YES Community Counseling Center (YES CCC) is a local non-profit organization with a mission to increase awareness about personal and community issues, prevent and treat substance abuse and to promote healthy families and a safe community.
YES Community Counseling Center has what they call a PACT (Partnering In Action and Change For Tomorrow) Initiative, which addresses our nation’s top substance abuse prevention priorities among persons aged 9-20 – underage drinking, marijuana, and opioid use. PACT seeks to understand patterns of youth and young adult underage drinking and substance use and implement targeted evidence based programs, policies, trainings, and education. Through community collaboration, they provide datadriven strategies and educational outreach to strengthen our communities’ prevention capacity to change the conditions by which youth and young adult substance use exists. PACT is comprised of five communities and school districts
(Farmingdale, Island Trees, Levittown, Massapequa and Plainedge) and collaborates with Farmingdale Alcohol Drug Abuse and Prevention Team (ADAPT), Levittown Community Action Coalition (LCAC), and Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC). They also partner with the Long Island Prevention Resource Center (LIPRC), Nassau County Police Department, and New York National Guard Counterdrug Task Force. Those entities work together to prevent the onset and progression of alcohol and substance use among youth and young adults aged 9-20. Prevention begins when communities’ health problems are understood within their environment; only then can YES CCC effectively plan and implement strategic action. The PACT Initiative uses the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) to identify and select comprehensive, data-driven strategies to develop community solutions. The SPF is a 5-step planning process that guides the selection, implementation and evaluation of effective, culturally appropriate and sustainable prevention activities. • Reach out via social media to Irish musicians and encourage them to attend sessions at your business. • Quiet crowds when musicians decide to perform impromptu, even when gatherings fall outside of regularly scheduled seisiún. • Keep songbooks available for patrons who want to join in. While many musicians or novice singers may be familiar with certain tunes, they may not know them all. Having lyrics and music available helps include many others in the fun. • Share news of seisiún at other pubs and establishments and they may do the same for yours. This way music lovers can enjoy music many nights of the week. A great seisiún makes people happy and fills their minds and hearts with wonderful music for some time. This is a great way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and beyond.
Traditional Irish music can enhance any St. Patrick’s Day celebration. Restaurants and pubs opening their doors for events during the month of March, and especially on March 17th, may want to coordinate seisiún at their establishments for extra ambiance and flair. Seisiún is the Gaelic word for “session.” It refers to a mostly informal “jam session” at which people play traditional Irish music. Seisiún generally are unrehearsed gatherings of musicians that happen mostly in pubs. Seisiún may seem as if musicians are part of bands, but this is not necessarily so. Even if gatherings come together fluidly, pub and restaurant owners can facilitate the process. Here are some tips to make it happen. • Plan for and post regular seisiún schedules on your website. A regular seisiún can occur every Saturday evening and also on St. Patrick’s Day.

Town of Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes, Jeffrey Pravato, will host a free Property Tax Assessment Grievance Workshop for residents looking to acquire information on how to challenge their 2023-2024 property tax assessment. The workshop will be held in-person on March 22, 2022 at 7pm at Oyster Bay Town Hall, located at 54 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay. “While Nassau County determines your value, we in Town government want to make sure you know that you have a right as a homeowner to challenge your assessment. Remember, your assessment can only be lowered as the result of a
challenge – it can never be raised – and this workshop helps you challenge for free,” said Receiver of Taxes Pravato. “If you are a homeowner who disagrees with the assessed value of your property, I invite you to attend this Property Tax Assessment Workshop, as the property tax grievance deadline of May 2nd is approaching.” In January, Nassau County notified residents of their home’s tentative assessed value for the 20232024 School tax period and the 2024 General tax period. Fund Raising Event For The Tony LaMarca Life Tribute Award On Thursday, April 7 at 7:00 pm, the Suburban Art League will be hosting a fundraising event for the Tony LaMarca Life Tribute Award at the Syosset Woodbury Community Center located at 7800 Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury, NY. Tony was instrumental for many years in getting arts into the local community with the help of the Town of Oyster Bay. He died suddenly from surgical complications in September. He had no family and no proper funeral or wake, so a SAL member, Ray Guttadauria generously paid for his burial. With the safety of participants being the highest priority for both Special Olympics and the Town of Oyster Bay, this year’s plunge will once again include numerous safety measures to protect all plungers and spectators. All participants will be given specific plunge times and parameters during their registration, which begins at 9:30 a.m., with plunging times beginning at 11 a.m. Requested donation is $25 per participant. Plungers who raise $150 receive a commemorative Polar Plunge sweatshirt. All funds raised at the event support Special Olympics New York’s programs and promote awareness of people living with intellectual disabilities in New York. Proceeds will help to provide year-round sports training and competition in over 22 Olympic-style

Town & LIRR Strike Deal To Advance Hicksville Revitalization
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board have reached an agreement with the Long Island Rail Road to advance revitalization projects in downtown Hicksville while limiting their impact on commuter parking. A Memorandum of Understanding to be entered into between the parties allows the Town to proceed with expansion of John F. Kennedy Park, a new pedestrian walkway known as Festival Pathway, and beautification improvements along the Underline of the railroad tracks. Supervisor Joseph Saladino stated, “I thank the Long Island Rail Road for working with my economic development team to move revitalization projects forward for the Hicksville community. From expanded park space to beautification projects and a new safe pedestrian walkway, we are
improving the downtown and helping to attract new housing opportunities, restaurants, shops and office space.” These revitalization projects, along with the zoning changes recently approved by the Town Board, incorporate years of collaboration between the Town and Hicksville community. With the scope of these revitalization plans more defined, the Town can now proceed with the design phase of the projects and get shovels into the ground next year. The Town and the MTA have agreed to meet annually to further discuss the pressing need for greater parking at the Hicksville Long Island Rail Road - Long Island’s largest commuter hub. from Nassau County for beautification and safety improvements. These funds will be utilized along Broadway and Newbridge Road to improve pedestrian safety and enhance walkability. Hicksville’s downtown is undergoing a renaissance thanks to the vision of the Saladino administration and a $10 million State award for downtown revitalization. Future projects will support increased access to transportation, improve walkability, and attract new housing opportunities. These projects, along with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s $132 million investment in the Hicksville railroad station, will continue to transform Hicksville into a vibrant downtown for downsizers, empty nesters, senior citizens and what millennials asked for and what will keep them here on Long Island.

Basilian Fathers and congregants from St. Josaphat’s participated in the candlelight program which featured quiet reflection, religious readings, and a community call for peace. Donations of much-needed supplies were also collected and will be shipped overseas, including personal hygiene and medical supplies. Supervisor Saladino stated, “We stand united to spread a message of hope, sorrow and peace to the world as an unimaginable and horrific war unfolds in Ukraine. Our vigil is symbolic of our resolve to show support and hope when times are tough. It is also an important message to our brothers, sisters, neighbors and friends in Ukraine that they are not alone. Councilman Laura Maier announced today that the Town of Oyster Bay will host a Pet Food & Supply Drive in partnership with LI Cares. The drive will take place through April 15th with a focus on collecting for the family members most vulnerable to hunger, residents’ pets. Long Island Cares formed Baxter’s Pet Pantry in 2009 to assist in feeding dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, caged pets, fish, reptiles and all others considered family members. “Pets truly are members of our family,” said Councilwoman Maier. “Pet food and supply donations will help furry friends in need, which in turn keeps pets at home with their loved ones. The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to partner with LI
Cares to collect generous donations for this worthwhile cause.” The creation of Baxter’s Pet Pantry by Long Island Cares has helped distribute over one million pounds of pet food, all of which has been donated through pet food drives like this one and corporate donations. “Unfortunately many beloved pets are placed into shelters or given away because families cannot afford the necessary food and supplies,” added Councilwoman Maier. “When struggling families have to make choices to heat their homes, buy medication or feed their own families, pets can become an afterthought. Dear Governor Hochul and Members of the New York State Senate and Assembly,
investment; it’s clear that that tactic is no longer successful, and the state needs to put its money where its mouth is.
As businesses, we were gratified when New York State passed the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) in 2019. The CLCPA provides a road map for our state to reach a renewable energy economy, which will not only combat the devastation and unpredictability of the climate crisis but will lead to greater economic opportunity for New Yorkers as the state creates green jobs and invests in frontline communities.
Thriving communities for businesses to flourish: Thriving communities are good for business. According to the investment plan laid out by NY Renews, in addition to funding renewable energy investments, the $15 billion fund will also go towards improving public transit, public housing, and public schools, all necessary infrastructure for communities to succeed. Additional funding will go towards community-based organizations in neighborhoods most impacted by pollution and the climate crisis to fund local projects that increase our renewable energy supply, make homes and buildings more efficient, and increase resilience to climate change. A significant portion of this funding will go to low-income communities of color, which have received historically inadequate investments from the state and are most vulnerable to pollution and climate change. All of these investments will help New York communities thrive.
In recent years, however, we’ve become concerned that the CLCPA has not been funded. It’s clear that New York needs significant and consistent funding allocations to meet the goals of the CLCPA and realize the benefits of the law for New Yorkers. By allowing the law to remain an unfunded mandate, Albany will create an unstable situation for businesses and leave significant economic benefits on the table. This is why we strongly encourage you to allocate, at minimum, $15 billion in climate, jobs, and justice funding in this year’s New York State budget. These funds will benefit businesses and the communities which we serve in a multitude of ways: Creating jobs and increasing spending power: Investing $15 billion yearly in climate, jobs, and justice will create and sustain 150,000 good-paying jobs over the next decade. Creating stable jobs in renewable energy, building efficiency, public transit, and supportive industries will grow New York’s economy and increase spending power. This is good for New Yorkers, and it’s good for business. New York has the opportunity to be a business leader in renewable energy specifically, creating these jobs here in our state rather than allowing other states to overtake us in this critical and growing market. All jobs created — in renewable energy and otherwise — are good news for New York. Stable investments in building a renewable energy economy: Under the CLCPA, New York must run on 100% renewable electricity by 2040, and our entire economy must be carbon-neutral by 2050. We have made pitiful progress: just 31% of our electric generation comes from renewable sources, and since 2019, we have reduced our economy-wide emissions by only 6%. Moreover, New York currently sends over $30 billion out of state every year to purchase fossil fuels. This lack of progress is concerning for businesses: we want to be able to count on a consistent energy transition along with — or faster than — the timeline outlined in the CLCPA. We need to know that the laws of our state will be followed. New York has had three years to try to meet its own timelines without significantly increasing financial

Putting money back into the pockets of working New Yorkers: Included in this $15 billion investment are direct grants, vouchers, and cash payments to working New Yorkers, increasing their spending power and creating breathing room for families. These funds include: grants to homeowners to make their buildings more energy-efficient (for example, through weatherization or installing heat pumps), transit vouchers for NYC residents and other residents of urban areas to encourage the use of subway and bus ridership, and LIHEAP credits to lessen the cost of heat during cold winter months. These payments will ensure working New Yorkers will have more spending power and more breathing room, which is good for business and good for our state. It’s clear that this $15 billion investment makes good business sense for New York. We strongly encourage the governor and legislature to include this funding in this year’s New York State budget.

Syosset High School Principal, Dr. John Durante, recently launched a podcast with the goal of providing insights straight from college admission professionals of top national universities and colleges. Through the podcast, named The College Admissions Process Podcast (The CAPP), students and parents can hear straight from the people who ultimately make the decisions, with insight and advice on every aspect of the college admissions process. Schools represented on the podcasts recorded

Residents Invited To Submit Photos For Town Publications Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson invites residents to submit photos taken in the Town of Oyster Bay to be considered for future use in Town publications. “Our residents recently received their 2022 Town calendar, which is filled with photos submitted throughout the year depicting people, places, community events and scenery throughout our Town,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “We accept
photos for the calendar, as well as other Town publications, including our website, social media pages and brochures.” Councilwoman Johnson noted that photos should be taken within the confines of the Town of Oyster Bay. Digital submissions are preferred, but high-quality photos may also be submitted. Emailed photos should be sent to photos@oysterbayny.gov. Printed photos can be submitted to the
Town’s Public Information Office, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay NY 11771. Residents should make sure their name, address, phone number and brief description of the photo are included with their submission. The photographer is responsible for the correct spelling of the names and subjects in the photos, as well as notifying subjects they may appear in a Town publication.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Town Councilman Tom Hand, Councilwoman Laura Maier, Councilwoman Vicki Walsh, Town Clerk Rich LaMarca and Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato, as well as Nassau County Legislators John Ferretti and Rose Marie Walker, joined with Sal Stile of DiMaggio’s Pizzeria in Hicksville to celebrate ‘Rosalind Nyman Joel Day’ in the Town of Oyster Bay. The officials joined with local civic and community leaders to honor Billy Joel’s
mother ‘Roz’ on what would have been her 100th birthday. In honor of the ‘Piano Mom,’ DiMaggio’s Pizzeria dedicated a pizza pie in her name and led a Billy Joel singalong in her honor. Roz and Billy Joel were customers at the pizzeria, while Billy Joel grew up in Hicksville. Rosalind, raising Billy as a single mother, performed clerical work and gave her son music lessons as a child. They would frequent the pizzeria after Joel’s music lessons. DiMaggio’s Pizza of New York is located
across the street from where the Long Island icon and singer/songwriter was raised. Owner Sal Stile was pleased to dedicate a pie in Roz’s honor, saying that the pizzeria was a staple in Joel’s upbringing and located at the Village Green referenced in Joel’s hit song Scenes from an Italian Restaurant. DiMaggio’s honored and eternalized their famous family of customers with the dedication of the ‘Roz Pie,’ in honor of Rosalind, who was born on February 15, 1922. She passed away in 2014 at the age of 92.

Legislator Joshua A. Lafazan Hosts Community Supply Drive Nassau County Legislator Joshua A. Lafazan (Woodbury-D) held a supply drive, collecting household, medical, and other miscellaneous supplies for Ukrainian Refugees. The supply drive came shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. It was one of the first supply drives on Long Island for Ukrainian Refugees. The supply drive began at 10:00 AM and
