Your Family Will Love

This week we're sharing a recipe for turkey meatloaf that requires only a handful of ingredients and is sure to please the entire family.

Preparation In a large mixing bowl, combine ground turkey, Lipton onion soup mix, eggs, water, ketchup and bread crumbs.

Use 2 lbs. of chopped turkey meat for a larger gathering of four or more people, or 1 lb. for three or less people. The below is the full recipe for 2 lbs. of turkey meat. For 1 lb. simply cut all ingredients in half.

Fold, knead and mix together using your hands (don't forget to wash hands after handling raw turkey meat). With a large serving spoon, scoop mixture into baking pan and evenly spread out, shaping into a loaf shape.

What You Will Need 2 lbs. of Ground Turkey 1 packet of Lipton Onion Recipe Soup & Dip Mix 2 Whole Eggs 3/4 Cup Water 1/3 Cup Ketchup 3/4 Cup Plain Dry Bread Crumbs

Place pan onto center rack of oven and bake for one hour. Let stand for ten minutes and serve with your favorite sides. Enjoy!

Your Thoughts Are Making You Stressed “Start by doing what’s necessary. Then, do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.” - St. Francis of Assisi Your life isn’t making you stressed. Your thoughts are making you stressed. If I had a dollar for every time I heard a friend, family member, business associate or a co-worker tell me they are stressed, I’d probably be retired. When a lot of tasks are on your plate at once, the human mind will fall in line with the perceived chaos of multiple deadlines or obligations, and will begin to scramble and spin around kind of like a dog frantically chasing its own tail. Have you ever witnessed a dog spin in circles chasing its own tail and going nowhere? It’s amusing and pity-inducing all at once, as you muse about what a futile effort it is. The dog is moving quickly, expending a great deal of energy and yet going nowhere. That is exactly what we do when we allow the mind to rapidly

spin in circles with stress. We are expending a great deal of energy and going nowhere. It is not the ten deadlines or laundry list of errands or looming term paper or sales quota that is making you stressed. It is your thoughts about said events that are making you stressed. Things, events and responsibilites are neither good nor bad; they just are. It is how we frame them within our emotional landscape and nervous system that determines how they make us feel. Many an afternoon, my son comes home from school declaring that he has too much to get done and it simply isn’t possible. It is true that he typically has some math homework, language arts homework, reading and guitar practice to juggle. When he does become overwhelmed, I let him know that it takes far more energy to “be overwhelmed” than it does to simply complete his tasks. Let that sink in. The truth is, the human mind has a tendency to underestimate the amount of time we have

and overestimate the amount of things that need to be done. We typically have more time than we perceive, more competency and stamina than we give ourselves credit for and less to actually do than our imagination would have us believe. When there is a storm of activity whirling around me, I keep it exactly there - around me, but not within me. The wind may blow my leaves around, but my trunk remains still. I know that nothing can be accomplished with chaotic energy, nor can it be accomplished by attempting to tackle everything at once. I make a mental note of what needs to get done, take each task one at a time, and work briskly yet attentively. I mentally pat myself on the back as each task is completed and crossed off my list. When others bring their frenetic energy into my sphere and express their own sense urgency, I let them know that I hear them and I understand the importance it has to them. I know that as I complete my tasks, one by one, all will get done and all will be well.

Drop and Read Students at the Bethpage Union Free School District’s Central Boulevard Elementary School celebrated Read Across America Day on March 1 to honor Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Throughout classrooms and the library, students

could be found reading Dr. Seuss books throughout the day while also engaging in fun literacy activities. Additionally, the entire school participated in a “Drop Everything and Read” event for 15 minutes as students gathered in the school’s gymnasium

and all-purpose room. Students also wore “The Cat in the Hat”-inspired headwear to honor the birthday celebration. The students brought the fun out of reading while celebrating the birthday of one of their favorite authors, Dr. Seuss!

Safety Slogan Contest A representative from the Long Island Rail Road recently visited students at Lee Avenue Elementary School in Hicksville to discuss the importance of exercising safety in, around and onboard the rails. While there, she also announced that Kristine McAllister’s fifth-grade class has been named this year’s elementarylevel winner of the LIRR’s Together Railroads and Communities Keeping Safe program safety slogan contest. Every year, hundreds of slogans are entered into the slogan

contest from classrooms throughout the LIRR’s service area. This year, McAllister’s class was selected as the winner for their slogan, “It’s a good sign if you have safety on your mind.” Class member Shakira Mashriqi was largely responsible for coming up with the initial idea on behalf of the class. After students discussed her idea, they agreed it was a memorable message to reinforce the importance of railroad safety. LIRR Community Relations Specialist Chrisann Fabio said the slogan will be displayed

on a large sign at the Hicksville LIRR station in the near future. She and other representatives from the LIRR will also return to Lee Avenue School in mid-March to formally congratulate and celebrate McAllister’s class. During her assembly, Fabio stressed the importance of exercising caution and being alert whenever in the vicinity of train tracks, especially near crossings. She specifically spoke about the dangers of being near the LIRR’s electrified third rail.

Set in Damon Runyon’s mythical New York City,

“Guys and Dolls” follows the stories of Nathan Detroit (played by Viren Fernandes), his fiancé Adelaide (Isha Nagpal), gambler Sky Masterson (Jack Immanuel) and the straight-laced Sarah Brown (Krisia Romano) from Times Square to the cafés of Havana, Cuba, and even into the sewers of New York City. Hailed as the perfect

The Bethpage Union Free School District’s John F. Kennedy Middle School celebrated school pride with Spirit Week, which was held from Feb. 11-15. The week kicked off with Pajama Day and Jersey Day, then continued with

a full display of Golden Eagle enthusiasm on Feb. 13 during Battle of the Classes. As a highlight to the celebrations, Battle of the Classes took place at the end of Colors Day. Each grade was designated a

school color to represent their class, with sixth grade in white, seventh grade in gold and eighth grade in blue. That afternoon, the three grades came together in the school’s gymnasium for a pep-rally-style event. Sixth-grader Daniel

Anicito, seventh-grader Emily Kossman and eighth-grader Adriana Lisa led the annual occasion as this year’s masters of ceremonies. Sporting their grade’s color, students competed against each other in team activities

such as musical chairs, human rock paper scissors and bag toss. Points were tallied throughout the event and members of the eighth-grade class were crowned the winners. Spirit week continued with Fictional Character

Day followed by Band/ Music Day as students showed their personalities through each theme. The district thanks all those who helped to put the spirit of JFK in the spotlight.

(NAPSI)—While many people turn to prescription drugs to try to control migraines once they start, there aren’t any that are terribly effective and none that will stop the migraines before they happen. There is, however, another option and it doesn’t involve taking medication. The Problem

More than 11 million people blame migraines for causing moderate to severe disability and 91 percent of them can’t function normally during migraine attack, according to the American Migraine Study, which also reveals that the

average migraine sufferer misses two days of work per year. It’s an expense both in terms of career—lost work—and medical costs. Migraine sufferers use 2.5 times the amount of prescription drugs and have six times as many diagnostic tests and services as nonsufferers. The average monthly

health cost of a migraine sufferer is 60 percent higher than that of people who don’t suffer from migraines, according to the National Institutes of Health. According to The Migraine Trust, migraine often occurs for the first time in teens and young adults but is most common in the 30-something age

How To Handle Depression If these symptoms look familiar, here are some things to do right now: • Recognize depression early. Depression can happen to anyone. It’s not a character defect, a weakness or a shameful condition. It’s a serious disorder that no one is immune to. • Engage in your life.

If you are depressed, you may feel like you don’t have an ounce of energy or motivation to tackle depression. Recovery, however, requires your active participation. Be willing to take the first step, even though it’s not easy. • Build your skills. Learn why you’re vulnerable to depression and specific ways to become more resilient by breaking unhealthy patterns of thought and behavior. Developing good coping

Thoughtful Get-Well Wishes Students at the Bethpage Union Free School District’s Central Boulevard Elementary School continued their Thoughtful Thursday monthly series with the creation of “get-well” cards and pictures. The cards and pictures were designed throughout

the school to help send best wishes to adults and children at St. Joseph’s Hospital, the Little Saint Nick Foundation and the Ronald McDonald House. Cards included colorful drawings as well as sentiments such as “get well soon,” “thinking of you,” “warm wishes”

April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.

In honor of Earth Day, an annual event celebrated on April 22nd, which brings awareness about environmental conservation, I chose an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is something each of us should be thankful for! If you would like to be a part of their mission and volunteer with this organization, you can! The following volunteer positions are available: Boat Crew Members, Boat Captains, Boat Maintence and Repair, Office Assistants, Building and Grounds Maintenance and Repair and Festival Booth Volunteers. Also, if you are interested in donating to their organization, you can safely and securly donate on their website when you click the ‘donate’ tab.

This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, OceanBay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more. They have 7 boats that go out in our waterways to patrol and pickup trash and debris between March and November. All of the boats are operated by volunteer captains and crews that give their time to go out on clean-up trips. Clean-up trips usually last about 3 hours. After their boats are taken out of the water for the season, they bring them back to their Freeport headquarters and immediately start to work on them to get them ready for the next season. They have rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters in 28 years! The amazing impact that Long Island Waterways sees from the work of
