In Search Of Sunsets By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There’s a saying that goes, “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.” The goal, as I see it, is to capture as many of these moments as possible and preserve them in your memory. For me, this process is only enhanced by my love of photography. Sure, there’s something to be said for stepping back and simply observing the events before you, minus the ever-present haze of technology and gadgets galore. However, I feel
that photos help to string together the missing pieces, forming a minidocumentary of sorts of each of our lives. One of my favorite pursuits has always been capturing the perfect sunrise or sunset, that moment when all the colors burst forth in a radiant display of supernatural glory. It is easy to miss the beauty which surrounds us on a daily basis, so caught up are we in our own virtual worlds. Around every corner, there are lines and angles and reflections of light, which produce some of the most
brilliant visuals. Flowers, butterflies, candid shots of people in their element… open your eyes and you will see photo opps everywhere. Add to that the magic of Photoshop and Instagram, and the possibilities for manipulation of an ordinary photo into a masterpiece are endless. Of course, snap a truly spectacular shot and there may be #nofilterneeded! As we gingerly take our first steps into the Spring season, take a deep breath, look around and allow yourself to be moved. And make sure you have your camera handy.

Understanding The Circle Of Life
Last Sunday, as my family was gathering for spaghetti and meatballs, we received a phone call from my grandmother. She sounded noticeably different. We could tell that something was wrong because her voice was shaky, and she did not offer the usual pleasantries. After a few minutes of crying, she told us that her cat had passed away. She loved that cat for the twenty-something years that it was around, and during the last few days, she could sense that something was wrong. I anticipated that she would be inconsolable,
because she truly cared about her precious feline. We were devastated as well, until we got another call. It was my uncle. He had great news. His wife was pregnant and they were expecting a baby. We never expected him to have kids, even though he seemed to love them. It was a welcomed shock to us, and even more needed for my grandmother. She had lost a cat, but had also potentially gained a grandchild. It seemed as if this baby was coming to fill and exceed the gap left by the animal’s passing. Essentially, the point that I am trying to make
is that when everything seems to be going wrong, greatness fills the void. With every bad, comes some good. As was the case with my grandmother and her cat, new life is promising to replace the loss of a loved one. Even when it seems that everything is stacked against us, it is comforting to know that it will turn around. We can never dwell on the negative aspects of life, as around every corner is a surprise that has the potential to brighten our day. Life is a cycle of highs and lows, and we should always anticipate the next peak.

Volunteer Recovery Program
ISLAND SPORTS PHYSICAL THERAPY
The American Red Cross has awarded a $599,655 grant to the Health & Welfare Council of Long Island to support a disaster recovery center for nonprofits and volunteers who will help hundreds of homeowners affected by Superstorm Sandy repair their damaged homes. The funding will be used to house 150 volunteers at the new Long Island Disaster Recovery Center on the New York Institute of Technology campus in Central Islip. Without the grant, these volunteers would not be able to access housing while they work to repair 600 Sandy-damaged homes throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties over the year to come. The funding will also be used to coordinate non-profit and volunteer efforts - such as mucking, gutting and debris removal - and operate the disaster recovery and housing facility. The center will serve as the command

HEARING HELP IS AN IMPORTANT DECISION
The Museum of American Armor at Old Bethpage Village Restoration has named Mark Renton its director, placing him in charge of a multi-million dollar collection of operational armor from World War II. The museum is currently under construction and will open this spring, gathering its collection under one roof where it will pay tribute to the American G.I. of every era. Mr. Renton, a Massapequa resident, is a nationally recognized expert on the maintenance, repair and role of historic armor. Typically, his recent duties saw him replace a Sherman tank engine and return the vehicle to running order, restore a rare prewar U.S. Army scout car to operational condition and lead a public discussion on tank tactics during a World War II living history program. This past winter he has been the onsite liaison between the museum and Blumenfeld Development Group, (BDG) of Syosset,

Despite this historically bitter winter, BDG has worked with Pratt Brothers and the construction trades to keep the project on schedule to ensure its opening prior to the 70th anniversary of the June 6th D-Day invasion of Nazi occupied Europe during World War II. “I am honored and humbled to be named as the museum’s director. I have been entrusted with much more than just priceless armor. I have been asked to protect icons that represent American courage and valor. Kindergarten through fifth-graders at Kramer Lane Elementary School in the Bethpage School District were visited by guest author Laurence Pringle. He discussed the writing process with students, spoke about how he generates book
ideas and the importance of research. “I urge you to work reading into your life as much as possible,” Mr. Pringle said. “It will increase your vocabulary and make your writing more mature.” Best known for his nonfiction works about
animals, he also shared with students the rhythm of writing and creating short and long sentences to keep a flow. Arranged by librarian Andrea Swicord, each of the students received a special autographed copy of one of Mr. Pringle’s books.
All-State Athletes With the winter seasons coming to a close, Bethpage High School honored some its top athletes of the season. Five students across three top teams were selected as All-State athletes and competed as top performers in the
county. This included two gymnasts, senior Sarah Ciresi and freshman Alyssa Firth, who are classified as the top two in all of Nassau County for the 2013-2014 season. Under coach Kim Rhatigan, the team was conference champs.
Bowlers Elizabeth Ferraro and Carly Licht were also classified as All-State athletes. Averaging 193 and 196 respectively, the girls both represented Nassau County in the states and the team was also conference champions.

Kids Of Distinction Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto, together with Kids Helping Kids by Kids Way, Inc. co-Founders Robert A.J. Eslick and Philip M. Eslick, announce their co-sponsored Kids of Distinction community service based Scholarship Program for 2014. “The Kids of Distinction Scholarship Program was initiated in an effort to recognize outstanding young people who have been active in exceptional endeavors in their community,” Supervisor Venditto said. At last year’s ceremony, eight exceptional Town of
Oyster Bay youngsters were honored for their commitment to their communities. In celebrating the ten-year anniversary of the Kids of Distinction program the Kids Helping Kids Scholarship Committee will award ten (10) - $2,000 scholarships this year. “The concept of the program is to recognize kids for taking part in activities done on their own initiative,” Philip said. “Last year’s group of winners certainly fit the bill, many going above and beyond the call of duty to help others in their community.”
The Kids of Distinction program focuses on activities participated in outside of school. These activities should have, in some way, benefited the community. “For nine years, we have recognized a diverse group of students who really demonstrated caring and compassion to those around them,” Supervisor Venditto said. Robert added, “We are confident that this year’s scholarship winners will be equally compassionate and worthy of this honor. The Kids Helping Kids academic scholarships greatly help students fund their college
education and related expenses and in these tough economic times every dollar helps.” Nominees will be placed in two categories, those currently in fifth through eighth grade and those in grades nine through 12. The age groups were established so nominees can be evaluated fairly against their peers. Five winners will be selected in each category by a committee organized by Kids Helping Kids. “There are so many wonderful young people living in the Town of Oyster Bay who not only demonstrate academic or
extracurricular skills, but also do a little something extra to help make the world a better place,” Supervisor Venditto said. “We felt it was important to recognize our young residents who involve themselves in voluntary community, charity or civic activities on their own individual initiative.” In addition, Kids Helping Kids by Kids Way Inc. is inviting several past Kids of Distinction scholarship recipients to attend the 2014 ‘Kids of Distinction’ scholarship ceremony in what they are calling What are they doing now? Residents are invited to take part in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Adult Co-Ed Badminton or Adult CoEd Volleyball Programs, according to Town Councilman Joseph G. Pinto. The programs are open to players who are 18 and older and will be held at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center. The volleyball program starts on Saturday, April 5th and will be conducted on Tuesdays from 9 to 10:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m.
The badminton program starts on Thursday, April 10th and will be held on Thursdays and Sundays from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. The programs, which are 12 weeks in duration, are $60 for residents and $70 for non-residents. Proof of residency is required for the discount. “Badminton and volleyball are both excellent forms of aerobic exercise, which can help promote multiple health benefits and longevity,” Councilman Pinto said.
“Along with positive health benefits, I would encourage people to join these coed activities for the social aspect as well.” Councilman Pinto noted that registration for both programs will take place at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center, 167 Broadway in Hicksville, on Tuesday, March 25th from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, March 27th from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, March 29th from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. After these dates, registration
will continue based on availability.
