T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-proﬁt organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true. Below is a story about Patricia, who recently had her wish granted. You could be next! Patricia Bachmore is a 75 year old resident of Amityville. She wished for new furniture and thanks to the Long Island chapter of this national nonproﬁt, her wish was granted! Patricia has fostered and socialized rescue kittens and cats for years. Understandably, that took a toll on her furniture. Although the furniture was old and falling apart, she could not afford to replace it on her own because of her limited income. In December of 2020, The Twilight Wish Foundation granted her with a new sofa and kitchen chairs, which she wished for. In addition to her work with rescue organizations, Patricia is part of the Amityville neighborhood watch program and also works with the Town

of Babylon’s 311 citizens complaint unit. She also assists other senior citizens in her mobile home park with grocery shopping and other errands. THANK YOU PATRICIA FOR ALL OF YOUR SELFLESS EFFORTS! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate ﬁnancial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Please note, when going to grant a wish, this foundation takes all the necessary safety precautions. New York Blood Center Announces A Blood Emergency New York Blood Center (NYBC) announces a blood shortage in the region, one year after New York was the epicenter of the pandemic. Before COVID-19, donors could stop by community blood drives at convenient locations like high schools, colleges, and offices. It has been one

year since these groups had to cancel their blood drives due to COVID-19 and few have been able to resume these lifesaving events. NYBC currently has a 4 day supply of blood, which is well below what is needed by area hospitals. New York’s healthcare system requires 1,500

donations each day to treat patients ranging from trauma victims to newborn babies and their mothers to cancer patients. Donors with type O and type B blood are especially needed as NYBC currently has a 1-2 day supply of these blood types. “With thousands of New Yorkers getting

vaccinated each day, we are thrilled to watch our state recover from this catastrophic year,” said Andrea Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director at New York Blood Center. “As New York bounces back in strides this spring, we need everyone to make an appointment and donate blood to help save lives. While the

end of the pandemic is near, our struggle to fight for those in need continues.” We are taking extra precautions to help prevent the personto-person spread of COVID-19. As always, people are not eligible to donate if they’re experiencing a cold, sore throat, respiratory

Return Of Bethpage Air Show At Jones Beach State Park Governor Andrew M. Cuomo recently announced the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach State Park will return this Memorial Day weekend after a one-year absence. The outdoor show, sponsored by Bethpage Federal Credit Union, features a range of military and civilian aerial performers. This year’s show will be a ticketed event, with reduced capacity and social distancing measures in place to ensure a safe return of the patriotic Long Island beachfront tradition. “As we continue to see progress in our fight against COVID and cautiously reopen our state, we can look forward to enjoying more and more outdoor adventures this summer - including the annual Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach State Park,” Governor Cuomo said. “With safety measures in place, New Yorkers and visitors can get back to enjoying all that Jones Beach and Long Island State Parks have to offer, and this annual festival is a great way to get outdoors and support the regional Long Island economy.” The Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach, one of the most popular events on Long Island, was canceled last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Its return this year brings back a Memorial Day weekend tradition that celebrates the beginning of summer at Long Island’s beaches, and honors military families and those who serve our country. This year’s show features the United States Air Force Thunderbirds, the United States Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt (Warthog), United States Army Golden Knights U.S. Army parachute team, and United States Coast Guard Search and Rescue team, as well as many other worldclass civilian performers. The Bethpage Air Show will take place Friday, May 28, (Practice show); Saturday, May 29, and Sunday, May 30, 2021 from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. each day. Visitors must purchase a ticket in advance to park at Jones Beach during the show. Details on purchasing a ticket

State Parks Commissioner Erik Kulleseid said, “What better way to begin summer beach season than the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach. Thanks to Governor Cuomo’s leadership and support, State Parks is excited to host the return of the Air Show. I’m grateful for all the sponsors, partners, performers and staff who work hard to carry on this tradition that brings so many families and friends together.”

Councilwoman Maier Cautions Residents Not to Fall Victim to Phone Scams Town of Oyster Bay Councilwoman Laura Maier cautions residents to be on alert of potential telephone scams, particularly those soliciting any personal information or monetary contribution. “Time and time again we hear about scammers trying to obtain sensitive information from unsuspecting residents, especially our senior citizens,” said Councilwoman Maier. “Many times, scammers pose as officials from the Internal Revenue Service, Social Security Administration or

other well-known agency, designed to intimidate the call recipient.” The Councilwoman noted that many times, their return phone numbers can also be falsified to appear as a familiar number. In addition to seniors, others frequently targeted include students and first-generation Americans. Current common scams include offers of debt relief, car warranty extensions, and credit repairs. Scammers have also been known to pose as family members allegedly in trouble and seeking money. “The last thing families need,

especially during these uncertain times, is someone trying to scam them out of their hard-earned money,” said Councilwoman Maier. “We alert all residents to be wary of any unsolicited phone calls, especially those requesting money or personal information, even if they claim to be from a government or bank entity.” The Federal Trade Commission offers the following tips to residents who fall victim to scam phone calls: · Hang up the phone. Don’t press numbers to speak to alive operator or

take your number off the list, this just confirms your phone number. · Consider asking your phone company whether they charge for blocking phone numbers. · Don’t trust your caller ID. Scammers use the internet to make calls all over the world. · Report your experience to the FTC online or by calling 1-877-3824357. Visit www.ftc.gov/calls for more information.

Students Compete in Long Island Junior Science and Humanities Symposium Two Syosset High School research students placed first and second in their respective categories of the 2021 Long Island Junior Science and Humanities (JSHS) Symposium. Seniors Aryan Ghotra and Kevin Li submitted original research investigations in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) for Chemistry and Engineering Sciences, respectively. Kevin’s project “Degradation of Surface Textures of 3D Printed Alginate Scaffolds for Bone Transplants” was awarded first place and a $2,000 scholarship in the Engineering Sciences category at the Regional semifinals. He presented his research via Zoom at the Finals in February, where he advanced to the National JSHS Symposium to be held as a virtual competition in April.

Residents Invited To Submit Photos For Town Publications Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Laura Maier invites residents to submit photos taken in the Town of Oyster Bay to be considered for use in Town publications. “Our residents recently received their 2021 Town calendar, which is filled with photos submitted throughout the year depicting people, places, community events and scenery throughout our Town,” said Councilwoman Maier. “We accept photos for

the calendar, as well as other Town publications, including our website and brochures.” Councilwoman Maier noted that photos should be taken within the confines of the Town of Oyster Bay. Digital submissions are preferred, but highquality photos may also be submitted. Emailed photos should be sent to photos@oysterbayny.gov. Printed photos can be submitted to the Town’s Public
