Colonial History Night

he 2nd Annual History Night at Old Country Road School in Hicksville brought fun activities from the past to the present, giving a sampling of homespun living to a new generation. Each family had the chance to participate in activities from as far back as the Colonial era. These included instructional square dancing, handmade craftwork, teepee construction, clay molding and sampling of home-cooked delights. Pictured are some of the participants.

After six weeks of developing, building, and programming their robots, high school students from Long Island, New York City, New Jersey, and Brazil will have the opportunity to compete in the 15th Annual SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition ( w w w. u s f i r s t . o r g ) , presented by SchoolBusiness Partnerships of New York, Inc. (SBPLI). The competition will take place on March 27th-29th at Hofstra University’s David S. Mack Sports & Exhibition Complex in Hempstead, New York. Fifty teams will demonstrate their skills in science and technology while competing for honors that reward design excellence, competitive play, sportsmanship, and high-impact partnerships among schools, businesses, and communities. Founded by inventor Dean Kamen, who introduced the IBOT Mobility System and the Segway® Human Transporter (HT), FIRST was created to inspire an appreciation of science and technology in young people, their schools, and their communities. Now in its 25th season, the FIRST Robotics Competition anticipates more than 2,700 teams in 92 cities worldwide to compete in 98 Regional and District Competitions. More than 2,000 students will compete at the Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition to earn a spot at the FIRST Championship, to be held April 24-27 at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Missouri. This year’s challenge, “Aerial AssistSM,” is played by two Alliances of three teams each.

Alliances compete by trying to score as many balls as possible into goals during a two-anda-half-minute match. Additional points are earned by robots working together to score goals, and by throwing and catching balls over a truss suspended just over five feet above the floor as they move the ball down the field. “The students who participate in the FIRST Robotics Competition are not only building robots; they are building character, self-respect, and relationships with their peers,” said Dean Kamen, president of DEKA Research & Development and FIRST Founder, adding, “Winning the game is fun, but the importance of FIRST is that you’ll get much more out of it than you put in, and it’s going to change the rest of your life.” “We are extremely excited to see what our participants for the FIRST Robotics Competition have in store for us in this year’s challenge,” said Joani Madarash, Executive Director, SBPLI. “The SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition is the highlight of these students’ academic careers. For some, it’s a chance to take part in making a minuscule idea become a reality. For others, it enhances their opportunities for scholarships and awards that will help them continue their education and pursue careers in engineering and technology. Most importantly, this competition is a fun and exciting means of showing students that they can accomplish anything they envision, if they put great effort towards it.” This season, students participating in FIRST Robotics are eligible to

apply for more than $18 million in scholarships from 200 universities throughout the country. Over a six-week timeframe, students work with professional engineering mentors to design a robot using a “kit of parts” and a standard set of rules. Once these students create the robot, their teams participate in regional competitions that measure the ability of each robot, the power of collaboration, teamwork, and the determination of students. Under Governor Cuomo’s Open for Fishing and Hunting initiative, a two-day, hands-on program on hunting safety will be offered on April 26th and 27th by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) Sportsman Education Program, the agency announced today. “Hunting and fishing are an important part of Long Island’s heritage, and we are very fortunate that the region offers a multitude of diverse and rewarding recreational opportunities,” said DEC Commissioner Joe Martens. “The 2014 Youth Conservation Program is the perfect way to introduce the next generation of sportsmen and women to hunting ethics and teach them how to be responsible hunters from the start. These youth education

courses fit right in with Governor Cuomo’s Open for Fishing and Hunting initiative to expand hunting and fishing opportunities in New York State.” Since 1994 this event has been sponsored by the DEC’s Sportsman Education Program, the New York State Conservation Officers Association and the Peconic River Sportsman’s Club. The Youth Conservation Program will be held at the Peconic River Sportsman’s Club in Manorville. Each class is limited to 30 participants and selections are made by a panel that reviews a 75-word application. Enrollment in the class is open to all youth between the ages of 12 and 16 who have not yet taken their Hunter Education course. To date approximately 800 students have

successfully completed YCP on Long Island. Participants who successfully complete the program will receive their Hunter Education Training Certificate. This certificate is required in order to purchase a hunting license. Governor Cuomo’s NY Open for Fishing and Hunting Initiative is an effort to improve recreational activities for sportsmen and sportswomen and to boost tourism opportunities throughout the state. This initiative includes the streamlining of fishing and hunting licensing and reducing license fees, improved access for fishing at various sites across the state and increasing

hunting opportunities in various regions. This year, Governor Cuomo unveiled the NYS Adventure License, which allows outdoor enthusiasts, boaters, anglers and hunters to consolidate their recreation licenses and benefits onto their New York State Driver’s License, and the NYS Adventure License Plates, featuring nine plate designs available for free to those buying new lifetime hunting, fishing or park licenses in 2014. In support of this initiative, this year Governor Cuomo has proposed creating 50 new land access projects to connect hunters, anglers, bird watchers and others who enjoy the outdoors to more than 380,000 acres of existing state and easement lands that have gone untapped until now.

Talking Points ‘til the big day – and I’m still wrestling with what, exactly, I have to offer this group of impressionable young minds, all at the point in their lives where they are desperately trying to do exactly what my title suggests – discover that passion which will drive them into a particular field, hopefully to stay, for a long and fulfilling career. I guess a good starting point would be the initial inspiration for my topic, a letter I received from a local reader many months ago, in response to a column I had recently published, stating: “I wanted to let you know that indeed your words were read and inspired someone… as a humble writer myself, I know that is all we really want after all.” Creative Engagement at its best, no? Just the knowledge that my words had reached someone is some of the most positive feedback one can receive.

It simply reaffirms the notion that what we do for a living should be more than a job; it should reach far beyond the scope of merely being a means to an end, a way to pay the bills, etc. Above all else, it should engage YOU. If others find a similar connection through you, so much the better, an added bonus. I still don’t know exactly what I will say once I step to the head of the classroom a little over a week from now. But I suppose a good starting point is simply speaking openly and honestly and attempting to make a connection. And if I can reach even one person and help them discover his/her own passion in life, I will consider it a success.

Discovering The Passion To Do What You Love … This is the topic I selected for my upcoming presentation at the annual C.W. Post Honors Conference, a oneday schedule of seminars and panels, lectures and performances, all centered around a common theme, this year’s being Creative Engagement. When initially approached about the prospect of being a part of this Conference, one I had attended each year of my own tenure at C.W. Post, my first reaction was the usual mix of anxiety and sheer terror that comes when any form of public speaking is broached. Ensuring that healthy fish populations – and good water quality is maintained in the Peconic Bay and other Long Island waters is a top priority for The Conservancy. “Decades ago, protecting

land was enough to ensure the survival and viability of our local wildlife, but today our efforts are concentrated on keeping the lands and especially the waters around Long Island clean and healthy,” said Nancy Kelley, Executive Director of The Nature Conservancy on Long Island. “It’s especially important that we do everything we can to avert threats –like nitrogen pollution in our waters –so that our majestic wildlife species can survive and thrive here.”

Savoring The Days ‘Til Graduation

With less than forty school days of my senior year left, I am beginning to understand why people are always talking about savoring the moment. As a high school senior, I am very excited to be “in the home stretch,” even though this means that I am one step closer to leaving my home, my school and my family. With just about four months before I leave, I find myself spending more time with my brother. Lately, we have been bonding over the simplest things. Perhaps, this is because he will be sad when I

leave for college, like my mom predicts; however I have my own theory. I believe that I am the one who will miss him when I leave for college! As the primary agent of my socialization for these past seventeen years, my family has had a ridiculous impact on my personality. My brother, more than anyone, has shaped my life. He is the peanut butter to my jelly; my little brother has always been there for me. Even though I am counting down the days before I hit the road, I am well aware that my days with family

are numbered. I know that I am going to miss them. Even though I will love college, I will miss playing catch with my little brother on the front lawn. I will miss my mom’s cooking, and I will miss my dad’s antics. As I cross off each day on the calendar of my high school career, I can say that I enjoyed every minute that I spent with my friends and family. When I start the next chapter of my life, I will not forget the memories that have been formed or the bonds that I have made with my friends, and most importantly, my brother.

Staff from The Nature Conservancy confirmed recently the presence of a pair of nesting Bald Eagles at The Conservancy’s Mashomack Preserve on Shelter Island, New York. The eagle nest at Mashomack Preserve is just the third known nesting site in the Long Island region in recent times. Tucked away high in an oak tree in a remote, hard to access location, the birds were discovered by Nature Conservancy’s Preserve Manager Mike Scheibel, who said, “Bald eagles have recently become a regular sight on Shelter Island. We are extremely pleased to find them nesting on the Mashomack Preserve where years ago The Nature Conservancy preserved this land as a secure nesting area for ospreys. It is indeed rewarding to know that this valuable habitat is now also home to our national symbol.”

The Mentoring Partnership of Long Island (MPLI), the leading organization for providing quality mentoring opportunities for Long Island’s youth, held its 10th Annual Mentoring Matters Conference, Presented by AT&T, on March 13th-14th at the LIU Post campus in Brookville. MPLI partner, and Mentoring Matters Conference Title Sponsor, AT&T, kicked off the twoday conference with a $20,000 check presented to MPLI, along with key elected officials, and LIU Post representatives in support of youth mentoring programs. The Mentoring Matters Conference two-day conference brought together participants and advocates from Long Island’s youth mentoring community, who participated in educational sessions and workshops designed to further their involvement in mentoring programs. Lighting It Up Blue Manhasset Special Education PTA (SEPTA) is delighted to support the Manhasset Functional Academics class as it participates in the 2014 “Light It Up Blue” campaign in support of World Autism Awareness Day on April 2nd. SEPTA is asking that all local businesses and Manhasset residents join in this special event by simply placing blue lights on their building and decorating with blue. “Our goal is to see Plandome Road completely lit up in blue on April 2nd,” stated Michelle Fazzolari and Marry Ann Klein who head the functional academics class in the Manhasset Secondary School. “We are extremely

excited about this endeavor and are honored to have the opportunity to educate the community by bringing more awareness to autism,” Fazzolari and Klein added. The class is also interested in establishing new ties with local businesses that can lead to potential virtual training sights for students in the future. The effort began in mid-March with a letter writing campaign by students asking the community to participate in the World Autism Awareness Day. “Nothing would make us happier than to see our students advocate for themselves, while giving them an opportunity to have a deeper connection

with their community,” Fazzolari and Klein said. Manhasset SEPTA is helping to promote the event throughout the school, with parents and local business by asking for the community to decorate in blue. The Town of Oyster Bay has rescheduled its semiannual Blood Drive to Thursday, April 24th. Originally slated for March 6th, the Town of Oyster Bay was asked to move their date by the New York Blood Center to accommodate other blood drives affected by the recent snow storms. Winter is traditionally a season when blood donations decrease while hospital and patient needs remain the same.

The locations for the blood drives are: Town Hall South Conference Room, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa (9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.); Town Hall North at the Blood Mobile, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay (9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) and the Department of Public Works War Room (Highway), 150 Miller Place (11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.). To qualify as a blood donor, a person must between the ages of 17

and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note dated within one year of donation), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. All blood types are needed, but O negative blood types are universal and especially needed at this time of need. It’s Time For Tea “It’s Time For Tea,” a fascinating exhibit of ceramic works of art related to tea and its accoutrements, will be on display from April 5th through June 8th at the Oyster Bay Historical Society. Created by the members of the Ceramic Media Group of the Long Island Craft Guild, the show features a creative selection of both functional and sculptural pieces. The public is invited to meet the artists at the opening reception on Sunday, April 6th, from 3 to 6 p.m. Renowned ceramist Fong Choo juried the exhibit. He has taught numerous workshops both nationally and internationally. His most recent invited workshop was hosted by the Gaya Ceramic Center in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia. Last spring

he was a presenter in London, Ontario, Canada at the annual Fusion Clay Conference. This summer, Mr. Choo will be an Artist in Residence at the University of Tasmania in Launceston, Australia. He is currently working on a number of patron-commissioned pieces. His works have received numerous awards at The Smithsonian Craft Show, The Philadelphia Museum of Art and The American Craft Exposition. He is an adjunct faculty member at Bellarmine University in Louisville, KY but committed to the conscious life of a practicing studio potter. Admissions Interviews Tips It’s college application time and your teen has taken the SAT or ACT, kept up his or her grades, written a stellar essay and completed all college applications. There is one more piece to the college admissions puzzle that could potentially gain your teen the acceptance he or she seeks: the college admissions interview. “Not all colleges require a college admissions interview, but many of the competitive institutions do, as do some colleges’ departments or schools that require secondary admission,” says Eileen Huntington of Huntington Learning Center. “The admissions

interview intimidates many prospective students, but we encourage them to approach this as an opportunity to put a face to a name, make a good impression and articulate face-to-face why they would be a great student at the college.” Huntington offers a few tips to students as they prepare for the college admissions interview: Do spend time reflecting on yourself as a candidate for admission. The interviewer might want to learn more about your reasons for wanting to attend the college and the components of your background that would

make you an ideal fit. There are no wrong answers in an admissions interview, since the interviewer simply wants to get to know you better. However, the more you prepare, the more polished you will come across. Don’t present yourself as someone different than the real you. While you might feel tempted to embellish your résumé or act in a way you think might impress the interviewer, it is better to be honest about who you are and what you have to offer. That may even mean discussing lessons you have learned from challenges or failures. Do act professionally.

You should treat the admissions interview as a chance to share your goals, educational journey, future plans and excitement about the college. Although the interviewer wants you to feel comfortable, treat this interview as you would a job interview. Come ready to answer a variety of questions about yourself in a direct and clear way. Don’t be aloof or act too casual. Avoid cracking jokes, using inappropriate language or sharing too much personal information. Relax and be yourself, but remember that this is still an interview for college admission. Do be prepared to

ask questions. There is a good chance that you will be asked if you have any questions. Do your research about the college and the program or programs in which you are interested and develop a list of questions before your interview. Have them ready just in case. Don’t waste valuable interview time asking about things you could learn elsewhere. While there may be time allotted for questions, choose those questions wisely. You could easily find out about the admissions process and extracurricular activities on the college’s website. “The admissions
