he Nursery, Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten classes at Holy Family School recently worked in cooperative learning groups to create a rainbow mural with handprints. Classes were assigned one of the six colors and, on the day they presented their mural, students, teachers and teacher assistants in the individual classes dressed in their class color. The Italian Society at Bethpage High School hosted its 43rd annual Italian Feast for all students taking Italian as their foreign language. In traditional style, the event featured delicious homemade dishes prepared by the hands of Bethpage Italian language students, staff, PTA volunteers,

READING CELEBRATION - Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Rebecca M. Alesia recently visited Ms. Levien’s second grade class at Walt Whitman School in Woodbury to celebrate the Walt Whitman Parents As Reading Partners (PARP) Mardi Gras Community Reading Celebration. The PARP Reading Program helps teach young minds that reading inside and outside the classroom will go a long way in helping them succeed in their education. Councilwoman Alesia read to Ms. Levien’s 2nd grade class to show students that reading from your favorite book is a wonderful experience both as a child and as an adult.

SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD - Michael Stanco was recently honored with the Edward Kata Sportsmanship Award. Councilman Chris Coschignano presented a Citation to Michael in recognition of his service as a coach at St. Edward the Confessor’s Church CYO for over 20 years, where he instilled important life lessons about dedication, sportsmanship and perseverance in all of his players. CITATION PRESENTED - The Eagle Scout Court of Honor Ceremony for Tully Francis Frain of Boy Scout Troop 205 in Syosset was recently held at St. Edward the Confessor Church. Councilwoman Rebecca Alesia and Receiver of Taxes James Stefanich presented Tully with a Citation in honor of the community service he dedicated himself to in order to earn the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout.

One morning in March, all 389 students in Holy Family School gathered in the Auditorium to watch their teachers, teaching assistants and principal perform for them. The adults decided to act out some Dr. Seuss books for the students. Books that were chosen to be part of the performance had a worthwhile moral to them.

Six students from Plainview-Old Bethpage (POB) School District’s John F. Kennedy High School recently participated in the 30th Annual Italian Poetry contest held at SUNY Old Westbury. Students were required to recite a 12-line poem in Italian completely from memorization in order to compete. In the first level of

It was amazing to see the Nursery through Grade 8 students as they realized and discussed the values and concepts after they enjoyed the performance. In one of the stories: The Sneetches,

GUEST READER - Town of Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes James J. Stefanich recently visited Ms. Geschwind’s second grade class at Walt Whitman School in Woodbury. During his visit, Receiver of Taxes Stefanich read out loud from the book Jumanji to Ms. Geschwind’s class, as part of the Parents As Reading Partners (PARP) Reading Program. The PARP Reading Program encourages children to read at home in order to be better prepared and succeed in school.

More than 100 students and their families at Old Country Road Elementary School in the Hicksville Public School District learned about life during the American Civil War during the third annual History Night. The program featured

hands-on workshops, which included creating artificial oysters, playing mancala games and dominoes, and cracking codes using a cipher wheel. Parents, who were trained by teachers on how to facilitate the workshops, taught students and their

Looking For Lifeguards Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto announced that the Town is currently seeking individuals who are certified to work as lifeguards for the 2015 summer season. “Anyone who is qualified to serve as a lifeguard has the ideal opportunity for employment with the Town of Oyster Bay,” said Supervisor Venditto. “There is certainly a sense of pride that goes along with the position, and our lifeguards have the added bonus of working at the town’s beautiful beaches or pools.” Supervisor Venditto did, however, point out that

with this great position comes great responsibility. “It is a role that is meant for those who are experienced swimmers and fully certified,” Supervisor Venditto said. “All of our lifeguards need to be highly responsible, motivated and up for the challenge of protecting the lives and safety of swimmers and beach attendees.” Supervisor Venditto noted that any interested applicants must possess a current Nassau County Department of Health Lifeguard Certification Card and a current CPR/ AED Certification Card. Qualified applicants may apply in person

at the Town of Oyster Bay Parks Department Human Resources Office, located in Town Hall South (977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa). RAINBOW OF LEARNING - The Nursery, Pre-K and Kindergarten Classes at Holy Family School worked in cooperative learning groups to create a rainbow mural with handprints. The Long Island Pet Expo that was held from March 6th through March 8th at the Suffolk Community College in Brentwood, had a record-breaking number of attendees and pets adopted this year. The 6th annual event had well over 14,000 attendees in the 2.5-day expo. Over 70 pets adopted, the most at any of their shows in the tri-state, from local rescue groups that were at the expo. Over 600 owned dogs came with their owners to enjoy the pet friendly event over the weekend. “We were very pleased with the number of adoptions at the expo, especially learning that a few senior dogs were adopted including a 10year old dog. That makes me very happy!” said Karen Garetano co-owner of Family Pet Shows who host

the show. “Even though we have been hosting pet shows for 25 years, this 6th show at Suffolk Community College in Brentwood was a great show for us. People came from all over the island and from Queens, New York City and Brooklyn. It was wonderful to have so many dog owners bring their dogs with them to enjoy the show too. Our vendors were very happy with the turnout and there were a lot of smiling faces, from the children to the adults and even their pets who attended.” Next year’s show is scheduled for Friday through Sunday: March 4th, 5th and 6th, 2016. The Plainview-Old Bethpage (POB) School District’s H. B. Mattlin Middle School Math Olympiad team, coached by teacher Sherri Winick, recently participated in the 6th Annual Nassau County Math Olympiad Tournament at Kellenberg High School.

POB competed against 30 participating seventh and eighth grade teams from 25 different Long Island districts. There were three different events at the tournament: one individual event, one team event and the “Mix It Up” event. “Mix It Up” consisted of

students from different schools who worked together to solve math problems. The H.B. Mattlin Middle School team placed fifth in the team event, and student Joshua Martin placed first as a member of his “Mix It Up’ team.
