The March of Time “Most of us take for granted that time flies, meaning that it passes too quickly. But in the mindful state, time doesn’t really pass at all. There is only a single instant of time that keeps renewing itself over and over with infinite variety.” ~ Deepak Chopra Time, without fail, is the one thing we all wish we had more of, made better use of, didn’t squander so liberally… and the one thing we can never get back once it is lost. Even with this insight, though, it tends to continue to pass us by, just out of grasp. Why is that? What is the driving force behind our ability to let the minutes lapse into hours, the hours into days, the days into a downward spiral of being complacently, and consistently, unproductive? Some would point to the company we keep, the environments which surround us, the choices we make
along the way that lead us to find comfort - even in our misery, at times - but comfort, nonetheless. Is it our great fear of change, of upsetting the routine, which leads us to sit back and watch as the world parades on by? There are those who make it their mission to take action, regardless of the unfavorable circumstances they may find themselves thrown into; but these individuals seem to represent a slim minority. How do we, the others, this great majority who desire to improve our lot in life, follow suit? Perhaps if these instants of time were filled with the “infinite variety” Chopra speaks of, life would not seem so mundane at intervals. But the fluctuations which occur are often too minor to register as true growth. It seems we, as a society, are incapable of feeling we are moving forward unless we are in the midst of tumult and upheaval.

Looking Back
The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers together form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters,
local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders, local village government and other agencies. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup announced their decision to become an independent not-for-profit corporation named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become self-sustaining, with a solid foundation of local community support. Welcome Friends is currently in need of the following volunteer positions: Cooks, Assistant Cooks/ Food Prep and Pick Up/Delivery and a Grant Writer. All families throughout Nassau County are encouraged to attend Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s (GSNC) ninth annual Girls Go the Distance (GGTD) Family FunDay event at Old Bethpage Village Restoration. This year’s event will be held on Sunday, April 22nd. GSNC will once again offer a variety of activities for our Girl Scouts and their families to earn patches and prizes, all in an effort to promote healthy living. All participating Girl Scouts will receive the Girls Go the Distance patch and
will have the opportunity to earn additional patches based on designated activities they choose to participate in. “Girls Go the Distance is such a wonderful event our girls look forward to each year, and we’re excited this year it falls on Earth Day. This event is designed to encourage girls to be active outdoors in a setting that also promotes a healthy lifestyle,” said Rande Bynum, Chief Executive Officer of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “There are many positive benefits of children and pre-teens
being active. Our research shows that Girl Scouts are more likely to seek challenges, learn from setbacks, as well as develop and maintain healthy relationships. Family FunDay encourages families to be together and develop these leadership outcomes for their girls. ” This year, the girls and their families will have an opportunity to explore the
village and work together to solve mind bending challenges. Clues along the way will help families solve the challenge for the chance to win a prize. Families will then move on to numerous games setup on the fairgrounds. For the first time, GGTD Family FunDay will debut the Guide Dog Foundation patch program, initially designed by a fifth grade

Family Fun Day Girl Scout. Girls will be able to navigate an obstacle course with the guide dogs and will complete the initial steps to earn this new patch. Online registration officially closes Friday, April 20th at www.gsnc. org/funday. Day of the event walk-ins are also welcome. The participation fee for Girl Scouts is $25;
Tag-Alongs registration, is $15 until event day; and accompanying adult is $10. Participants have the option to pay for their registration fees directly online via credit card or offline via personal check or cash or cookie credits. The Art and Pleasure of Meditation Before getting into the subject, let’s divide our readers into two categories. The first are those who are faithful followers of yoga, who practice meditation regularly and find deep layers of inner peace within themselves. The second group are the many folks who have never tried meditating simply because they never had the opportunity (or desire) to pursue it. It is this group that today’s column is for. As a starter, let’s take a look at what is happening around the world today. Tensions are rising among many countries, trade wars are a real possibility, inflation is starting to come into play, the Federal Reserve may soon raise interest rates; that, plus the wild gyrations of the stock market, leave a host of uncertainties for many of us. Being affected by all of this, wouldn’t it be nice to have an outlet to channel these negative thoughts and events into a more calming, soothing state of mind? If so, welcome to the art and
pleasure of meditation! First off, by doing this at home, one does not need special equipment or any type of meditation room. What is necessary is a quiet room or a place in the home where you will not be interrupted. As you progress further into this skill, you will be able to take a few minutes to meditate anywhere you might be. The time spent in meditation could be as little as 5-10 minutes or up to an hour. As a starter, many people find that sitting cross-legged on the floor, both thumbs lightly touching, with hands outstretched, palms facing upward and eyes closed, is a good start. One should begin with deep breathing, inhaling, holding it for a few seconds, then slowly exhaling through the mouth. With practice, one can easily take in deeper breaths. I have found that this type of deep breathing, done 10 or 15 times, starts the cycle of relaxation and release of tension. {As a side note, I use this frequently when faced with
stressful situations, such as driving in heavy traffic. You can easily do this, keeping your eyes on the road at all times.} To aid in this process, many people prefer quietly repeating a special word that has meaning to them. Having spent much time in Asia, I chose one that I learned while studying there. A key point to remember about meditation is that, by going through the process, one insulates him or herself from everyday problems and nagging worries. Like most other things in life, one gets better with concentration and practice. At this point, let’s make one thing clear. I do not claim to be a meditation expert, just another person who found comfort and inner peace through self-learning and lots of practice. So…what are you waiting for? Start hunting for your quiet space now. You will find it very rewarding, with each session better than the previous one. Best of luck on your journey.

Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District’s John F. Kennedy High School recently celebrated the achievement of four graduating seniors as Finalists in the 63rd Annual National Merit Scholarship Competition. The students - Kevin Huang, Ruoxin Lu, Matthew Sala and Alex Stepansky - are among just 15,000 students in the nation being considered for approximately 7,500
awards worth a total of more than $32 million. The National Merit® Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. Every year, approximately 1.6 million juniors from more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/
National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT), which serves as the initial screening process of the competition. The nationwide pool of finalists, representing less than one percent of high school seniors in the U.S., are chosen on a state-representational basis, dependent upon the state’s proportion of total graduating seniors in the nation.

The Sarah Grace Foundation for Children With Cancer Inc. will host its 15th annual Night of Laughter with a return to a familiar location. This popular fundraiser will be held at the Milleridge Cottage in Jericho on Friday, April 13th at 7 p.m. The Night of Laughter is the premier fundraiser for the foundation, and to date it has generated tens of thousands of dollars to help children at pediatric cancer centers throughout the region. The organization is named in honor of Sarah Grace Weippert, who lost her battle with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2002 at the age of 12. The following year, her parents, Matthew and Marissa Weippert, established the foundation with a goal of improving the quality of life of children with cancer, and to provide comfort and support to their families. Comedian Rick Morgan, who has performed in Atlantic City and at Caroline’s New York City, returns as the host and opening act. This year’s slate of comedians includes Rhonda Hansome who has appeared on “Saturday Night Live” and “Louie;” Ron Tobin, a national touring star from “My Mother is Italian, My
Father is Jewish and I’m in Therapy;” Chipps Cooney, a finalist on “America’s Got Talent;” and Mike Keegan who has appeared at the Borgatta and the Boston Comedy Festival. Although the Night of Laughter benefits children, it is for mature audiences only. The cost of $85 per person includes entertainment, dinner, beer, wine, soda, coffee and dessert. There will be numerous raffles including four Walt Disney World park passes, TD Bank Visa Gift Cards, as well as a 50/50/50 with even prizes for three winners. Raffle books, which include these grand prizes, are available at a pre-show discount of $25 per book. Tickets for the event and raffle books must be purchased in advance. A Chinese auction will include prizes such as restaurant gift certificates, lottery scratch-off tickets, baskets of cheer, a bicycle and more. Raffle tickets for these prizes, which are generously donated by businesses and individuals, are available the night of the fundraiser. The Sarah Grace Foundation provides financial aid for families, holiday parties and
activities for children, meal and transportation allowances, toys and games, sponsored outings, and funeral expenses. In the past year, it has increased its book collection Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center and Nassau University Medical Center. The foundation also provided about 3,500 toys during the most recent holiday season for children in more than a half-dozen area hospitals. “Childhood cancer is no laughing matter,” Matthew Weippert said. “These brave children fight every day for their lives, and we want to make their ordeal a little easier. We must also never forget the struggles their families face and the sacrifices they make. Family Fishing Festival The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (State Parks) will hold their annual Spring Family Fishing Festival on Saturday, April 7th, at Belmont Lake State Park. Additional sponsors for the fishing festival include the Natural Heritage Trust, the Fisherman Magazine, Renewal by Andersen, Suez Water, Dick’s Sporting Goods and radio stations 106.1 WBLI and 102.3 WBAB. “Freshwater fishing is an activity the whole family can enjoy, especially on Long Island,” Regional Director Carrie M. Gallagher said. “The spring fishing festival at Belmont Lake State Park is an excellent way to kick off the fishing season and introduce your family to the sport with no license needed to participate. At this festival, you can learn about freshwater fishing opportunities on Long Island and local fishing clubs, try your hand at fishing for trout, and the kids can participate in the casting contest and other fun activities.” Festival activities begin at 10 a.m., and are provided free of charge. Activities include open fishing, fishing instruction, fly casting demonstrations, and fish cleaning services. DEC and local fishing clubs will also set up information displays. Loaner rods and free bait will be available to participants throughout the day. As the supply of loaner rods is limited, participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing tackle if possible. Children’s activities include the “Spring Fling” casting contest, as well as hands-on educational displays by the DEC’s Education Unit. Children participating in the casting
contest will have a chance to win some great prizes supplied by DEC’s I FISH NY Program and The Natural Heritage Trust. Governor Cuomo has expanded recreational opportunities of residents and tourists, positioning New York State as a recreation destination, connecting communities to state lands, and improving the quality of life. Governor Cuomo’s NY Open for Fishing and Hunting Initiative is an effort to improve recreational opportunities for sportsmen and women and to boost tourism activities throughout the state. This includes streamlining fishing and hunting licenses, reducing license fees, improving access for fishing, and increasing hunting opportunities in the state. In support of this initiative, $10 million in NY Works funding has been dedicated to fish hatchery repairs and 50 new land and water access projects such as boat launches, hunting blinds, trails, and parking areas. The Spring Fishing Festival has been designated a Free Fishing Event, so the freshwater fishing license requirement for anglers age 16 and older has been suspended for this event only. After 4 p.m., anglers will need a valid NYS freshwater fishing license to legally fish. The festival highlights DEC’s spring (March and April) trout stocking program in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Prior to the festival, Belmont Lake will be stocked with close to 1,000 brown, brook and rainbow trout by DEC. Additional brook and rainbow trout will be stocked by State Parks. Upper Twin Pond in Wantagh, Oyster Bay Mill Pond, Massapequa Creek and Reservoir, along with 17 other Long Island lakes will also be stocked with
trout by DEC, providing excellent prospects for spring fishing in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. To further encourage fishing, Governor Cuomo signed legislation in 2012 expanding the opportunity for free fishing clinics, allowing more New Yorkers to experience fishing for the first time by enabling DEC to increase the number of free clinics that can be held throughout the state. The Free Fishing Days program began in 1991 to allow all people the opportunity to sample the incredible fishing New York has to offer. This event will be held rain or shine. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that the Town is seeking counselors for its Town of Oyster Bay Summer Recreation Program. The six week program provides a rewarding employment experience for counselors as they work with children and make a difference. “This summer job is ideal for residents age 16 or older who are looking to build their resume. Our summer recreation counselors get real-world experience while making a difference in the lives of
others,” said Supervisor Saladino. Applicants must be available for the duration of the program, which runs from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday from June 25th through August 10th. Nassau County Legislator Rose Marie Walker honored Christine Auer for her volunteer service at the 2018 Nassau County Legislature Trailblazers Awards Presentation. Christine personifies the kind and giving spirit of a volunteer. She has taught Religious Education at St. Martins of Tours and volunteered to make up the booklets for their funeral masses. When she saw a need arise, she went on to become a Eucharistic Minister and served at funeral masses and gave out communion to patients at Mid-Island Hospital. Because her son is a volunteer firefighter in
Bethpage, she decided to join the Ladies Auxiliary. She has served on the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee for the past two years. Christine is a longtime member of the Joey Foundation, which raises monies to help children in need. In 2012, when approached to be a charter member of Bethpage Central Park Kiwanis, she dove right in. Starting a new club is never easy, but Christine was one of the key members who took part in making this club a reality. She became a member of Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center Foundation Board, where she helps to raise funds for the Pediatric
Trauma Center at Cohen Children’s Hospital. Upon touring the center, she decided that raising money was not enough. She became a volunteer in the Pediatric ICU where she relieves parents at meal time and offers love and hugs to their children when needed. When Bethpage Kiwanis decided to sponsor an Aktion Club for adults with special needs, Christine was on board. She became the Club Advisor and meets with member of the ACLD Bridges Program in Farmingdale several times a month. As if all of this was not enough, Christine volunteered with the Caribbean Tourism Organization to help Caribbean Islands that were devastated from hurricanes. Christine was raised in Hicksville by her wonderful parents, John and Dorothy DiSanto, who currently live with her in Bethpage, where she has lived for 44 years. She and her late husband Ray raised their two amazing children, Keri and Michael in Bethpage and she says she will continue to help families and children of this caring community.

Imbroto announces that residents interested in enjoying time on the water can now store their canoe, kayak or dinghy in racks conveniently located at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park & Beach in Oyster Bay and at the Harry Tappen Beach, Pool and Marina in Glenwood Landing. “These two locations provide outstanding access to our beautiful waterways on the north shore,” Councilman Imbroto said. “Canoes, kayaks and dinghies give outdoor
enthusiasts a unique opportunity to navigate and closely explore the harbors and its serene coves and tributaries. The nearby racks make the process easy for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy this leisure activity for the entire season, which begins April 1st.” Applications to rent rack space are available at the Parks Department’s Office of Beaches, located in Town Hall South, located at 977 Hicksville Road in Massapequa. Prices for the season are $150 for residents and $300 for non-residents. Rentals
begin March 1st, 2018. The season begins April 1st and extends through December 31st, 2018. Two kayaks can be placed in a rack. Honoring the Victims The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District’s Howard B. Mattlin Middle School PTA recently sent a banner to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School to stand in solidarity with the victims and families of the tragedy in Parkland, Florida. The banner, which was placed on a table in the lunch room, was signed by ore than 200 fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students, taking the opportunity to sign and write thoughtful messages on the banner during their respective lunch periods.
“Our District mourns with the victims and families of Stoneman Douglas High School and the Parkland community,” said Dr. Lorna R. Lewis, Superintendent of Schools. “When tragedy strikes at one school, the shockwaves reverberate through the entire community of learning institutions across the nation. It is our duty to support one another through these trying times and show our support in every way possible. We are inspired by our wonderful PTA members who continue to inspire
a sense of compassion, understanding and worldliness throughout our entire student body.” PTA members and District officials packaged and shipped the banner to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School just in time to commemorate the school’s first day back in session after the tragedy. The banner was presented to community members at a recent Board of Education meeting prior to shipping the package to the Florida high school.
