The Town of Oyster Bay, in an effort to further provide residents with more open and accessible government, has begun streaming Town Board meetings live on the internet. “With the new year upon us, my colleagues and I on the Town Board have made it a priority to provide residents with a Town government that is both more open and more accessible to them, beginning with making Town Board minutes and resolutions available online,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Streaming Town Board meetings online will offer residents who can’t make it to scheduled Town Board meetings an avenue through which they can remain active and engaged in the workings of their local government.” Residents will be able to find the live stream located prominently on the Town’s website, www. oysterbaytown.com. Over the weekend, Venturing Crew 130 visited the Sterling Hill Mining Museum in Ogdensburg, NJ. Ninety one of the minerals found in this mine fluoresce. So, throughout the tour, black light was shown on the rocks to show how the minerals there glow. Each Venturer was given
a sample to take home. They also took advantage of some local geocaching along the way. The Crew camped in a cabin at Camp Winnebago in nearby Rockaway, NJ. They also took a morning 2-1/2 mile hike around the camp’s Durham Pond. Who would have thought that something so cool was so close to home?

Anyone who loves Tobay Beach and is interested in protecting and enhancing the beach’s environment can join with fellow volunteers and Town officials at the Annual Tobay Beach Dune Stabilization Project, scheduled for Saturday, April 2nd, at 10:00 a.m. according to Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto. “Since 1989, the Dune Stabilization Project
Syosset High School students with an interest in the culinary arts had the chance to show their skills during the school’s Compete to Eat competition, where four student-led “restaurants” each served a small appetizer and entrée to community members to see who could form the best eatery. A panel of celebrity chefs adjudicated the event. The four restaurants were critiqued based on décor, service, taste, presentation and efficiency,
with “Molto Buono” ultimately taking the top honors. Each patron diner donated $10, with all of the proceeds going to the Mary Brennan INN food pantry and clothing boutique. Special thanks to the celebrity judges who lent their expertise to making Compete to Eat a fun and informative evening for the young Syosset restaurateurs. They are Barret Beyer (“Hell’s Kitchen,” Season XI), Floyd Cardoz (“Top Chef Master,” Season III), Vincenzo DeGuglielmi
(Star Academy Culinary Arts School), Mick Gehnric (Culinary Academy of Long Island), Christopher Lee (James Beard Award, “Top Chef”) and Leonard Messina (Culinary Academy of Long Island). Syosset High School teacher Dave Anderson coordinated the event through the Peers Reaching Out program, with several teachers volunteering their time to the event. More than $1,000 was raised.
Astronomy Lesson Plainview-Old Bethpage School District’s H.B. Mattlin Middle School students recently participated in their annual Nassau BOCES Starlab experience. The program, led by Nassau BOCES naturalists,
taught sixth grade students about astronomy and its relationship with Greek mythology reinforcing class sessions on the subject. The Starlab is inflated and transformed into a 16-foot dome, set up inside the school for two

Author and illustrator Daniel Kirk recently visited Charles Campagne Elementary School in the Bethpage School District. Prior to his visit, students shared his books in library with Ms. Ivers and created artwork with Mrs. Hermann. The projects included the creation of books, book
jackets and pictures, which were used to decorate the halls throughout the school. Daniel Kirk spoke about being an author and illustrator and gave insight about the editing process and shared ideas to become better authors and/or illustrators. For the various grade levels, he drew some of his

Do you know that math is very integral to the Japanese Art of Origami? These were just some questions answered by over 30 exhibits on display during the Math Madness event held in Holy Trinity High School’s library on March 15th.
Students in the 7th grade from Holy Family Elementary School in Hicksville, Our Lady of Mercy in Hicksville, St. Edward the Confessor in Syosset, Maria Regina in Seaford and St. Thomas the Apostle in West Hempstead, were invited to take a trip to Holy Trinity during their school day to learn many unique and interesting math facts from high school students. After school, the students at Holy Trinity were able to see what their fellow classmates have been up
to. Holy Trinity High School is a private, co-educational Catholic high school founded in 1966 drawing students from Nassau, Suffolk and Queens counties. Books Come Alive Students at Fork Lane Elementary School in the Hicksville Public School District were treated to a variety of performances by their teachers and parents during Books Alive 2016. The annual event is comprised of staff
members and parents reenacting some of the students’ favorite books in a play format. This year, performances included “Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type,” “Miss Nelson is Missing!” “Jack and the Beanstalk,”
and “The Little Red Hen (Makes a Pizza).” The event served as a fun and educational way to reinforce the joy and importance of reading at Fork Lane.
Jell-Loads of Fun English as a New Language (ENL) students and their parents at Old Country Road Elementary School in the Hicksville Public School District participated in a multifaceted “Shark Attack” literacy workshop. The program was developed by the school’s English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher Lucia Vieco, and was presented collaboratively with all ENL teachers at Old Country. The
teachers first led a reading of the nonfiction book “Tiburones: Sharks” by Carol Lindeen, and spoke about the best ways for parents to pull out tier-3 vocabulary for students. This particular skill, the teachers explained, is vital for state tests and to develop college readiness skills. Following the reading, students and parents worked together to follow a recipe and create an edible “Jell-O ocean” filled with
fish and sharks (gummy candies). They then provided feedback on the workshop using a recipe review page. The “Shark Attack” literacy workshop was presented bilingually with Spanish verbal and text translations. It served to bring ENL students and parents together for a fun and educational lesson in reading, vocabulary, collaboration and application of skills.

Syosset Speller Rika Mizoguchi, an eighth-grader at H.B. Thompson Middle School in Syosset, is heading to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., this May. Rika outlasted 125 contestants representing schools from Nassau and Suffolk counties, including 35 finalists, to win the Long Island Regional Spelling Bee at Hofstra University on March 13th. “The H.B. Thompson Middle School family congratulates Rika on this very impressive
accomplishment,” said H.B. Thompson Principal James Kassebaum. “Rika emerged as our school champion to qualify for the regionals, and we are proud to have her represent Syosset and serve as an ambassador for Long Island on the national stage in Washington. She is a hardworking and humble student, and we wish her well in her quest to become a national champion speller.” In the 17th round of the regional bee, Rika correctly
spelled the word “adnate,” which Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines as “grown to a usually unlike part, especially along a margin.” Rika is pictured displaying a Newsday article written about her victory while being congratulated by Kassebaum and her ELA teacher Anne O’Toole. Piece of the Pi Students and staff at Lee Avenue Elementary School in the Hicksville Public School District celebrated Pi Day on March 14th with fun and educational activities related to the mathematical constant. Principal Stephanie
Stam taught students about the origin and meaning of Pi before performing a magic trick in which she asked a student to pick a card and revealed it inside a pie. Four students then participated in a pie-eating contest to determine who
could eat the most amount in one minute. Madilynn Winters was determined the winner, and Ethan Caceres was the runner-up. Pi Day at Lee reinforced the significance of 3.14 as an important number in mathematics.

One of the themes of the evening was that preparation for school hinges as much on social and emotional skills as it does on academic skills. “Each child has to learn how to enjoy language, how to count, how to put letters together and how to manage oneself through social and emotional development,” Dr. Manley said. “For most children, it means learning how to share, such as toys and food.” “So often, we talk about
academic skills, and those are so very important,” Dr. Bonuso said. “But the readiness skills — the ability to share, the ability to play well with others and the ability to sometimes be independent — fostering [students’] enthusiasm for learning, even begin their formal education would be wonderful.” The third Supe’s On event of the year offered district residents an opportunity to engage in candid conversation with Dr. Bonuso as well as emphasize the love of learning that can be developed prior to entering pre-kindergarten in Hicksville schools. Kramer Lane Elementary School in the Bethpage Union Free School District is honoring Earth Day by using bottle caps to create a mural for its main hallway. All students in kindergarten through fifth grade took part in the
schoolwide effort, which was coordinated by art teacher Nancy Noskewicz with the assistance of guest artist Leslie Sattler from Nassau BOCES. The pair created a large layout based on an anti-bullying theme and then guided the students in painting

Town of Oyster Bay seniors are invited to take part in computer classes that will be held this April at the William P. Bennett Hicksville Community Center, located at 28 West Carl Street in Hicksville. The classes are held by the Education and Assistance Corp (EAC) Inc. to seniors 60 years of age and older through its SeniorNet program and begin on Tuesday, April 5th. CITATION PRESENTED - The Bethpage Fire Department’s Annual Installation Dinner was held at the Huntington Hilton in Melville. Councilman Anthony Macagnone is pictured presenting a citation to Outgoing Chief of the Bethpage Fire Department Richard J. Resto in recognition of his years of active service to the fire department and to the community which has led to his ascension to the prestigious rank of Chief. Also on hand for the event: Nassau County Legislator Laura Schaefer and Nassau County Legislator Rose Walker who joined Councilman Macagnone in recognizing Ex-Chief Resto and the other members of the Bethpage Fire Department for their service.
Roaring Ovation The Hicksville Middle School Drama Club presented its remarkable rendition of “The Lion King Jr.” to district staff members, students and community residents. Directed and choreographed by teacher Thomas DePalo, the
students performed the Disney classic and songs popularized by the film, including “Circle of Life” and “Hakuna Matata.” The play served as a forum for students - including Maya Persaud as Rafiki, John Warren as Mufasa, Shayla Kaim as Sarabi, Jason
Labrador as Zazu, Steven Goubran as Young Simba and Kayla Clark as Young Nala - to showcase their theatrical and choral skills. The roars of applause were a testament to the stellar talents of students at Hicksville Middle School.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I want to begin by expressing my sincere appreciation to all those readers who took the time to reach out in the last week to express condolences on the passing of my “Pal,” to relate to the sense of loss, to the closeness felt… but, mostly, to comment on how fortunate I was to share such a special bond with my grandfather and develop so many wonderful memories through the years. It is with that sentiment that I choose to pick up this week’s column. Rather than dwell in the sadness, I choose to reflect with a smile – on the love, the laughter, the photo albums, the video footage, the small possessions that embody much larger stories –
all the components that make pile of “unattributed” wisdom up a life well-lived. we all love to call upon from time to time. No matter the Family is precious. We source, the message is clear. know this, of course; but And so, we smile. We reflect. I think we tend to forget just how meaningful those We shed a happy tear here and connections are from time to there. But, most importantly, time. Only when called upon we remember. The standout citizen was honored for her service and role in creating CH3,

Manjrekar also continues to distribute backpacks filled with supplies to underprivileged children, organize holiday parties and also distribute gifts to children in need on Christmas. The Bethpage High School girls bowling team won the county championship for the second year in a row and qualified for the New York State Championship.
The team did a great job, finishing eighth in the state. Carly Leicht bowled the highest game of the tournament with a 279, while Samantha Ng bowled the tournament’s third
highest game with a 256. In the first year of cheerleading being recognized as an official sport in New York State, the Bethpage team won the first-ever Nassau

Hicksville High School art department coordinator and art teacher Beth Atkinson has been named a Distinguished Teacher of 2016 by the Harvard Club of Long Island. Atkinson is one of just 14 teachers across Long Island’s 150 public school districts and private schools to earn the prestigious distinction. Atkinson, who is the first teacher from Hicksville to receive the award, has taught at Hicksville High School for the past 30 years, and currently teaches Advanced Placement Visual Arts, Drawing and Portfolio Presentation. She also serves as coordinator of the art department at the high school and Hicksville Public School District’s seven elementary schools. In the past, Atkinson has taught studio art, jewelry, creative crafts, photography, ceramics, sculpture and painting. She has also served as a director of student activities and as an adviser to the sophomore class, junior class and National Art Honor Society. She was nominated for the distinction by Harvard College junior
Melissa Hammer, a former graduate of Hicksville High School. Hammer described Atkinson as a “great teacher” whose lessons “last a lifetime.” “Ms. Atkinson’s classes were the ones that best prepared me for work in college,” Hammer said. “[Learning] to make art purposefully, with intentional decisions relating to the materials used, methods and subject matter — and to take unique creative risks — now help me craft arguments for papers and make interesting research topics at Harvard.” “Ms. Atkinson is a remarkable teacher [who] inspires and challenges students both inside and outside the classroom,” said Hicksville Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carl Bonuso. “Her professionalism and dedication to the profession of teaching has made her an inspiration to her students and colleagues. We are so proud of all our teachers and staff whose dedication to the children they sere is truly to be applauded.” Atkinson holds a bachelor’s degree from SUNY Purchase, a master’s
degree from Queens College, many graduate credits from Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Long Island University (C.W. Post) and the Moore College of Art and Design. Throughout her career, she has amassed several distinctions, including NYSATA Nassau County Art Educator of the Year in 2008, NYS Art Educator of the Year in 2009, Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction in 2007, and Paul Vetrano Teacher of the Year in 2003. Atkinson is a permanent member of the Firefly Art Gallery in Northport. Atkinson lives in Northport with her husband, Brian, with whom she has three children: Katie, who teaches art in Maryland; Lauren, who attends Towson University; and Alex, who plans to major in photography when he attends college. She will be honored at the Harvard Club of Long Island’s annual University Relations Luncheon on April 10th.
