T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-proﬁt organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true. Each week for the remaining weeks this month, I will feature wishes that were granted right here on Long Island, starting with Kathy W. Dorothy Delia is an 87 year old resident of West Babylon. She worked and volunteered for the Salvation Army in Ridegewood and Queens for over 20 years. Prior to COVID, she was very involved in her church by coordinating the prayer chain, greeting worshippers and helping at fundraisers and events. Dorothy desperately needed dental work, but because she lives on a ﬁxed income, she could not afford it on her own. She had been losing teeth and could only eat soft foods. She wished for dental work, which was granted! In February 2020, she got a new healthy smile! Many seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable

conditions. Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Town Seeks Volunteers for March 27th Dune Day at TOBAY Beach Social-Distanced Event Protects Environment

Residents who love visiting the beach and want to help protect the shoreline can join Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and members of the Town Board at the Towns’ annual Dune Day, scheduled for Saturday, March 27th at TOBAY

Beach. The event begins at 10 a.m. by the dunes at TOBAY. Supervisor Saladino stated, “The Dune Stabilization Project brings together residents of all ages in an effort to protect and preserve our beautiful shoreline and environment by planting

stalks of dune grass. This year, our event takes a social-distanced approach as volunteers must wear a mask and remain socially distant for the duration of the event.” The Dune Stabilization Project helps preserve our beach and barrier

island for future generations, Volunteers work alongside Town officials and crews, as well as residents from across the Town who share an interest in helping preserve TOBAY Beach. Dunes along our south shore continue

to face environmentally damaging storms that have a significant impact on the beach. Statistics indicate that the planting of dune grass provides a natural shield that is perfect for withstanding storm surges and high winds. Residents interested

Many St. Patrick’s Day Traditions Are Not From Ireland

St. Patrick’s Day is made special by various traditions. Everything from dyeing major cities’ rivers green to parades to enjoying green foods has become part of the pageantry of St. Patrick’s Day. The next time you

raise a green beer to your lips, you may wonder which traditions are authentically Irish and which ones were created by regions with an abundance of Irish emigrants. Surprisingly, many seemingly Irish traditions likely began

elsewhere. First parade It would be accurate to assume that various elements associated with St. Patrick’s Day began where St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, once resided, including the first St. Patrick’s Day parade. However, some of the first parades held in St. Patrick’s honor took place in two North American cities, New York and Boston, that had high numbers of Irish immigrants, but historians say the first ever St. Patrick’s Day parade was actually held in St. Augustine, Florida in 1601, a year after gunfire blasts were used to honor the saint. The parade may have been at the request of an Irish priest living there at the time. Corned beef and cabbage What would St. Patrick’s Day be without an authentic meal of corned beef and cabbage? This dish is not so authentic after all, and actually is an American innovation. Ham and cabbage was widely eaten in Ireland, but corned beef was a cheaper alternative found in America by immigrants. Therefore, corned beef became a staple of poor Irish immigrants living in lower Manhattan. The salted meat was boiled three times to remove some of the brine and make it palatable.

Green beer Green beer is not an Irish custom, but an American one. The most common beer consumed in Ireland is Guinness, which is dark brown to black in color, making green dye useless in Irish pubs since it would be largely invisible in the stout. Golf tournaments One would not associate golf with St. Patrick’s Day unless they reside in Nome, Alaska. Golf is a popular Irish pastime,

and each year the Bering Sea Ice Classic Golf Tournament takes place right around St. Patrick’s Day. Bright green golf balls are used, and breaks are factored in between holes to warm up at local bars. Wearing green According to The Christian Science Monitor, individuals in the United States started wearing green to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in the early 1700s. They believed it “made one invisible to

leprechauns.” The official color for the holiday used to be a sky blue known as “St. Patrick’s Day Blue,” established during the reign of King George III. In addition to these traditions, specialty items, such as coffees and shakes, also are very popular. However, most of these do not have origins on the Emerald Isle, either. Yet, no matter where traditions began, there’s no denying St. Patrick’s Day has long inspired celebration.

Special One-Stop Passport Weekend

To help residents looking to obtain or renew their passports, Oyster Bay Town Clerk Richard LaMarca today announced that his office will offer a special one-stop Passport Weekend on Saturday, March 20th and Sunday, March 21st from 9am to 3pm at both Town Hall North in Oyster Bay and Town Hall South in Massapequa. “Are you looking to apply for a passport? You can visit Town Hall during Passport Weekend to receive free assistance in preparing your application, organizing your documents, obtaining a photo and submitting the documents for approval.” Requirements for applying for a passport include:

One 2x2 color photograph with a clear view of the applicant’s face against a plain white or light colored background. Photos will also be available for $10 at both Town Halls North and South during Passport Weekend. Proof of U.S. Citizenship – Previously issued undamaged U.S. passport, certified birth certificate, Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth, Naturalization Certificate, or Certificate of Citizenship. Proof of Identity – Naturalization Certificate, Valid Driver’s License (cannot have been issued or renewed in the last six months), Current Government ID (city, state or federal), Current

Syosset High School Earns College Board AP® Computer Science Female Diversity Award

AN UNDEFEATED SEASON - Syosset’s Varsity Girls Gymnastics Team finished an undefeated season to win their second Nassau County Team Championship. The girls’ program, which was only started a short four years ago, currently has a total of 34 consecutive wins and their third straight Conference 1 Championship title. At the State Qualifiers, Syosset High School junior Allie Jacobs placed 2nd in AllAround; sophomore Jenna Kolberg placed 4th on Bars and 5th on Floor; sophomore Rebecca Millevoi placed 5th on Bars. The team will be advancing to the Long Island Championships to be held in April.

Danny Zeng, and Michael Lu set a new Syosset record for the 200 Freestyle Relay with a time of 1:28.08, which also recorded as the 5th fastest time for the relay of all New York State Public Schools. a time of 1:38.79, and the 400 Freestyle Relay, swam by Austin Fei, Ethan Chen, Patrick Yan, and Michael Lu recorded as the 5th fastest time of all New York State Public Schools with a time of 3:15.06. Syosset High School has earned the College Board AP® Computer Science Female Diversity Award for expanding young women’s access to AP Computer Science courses and helping close the gender gap in computer science education. This honor acknowledges the strides that Syosset High School and the Syosset Central School District have taken to close the gender gap in computer science.
