The Charity of the Month for March is: Birthday Wishes!
Birthday Wishes is an organization whose mission is to provide birthday parties to children experiencing homelessness. They improve and empower the lives of homeless children and their families by providing joy, play and hope through the magic of a birthday party.
Birthday Wishes of Long Island began having parties in only one shelter. Today they work with 80 shelters/transitional housing programs in Nassau and Suffolk counties, and each month they give more than 120 children a birthday celebration! Every birthday child receives supplies to have a party with all the children that live in the shelter such as; juice boxes, cake or cupcakes, candles, decorations, paper goods and a wonderful bag of presents to open! Birthday Wishes serves children ages 1-19.
As teens are their fastest growing demographic that they serve, they are always in need of teen gifts. They are currently looking for gifts for children of the ages 14-19. They love to throw birthday parties for the children they serve, which reflects a birthday party that would be thrown for any child anywhere. Therefore, please make sure your donations are brand new only! The Mercy Inn ~ Wyandanch The Mercy Inn is a wonderful soup kitchen, located at 17 South 20th Street in Wyandanch. They serve hot meals from 12-1PM Monday-Friday and they also prepare a take home bag for each of their guests, consisting of two sandwhiches, a drink and a snack. No one every leaves their soup kitchen hungry. They serve an average of 110 people daily and they operate solely on donations. Their volunteers are extremely dedicated and hardworking people. Proudly Serving The Community Since 1953! In celebration of Dr. Seuss’ recent birthday, elementary schools in the Hicksville School District held fun, educational activities that paid homage to the works of the famous children’s author while promoting literacy and other subjects in a fun way. East Street Elementary School held a week of activities that included a “Crazy Hat Day” and a “Wacky Hair Day,” with many students replicating the hairdos of the famous Dr. Seuss Who characters. Students enjoyed reading Dr. Seuss books throughout the week in accordance with different themes of the day. Students in Christine Moir’s fourth-grade class at Old Country Road Elementary School enjoyed some green eggs and ham and assorted colored goldfish snacks while reading “Green Eggs and Ham” and “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue
Fish.” They also made Oobleck (based on the book “Bartholomew and the Oobleck”) from scratch and played a ball toss game using handmade, Cat in the Hat red and
white hats for the basket. Students honed their math (graphing and fractions), science (states of matter) and literacy skills through these activities, and had fun.
Every year schools throughout the country coordinate fun, Dr. Seussthemed activities in accordance with Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 2.

Michael Buble Leans in with Love and Laughter By Allison Kugel The year 2019 marks a boon of professional and personal successes for multi-Grammy award winning singer and songwriter, Michael Buble. His family’s much publicized heartbreak as they fought for their son Noah, as he battled pediatric liver cancer, set Buble on a new course of humility which was evident throughout our conversation. Now, with Noah’s health much improved, Michael Buble has re-emerged with a new album, aptly titled Love (or simply, the heart emoji) on which he collaborated with mega-music producer, David Foster; a sold-out worldwide tour and his seventh upcoming musical television special, set to air on NBC on March 20th. My interview with Michael Buble is one of his most authentic and reflective, to date. We cover the subjects of parenthood, success, spirituality, love, humor, and of course, the music.
Michael Buble: That’s great. He’s your boyfriend. It sounds so strange to say that, and whenever I say that people are like, “That sounds weird,” but it’s not. Obviously, not in that way, but it is romantic. He’s going to love you forever. You’ll be the love of his life and he’s the love of your life. Allison Kugel: I’m banking on it. Michael Buble: I love my boys and
Allison Kugel: I’ll tell you what I have always found fascinating about you, and I’m a fan of music from earlier times. I’m forever listening to music from the 1940s, 50s and 60s. What’s so interesting about you is that you came along in the very early 2000s when everything was hip hop, and rap/ rock. What made you believe that you could even break through as somebody who was crooning these songs from a bygone era? Michael Buble: It was probably stupidity (laughs). I mean, thinking that I might have success was probably naiveté. But honest to God, I think I was blinded by the love of the music. And by the way, I love all kinds of music. I love rock, R & B and rap. For me, if it’s good, it’s good. It doesn’t matter who did it or where it came from. I hoped that I could trust my instincts. Allison Kugel: I’ve been listening to this author and speaker named Dr. Joe Dispenza. He studies the patterns of the human brain and how we create our own reality. He essentially talks about how anybody who has ever achieved something great, has been able to believe in a vision and believe in a life for themselves that they couldn’t yet perceive with their physical senses. When I read that you, from the age of two, knew you were going to be a singer, slept with your bible at night and prayed for it, and you held strong to that vision for all of those years before it actually materialized in your life, I put you in that great category. Does that make sense? Michael Buble: Yeah, it does. There is a Canadian writer [Malcolm Gladwell], he wrote a book called The Outliers. His premise was that to truly become great at something, you need to put in ten thousand hours of work. And if you find anyone who’s become truly great at what they do, they have put in that amount of time. There are little parts of what you were talking about that mix with the practical application of doing things enough and focusing enough. You learn by osmosis and your experience helps you to grow. Then by the time you get your opportunity, you’re ready. I think that probably had a lot to do with it for me. Number one, I loved it. I had a passion for the music and the songs. But I did the work; I practiced, I sang, and I studied. I took it all in and digested it as much as possible. I
get what you’re saying. You’re talking about visualizing. I have a friend who tells me often that he used to walk down the street and say to himself, “I have a million dollars.” Not, “I want a million dollars,” but, “I have a million dollars; I am successful.” Allison Kugel: Knowing everything you now know about the music industry, about the odds, about everything you’re aware of; if you had to start from square one, would you have the courage to do it all over again? Michael Buble: No. Allison Kugel: You don’t think so? Michael Buble: I don’t think so. Allison Kugel: Wow. Well thank God that’s not an option! Michael Buble: It’s a hard question, because reality doesn’t come into it. I came home yesterday with my wife and we had to take our son to his checkup, the scans and everything (Buble is talking about his son Noah, who is currently in remission from pediatric liver cancer). We take him every three months for checkups, and it’s really scary. My wife and I actually talked about this and we said, “My God, look at what we did.” She was twenty-three and I was thirty-two. We met in Argentina and fell in love. Everyone told us it was impossible. They told us not to do it, because of the whole long-distance relationship thing. And we did it. We got married. Everyone said, “That’s crazy. That’s not going to work. And whatever you do, don’t have kids, because that’ll be murder.” And then we had kids. And then there’s what happened to our family (referencing son Noah’s cancer diagnosis). One of the first things a doctor told me at one of the hospitals we’d gone to, was to stay strong and help each other through this. A friend of ours, when we had asked why the doctors keep telling us that, this friend who works with families going through things like this, said, that something like 92% of couples who go through this… Allison Kugel: Get divorced… Michael Buble: Get divorced. And many of the 8% who don’t, have [more] children. And of course, my wife and I thought here we are with our beautiful daughter. We were in the car yesterday and I looked at her and said, “Would you do it all over again?” She then answered, “Of course I would do it all over again. I wouldn’t want anything different. You guys are the greatest joy of my life.” But then my question to her was, “But would you be brave enough to do it all over again?” And then she said, “I
don’t know.” And I would have to say the same thing. I don’t know. Allison Kugel: Any of us could say that. It’s like when you bring your newborn baby home from the hospital, and the thought that goes through your mind is that you are going to give this kid a perfect existence, and you’re going to shelter him or her from any pain or discomfort. And then life happens, and don’t have the power to completely shield them from the pain and discomfort of life. Michael Buble: And you don’t have the power to shield them from yourself. For sure, I thought to myself, “He’s going to be better than I am!” I am so flawed. I’m so flawed and so impatient, and there are so many things about me that I don’t like or that I wish I could improve on. And then you go, “Oh my God, he’s acting exactly like me.” Allison Kugel: When you took that hiatus to deal with your son’s health, did you think that could be it for your music career? Michael Buble: Yeah. Allison Kugel: What was the impetus for you to come back? Michael Buble: He was better. We didn’t know how it was going to turn out. My heart was broken, I don’t know. It wasn’t that I ever fell out of love with music. I just didn’t know if I had it in me to go out there and be joyful. It just wasn’t something I could turn on. Allison Kugel: And you returned with an album dedicated to love. The album’s title is a heart emoji, and features some of the most beautiful love songs. Is that because you were so filled with love and gratitude for your son’s healing? Michael Buble: It’s because I was in a bubble, looking out at the world,
and I saw a lot of negative things happening around the world. I realized that I had an opportunity to put beautiful things out there. Allison Kugel: What do you think you are here in this life as Michael Buble to learn and to teach? Michael Buble: Listen, I don’t know yet. I’m still learning a lot. What scares me is I’ve learned so much more in the past five years than I had in all my previous years, combined. The reason I am reticent to give you an answer is because I can’t imagine what I will learn in another five. I have my faith and I try never to put it in people’s faces, because there’s a lot of people who don’t believe the same things I do, and that’s okay. I can keep it simple and say I don’t know what there is or what there isn’t, but I feel in some way we are all connected. I know that each one of us gets to play a part in bringing goodness and humanity into the world. I feel like, sometimes, because of the job I have, it can be magnified. If I can do that as best as I can, that can be my legacy. You probably hear stories like this all the time, but when my son was a newborn, I had a routine with him every night, where before I put him down in his crib, I would pick him up in my arms and slow dance with him to your music. When I hear Home or Quando Quando Quando, I just lose it, because I think back to that beautiful time.
I’m close with my boys, but it’s not the same as with my daughter. Everyone told me it would be different, and I was like, “No, no it won’t be.” And it’s different. She looks at me with those big blue eyes and I’m toast.

A chef by profession, Carolyn S. of Hicksville is always playing in her kitchen, figuring out how to whip up healthier versions of some of her exotic, Asian-fusion favorites.
2 large carrots, spiral sliced 1 red bell pepper, spiral sliced 1/4 cup green onions, diced chopped peanuts as a garnish Canola vegetable oil on-hand

Preparation Add garlic, ginger, peanut butter, lime juice and zest, soy sauce and red pepper flakes to a small bowl and mix together. To a large frying pan, add your canola oil on high heat. Add zucchini, carrots and bell peppers to the pan, and cook until just wilted, 3-4 minutes, stirring occassionally.
What You Will Need 1 clove garlic minced 2 tsps fresh ginger minced 4 tbps peanut butter 1 lime, zested and juiced 2 tbps soy sauce 1/4 tsps red pepper flakes 2 tbps coconut oil 2 cups chicken breast, cooked and shredded 3 zucchini, spiral sliced

Regal Eagle Rampage The Bethpage Union Free School District and the Bethpage High School robotics team, the Regal Eagles, hosted the second annual Regal Eagle Rampage: Week 0 Event on February 17th. The Regal Eagles welcomed other teams from the region to the school’s gymnasium for the event, which allows calibration and match practice to gain a sense of
how each team’s robot will perform in the upcoming regionals. It preceded the mandatory “stop build” deadline of February 19th. A robotics field was built inside the gymnasium, with the same dimensions that teams will face during upcoming regional competition challenges called “Deep Space.” The district extends a special thanks to the custodial engineers, facilities
and maintenance staff, technicians, advisors, parents and volunteers for their help in creating the field. The Regal Eagles will participate in the School Business Partnerships of Long Island Regional at Hofstra University on March 26th. The New York City Regional is scheduled for the weekend of April 5th.

Long Island’s Top Arts High School Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) invites all Nassau & Suffolk County students with artistic talent, passion and ambition to an Open House on Saturday, April 13 from 11a.m.- 2 p.m. Prospective students from across Long Island are welcome to tour the campus at 239 Cold Spring Road in Syosset to experience classes focused on each area of the visual and performing arts. Attendees can also get information about the arts school’s summer program, the Summer Arts Academy, offered this year through a new partnership with Hofstra University. Attendees can join a theater improvisation skit, sketch in an art class, take a dance class, listen to a musical performance and participate in much more to get better acquainted with LIHSA. During the Open House, parents of prospective students will also have the opportunity to speak with faculty, guidance professionals, current parents and students. LIHSA offers specialized training and instruction to students interested in pursuing careers in theatre, music, filmmaking, dance, special
effects, fine arts and digital media. As part of their professional-level training, students regularly receive one-on-one access to experienced professionals working in the industry. The fun-loving 12 year old was a student at Hicksville Middle School and loved crafts and music. She never lost her smile throughout her fight, which included months of chemotherapy followed by cranial and total body irradiation in preparation for a bone marrow transplant from her younger brother, James. The following year, Sarah’s parents established the foundation, a nonprofit corporation, to improve the quality of life for children with cancer, and to provide comfort and support to their families. Donations provide numerous means of financial aid for families including for meals,
transportation, heating and funeral expenses. In the past year, the foundation provided ball game outing tickets, distributed 750 Halloween goodie bags to pediatric cancer patients in hospitals, sponsored a holiday party at Cohen’s Children’s Hospital and distributed toys at Christmas to seven area hospitals, shipped personalized gift packages to individual families and provided televisions to inpatients undergoing lengthy treatment stays at Maimonides Pediatric cancer center. It has also continued its Sarah’s Angels book donations, Chemo Duck program and Cohen’s Bead Room. The Sarah Grace Foundation was a sponsor for Cohen’s Pediatric Cancer Survivorship Day in September and sponsored t-shirts for the siblings of survivors. “Pediatric cancer is something no child or family should have to deal with,” said Matthew Weippert. “During difficult times for these families, the Sarah Grace Foundation provides support through a variety of initiatives that are possible because of our generous supporters.” Visit www. thesarahgracefoundation. org.

They say that laughter is the best medicine, and the Sarah Grace Foundation for Children With Cancer Inc. has proven that time and time again with its highly popular comedy night. The 16th annual Night of Laughter will be held at the Milleridge Cottage in Jericho on Friday, April 12 at 7 p.m. In the previous 15 years, the organization has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for children battling cancer and other serious illnesses. The organization was founded in 2003 by Matt and Marissa Weippert in honor of their daughter, Sarah Grace Weippert. Rick Morgan, who has appeared at several comedy clubs including Caroline’s, returns as the show’s host. He will be followed by a dynamic quartet of comics including D.B. Frick, who has written for Conan O’Brien and has performed his standup routines from coast to coast. Also appearing will be magician extraordinaire Harry Mandel, experienced comedian Eddie Gambino and Broadway Comedy Club regular Stacy Kendro. I Miss You Friend I am suddenly struck with a memory of an old friend who passed away in 2007 from Cystic Fibrosis. She took up residence at the forefront of my mind just as I had the thought, “Okay, time to write this week’s column.” I met Brenna in 1991 at a theatre arts summer camp in upstate New York. Five of us girls shared a dorm that summer, and one of my roommates was an Irish Catholic girl from New Hampshire, named Brenna. We were the same age and both loved acting and the arts, but culturally we were worlds apart. I, a Jewish girl from Long Island with olive skin and dark curly hair, was fascinated with her strawberry blonde pin straight hair, bright green eyes and rosy complexion. She also had a husky-yet-feminine voice (think vintage Kathleen Turner). Brenna was a true force of nature; the kind of person you never forget once she’s touched your life. Our friendship developed at summer camp but lasted for years afterwards. I made trips to visit her and her family in New Hampshire and she made a
couple of trips to New York City where we would go to places like FAO Schwartz, her favorite Irish pub and St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Brenna was born with Cystic Fibrosis (or CF, as it is known in the Cystic Fibrosis community), but she was so dynamically alive that I couldn’t conceive of her succumbing to her illness. She never let her disease define or diminish her. In fact, shortly after marrying at the age of twenty-five she wanted to have a baby. Brenna’s doctor warned her against it. I’ll never forget her recounting the story to me after she’d given birth to her son, Harrison. “My doctors said, ‘there’s no way you’re going to be able to get through nine months of pregnancy and childbirth,’ and I said, ‘oh, no? watch me!’” That was Brenna. She knew she was on limited time, and therefore she was determined to live her life with zest, and to make every day count. At some point she and I lost touch, and in 2012 I decided to Google my old friend to reconnect. What I came across
was a memorial website set up in her honor. What I hadn’t known throughout our friendship (or perhaps hadn’t wanted to) was that the life expectancy for CF patients is typically 30 years. Brenna had lived to the age of 32. I am in touch with Brenna’s sister, Meghan, and her widower, Jason, to this day. I get to watch Brenna’s son grow up through Facebook photos and videos as he is surrounded by loving extended family. Beyond that, I love to read and re-read Brenna’s favorite poem, The Station, by Robert J. Hastings. It reminds me so much of her. Here is my favorite passage from that poem: “So stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles. Instead, swim more rivers, climb more mountains, kiss more babies, count more stars. Laugh more and cry less. Go barefoot oftener. Eat more ice cream. Ride more merry-go-rounds. Watch more sunsets. Life must be lived as we go along. The Station will come soon enough.” I miss you friend.
One may wonder why I am discussing the lowly blowfish. To begin, let’s clarify what a blowfish is. it is one of the scavengers of the sea. Generally growing to about 6 inches in length, it has very little commercial value. The meat is not featured in restaurants, and that type of fish is called a “bottom-feeder” since it usually stays on the bottom of the bays and inlets in moderate climate areas. About the only real value to fisherman is to cut them up and use the meat for “chumming.” By throwing the bits and pieces into the water, it is hoped that it will attract larger fish to the boat. The Puff Adder (mentioned in an earlier column) is one of the most lethal snakes in the world, which puffs its entire head up just before it strikes. It makes a hissing sound, hoping to frighten away a predator. Though not as dramatic, the blowfish utilizes the same technique. After it’s caught, while holding the body in one hand, you only need to scratch its belly and immediately it’s stomach blows up to at least three times in size. How do I
know this? As a kid growing up in the Rockaways, I fished almost every day and caught countless blowfish each summer. Leaving snakes and fish aside, human beings follow the same pattern. Although some of my readers might disagree with me, I refer you to a recent article published by both the New York Times and World Street Journal. It referred to the recent failed Singapore meeting between President Trump and Kim Jong-un. Both men had an agenda, but they both (to varying degrees) did not sufficiently plan for the difficult contingencies that must be ironed out in advance of a formal agreement. As a result, all of this turned out to be a ‘lose-lose” situation for both parties concerned. Worse yet, it paved the way for both countries to now act in a negative fashion. North Korea was prepared to give up a small portion of its nuclear facilities in exchange for a removal of many tariffs now in place. From our President’s point of view, it was “all or nothing,” meaning North Korea had to give up all nuclear

The Plight of the Misunderstood Blowfish facilities in order to get a reduction in tariffs. As history has shown, the entire deal fell through right before a planned luncheon was being held to celebrate a victory for both sides. It’s always easy to have “Monday morning critiques,” but here’s a quick take on how to possibly avoid falling into that trap. The key here is planning. It involves looking at every aspect of the coming meeting and arriving at a key objective to be reached. If that is not possible, go for the secondary objective. Failure (or not reaching any objective) is to be avoided at all costs. I strive in each of my articles to turn the learning into examples of real life situations. A good example is the classroom at one of the universities that I teach at. Prior to the start of the semester, I obtain a confidential record of each student’s grades from previous classes. By studying each one I get a good idea of what the class learning average is, and where some students may need extra help. Prior to the start of the first class, I get to my room early and personally
greet each student. I have learned from many previous classes that students appreciate that small bit of personalization and enjoyed knowing that the professor really cared. Backing up the crucial planning function is the need for flexibility. Many times, planning runs into trouble when the negotiator will not budge, and lines of communication harden. A good example is the fate of the dinosaur. These giant creatures had a brain only the size of a pea. As a result, when the ice age emerged they did not have enough sense to migrate. In summary, do not be afraid when encountering bullies in any situation. They may not hiss before acting, but just be aware that they could exhibit narrowing of eyes trying to out-stare you with the tight folding of arms and other related body language. Make sure you have properly planned for the meeting and know both your primary and secondary objectives. Lastly, back up your planning with a high degree of flexibility. Peace.
