Open House Set Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) invites all middle school and high school students with artistic talent, passion and ambition to its 2017 Open House on Saturday, April 1st, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. LIHSA is now accepting applications for the 20162017 school year. Prospective students from across Long Island are welcome to tour the campus, meet with expert faculty and staff, and experience classes focused on their specific interests in the visual and performing arts. Talented teens can also find out about this year’s Summer Arts Academy, which runs from July 5th-August 2nd. Attendees can join a theater improvisation skit, sketch in an art class, take a dance class, listen to a jazz performance and participate in much more to get better acquainted with LIHSA. During the Open House, parents of prospective students also have the opportunity to tour the facility and speak with faculty, guidance counselors, administration and staff. Established in 1973, LIHSA is part of the

public education system and is paid for by local school districts. It offers specialized training and instruction to students interested in pursuing careers in dance, drama, filmmaking, instrumental and vocal music, theatre technology, musical theatre and the visual arts. The half-day program enables students to complete their core academic classes in their home high school and receive two and a half hours of intensive training in their chosen field of artistic study. As part of their professional-level training, students regularly receive one-on-one access to experienced professionals working in the industry. Students have recently benefitted from Master Classes and Workshops lead by pop-rock icon Billy Joel, actor and director Ralph Macchio, and principal Paul Taylor Dance Company dancer Michael Trusnovec, who is a LIHSA graduate, among others. “We are incredibly proud of the instruction and experiences offered at the Long Island High School for the Arts,” said Dr. Robert Dillon, District

The Global Institute at Long Island University (LIU) hosted its first event Thursday night, featuring General Colin L. Powell, USA (Ret.). Introduced by the Institute’s Chairman, former Congressman Steve Israel, Powell discussed his commitment to youth education programs throughout the nation, as well as his service as a four-star General in the United States Army and as the 65th Secretary of State (2001-2005). “With the launch of this Global Institute, LIU will become a real leader in global affairs,” said Gen. The Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County (HMTC) is pleased to announce its inaugural Walk the Talk… Never Again, 5K walk, Sunday April 23rd, 2017 on the grounds of Welwyn Preserve, 100 Crescent Beach Road, Glen Cove. Registration is at 9:30 a.m. and the walk begins at 10:30 a.m. The walk is a fundraiser to support HMTC’s education programs across Long Island that empower, mobilize and create Upstanders – people who stand up to antisemitism and intolerance and advocate acceptance for all. TAI CHI CLASS - Marvin Berg, RN, CEN, EMT-CC, Nassau University Medical Center Injury Prevention Coordinator, just completed teaching an eight-week Tai Chi for Arthritis session at the My Home Adult Senior Center in Hicksville. Attached is a photo with the participants of the class that Mr. Berg had the pleasure of teaching. Tai Chi is an evidence-based fall prevention program that we are collaborating on with the NYS Dept. of Health. It is just one of our fall prevention programs that we provide to the community from our Trauma Division at NUMC.

All families throughout Nassau County are encouraged to attend Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s (GSNC) 8th annual Girls Go the Distance (GGTD) event at Old Bethpage Village Restoration. This year’s GGTD will be held on Sunday, April 23rd, and incorporates a “Family Funday” theme that allows all participants to compete in a number of physical and mental challenge station activities to earn patches and prizes - all in an effort to support the Council’s Healthy Living Initiative programming. All participating Girl Scouts will receive the Girls Go the Distance main patch, in addition to having the opportunity to earn up to three supplemental patches based on the number of challenges they attempt. “We are so excited to

once again be promoting healthy lifestyles throughout our Council, but in a way that is new, interactive and can be shared with our families as well,” said Donna Ceravolo, Executive Director of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “This event is always a special day as we kick off the spring season with fresh air, challenges that will put our bodies and minds to the test, and an opportunity to socialize with friends new and old.” This year, the girls and their families have the opportunity to participate in 12 Challenge Stations that include relay races such as a three-legged race, brain teasers such as magnetic horseshoes, and physical challenges such as the Tick-Tock Race the Clock Walk, where participants will be challenged the complete

After completing challenges, all Girls will have the opportunity to earn three supplemental “rocker” patches, which each represent an aspect of Girl Scouts Healthy Living Initiative - body awareness, acquiring new knowledge/ skills and mindfulness. Family Fishing Festival The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) will hold their annual Spring Family Fishing Festival on Saturday, April 1st, at Belmont Lake State Park. “Freshwater fishing is an activity the whole family can enjoy, especially on Long Island,” DEC Regional Director Carrie M. Gallagher said. “The spring fishing festival at Belmont Lake State Park is an excellent way to kick off the fishing season and introduce the family to the sport. No license is needed to participate. Festival visitors can learn about freshwater fishing opportunities on Long Island and local fishing clubs, try fishing for trout, participate in the casting contest, and more.” Additional sponsors for the fishing festival include the Natural Heritage Trust, the Fisherman Magazine, and radio stations 106.1 WBLI and 102.3 WBAB. The festival begins at 10 a.m. and is free of charge. Activities include open fishing, fishing instruction, fly casting demonstrations, and fish cleaning services. DEC and a number of local fishing clubs will have a display and demonstration area, and participants are urged to try their hand at fly casting. Loaner rods and free bait will be available to participants throughout the day. The supply of loaner rods is

limited and participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing tackle if they have it. Children’s activities also begin at 10 a.m. and include an inflatable slide (weather dependent), the “Spring Fling” casting contest, and hands-on educational displays by DEC’s Education Unit. Children participating in the casting contest will have a chance to win prizes supplied by DEC’s I FISH NY Program, OPRHP, the Fisherman Magazine, and The Natural Heritage Trust. To further encourage fishing in New York State, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation in 2012 expanding the opportunity for free fishing clinics and allowing more New Yorkers to experience fishing for the first time with increased DEC free fishing clinics throughout the state. The Free Fishing Days program began in 1991 to enable more people to sample the incredible fishing New York State has to offer. Governor Cuomo’s NY Open for Fishing and Hunting Initiative, under the 2016-2017 budget, provides $3 million for State land access projects and $4 million for hunting and fishing infrastructure. The Spring Fishing Festival is a designated Free Fishing Event, so the freshwater fishing license requirement for anglers age 16 and older is suspended for this event. The festival highlights

DEC’s spring (March and April) trout stocking program in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Prior to the festival, DEC and OPRHP will stock Belmont Lake with close to 4,000 brown, brook, and rainbow trout. Upper Twin Pond in Wantagh, Oyster Bay Mill Pond, Massapequa Creek and Reservoir, as well as 17 other Long Island lakes, will also be stocked with trout by DEC, providing excellent prospects for spring fishing in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. After two successful years, nine yarn shops from Mattituck to Port Washington will be participating in the third annual Long Island Yarn Crawl from March 30th through April 2nd, 2017. Over the course of four days yarn crafters - knitters, crocheters, weavers and spinners - are invited to participate in this self-guided tour of our Long Island yarn shops, which will have extended hours and special activities throughout the weekend. It is a great way for crafters to explore what our local fiber community has to offer and meet other local yarn enthusiasts. Participants are invited to either pick up their Long Island Yarn Crawl Passport from a participating store or download it from the yarn crawl’s website, and have it stamped as they “crawl” from shop to shop. Crawlers who collect stamps from all nine stores will be entered to win amazing prizes: the grand

prize, a $100 gift card from each of the participating stores; or second prize, over $400 of yarn donated by gold sponsor Knitting Fever. Syosset High School is proud to announce that Yash Samantaray is the Class of 2017 valedictorian and Benjamin Rhee is the salutatorian. “Yash and Ben are two exceptional students who we have already heard much about,” said Principal Dr. Giovanni Durante. “In addition to being at the top of their class, they are very involved in their respective extracurricular activities and both have received numerous accolades to date. I’m sure there will be more great things to come from both of them and I wish them continued success in the future.” Yash is president of the high school Mathletes team, a three-time letter winner with both the varsity tennis and badminton teams and a

violinist in the school’s chamber orchestra. He is also an executive board member and web designer for the National Honor Society, was an American Invitational Mathematics Exam qualifier, won gold and bronze medals at the Al Kalfus Long Island Math Fair, and was a semifinalist in the Siemens Science Research competition and a prizewinning scholar in the Regeneron Science Talent Search. He was also named a National Merit Finalist, National AP Scholar and Presidential Scholar candidate this year. Ben serves as editor-inchief of the high school newspaper “The Pulse,” is senior class treasurer and vice president of Model Congress. He has reached the finals and semifinals

in National Chemistry and Biology Olympiads, respectively, along with being named a Regeneron prizewinning scholar and achieving multiple honors while participating in Mathletes. Ben is also a violinist with the school’s chamber orchestra, has served as concertmaster, is the Chamber Music Club president and was selected for All-National and AllEastern ensembles. He was named a National Merit Finalist and a National AP Scholar of Distinction. Yash plans to major in material science engineering and is awaiting word from Harvard, MIT, Stanford and Yale, among others. Ben will major in biosciences and has been accepted to Harvard but has yet to make a final decision.

Four-Time Champ Congratulations to Syosset High School senior Vito Arujau who won his fourth New York State championship in wrestling, becoming only the second wrestler in Nassau County history and 10th in state history to achieve this accomplishment. Vito’s 174-match win streak is a Long Island record and his 216-1 career record ranks among the best of all time. His only loss came against another four-time state champion who holds the state consecutive match streak record. He holds a record five Nassau County titles and won a silver medal

earlier this year at the Cadet World championships held in the country of Georgia. He also finished first in his weight class at the Super 32 national competition held in Greensboro, North Carolina last October and is currently ranked No. 1 in the country for the 138-pound weight class and No. 5 overall pound for pound by Flo Wrestling, a leading source of wrestling news and rankings. Later this month Vito will take to the mat in Pittsburgh as a member of Team USA in the prestigious Dapper Dan tournament. “Vito is an intelligent, dedicated and personable

young man. ‘Tis the time of year when all become Irish for a day, in the honorary sense anyway, and partake in the various St. Patrick’s Day celebrations held across Long Island and New York City. The funny thing is – well, perhaps more ironic than outright humorous – is that when my family and I traveled to Ireland several years ago, we were somewhat surprised to learn that those native to the Emerald Isle do not commemorate the occasion in even remotely the same manner as we do. In fact, the holiday takes on a far more religious tone, filled with pilgrimages to mountaintops to honor St. Patrick himself; a far cry from the drinking and parades which wind through most main streets on this side of the pond.

Speaking of Ireland, and travel, I certainly wish to do more of it, both here and abroad. Before our family trip, I had never been on a plane in my 30 years on this earth; nor, of course, had I bothered to apply for a passport. Old-fashioned road trips across the good old U.S. of A had never held much appeal due to my, shall we say, occasional tendency toward motion sickness during any car ride surpassing two or so hours. And so, at this point, my travels have extended ever so slightly north and south of New York, about halfway down the east coast – no further. And my passport, while it proudly sports that one stamp from Ireland, has remained packed away ever since. Unacceptable, I know. And with that, a new season is on the horizon, although whether Mother Nature will

cooperate remains to be seen. March has always been a notoriously fickle month, what with the remnants of winter storms to contend with, spring rains hovering overhead and blossoms waiting to burst forth from the trees. It is a time of beginnings, of growth, of shaking off the chill of the last several months to head out and feel the warmth of the sun as we explore the great outdoors. No need to pack a suitcase – just hop in the car and go, in any direction, and enjoy the beauty on this long island that we call home. So, as you head out in your green attire this week, take a deep breath of fresh air and start planning some fun activities to see you through to summer. Spring may be a gateway to the season of sun and surf and sand, but it is pretty spectacular in its own right. Enjoy it.

Ten Long Island Allstate agency owners recently received Agency Helping Hands in the Community Awards for their commitment to helping others. This award earned Make-A-Wish Metro New York a $10,000 grant from The Allstate Foundation. The Allstate agents, whose offices are all located in Nassau County, teamed up with their staff and Allstate’s National Catastrophe team to volunteer at the 2016 Make-A-Wish Walk For Wishes® event at Eisenhower Park. As part of their efforts, the volunteers shared helpful information and resources for local families to build disaster preparedness kits. The kits included a hand-crank radio/flashlight, water bottle, dust mask, garbage bags and hand sanitizing wipes, among other items. “Being able to prepare Long Island families for life’s uncertainties is truly an honor and a privilege that our agents were thrilled to be able to do, while teaming up with such an impactful organization like Make-AWish,” said Don Rubbo, New York Regional Sales Leader. “Commitment to our communities is a natural extension of what we do every day – and to see the community and our agents come together for such an amazing cause was extraordinary.
