Life, as we know it, doesn’t always go according to plan. Sometimes, the most carefully orchestrated days can go awry in the blink of an eye, through no fault of our own. How we react, and recover – or don’t, as the case may be – says a lot about our character, or lack thereof. The fact is, more days than not will fall into this category. Seldom do schedules run like clockwork; rare are there uninterrupted intervals of peace and tranquility. Life doesn’t stop for anyone, and you had best hang on for the ride. Speaking of rides, and unexpected detours if you will, I recently took my car – my six-year old “Celeste” – for her annual checkup at the dealership. Over three hours, and nearly $500, later, I left with new rear brakes, an oil change, assorted minor
maintenance and a clean bill of health – for now. One day later, a co-worker said, “Didn’t you just get your car serviced?” Um…yeah? “Brake light is out.” And here I was so excited to no longer have a monthly car payment to contend with. Sigh. Take a deep breath; it calms the mind… so they say. On that note, I am happy to report to many inquiring readers that I have found a new yoga studio at which to continue my practice; new locale, anyway – same teacher, same familiar faces, same positive vibes. It’s amazing what those 75 minutes can do for the soul, even after the most pressing of days. There is something truly healing about those inhales and exhales, even while the mind races through its endless loop of thoughts. We could all benefit from
slowing down the pace a bit, mentally and physically. What has rushing ever accomplished that more careful consideration and contemplation couldn’t have improved upon? Even my baby betta, Spud, seems to have realized this, as he purposefully swims to and fro in his tiny bowl, stopping every so often – about once every five minutes, on average – to carefully inspect the thermometer I recently installed. Maybe he can read? Even his eating habits are methodical, as he carefully chooses each crumb, gobbling them up in – I kid you not – size order. And here I thought I was a bit OCD. Like human, like pet. And with that, the clock has tolled on deadline. And so, In Step readers, I bid you a fond adieu. ‘Til next week. Make it a good one.
Indoor Golfing Event The Nassau County Detectives’ Charitable Foundation is hosting an indoor golf event on April 6th at 6 p.m. at the PGA Tour Superstore in Westbury. This event will help raise money to assist detectives in times of extraordinary circumstances associated with devastating illness, death and natural disaster. Money raised also provides assistance to worthy local charities, community members in need and other law enforcement officers. This foundation works diligently to host events to raise money for those in need. Proceeds from past events have gone towards breast cancer research, those in need after Super Storm Sandy, Coats for Kids, Backpack Give-Away, Children of Hope, and to families who suffered the loss of a detective or other law enforcement professional on duty. I am proud to be a part of this organization and witness how it has grown and developed these past few years. This upcoming event is a great opportunity for our foundation to spread the word about the importance of coming together as a community. Together we can make a difference in the life of a family, another charity, and even a change in ourselves. John Conley, Chairman of the Nassau County Detectives’ Charitable Foundation Admission to this charity event is $50 and includes a $20 PGA Store gift card for attendees to use throughout the night. There will also be raffle tickets for sale. This funfilled evening of indoor golf will also include beer and wine tastings and some light appetizers. The Nassau County Charitable Foundation has partnered with local businesses to help sponsor the majority of costs for this event and allow people to take part in the event at a low cost. This event’s premier sponsor is Craig James Financial Services, LLC in Melville, NY. Tickets should be purchased in advance and checks should be made payable to the Nassau Detectives Foundation. More than 200 fire departments across New York State have already signed up for the seventh annual RecruitNY weekend, a major initiative of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY). On April 29th30th, firehouses across the State will open their doors to the public in an effort to increase membership in the volunteer fire service. Members of the public are invited to visit their local firehouses, where volunteer firefighters will be conducting tours of their facilities, demonstrating firefighting techniques, and allowing visitors to try on turnout gear. These activities, and more, will give visitors a taste of what it means to be in the fire service, and volunteer firefighters will be on hand to discuss the requirements and rewards of joining. All are welcome and encouraged to attend, including families with children. “Joining the volunteer fire service has been the most rewarding experience of my life, and I do not believe I am alone in saying that,” said FASNY President Ken Pienkowski. “Hundreds of volunteer fire departments across New York will be participating in RecruitNY, and we invite all New Yorkers to visit with their local firehouses. Visitors may be surprised to find their very own neighbors and friends already serving in the fire department, and just may be inspired to join them in protecting the community.” The volunteer fire service is an integral part of both life and the economy in New York State. In 2016, FASNY released an economic impact report, which quantifies the value of the volunteer fire service and its associated tax savings throughout the state. The report concluded that the annual cost of a replacement, all-paid fire service would be $3.87

This year, the club sold Syosset spirit wear on True Blue Day in support of the cause, last year they sold dog tags. It was only appropriate that on Valentine’s Day Syosset High School’s Interact Club held its latest philanthropic endeavor to raise money to provide life-saving heart surgeries to children in need. The group hosted a SweetHearts Fair in the student lobby area, which doubled as a celebration of life, as students videoconferenced with a recipient of a lifesaving heart procedure made possible through Interact and the community’s generosity. The Sweet-Hearts Fair offered a dessert bar, games, a mural painting project, a photo booth and much more – all for a mere $5. All proceeds from the event were donated to the

I-SWEEP Finalists Congratulations to Syosset High School seniors Dahyun Park and Jordan Sanford, who have qualified as finalists for the International Sustainable World Engineering Energy Environment Project Olympiad (I-SWEEEP!) to be held in Houston, Texas in May. Dahyun and Jordan worked together to explore the use of microbial
fuel cells for wastewater treatment. They worked in school and from home under the direction of Science Research Facilitator Veronica Ade. Both students were named semifinalists in this year’s Siemens Foundation Competition for Math, Science and Technology for this research project. For the past 10 years, I-SWEEEP! has inspired
students to develop projects to help preserve Earth’s resources and create a sustainable planet for everyone. Each year the competition brings together hundreds of the brightest STEMfocused students from approximately 70 countries in a fun and collaborative environment.

Celebration of Reading
Berry Hill Elementary School in the Syosset Central School District culminated a successful Parents as Reading Partners (PARP) week with a special donation. After reading a total of 29,923 minutes during the school’s weeklong celebration of reading, students gathered for a special ceremony in which Principal Mary Kolkhorst and members of the PTA presented a representative of Reading Reflections with
2,487 gently used books. Reading Reflections is an organization run by school-aged students and young adults that collects and sends books to millions of children around the world with limited access to reading materials due to less fortunate economic circumstances and other challenges. Eden, one of the student representatives from the organization, was on hand to accept Berry Hill’s donation and to thank the students and
staff and remind them of the importance of their contribution. Special kudos to Kerri Deangelo’s class for collecting 640 books! This year’s PARP theme at Berry Hill was “Go Bananas for Reading.” In addition to the donation and the tremendous amount of time spent reading at home and in school, students were treated to a visit from bestselling children’s author Michelle Knudsen.

Kimberly Costa of South Woods Middle School has been named a “Distinguished Teacher of 2017” by the Harvard Club of Long Island. “This award honors teachers who transform lives,” explained Dr. Judith Esterquest, Harvard Club of Long Island Chair of the Distinguished Teacher Selection Committee. “Devoted teachers like Ms. Costa offer Long Island students deep expertise, extraordinary talents, and countless hours of attention. By capturing the
minds and imaginations of our children and preparing them for challenges that were unknown even a few decades ago, these teachers shape the future of our country.” Ms. Costa will be honored at the Harvard Club of Long Island’s annual University Relations Luncheon on April 30, along with 11 other teachers from across Long Island. Following the award ceremony, Annette Gordon-Reed, Charles Warren Professor of American Legal History at Harvard Law School
and a Professor of History in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University, will give a lecture. She won the Pulitzer Prize in History in 2009 for The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family (W.W. Norton, 2009) and most recently published (with Peter S. Onuf) “Most Blessed of the Patriarchs”: Thomas Jefferson and the Empire of the Imagination (Liveright Publishing, 2016). Ms. Costa’s early experience as a lifeguard and swim instructor led her into the field of teaching. She has been teaching for 20 years and currently teaches grade 8 English and grade 6 ENL/ELA (English as a New Language/English Language Arts) at South Woods Middle School. She is also the advisor of the school’s Book Club. In October 2001, she received the New York State English Council Educator of Excellence Award for demonstrating exemplary teaching and leadership in English Language Arts education. In her spare time, Ms. Costa enjoys reading and boating with her
Open Work Session To further establish the transparency reforms promised by Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, the Oyster Bay Town Board is expanding a previously scheduled special work session at the Town’s next Town Board meeting on Tuesday, April 4th, at 10 a.m. at Oyster Bay Town Hall. In the interest of efficiency and expediency to make sure these locations have ample time to prepare for the coming season, the Town Board will publicly hear multiple proposals in response to a request for proposals for the operation of a food and beverage concession services at Town parks and beaches, as well as the Town Golf Course, Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced. “When I took office, I promised residents that a
new era would begin in the Town of Oyster Bay, one with the highest ethical standards, and complete transparency, to regain the faith and trust of our residents,” Supervisor Saladino stated. “The process of a request for proposals follows the letter of the law, but we wanted to do much more to provide additional transparency. The purpose of this work session is to open the doors of Town government to everyone and to ensure we are operating in complete sunlight.” The work session, which will allow for the board to hear presentations on food and beverage concession services at the Town’s Golf Course, as well as at Tobay and Tappen Beaches, will take place in the Town Board Hearing Room in Oyster Bay Town Hall,
located at 54 Audrey Ave in Oyster Bay, and will be open to the public, who are welcome to attend and observe the process. The public is encouraged to provide input by offering their comments via email, letter, or during the public comment portion of a Town Board meeting. Additionally, the work session will be live streamed through the Town’s website, www. oysterbaytown.com. “We want to provide our residents with the best food and beverage services in a way that is affordable and enhances their experiences at our parks, beaches and premiere golf course,” Supervisor Saladino stated. “Holding this process at a public open meeting assures that we get it done in time for this season and that we do it right.”

I did not like to write, and I most definitely did not like to present,” said Karishma Minal Shah, a former student who is expected to graduate from Harvard College this year. “This year, I am writing my senior thesis and I often have to remind myself of the skills I learned in her 8th grade class: reading texts carefully, making a cogent analysis, and clearly articulating an argument. Ms. Costa’s influence is even apparent in my extracurricular activities. Ms. Costa’s penchant for poetry kindled one in me, which ultimately led me to become the VP of my high school’s Literary Art Magazine and, at Harvard, to create a Poetry Public Service Project with a Federal Judge,” added Ms. Shah. When South Woods Middle School Principal Michelle Burget learned of this award, she said, “Kim Costa is a master teacher, quietly and elegantly connecting students with their literary selves each

Her daily work is a combination of a commitment to excellence, a devotion to children, and a passion for reading and writing that fuels curiosity, creativity, and a love of learning.” “I will often chat with students and ask what they are reading and why, and more often than not, they reveal that Ms. Costa recommended that particular book,” said Ms. Burget. “When asked to describe Ms. Costa, a teaching assistant who has worked in her class said, ‘she simply makes the stories come alive for kids in a way they didn’t know was possible.’ So many students who claim to not enjoy reading or writing walk away from Ms. Costa’s class having fallen in love.” At the ceremony on April 30th, the Harvard Club of Long Island will announce the Distinguished Teacher of 2017 who will also receive a scholarship for a “Harvard experience” at the Harvard University campus in Cambridge, Mass. Past winners of the scholarships have enhanced their teaching by sampling the resources available to Harvard
students: meeting with faculty; visiting research laboratories, rare book archives, and specialty museums; and enjoying visual and performance art. The scholarships are funded by contributions from Harvard alumni living on Long Island. This year’s 12 Distinguished Teacher Award winners were nominated by current Harvard undergraduates and then selected by Harvard Club of Long Island board members. This year’s award winners teach economics, English, history, math, physics, and science research. The winners teach in the Baldwin, Elmont, Farmingdale, Herricks, Lynbrook, Manhasset, Mt Sinai, Sayville, Sewnahaka, Smithtown, and Syosset school districts. Previous winners of this award in the Syosset Central School District include Ms. Susan Dowd in 2016, Mr. Brian Belanger and Ms. Linda Stollow in 2015, Ms. Allison Noonan in 2014, Mr. Stephen Wolfson in 2006, and Mr. Arthur Kalish in 2005.
Pom Pom Perch
First-grade students in Ms. Schmidt’s class at Kramer Lane Elementary School in the Bethpage Union Free School District used their creativity and problem-solving skills to create a perch for their new friend Harry the pom-pom. After discussing how
buildings are constructed and understanding that the base of a structure is key to holding it up, students were then given specific materials in which to construct their own perch which would hold Harry and allow him to see what is happening

Seventh-graders Sage Gladstone and Elena Andrade from South Woods Middle School in Syosset recently took the two top honors in the Long Island Junior Forensics League Tournament. Following weeks of practicing under the
guidance of Syosset High School English teacher Lydia Esslinger and members of the high school forensics team, Sage and Elena competed at a middle school forensics tournament held at Kellenberg High School in February.
Both Sage and Elena competed in the category of Oral Interpretation. Sage recited a collection of Judith Viorst poems and won first place overall, while Elena recited a collection of Maya Angelou poems and placed second.

A Charitable Mission They say laughter is the best medicine, and the Sarah Grace Foundation for Children With Cancer Inc. will combine chuckles and charity at its 14th annual Night of Laughter. The popular fundraiser, which benefits children battling pediatric cancer and their families, will be held at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury on Friday, April 14th at 7 p.m. The Night of Laughter is the premier fundraiser for the foundation, named in honor of Sarah Grace Weippert, who lost her battle with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2002 at the age of 12. Her parents, Matthew and Marissa Weippert, founded the organization the following year with a commitment to improving the quality of life of children with cancer, and to provide comfort and support to their families. Comedian Rick Morgan, who has performed in Atlantic City and at Caroline’s New York City, returns as the host. A dedicated supporter of the foundation, Morgan discussed his motivation to put on a show that will both delight crowds and benefit children. “I am overwhelmed by the inspiration this little girl has given me,” he said of Sarah. “I feel like a
soldier in her battles and victories.” Headlining this year’s slate of comedians is Holbrook native Stevie Geebee, billed as the World’s Funniest Accountant. He is known for his Long Island specific comedy. Also appearing are Jack Simmons who has appeared on Showtime, HBO and Evening at the Apollo; Steve Marshall, who has performed his standup routine at comedy clubs, resorts and colleges across the country and points out the absurdity of political correctness; and Al Martin, seen on the Joan Rivers Show and the Geraldo Show and owner of two Manhattan comedy clubs. Although the Night of Laughter benefits children, it is for mature audiences only. The cost of $85 per person includes entertainment, dinner, beer, wine, soda, coffee and dessert. There will be numerous raffles including four Walt Disney World park passes, TD Bank Visa Gift Cards, as well as a 50/50/50 with even prizes for three winners. Raffle books, which include these grand prizes, are available at a pre-show discount of $25 per book. Tickets for the event and raffle books must be purchased in advance. A Chinese auction will

Poetry Champion Syosset High School junior Iree Mann is the New York State champion in the 12th annual Poetry Out Loud competition. Iree will represent the state in the national semifinals at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., on April 25th, with a chance to advance to the finals, which will take place there on April 26th. Iree outshined 24 of the brightest, most creative young student poets in the state, reciting a wide range of poems from the official POL anthology at the state-level competition held in Syracuse. As state champ, she received $200; an all-expenses paid trip to the national semifinals and
Syosset High School will be awarded a $500 stipend for the purchase of poetry books. Iree’s winning recitations were of the following poems: “American Smooth,” by Rita Dove; “The Golden Shovel,” by Terrance Hayes; and “Break of Day,” by John Donne. POL competition participants are evaluated on a cumulative point total covering all three recitations that factor in accuracy, dramatic appropriateness, evidence of the poem’s understanding, presence, and voice and articulation as well as overall performance.
