The Hicksville Public School District Board of Education hosted a Secondary Student and Staff Recognition Ceremony to honor standout members of its middle and high school communities. The program began with musical performances by students starring in the high school’s upcoming theatrical production of Grease, and was followed by the ceremonial certificate distribution. Presentation of the awards were led by Interim Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carl Bonuso, alternating members of the Board of Education, and building principals - Raymond Williams of the high school and Mara Jorisch of the middle school. On March 4th, students at Village Elementary School were treated to a visit from older students who, not too long ago, were students at Village themselves. In a program aimed at creating innerdistrict mentorship, the elementary school welcomed back Syosset High School students that had attended Village before moving on to middle

school. Teachers and administrators were as excited to see the highschool kids as they were to see them, as each student filed into the lobby and received a visitor’s badge that featured their elementary school picture on the front. The teenagers reserved a few minutes to reconnect with their old teachers before heading to their assigned

classrooms and reading to the students. The elementary-aged kids listened intently and asked questions after the reading was over. Some of the students inquired about high school life, schoolwork and what activities they could join when they got there. Photos courtesy of: Syosset School District

Volunteers Needed Anyone interested in protecting and enhancing Tobay Beach can join with fellow volunteers and Town officials at the Annual Tobay Beach Dune Stabilization Project, slated for Saturday, March 28th, at 10 a.m. This environmentally important dune grass planting project helps protect the Town’s fragile beach dunes from erosion. Recent storms, particularly Hurricane Sandy, have had a significant impact upon the dunes and this project goes a long way to shoring these sandy barriers for future generations. The planting of grass is extremely helpful in stabilizing and building dunes because it provides

Fifth-graders at Burns Avenue Elementary School in the Hicksville Public School District volunteered their time after school to provide assistance at a PTAsponsored Blood Drive. As part of the Little Doctors program, the

students dressed up in scrubs, distributed necessary forms, guided donators to their seats and provided them with healthy snacks while waiting. Prior to the drive, the students were also encouraged to recruit family members

Ultimately, all the volunteers feel pride in knowing they have done something tangible to protect the delicate ecosystem of the beach and surrounding areas. More than a thousand volunteers showed up for the event last year and planted more than 230,000 stalks of dune grass. The event will take place at TOBAY Beach, with registration starting at 9:30 a.m. and the plunge to begin at 11:30 a.m.. Student Spotlight HOW TO BE A HERO

SUBMITTED BY: LAURA WALTERS, AGE 15 • LINDENHURST HIGH SCHOOL Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a hero? I know I have. Wouldn’t it be cool to run into a burning building to save a little baby or catch the criminal? We all know the definition of a hero: A courageous person who helps others without thinking of him or herself or the consequences that may follow. Also, everyone under the sun knows heroes are brave, selfless, caring, etc. But, have you ever thought maybe that’s just not enough? How can something so incredibly important to society have such a short definition and description? That’s because it’s wrong. A hero is an ordinary person who can and will go out of his or her way to help, care and solve people’s problems .... basically, anyone. I bet at least one, if not every teacher you had, told you to be kind to one another, and that you never know what someone else is

going through. I just never knew that person would be my best friend. She had some problems. She lives about thirty to forty-five minutes away from me. We didn’t go to the same school, nor have any mutual friends. We met through our parents. I never knew how close I could grow to someone who lived so far. We can talk for hours. Well, when talking for hours, you run out of things to say. When I asked how school was, I knew it was the worst and best thing I could ask. She admitted she constantly felt uncomfortable in school. She was jealous of all her peers’ happiness. Her parents were fighting a lot, she was bullied, and there was also the secret. This secret was one I knew for a long time and promised to keep to this day. Let’s just say it got to her. She became depressed and cut herself. I, being the friend I am, did what

I needed to do. I told. I told my mom to tell her mom to get her to a therapist. What I didn’t do is tell her secret. I never break my promises. I just told her she was getting bullied and cutting. But this, to any parent, is traumatizing. Long story short, it took three years, but I got her through it. But what does this have to do with heroes? Well, now I consider myself a hero. So does my friend. I’ll never forget the day I got the text: thanks for saving my life. Not to be selfish, but what I did took guts and time. I selflessly got my friend through, by far, the roughest time of her life. I think I am a hero. What I’m trying to say is that even the stupidest thing can keep someone from self-harm. Even the happiest of people go through depression. Please be kind to others, and be a hero by simply listening.

That Old Familiar Feeling By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

Take a deep breath. It calms the mind. That’s what they say anyway. Hence, my newfound appreciation for the art of yoga. It forces you to breathe, to meditate, to clear your mind of all unwanted stresses. Breathe in, breathe out. And repeat. It all started when, after 20 years of dancing, I decided that I needed something else to fill my time, to bring me back to that place where I felt like I was in shape, in control and in sync with my surroundings. After long days at work on deadline,

I settled into somewhat of a routine, using the classes to de-stress and unwind. Then came the winter, that vast, endless stretch of bitter cold, spurring the urge to hibernate until the first flowers decided to bloom. Unfortunately, stress doesn’t wait until spring, and so, come March, back to yoga I went. The first few weeks were a bit rough, what with the creaking bones and stiff muscles and, well, just a general laziness and lack of motivation. But, like magic, after getting back into a bit of a routine, there it was – that old familiar feeling of inner peace. For a few minutes anyway.

The key, I suppose, it to find a way to bottle that feeling and be able to call upon it when needed, to apply it to the world beyond my yoga mat. Perhaps that comes with practice. More practice than the once-aweek, sporadic schedule I have assembled for myself. One can only assume. One day at a time. One class at a time. One deep breath at a time. That’s all any of us can focus on in our infinite quest to find that deep, soul-searching sense of meaning to it all. No stress, no judgment, no pressure. Just you, alone with your thoughts. Breathe in, breathe out. And repeat.

followed an assembly that featured Seuss-related stuffed animals and singalongs. At Lee Avenue Elementary School, students and teachers wore red and white high hats made famous by one of Dr. Seuss’ characters, the Cat in the Hat. As part of a school wide effort, a large version of the book was crafted and its pages were colored and designed by

Proud To Celebrate

During the week of March 2nd, The Hebrew Academy of Nassau County in Plainview is proud to celebrate 100 Days of School! The Kindergarten class wrote a book called “Wishes for 100,” looked for patterns in the hundreds chart, made necklaces counting out groups of 10 with cheerios and fruit loops, counted by 10’s and made special 100 day hats, and shared our 100 collections with our friends.

The festivities will continue even though the day has passed. They look forward to estimating how much popcorn 100 kernels of popcorn will make, and estimating the length of 100 unifix cubes. They will also be putting together a 100 piece puzzle as a class. The second grade celebrated 100 days of school in their Hebrew class. 100 in Hebrew is “mey-ah.” They made “mishkafei meyah,” 100 glasses and discussed the letter “mem” that is

connected to our cultural holiday of Purim. They found many examples of the letter “mem” such as megillah (our Purim story), mishloach manot (sending food gifts), matanot l’evyonim (giving money to the poor), Mordechai, mishteh (celebratory meal), mi’siba (party), and so many more. School Principal Rabbi Kalman Fogel said, “I am proud of the way our teachers are integrating math and Hebrew into every day situations.”

THIRD PRIZE - The Museum of American Armor at Old Bethpage Village Restoration has awarded over $10,000 in scholarships to scouts from throughout Nassau County who participated in the museum’s Heritage Essay program in cooperation with Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano and the Theodore Roosevelt Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Presented with a Third Place scholarship award of $2,000 was Joseph Evans of Bethpage.

Merit Finalist Bethpage High School senior Harshil Garg has been named a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program for 2015. Finalists represent the top .01 percent of high school seniors nationwide who took the PSAT/ NMSQT, which has a total of 1.5 million entrants.

In addition to this latest recognition, Harshil is a National AP Scholar and is currently ranked fifth in the county for Mathletes. He also plays the violin, is a member of the school’s robotics team and conducts cancer research at the Cold Spring Harbor lab. Harshil will be notified
