Watering a lawn can do more harm than good if the lawn is not watered correctly. Excessive watering is a waste of water and can cost homeowners money while harming the environment at the same time. Water that is not absorbed by the lawn can result in runoff, which causes nitrogen in the grass, any fertilizer that was applied and chemicals in the water itself to run into gutters and eventually pollute streams, rivers and oceans. In addition, grass needs oxygen in the soil to grow properly. But when a lawn is overwatered, the oxygen between the soil particles is pushed out, depriving roots of the oxygen they need to grow in strong. This leads to shallow root systems, which make a lawn more susceptible to stress, disease and insect infestation. But overwatering can also be unsightly, as lawns that are overwatered tend to have more weeds, robbing even the greenest of lawns of its aesthetic appeal.

school; it has been found that income goes up 14 percent when a family has a bicycle. For many a sewing machine means having the possibility of making a livelihood. Pedals for Progress also promotes bicycle repair businesses in the developing world. A community owned nonprofit bike store will get its first containerized cargo shipment for free (about 450 bicycles); that repair store then has to earn enough money selling the repaired bikes to pay for the next shipment. “We see this as one way to continue to contribute,” says Kathy Williams Ging. “As a volunteer in Peru I saw firsthand what a big difference having a bicycle or sewing machine can make in someone’s life.” Bikes should be rust free. No trikes but bikes with flat tires in need of some repair are accepted.
Sewing machines is working condition are also accepted. Each person who donates also will be asked to donate $10 per bike (tax-deductible) to help defray the cost of shipping the bicycles. Directions to King Kullen Shopping Center: LIE to Exit 68 (William Floyd Parkway) Northbound to Route 25 (Middle Country Rd) Westbound; travel 2 miles to King Kullen Shopping Center on right. To learn more about Pedals for Progress, visit their web site at www. p4p.org. For information about the May 10th collection, call Bette Bass at 516.606.1400 or Kathy Williams-Ging at 631.549.4873. The program is also accepting cash donations from corporate and community sponsors.

Browsing The Archives By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Last week marked another mini-milestone in my time here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers, my 450th In Step column. I have to admit, I only realized this a few days ago while randomly perusing the archives, brainstorming for ideas, and I suppose it would stand to reason, seeing as I’m coming upon my 9th anniversary working here… but still, it seems like just yesterday that I tentatively submitted my first column for consideration, as a “trial run” of sorts. The rest, as they say, is history. Fast forward to the present day, as I’m in the process of
putting together a presentation for my alma mater, discussing the path I took to achieve my career aspirations, the ten years that have elapsed since being in the comfortable confines of a classroom, and all that has transpired along the way. Not that I saw it as such a clear-cut path at the time, but I suppose we rarely do when we’re in the midst of the daily madness of responsibilities and obligations and all that fun stuff. Ten years is a long time, and much has changed in the interim, to be sure; but just as much remains the same. It takes the benefit of perspective to take stock of where you’ve been, where you’re going and, perhaps most importantly,
where you’re at now. We tend to forget that part, so consumed are we by reminiscing over the good ole’ days and looking forward to the next stage. It’s funny, too, when you look back, to realize that so much is pre-planned for us while still in school, such is the structure of the academic world. But once you graduate, it’s a whole new spectrum of possibilities. It just takes some planning and preparation to maximize that potential and avoid becoming complacent. There’s no bell schedule to dictate our next move, no breakdown of semesters… just us, on our own, finding our way in the great beyond. Here’s to the next milestone!

The Town’s 2014 Children’s Magical Music & More performances for April will feature two events kicking off with story-teller Queen Nur at the Bethpage Public Library, located at 47 Powell Ave, Bethpage on Wednesday, April 16th. The performance will take place at 2 p.m. and is free to all Town residents, Town Councilman Anthony Macagnone announced. “The Town is delighted that its Children’s Magical Music & More program continues to provide free entertainment to families and children around the Town of Oyster Bay,” Councilman Macagnone stated. “The Town is more than happy to provide two more performances for families to enjoy in addition to the many upcoming free family events the Town has planned for 2014.”
C o u n c i l m a n Macagnone went on to state that along with Queen Nur, which offers an entertaining and interactive performance featuring original songs and dances, the Town will host an additional performance in April featuring Ernie Sites, an singing/songwriting Idaho cowboy who entertains families with traditional music of the American West. Families will be delighted by Ernie Sites’ personal brand of western humor and wit in a performance including lasso trick

SERVING ALL OF LONG ISLAND AND NEW YORK CITY EVERY DAY!
Spring has sprung, and there are many activities to enjoy now that the warmer weather has arrived. Many homeowners make the most of warmer weather by tackling projects around their properties. While autumn is a better time to overseed a lawn for new growth, satisfactory results still can be had if seeding is done early enough in the spring. Grass needs ample time to establish roots and grow strong before the summer heat takes its toll. Many types of grass
need six to 12 weeks of ideal temperatures and growing conditions to germinate and produce a sturdy grass that will grow and endure. Seeding can be done to rejuvenate an existing lawn and fill in bare spots. It also can be done to start a lawn from scratch. The following are some tips to help make seeding projects more successful. • Begin by raking the lawn to remove thatch and any fallen leaves leftover from autumn and winter. Raking also enables you to inspect

the lawn for bare patches or matting of grass that may be indicative of a fungus or other problem. • Dust off the mower and trim the lawn short, especially if it was left long at the end of last season. This will help seed penetrate the blades of grass and get to the soil beneath. • High-traffic lawns may need aeration to counteract compacted soil. Moss on the ground is often an indication of compaction. Aeration will help with this problem, as it pokes holes into the soil to enable oxygenation that keeps new grass robust and promotes faster growth. Lawn aerators can be rented from many garden centers. • Spread a mixture of topsoil and compost over the top of the lawn. This will add nutrients through organic matter to the lawn and create a good base for the new seed to take root. It will also help strengthen any existing grass and promote long-term health. • Test a sample of the soil to check the pH. Grass prefers a neutral pH, but some soil tends to lean toward the acidic side, especially if you see the presence of moss. Knowing the pH will help determine just how much lime per
Blimpie Anniversary Celebration said Steve Evans, VP of marketing for Blimpie. “So many of our customers grew up with Blimpie and now their children love us too. It’s a brand that serves an amazing product, which allows us to both be timeless and evolve and grow with our guests.” While April 4th will offer 50 cent regular-sized Blimpie Best subs to the first 200 customers that enter each store, the brand will be celebrating this milestone all year long. From May 5 through June 29, Blimpie will offer a contest that will send one lucky winner and a guest on a trip to the 50th state (Hawaii) along with other great prizes including free tablets, free subs for a year and $50 Blimpie gift cards. (See contest official rules.) Later in the year, Blimpie plans to launch the Hoboken Hoagie, a new sub that will be introduced to guests as a way to pay
homage to the birthplace of the Blimpie sub and brand. It’s a year of excitement and anticipation as stores celebrate 50 years of selling craveable subs and being America’s Sub Shop®. With the Blimpie Best being the brand’s best-selling sub and being made of slow-cured ham, prosciuttini, cappacola, salami and provolone and dressed The Blimpie Way with tomatoes, lettuce, onion, oil, vinegar and oregano all on a sub roll; April 4th will be a great day as customers join us in the stores for this fabulous sub and celebration.

square foot you will need to adjust it accordingly. Liming is a corrective measure and does not need to be used on a healthy, thriving lawn. • Invest in a spreader to add seed to the lawn. The spreader will have various settings that enable you to calibrate the rate of seed dispersion depending on your walking speed. Fill the spreader with seed and begin to walk around the lawn. Drop spreaders require you to apply seed in rows with no overlap. Broadcast spreaders will cast seed widely and may need some overlap to guarantee complete coverage. • Spread another thin layer of compost mix over the seed and water thoroughly. The compost will help keep moisture in while the seeds germinate. • Aim for lawn watering two to three times per day. The seed should be barely dry between watering. After seeds have germinated and established, you can reduce the frequency of watering but increase the depth of the watering to keep roots strong. • Avoid foot traffic on a newly seeded lawn until the grass is well established.

Walk/Run For Friends Of Karen The Walk/Run For Friends of Karen at The Long Island Marathon is an opportunity to help children diagnosed with cancer or another lifethreatening illness. The 5K Walk/Run will be held on Saturday, May 3rd, at the Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale. The 10K, Half & Full Marathon will take place on Sunday, May 4th, at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. Friends of Karen provides emotional, financial and advocacy support for
children with life threatening illnesses and their families in order to keep them stable, functioning and able to cope. The organization has helped more than 12,900 children in the New York tristate region. The Walk/Run for Friends of Karen was started in 2007 with 25 participants and spearheaded by Evelyn Anderson, a Friends of Karen parent who wanted to run a half marathon to honor her son, Luke, diagnosed with leukemia as a toddler and
now enjoying growing up with his loving family. Last year, more than 300 walkers and runners joined the team and more than $340,000 has been raised for the organization. Don’t pass up this wonderful opportunity to help Friends of Karen in their efforts to assist families who turn to them in their time of need. For more information, please call 631.473.1768, ext. 303 or visit www.friendsofkaren. org.
Rockin’ For Autism Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, held its annual Rockin’ For Autism Concert. Over 500 Long Islanders packed Mulcahy’s Pub and Music Hall in Wantagh to raise over $30,000 for DDI. “It is truly remarkable and heartwarming to see so many people come together to help those challenged with a disability,” stated Jim Cronin, Chairman of
the event and a member of the DDI Foundation Board. “This wonderful event is crucial in supporting the vital programs that DDI has to benefit Long Islanders with autism and other developmental disabilities.” For a $30.00 donation guests enjoyed the sounds of live music with an all-star lineup of legendary Long Island bands including 1 Step Ahead, The Cold Spring Harbor Band, 3, and Generations. Legendary
Saturday Night Live Band Leader GE Smith made a surprise appearance and performance. Gift baskets, raffles, food and live music were enjoyed by all into the late evening. “Every year this event lends itself to being a great day,” commented Event Music Director, Steve Alliano. “I want to give a special thanks to the talented musicians who donated their services and talents to make the day a true success.”

Fifty years ago, three high school friends in Hoboken, N.J., set out to create the greatest sub sandwich on the planet. They called it a Blimpie as they thought their newly created sub sandwich resembled a blimp. A half century later, that sub has become beloved by millions and the brand has grown to hundreds of locations around the globe. To celebrate Blimpie’s 50th birthday on April 4th, stores nationwide will be selling their regular-sized Blimpie Best® sub for just 50 cents that day to the first 200 customers in each location; the price point symbolizing 50 years of amazing subs. “We’re thrilled to celebrate our 50th birthday with America and want everyone to enjoy a 50 cent Blimpie Best sub as our thank you to our loyal customers who helped us grow this sub chain,”

When people think of outdoor storage, they generally envision garden sheds to house their lawn and garden equipment and tools. However, if space doesn’t allow for a large shed, there is no need to fret because there are other storage possibilities. Consider a garden ottoman or bench, for example. This structure
cushions or any other outdoor equipment. Utilizing the space under the deck is another idea. Cover the perimeter of the bottom of the deck with lattice and install one piece on a hinge to serve as a door. Store equipment underneath and out of sight. It also will be protected from the elements.

Pruning trees and shrubs is necessary to ensure they maintain their health and vigor. Trees and shrubs should be inspected annually to determine if they need to be pruned. Mature trees typically do not need to be pruned as frequently as young trees, which need pruning to establish branch structure. Trees and shrubs that go years without pruning can become overgrown and weak. In addition to promoting tree and shrub health, pruning pays a host of other dividends. • Pruning removes dead or diseased branches. Pruning helps a tree or shrub maintain its shape and vigor by removing broken, dead or diseased branches that can be unsightly and make it more difficult for the tree or shrub to stay healthy. When broken, dead or diseased branches are removed, trees or shrubs look healthier and add aesthetic appeal to a

Counting Down To “Ivy Day” Decisions
For months, I have been anxiously awaiting March 27th. This Thursday, known as “Ivy Day,” has historically been when top tier colleges release their admissions decisions. As I am writing this, I am hours away from Ivy Day. Serving as the culmination of years of hard work, the final word from these prestigious institutions has been long awaited. If even one of the colleges that I have applied to admits me, I will have succeeded in my goal. An acceptance would serve as positive affirmation that my hard work has not gone unnoticed. However, in the likely event that I am
inundated with rejections, I know that everything will work out the way that it is meant to. I am a firm believer in God’s plan. After months of thinking, I have finally justified the idea that I do not need an Ivy League education to be successful. Not everyone who attends a great school is happy in life. Education is just an ingredient in the recipe for success. Hard work and motivation also play major roles. If everything works out the way I hope, I will be accepted. With that being said, a rejection is not condemnation. At this point, I know that I will end up where I need to
be. Everything is out of my hands, and I can only hope that the admissions officers have chosen to admit me. My father once instilled in me a great mantra. He preached the idea that, “If you can handle it, don’t worry about it; and if you can’t handle it, don’t worry about it.” I know that there is nothing I can do this late in the game to sway a decision. There is no sense in fretting. I can only hope. As I count down the minutes until Ivy Day, I will try not to think about the impending, life altering decision. Next week, I hope to share good news with you all!
Tyler Cianciulli of Islip is a Senior at St. John the Baptist High School. Please feel free to share your feedback with him at: tylercianciulli@gmail.com
property. • Pruning trees and shrubs promotes growth of other plants. Trees and shrubs that go years without being pruned become overgrown, making it difficult for plants underneath or adjacent to them to grow in healthy. For example, grass beneath an overgrown tree might not get adequate sunlight, which it needs to establish strong roots so it can grow in lush and healthy. Pruning allows plants beneath the tree and shrub and even those next to the tree and shrub to grow in nicely. • Pruning can sometimes bring plants back to life. Shrubs that have gone years without being pruned can sometimes still be salvaged. In some instances, pruning such shrubs can restore natural and healthy growth. • Pruning reduces risk of accidents. Overgrown trees can interfere with power lines, increasing the risk of accidents and power outages. In addition, overgrown trees tend to have larger, weaker limbs, which can prove hazardous and cause property damage during storms. Pruning overgrown trees reduces the risk of such accidents. • Pruning can save money. Over time, overgrown trees might require professional assistance in order to be removed or pruned from a property. Homeowners who prune their trees as needed can save themselves the cost of a potentially pricey tree service. • Pruning adds curb appeal. A property littered with overgrown trees and shrubs hurts a home’s curb appeal, giving prospective buyers the impression that homeowners might have been careless with regard to maintaining the whole house and not just the lawn. But trees and shrubs that are pruned and well-maintained can add to a home’s curb appeal, something that goes a long way toward impressing prospective buyers.

Celebrating The Seasons The Celebrations In Art club at Village Elementary is wrapping up after a half year of fun. Together, students set the scene for a festive Thanksgiving feast by creating colorful decorations that were enjoyed by all at the school’s annual Thanksgiving lunch. Next, the budding artists created fall-themed artwork on paper bags. In conjunction with Stop &
Shop in Woodbury, these artful bags were then filled with food donations and given to families in need for Thanksgiving. Lastly, the children created a mixed media collage with the theme of “Peace On Earth” for International Night. Their projects were featured in a collaborative display with other artworks that were created with Mrs. O’Connell and Mrs.
LaTouche. Their beautiful creations are still on display in the lobby of the school. The students spent their final sessions creating a vase with flowers for a special Valentine’s Day gift. Congratulations on a great half-year, art club, and special thanks to moderator Ms. Kane for sharing her creativity with the club members!
DOGABILITY - On Thursday, March 20th, Dogability (dogabilityli.org) taught the students at HANC Plainview about service dogs, therapy dogs, and guide dogs. The students took turns training the dogs, playing with them and interacting with them. The 4th grade students had just completed a unit about service dogs in their English Language Arts curriculum. The dogs - and students - had a blast!

MAKING TIMELINES OF LIFE - To coincide with their unit on families, first grade students at Village Elementary recently created colorful timelines of their young lives. Each child brought in a special adult to assist them. There were moms, dads, grandparents, uncles and siblings to help the children glue pictures and write captions describing such special moments as the first day of kindergarten, first visit from the Tooth Fairy, first dance recital and so much more. It was an activity that everyone enjoyed. Thanks to first grade teachers Ms. Fenster, Ms. Kaplan and Ms. Zinnanti for putting together such a fun project.
Spring Festival Oyster Bay Town Councilman Chris Coschignano invites residents and their families to come and celebrate springtime at the Town of Oyster Bay’s FREE Spring Festival. Just as last year’s festival, this event has been expanded to two parks to make it more convenient for residents
to join in the fun. The Spring Festival will be held on Saturday, April 12th, at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, 7800 Jericho Tpke., Woodbury, and on Saturday, April 26th, at Marjorie R. Post Community Park, Unqua and Merrick Roads, Massapequa, from 1 to 4 p.m. Both events are rain or shine.
This event is being sponsored by the Town of Oyster Bay’s Department of Community & Youth Services, Cultural and Performing Arts Division (CAPA). For more information, call CAPA at 516.797.7925 or visit the Town’s website, www.oysterbaytown.com.
Is it science or is it magic? That was the question on everyone’s mind during a recent assembly at Village Elementary School. In his wildly entertaining and informative presentation, the brilliant Mr. Fish showed students that science really is magic! Mr. Fish used an array of everyday objects to demonstrate all kinds of
science concepts. Students watched in amazement as he successfully pulled a tablecloth out from under a stack of dishes and glasses to showcase velocity, friction, and inertia. Volunteers cracked a whip to create a sonic boom and learned a lesson in aerodynamics as Mr. Fish used a pizza box to fashion and then throw a
boomerang. The budding scientists even discovered how to stick a needle through a balloon without popping it! Special thanks to the Arts In Education chairpersons, Debra Ceglia and Evelyn O’Donnell, for putting together such a spectacular event.
We all know our lifestyle has gotten far too sedentary – maybe never more so than in a winter that doesn’t seem to want to loosen its stranglehold on the Northeast. But spring will come, and the American Heart Association is urging everyone to take steps for their health, regardless of the temperature. Wednesday, April 2nd, is National Walking Day, and the American Heart Association is urging everyone to push back from their desks, stand up from their chairs, lace up their sneakers, and go for a 30-minute walk. And, since it’s the 21st century, post photos on your social media sites with the hashtag #AHALaceup. “I’ll be putting on my sneakers with red laces on April 2nd, and heading out for a walk,” said Long Island Board member Dr. Jean Cacciabaudo, Chief of Cardiology at Southside Hospital. “Thirty minutes
of activity will get your blood circulating and clear your brain. Physical activity can also reduce your blood pressure, one of the leading risk factors for a heart attack or stroke.” High blood pressure is often called the silent killer, because people can have it and not have any symptoms. Untreated high blood pressure can damage the heart and coronary arteries, leading to heart attack, heart failure, stroke, vision loss, and peripheral artery disease, among other things. Blood pressure above 140/90 counts as high blood pressure. “You can’t control some things, like genetics,” Cacciabaudo said. “But everyone should have an annual checkup and know what their blood pressure is, then make a plan with their doctor to treat it. And of course, eating healthy food and exercising every day will help your overall

health, including your blood pressure. Having good blood pressure will also help you manage your weight and manage your stress level. I think this long winter is stressing all of us out, so participating in National Walking Day is a great way to combat that.” You can sign up to participate in National Walking Day at heart.org/ NationalWalkingDay.
Peaches In addition to being delicious, peaches are filled with vitamins A and C, which can help protect your immune system. Studies show that canned peaches actually have more folate and beta-carotene than fresh. Plus, there’s no mess. Remember, August is National Peaches Month. Flowers with Purpose Many flowers compete with one another to attract butterflies, birds and bees for pollination, but at least two species of flowering plants have enhanced their ability to
attract insects in unique ways. The titan arum (Amorphophallus titanium) is native to western Sumatra, where it grows in openings
in rainforests. It is the largest unbranched flower in the world and can reach up to 15 feet tall. But this alone is not what makes the titan arum so special.
It is unwise to step in close to get a whiff of this enormous bloom, as the plant gives off a rancid odor reminiscent of rotting meat. It is sometimes known as the
carrion plant or the corpse plant for this reason. The plant has created this scent to attract flies for pollination. The rafflesia, which is native to southeastern
Asia as well, is another plant that produces a rotting aroma to attract insects. The rafflesia has no stems, leaves or true roots - it’s basically one large flower.

Helping Your Garden Grow As winter slowly winds down, many gardeners cannot wait to soak up the springtime sun and get their hands dirty in the garden. Such excitement is not just good for gardeners, but can benefit the garden in the months to come as well. Late winter or early spring is a great time to get a head start on the gardening season. Even if gardening season is still around the corner, completing the following projects can ensure your garden gets off on the right foot. Clear Debris One of the best things you can do for your garden as winter winds down is to clear it of debris. Winter can be especially harsh on a landscape, and gardens left to the elements are often filled with debris once spring arrives. Dead leaves, fallen branches, rocks that surfaced during the winter frost, and even garbage that might have blown about in winter winds can all pile up in a garden over a typical winter. Clearing such debris likely won’t take long, but it’s a great first step toward restoring the garden before the time comes to plant and grow the garden once again. Examine The Soil Soil plays a significant
role in whether a garden thrives or struggles. Examining the soil before the season starts can help gardeners address any issues before they plant. Ignoring the soil until a problem arises can turn the upcoming gardening season into a lost opportunity, so test the soil to determine if it has any nutrient or mineral deficiencies. This may require the help of a professional, but if a problem arises, you might be able to adjust the acidity or alkalinity of the soil and still enjoy a successful gardening season. Another way to examine the soil is less complex but can shed light on when would be a good time to get back to work. Reach into the soil and dig out a handful. If the soil quickly crumbles, you can start preparing for gardening seasoning. But if the soil is still clumped together, it needs more time to dry out before you can begin your prep work. Initiate Edging Edging is another task gardeners can begin as they get ready for the season. Edge plant and flower beds, but be sure to use a spade with a flat blade or an edger designed to edge flower beds. Such tools will cut deep enough
so grass roots that may eventually grow into the flower bed are severed. Depending on how large a garden is, edging can be a time-consuming task, so getting a head start allows homeowners to spend more time planting and tending to their gardens once the season hits full swing. Fight Weeds Though weeds likely have not survived the winter, that does not mean they won’t return once the weather starts to heat up. But as inevitable as weeds may seem, homeowners can take steps to prevent them from turning beautiful gardens into battlegrounds where plants, flowers and vegetables are pitted against unsightly and potentially harmful weeds. Spring is a good time to apply a pre-emergent weed preventer, which can stop weeds before they grow. Though such solutions are not always foolproof, they can drastically reduce the likelihood of weed growth. Though gardeners might not be able to start planting their gardens in late winter or early spring, they can still get outside and take steps to ensure their gardens thrive once planting season begins.
Repair Your Dead Grass A patch of dead grass on an otherwise lush lawn can be a frustrating eyesore for homeowners. Whether lawn care is your passion or just something you do to maintain the value of your home, dead grass can be exasperating. But as unsightly as dead grass can be, addressing it and restoring the dead patches can be somewhat simple. Before you can restore grass, however, you must first identify the source of the problem. Grass often dies because of urine damage, which is typically characterized by a dead spot surrounded by otherwise green grass. Grub infestation might be at fault when dead grass appears, and such an infestation often produces patches of light brown grass that are scattered throughout the lawn. It’s also possible that dead grass is a result of human error. If your lawn was overfertilized, then patches of gray-green grass may appear. Fungal disease is another common culprit behind dead grass, and such disease can manifest itself in different ways. Once you have identified why the grass is dead, which may require the help of a professional, then you can begin to treat your lawn. Urine Damage
Urine damage is often limited to a particular area of the grass where your family pet routinely relieves itself. Once a particular patch of grass has worn down, the pet may move on to another spot. But if you quickly notice a dead spot due to urine damage, you can train the animal to urinate elsewhere, limiting the damage it causes. When repairing the grass, dig a hole that’s roughly four inches deep and fill it with fresh soil until it’s level with the soil surrounding the dead patch. Then you can sprinkle seed on top of the freshly laid soil and water the spot.Grass should grow in and stay green so long as you prevent further urine damage. Insect Damage Addressing dead spots caused by insect damage can be a little more complicated, and some homeowners may prefer to hire a professional. If you want to handle the problem on your own, apply pesticide to the affected areas so the insects behind the problem are killed. Once the insects are no more, cut the grass, raking the affected area to remove the dead grass and any additional debris. Scatter grass seed over the affected areas and then apply an appropriate fertilizer
and water immediately. Professionals may know just the right fertilizer for your lawn, so even if you want to go it alone, visit a local lawn care center to ask for advice about addressing your particular problem. Fertilizer Damage Fertilizer damage can also prove difficult to address, as applying fresh seeds too soon can kill any freshly growing seedlings. So grass that has been damaged by overfertilization must first be allowed to fully die. Once that has happened, the grass can be cut and any remaining debris or dead grass can be removed. Seed can then be scattered, and you can even add some additional soil before laying down an appropriate amount of fertilizer and watering the lawn immediately. If you don’t trust yourself to use fertilizer correctly, then hire a professional to do the job for you. This will cost a little more, but you likely won’t wake up to more dead patches of grass down the road. Dead grass can be unsightly and turn an otherwise lush lawn into a patchy eyesore. But addressing dead grass can be easy and can quickly restore a lawn to its green grandeur.
Benefits Of Hiring A Landscaper The desire to have a pristine, well-manicured landscape leads many homeowners to toil outdoors for hours every weekend. Hiring a professional landscaper can free up homeowners’ time and help them ensure their yards are cared for properly. One of the benefits of hiring a landscaper is the time savings. Landscapers typically have commercial-grade equipment that can dramatically reduce the time it takes to mow and perform other
maintenance tasks around your property. Furthermore, some services have multiple employees working concurrently, enabling them to tackle several projects at the same time and complete them in a fraction of the time it would take a homeowner working on his or her own. Landscapers familiar with botany and landscape design understand how to properly care for plants and trees on your property, while novice green thumbers may be
unaware about when to prune trees and shrubs, at what height to cut the lawn and which plants will thrive in particular locations. Such do-ityourself maintenance may even cost more money than leaving it to a professional. Hiring a professional landscaper is, in many instances, more economical. For a certain weekly or monthly fee, homeowners receive the benefit of professional knowledge and execution. Also, homeowners will not have the expense of
purchasing the various tools and equipment necessary for lawn and garden maintenance, tools and equipment that include lawnmowers, string weeders, edgers, fertilizer, grass seed, leaf blowers, and shovels. Another benefit is the lawn will continue to be mowed whether a homeowner is home or not. During the spring and summer vacation season, it’s easy for homeowners to overlook their lawn and garden in favor of recreation and leisure activities.
Without proper watering and maintenance, lawns and gardens can brown or overgrowth can occur. But hiring a landscaping service allows homeowners to rest assured that their yards will be maintained whether they’re home or not. Hiring a local landscaping service will not only benefit homeowners, but also it will benefit the local economy. Residents can feel comfortable knowing their lawn service will be available
for calls when needed and will be familiar with the community. Also, local contractors may go the extra mile to earn your business recommendation. Hiring a landscaping service can be advantageous to homeowners who want to free up time and still enjoy a well-maintained landscape. Super Cable A single fiber-optic cable can carry as many as 4,000 telephone conversations as well as several television signals.
