Hicksville HS Student Selected For Government Conference
Congratulations to Omika Samlall, a student at Hicksville High School, who has been chosen to participate in the 20th annual Students Inside Albany government educational conference on May 17-20, sponsored by the League of Women Voters. Omika will represent the East Nassau chapter of the League of Women Voters. Omika will participate in a hands-on learning experience about how state government works. She
will meet and work with high school students from across the state to learn about New York State government and the process by which citizens can participate in the policy-making arena. As part of this program, Omika and other students will tour the New York State Capitol and observe both the Senate and Assembly in action by spending an afternoon shadowing their respective legislator. The League of Women Voters East Nassau chapter
is sponsoring Omika’s trip. League of Women Voters representatives Donna Buthmann, Mary Gould and Dania Smith selected Omika after interviewing her in January. T h e goal of the Students Inside Albany government educational conference is to inspire Omika and other students to become more aware of citizens’ responsibility in representative government.

March 25, 2020 Dear Editor: I want to address those on the front lines during these uncertain times. People around the world are watching to see - Can the people of New York handle this crisis successfully? The answer is YES WE CAN, YES WE WILL! Each day all of you are protecting
our community. That is something to be extraordinarily proud of. Look to the people you are working with each day to do special things and say to them “We are a team and we are together on this”! “You are the heroes of healthcare”! Continue to have confidence and pride in what you do every day, our community is thankful! On Long Island and in the Greater NY City region we
have the best people -You are the best people! We are made for this challenge! What is our continued focus? To provide the best possible care we can for everybody! We will stay safe using our proper Personal Preventive Equipment (PPE) guidelines and techniques. Our health care workers are on the front lines of this pandemic, and the American Heart
Association (AHA) is working with them to implement training aids and resources they anticipate needing. For example: in response to an anticipated possible future shortage of trained ICU personnel utilizing ventilators, the AHA will soon be launching a new course for Oxygenation & Ventilation of the COVID-19 patient (which will be available to health care providers worldwide
by March 31). In conclusion to the initial question posed today, remember: The answer is - YES WE CAN, YES WE WILL! Thanks to ALL of the Heroes of Healthcare!

Students at PlainviewOld Bethpage Middle School (POBMS) in the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District are hungry for literature! POBMS hosted its first ever Literacy Cafe for students. The weeklong event, which took place during the week of January 27-January 31, was created with the mission of encouraging 5th and 6th graders to explore new books through genres, styles and authors.
The zSpace Lab located in POBMS was decorated as a café including details such as place settings and menus. Each table was organized by book genre. After reading a few pages of each book, students were asked to write down their thoughts. “The goal of the Literacy Café was for students at Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School to gain the experience of branching out and discovering new
