy the moment. It’s the only one you’ve got.

The Syosset School District is proud to announce that Syosset High School’s Virtual Enterprise International team, Flip Chip, will advance to the 2016-2017 National Business Plan Competition. Flip Chip is one of only four teams from Long Island heading to the national finals, which will be held at the Microsoft Technology Center in New York City on April 3rd. In its inaugural year in Syosset, the VEI program has experienced tremendous success, with all four teams (Flip Chip, Alternative Reality Entertainment, Nice Pops and AAA Turbo Tech) receiving accolades. Flip Chip and ARE were two of only 10 teams chosen to participate in the Long Island Regional
Competition held earlier this month at American Portfolios Financial in Holbrook. VEI students take on the roles of business professionals and create a workplace environment in the classroom. They brainstorm ideas for a product, service or marketable concept, then establish their company by submitting resumes and cover letters to hopefully land an interview for various positions, including the CEO. Flip Chip markets a line of allnatural, environmentally sustainable and tasty potato chips. According to Flip Chip VEI teacher Matthew Fiasconaro, the team has been reviewing video from the previous competition and making adjustments to their presentation.
They also invited Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tom Rogers and Deputy Superintendent Adele Bovard to sit in on their presentation and provide feedback. Fiasconaro said the intent was for the students to rehearse their presentation in front of district administrators to match the intensity the students expect to face during the national competition. “The Flip Chip team is really excited with all the attention that they have been receiving lately,” said Fiasconaro. “Yet they remain focused and driven on the task at hand, which is to win the National Business Plan Competition.” Photo courtesy of: Syosset School District

DUNE DAY - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently joined with Town Officials, Islanders’ legend Bobby Nystrom and caring Volunteers at the 2017 Dune Stabilization Project at TOBAY Beach. Since 1989, the Dune Stabilization Project has been an initiative to help protect TOBAY Beach. This recent event included many caring volunteers working side by side for a great cause. Planting dune grass goes a long way in stabilizing the construction of dunes as it enhances and protects the beach’s environment.

Adelphi support center do for women diagnosed with breast cancer. It made me proud to be able to help them in any way that we can.” This was echoed by another volunteer Nicole Pullano who said, “Going to Adelphi and learning about the program helped us learn how much of a difference we are making and how every little bit helps.” The Junior Coalition of MWCABC was formed in 2003 as a charitable organization for Manhasset teenage girls. Elise Dadourian, Junior Coalition coordinator, says their purpose is to provide education and awareness about breast cancer at a teenage appropriate level without fear, to generate compassion and understanding for those afflicted with the disease and the family and friends affected by it, and to join together to raise funds for breast cancer research and patient support programs. Says Hillary Rutter, the executive director of the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program, “These young women set an admirable example of community service.” The funds are being used to support educational programs such as “Feel Better and Have More Energy After Breast Cancer” on May 1 and “Using Mindfulness and Meditation to Cope with Breast Cancer” on May 22nd, both held at Adelphi in Garden City. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program offers emotional support and information to those coping with breast cancer. Call 800.877.8077 to speak with a breast cancer survivor. On the Ebb Tide By: Gene McParland
The power of the ocean’s flow is felt on the incoming tide. A building of momentum, a surge, explosions, fire crashing on rocks. Life is like that. A surging battle uphill; attainment; engulfment; then a period of peace begins. The energy of the high water flow can bring nutriments, or bring destruction, but it always brings change. On the ebb tide, assessments can be made, as old ground is revealed again to the light. It is a time of peace, re-charging, quietude; A realization comes that whatever is done, is done; nothing is really controllable. On the ebb tide no conflicts; just peace; acceptance and rest until the next high tide.

vehicle. Changing the Air Filter About every 10,000+ miles you put on your car, change the air filter. It can be easily removed and replaced as it’s generally secured with only a few metal clips. Lubricate Moving Parts Regularly lubricating your vehicle’s moving
parts such as door, hood and trunk hinges will not only prevent squeaking when you open or close them, but will keep them from wear or damage due to the constant movement and corrosion from wet weather. Prevent squeaks and corrosion from building up in the future by using
a water-displacement lubricant such as WD-40® Multi-Use Product. The new WD-40 EZ-REACH™ can make this process easier with its attached 8-inch flexible straw that bends and keeps its shape. Monitoring Tire Pressure If your car’s tire pressure is too low, you will wear out your tires more quickly
and will get poor fuel efficiency. Tire pressure gauges are inexpensive and an easy way to determine the pressure in your tires. Find your vehicle’s recommended PSI and how to test it in the owner’s manual. Compare the number on the gauge with your vehicle’s recommended PSI and add
or release air to match it. Do this regularly on all four tires. Arm yourself with the right tools and you can save money by tackling easy car maintenance projects. For more information about how to make automotive repairs simpler, visit www. wd40.com/EZ.
Seven Mistakes Grocery Shoppers Make Seven Mistakes Grocery Shoppers Make (NAPSI)—You may save yourself time, money and trouble at the grocery store if you avoid these seven common errors that shoppers make: 1. Consumers don’t make a list before they go. It always helps to have a clear plan of what you’re going to buy before you hit the store. To help, there are a number of apps that can get you organized. One,
ZipList, is an online recipe box and shopping list system that syncs across desktop, tablet and mobile devices, so you can stick to your list and not forget important ingredients. 2. Shoppers buy food when they’re hungry. Shopping hungry often leads to impulse buys and purchasing more than you need. 3. They don’t look down. Brands pay a premium to be displayed at eye level, so
looking down can be a way to find the same-quality items at lower prices. 4. People shy away from the generic brands. You’ve had your go-to cereal for years but your grocery store may be offering the same ingredients in a generic cereal for a fraction of the cost. 5. They go during peak hours. Shopping for the week on Sunday afternoon? Looks like everyone had the same idea. Try to

East Meadow Champions Thirty-five East Meadow High School students were honored for demonstrating exemplary character and conduct during the school’s annual Breakfast of Champions ceremony on March 24th. They were recognized among their parents, teachers and administrators for displaying admirable character traits and positive qualities both in and outside of the school community. “It is a pleasure and an honor to recognize these students for being who they are and making a positive impact on the East Meadow High School community,” said Assistant Principal Robert Hardwick. An East Meadow
Champion is one who thinks of others and makes consistent positive contributions to his or her surroundings. The honorees were nominated by their teachers for exemplifying academic success, respect and positivity among their peers, school and community. This year’s East Meadow Champions are: Alyssa Brouillet Skylar Caruso Jae Citarella Jennifer Conk Julia Cuttone Joseph De Nicola Ridannelyn Gibs Gallo Aliandro Goncalves Haley Hatzelman Jillian Hendler Jackson Himonidid

Harvesting Learning In observance of New York Agricultural Literacy Week, held March 20th24th, second-graders at Parkway and Meadowbrook elementary schools in the East Meadow School District received a visit from Laurie Murdoch, a volunteer with Cornell Cooperative Extension, for a lesson on agriculture.
Murdoch read “The Grapes Grow Sweet” by Lynne Tuft, a story about a young boy named Julian who is old enough to take part in the grape harvest on his family’s farm. The story provides a glimpse of what it’s like to grow up in a vineyard and explains the process of growing grapes. Following, students
asked questions about harvesting grapes, working in a vineyard and how they can grow fruits and vegetables in their own backyards. In addition, Cornell Cooperative Extension donated a copy of the book to each school’s library for student use.

Inspired by the NCAA tournament, a spirit of competition was in the air in the East Meadow School District when W.T. Clarke Middle School students competed in the school’s March Madness basketball tournament on March
24th. Thirty-two teams consisting of sixththrough eighth-grade students gathered in the gymnasium to participate in three-on-three tournament-style games, eliminating each other
until one team earned the title of March Madness Champions. The tournament gave students the chance to hone their basketball skills while demonstrating teamwork, collaboration and sportsmanship.
ACCESS Workshop Members of the community joined East Meadow School District staff and administrators at the Leon J. Campo Salisbury Center on March 21st for the final ACCESS workshop held this year. Project ACCESS (A Community Committed to Educating Students for Success) is a subcommittee of the district’s PTA Curriculum Council that sponsors educational workshops for parents throughout the school year. The most recent workshop, titled “Never Alone,” examined
the effects of addiction and the treatment and self-help programs available within the community. Sponsored by the East Meadow PTA Council in conjunction with the East Meadow Kiwanis, attendees experienced an evening of knowledge, empowerment and hope as guest speakers from Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous shared their testimonies about addiction and how it affected their relationships and lives. Members of Al-Anon and Nar-Anon spoke about coping
with a friend’s or family member’s addiction. In addition, a representative from the YES Community Counseling Center provided a wealth of information about programs to prevent and treat addiction. The audience was enlightened by these personal stories and appreciative of the amount of support the East Meadow community provides to help individuals and families in the fight against addiction.

A special ceremony was held to honor Elizar’s accomplishments and his many years of hard work to achieve the designation of Eagle Scout.
DISTINGUISHED ARTISTS - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph S. Saladino recently attended the Town’s 2017 Distinguished Artists Concert, at the Hicksville Public Library. The group “Breakdown” is Long Island’s premiere Tom Petty Tribute band. The audience appreciated the outstanding music that these five Long Island musicians collaborated, known as the ultimate Tom Petty experience.
Dr. Recess
Reading Partners
Second-graders at Parkway Elementary School in the East Meadow School District learned about the importance of being active and maintaining a healthy lifestyle when PlayFit Education founder Dr. Curt Hinson - aka “Dr. Recess” - led an interactive assembly at the school on March 23rd. According to its website, PlayFit Education specializes in fitness,
health, physical education and playground programs that focus on play, fitness and social-emotional health. The company’s Dr. Recess Assembly and Playground Games Program was created to serve elementary schools throughout the nation. Dr. Hinson educated the young students about new and exciting ways to learn, grow and develop healthy lifestyles through play. This play includes grade
level-appropriate games that enhance students’ social-emotional, critical thinking and motor skills. Following the indoor assembly, the students met Dr. Hinson outside during their recess time to participate in the activities he had taught them. Using dodge balls, hula hoops and cones, they engaged in games such as “Keep Away” and “One Bounce” with their classmates.
C u l m i n a t i n g Meadowbrook Elementary School’s two-week Pick a Reading Partner program, local officials and community leaders joined East Meadow School District professionals on March 24th to read to kindergarten through fifth-grade classes. Following the school’s PARP theme of “Step Right Up, Read a Book,” student
representatives from each class posed with the guest readers for a picture alongside giant circus curtains and decorative props such as balloons, popcorn and top hats before escorting them to their classroom. Among those who read grade level-appropriate books to the students were Hempstead Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad,
Assemblyman Tom McKevitt, Nassau County Legislator Norma Gonzalves, PTA Council President Donna LaScala, district administrators and other influential community members. After the guests had finished reading, the students asked them about their professional careers and how reading has helped them to succeed.

Sleep Better, Stress Less
(NAPSI)-Here’s eyeopening news: Recently published research from Oklahoma State University suggests that improving quality of sleep not only reduces stress, but also helps us manage everyday stress.
“When you’re stressed and tired, every aspect of your life is affected,” says lifestyle expert and spokesperson for the Better Sleep Council, Lissa Coffey. “Controlling stress and getting a good night’s rest start with
evaluating your lifestyle.” Dr. Douglas MacKay, N.D., vice president, scientific and regulatory affairs, Council for Responsible Nutrition, agrees: “Eating a healthy diet, taking vitamins and other supplements,
exercising regularly and getting adequate amounts of sleep are all part of a healthy lifestyle.” Here are more tips to help you sleep better and stress less: 1. Eat a well-balanced
diet. 2. Take your vitamins, including a daily multivitamin. Ask your doctor about other supplements, like valerian, for healthy sleep. 3. Evaluate your mattress-
-consider replacing it if it’s five to seven years old or older. Learn more about sleep at www.lifesupplemented.org and at www.bettersleep.org.
(NAPSI)—A total of 68 percent of U.S. households own a pet, according to the American Pet Products Association (APPA), with 56.7 million owning a dog and 45.3 million owning a cat. If your home is among them, you may care to heed these seven hints to keep your pet healthy from the experts at the American Veterinary Medical Association: 1. Maintain your pet at a
healthy weight; 2. Exercise your pet; 3. Feed a balanced, nutritious diet; 4. Visit the veterinarian at least once a year to make sure your pet is healthy and to help detect problems earlier; 5. Vaccinate your pet against potentially deadly diseases such as distemper, parvo, panleukopenia and rabies; 6. Spay/neuter your dog or cat;
7. Keep your pet free of ticks and fleas. Fleas can be responsible for skin conditions such as flea allergy dermatitis in dogs and miliary dermatitis in cats. Fleas also transmit other parasites including tapeworms. A flea infestation is something no pet owner ever wants to face—especially as nearly half of dogs and 62 percent of cats sleep in their owner’s bed, according to the APPA.
To help, you can now get a fast-acting oral medication for treating flea infestations containing veterinarianrecommended active ingredient nitenpyram. PetArmor FastCaps (nitenpyram) is an overthe-counter tablet that begins working in 30 minutes to kill fleas on your pet, making it an excellent alternative to topical flea medication, since this protection can’t
19
Seven Steps To Keeping Your Pet Healthy rub or wash off. There’s no odor or messy application on your pet or in your house. What’s more, you don’t have to separate pets in multipet households. It cuts out the mess and does exactly what you need it to do: kill fleas fast. When used as directed, a single dose kills the adult fleas on your dog or cat. If your pet gets reinfested, you can safely give another dose as often as once a
day. It’s generally best to treat all infested pets in the household at the same time, as fleas can reproduce on untreated pets and allow infestations to persist. PetArmor FastCaps tablets are available for dogs, puppies, cats and kittens 4 weeks of age or older and 2 to 25 pounds, or for dogs over 25 pounds. They’re safe for pregnant or breeding dogs and cats, too.

Carry-On Made Easier (NAPSI)-Doing a little homework before you travel could save you time at the airport. For instance, visiting www.TSA.gov, the Transportation Security Administration’s Web site, can help you learn
what items can be packed in carry-on and which are best left in checked suitcases. You can also learn size requirements for toiletries that are allowed on planes and then find properly sized items in stores.
As a final tip, remember that all carry-on gels, liquids and aerosols need to be placed in a 1-quart, single zip-top, clear plastic bag. For more information and tips, visit www.shave.com.

(NAPSI)—Many people ma(NAPSI)—Better hearing may be at your fingertips. No, don’t stick your fingers in your ears. Put your hands on your computer to access free, easy-to-use online tools designed to help you live well with hearing loss. A new suite of online tools makes it easier to manage everyday communication and important decisions about your hearing. Developed by the nonprofit Ida Institute, Ida Telecare is a combination of interactive tools and engaging videos that help you identify your communication needs and concerns. These tools can help you get the most from time spent with your hearing care professional and provide ongoing support post-appointment.
“Research consistently shows that people who self-manage their hearing loss experience greater satisfaction with hearing care and hearing technologies,” explains Ida Institute Managing Director Lise Lotte Bundesen. The site’s Living Well section helps prepare you for appointments by encouraging you to think about your needs and concerns with a series of open-ended questions. My Turn to Talk lets you prioritize the people with whom you communicate. Web-based drag-anddrop technology lets you create circles of those “most important,” “very important” and “less important” people. A series of prompts can help you organize your thoughts.
The Everyday Life with Hearing Loss part provides tips to help you manage conversations, simple strategies to alert others to your hearing loss, ways to improve communication, and ideas on day-to-day interactions. The Storytelling Videos offer insight and inspiration from others’ experiences. You can save notes and completed sessions to your computer and e-mail them to your audiologist or print them out to bring to your appointment. Then, you can work together to map out the strategies and goals that are best for you. For more information, visit www.idainstitute. com. Five Tips On Moving (NAPSI)—According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 12 percent of Americans move to new homes every year. The next time you’re among them, you may be able to save time, trouble and money when you choose a professional mover—you won’t have to worry about renting equipment, paying hidden costs, handling heavy or bulky items and being responsible if something goes wrong. Here are five hints to help.
1. Be wary of any “guaranteed” estimates offered over the phone or online. Make sure you show the mover everything that needs to be moved, and get at least three estimates to compare. Avoid any that are too high or too low. 2. Check the company’s ratings with the Better Business Bureau and other consumer websites, and ask family and friends for referrals. 3. Make sure all agreements are in writing, and get a copy of everything
you sign, especially the bill of lading. Never sign any blank forms. 4. Ask questions if you don’t understand something, and make sure your mover has your cell phone number to reach you. 5. Find a certified professional mover. For free estimates at no obligation to you, get free referrals from the American Moving & Storage Association at www.Moving.org.
Big, Colorful Ideas For Small Spaces ( N A P S I ) — T h e C(NAPSI)—Making a small room appear larger can be as simple as using color creatively. To add some breathing room to a compact space, all you need are some colorful ideas. “Color is one of the easiest, most affordable ways to transform the look and feel of a room,” says David Bromstad, HGTV® star and celebrity interior designer. “When used in a few well-chosen places, such as a feature wall or statement piece of furniture, color can have a big impact in a small space.” Bromstad offers these color tips for transforming a space from tiny to airy: Create a focal point with paint. Paint a statement wall that draws attention away from the size of your space and toward something beautiful and vibrant. Bright or bold colors work well, as the
wall can appear to recede, creating the illusion of space. Go big with lighter and softer colors. In areas beyond the feature wall, use lighter and softer colors to make the space seem larger. Light blues and greens add significant light subtly to a room. Coordinate your colors. Stretch your space and maximize impact by using color to coordinate your rooms and decor. HGTV® HOME by SherwinWilliams offers precoordinated collections of color, paint and wallpaper. The color palettes can be used to ensure that your walls, furniture and accessories help create a cohesive look. Reflect upon something. Placed opposite a window or side by side, mirrors can spread light throughout the room to make spaces feel larger. A tall mirror draws the eye up, making ceilings look taller. When
angled toward your room’s focal wall, a mirror can also create the illusion of depth. Paint something unexpected. Think beyond your walls and consider painting your mailbox or address numbers on your home, a stairway banister or a piece of furniture. Add a colorful punctuation point by transforming a bedroom nightstand bright blue or a desk chair in an unexpected orange. Everything else in the room will appear larger. “Clever use of color adds the illusion of space and injects personality into it as well. That’s what’s great about color; you can dramatically alter the look of a room while expressing yourself in a fun way,” Bromstad adds.
