Catholic Health Services Offers Tips to Reduce COVID-19 Anxiety Anxiety is a normal response to a stressful situation and can inspire adaptive behavior in many situations. However, when facing mounting uncertainty, the brain can go into an anxiety spiral and cause atypical reactions. Knowing the body’s physical reactions to the different types of anxiety is important. Typical stress reactions can include temporary difficulty concentrating, irritability, fatigue, stomachache and difficulty sleeping. Atypical reactions can manifest in persistent and/or excessive worry that prevents you from completing daily tasks, changes to energy levels, eating patterns and/or prolonged and overwhelming worry. Dr. Brenner strongly suggests that anyone experiencing unusual or atypical reactions that won’t subside in a short

period of time seek professional mental health assistance. To reduce coronavirus-related anxiety, there are several steps individuals can take. These include: • Find meaningful tasks and roles within your support network to channel your anxiety • Create spaces that are not focused on coronavirus. This could include a social media thread on other topics, or watching movies • Savor small positive moments, amplify positive stories and stay optimistic • Practice mindfulness when managing anxiety such as performing exercises and deep breathing. Beautiful landscaping can add instant curb appeal to a property. But beauty isn’t the only thing that makes idyllic landscaping attractive to homeowners. Some landscaping features, such as shade trees, save homeowners money while adding aesthetic appeal. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that shading is the most cost-effective way to reduce solar heat gain in a home. Shading also cuts air conditioning costs, which tend to be expensive in areas with warm, humid climates. In fact, the DOE notes that well-planned landscapes can reduce unshaded homes’ air conditioning costs by anywhere from 15 to 50 percent. When planting shade trees, one of the first decisions homeowners will need to make is which type of tree, deciduous or evergreen, they want to plant. Deciduous trees are those that seasonally shed their leaves, while evergreens are trees that keep their leaves throughout the year. Deciduous trees can help keep homes cool in the summer by blocking sun, and those same trees can be beneficial in winter after they shed their leaves by letting the sun in and keeping homes warm.

She is an adjunct professor at SUNY Old Westbury, works with doctoral students on their dissertations at Concordia University, and has published numerous articles in educational journals. Dr. Clark received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science degrees from CUNY Queens College, her PD from Long Island University, and her PhD from Concordia University Chicago. She will be honored for her accomplishments at a May awards ceremony in Albany, New York. As New York’s Elementary School Principal of the Year, Clark will be celebrated as a National Distinguished Principal by the National Association of Elementary School Principals at a recognition program sponsored by NAESP this fall in Washington, DC.

Students in Mary ZitoFarello and Mr. Victor Lam’s Art of Positive Living class at Hicksville High School have been using their skills to help put smiles on the faces of children, forever changing their lives. The class is sewing Smile Dolls for Operation Smile, an international charity that funds surgeries for children born with cleft conditions. A child is born with a cleft lip or cleft palate every three minutes. Through photographs and videos, the students learned about children born with this condition, and how many are unable to receive the medical care they need because it is too costly, far away or specialized. They also grew to understand that cases of the condition can be life threatening, and at the very least, children with the condition are often subject to social isolation and bullying due to their appearance. According to ZitoFarello and Lam, students enrolled in the class wanted to make a difference. They began making Smile Dolls that will be donated to Operation Smile to help lift the spirits of children waiting for surgery around the world. In April, they will be sending approximately 75 dolls to Operation Smile. In addition, the class is educating other Hicksville High School students through an information campaign about cleft lip and cleft palate, spearheading awareness about the need to help over 5 million children waiting for care in 34 countries. “Service learning is a component in the Art of Positive Living class,” said Lam of the first-year course, which enrolls 86 students between three sections. “We teach empathy and how helping and teaching others feeds positive self

Operation Smile was a great organization that allows us to teach students about a condition that is not so prevalent among them.” “The goal of the class is to try to put the research into practice by building in our students the habits that will allow them to live a more balanced, healthy and joyful life,” said Hicksville Supervisor for Socials Studies and Home and Careers Dr. Rose Borda. “One aspect of the course is helping others,

which builds in students a sense of happiness and strong mental health.” During the class, students explore how small, positive actions can cause a ripple effect for themselves and others. What Causes Curled Shingles?

No homeowner wants to look at the exterior of his or her home and see roof damage. Curled shingles are a problem many homeowners have encountered. This particular problem is not

always indicative that a roof is on its way out. In fact, the home improvement resource This Old House notes that as asphalt shingles age, their corners often begin to curl downward or upward. Homeowners who notice this early enough can glue down the curled section of each shingle. Some shingles may be curling because they’re defective. Fortified Roofing, a New Jersey-based roofing company that specializes in the repairing and replacing of various roofing configurations, advises homeowners to contact a local roofing professional to diagnose the cause of the curling. Doing so quickly can prevent curled shingles from contributing to more widespread damage. Moisture and poor ventilation may be contributing to curled shingles as well.

Organic Mulch Organic mulches are made up of materials that decompose over time. The Charity of The Month for March is: United Cerebral Palsy of Long Island www.ucp-li.org United Cerebral Palsy of Long Island is a non-profit organization with the mission to advance the independence, productivity and full citizenship of people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities. They have actively been serving those in need on Long Island for over 70 years!

Fundraising is also a very significant part of UCP, as it is with just about any other nonprofit organization. However, United Cerebral Palsy of Long Island is one of the most fiscally responsible agencies on our island because 92 cents of every dollar they receive goes back into their programs and services.

This organization, despite their name, helps individuals with a wide range of disabilities. In fact, over 65 percent of those they serve today do not have cerebral palsy. In addition to helping those with cerebral plasy, they currently are serving those with:
