The Bethpage Union Free School District Board of Education welcomed members of the Bethpage High School Virtual Enterprise program to the February 26th meeting to share their growth as a class. Students involved in the two companies, MiSport and STEALTH Fitness, have enjoyed successful growth that resulted in awards at the January VE Trade Show hosted by LIU Post.
At the board meeting, the leaders of each company had the special opportunity to present their businesses. Superintendent of Schools David Schneider spoke about the growing VE program in the high school, then Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Michael Spence introduced the students and the work they have done. “We are very proud of the efforts, dedication

and hard work of these students as they have treated their companies as real-world professionals,” said Mr. Spence. MiSport was built to offer personal training to all athletes through state-ofthe art sporting equipment. The equipment provides real-time evaluations and feedback that guides users to the corrected form and technique specialized in their desired sport. Meanwhile, STEALTH
Fitness is a subscriptionbased company where customers have access to diet plans, workout routines and supplement products. Each package is personally tailored to the customer for age, weight and goal. The members of each VE company shared the various details of their venture from the start to present, including the awards won at the LIU Post Trade Show. The Charity of the Month for March is: Birthday Wishes!
Birthday Wishes is an organization whose mission is to provide birthday parties to children experiencing homelessness. They improve and empower the lives of homeless children and their families by providing joy, play and hope through the magic of a birthday party.
Birthday Wishes of Long Island began having parties in only one shelter. Today they work with 80 shelters/transitional housing programs in Nassau and Suffolk counties, and each month they give more than 120 children a birthday celebration!

David Arquette on His Famous Family and Our Criminal Justice System By Allison Kugel
The Arquette family are a band of actors, artists, societal provocateurs and activists. With the image that David Arquette has crafted for himself as the family’s resident goofball, his newest film, a documentary titled, Survivor’s Guide to Prison, is a departure. It champions a cause close to David’s heart and gives a window into another side of the actor as concerned citizen and defender of personal freedom. Survivor’s Guide to Prison is currently streaming on Netflix, Amazon Prime, Vudu, Google Play and YouTube.
that is outdated; it doesn’t work anymore. The punishment model has been proven not to be successful and it’s time for change. Matthew put a really amazing documentary together. My wife, Christina Arquette, and I watched an early cut and we both came on board as producers. We worked with Matthew and got a bunch of great people involved. Susan Sarandon is a producer on it, Gina Belafonte, Jesse Williams; just some really great people who have done a lot of great work to help change the prison system.
This documentary film is an eye opening, unsettling and informative look inside America’s criminal justice system and the prison industrial complex; an industry that has continued to grow exponentially with no signs of slowing down. You’ll be introduced to the players politicians, law enforcement officers, our judicial system and the prisonfor-profit industry. You’ll gain a clearer picture of the inner workings of mass incarceration in the United States of America. In addition, David and I discuss his famous family and how they have enriched his life and furthered his purpose.

Allison Kugel: What led you to become involved as a producer on the documentary, Survivor’s Guide to Prison? David Arquette: I was first aware of the project because I’m friends with Matthew Cooke, who is an amazing Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker, who worked on the documentaries Deliver Us From Evil and How to Make Money Selling Drugs. With Survivor’s Guide to Prison, Matthew highlights the prison system, how corrupt it is, and how it’s prison-for-profit. It’s a model
David Arquette: Danny Trejo, specifically, was so generous. He’s had family members who were directly affected by it, recently getting out of prison after being in for a crime they didn’t commit. He had also been in prison way back, a long time ago, when it was a different era, but it’s close to him. Danny sees what it does to communities. One of the things that’s so horrible about this current [Criminal Justice] system is that it takes parents away. The United States locks up more women than any other country in the world. You see the dangers of dismantling the family structure. The War on Drugs, and all these different initiatives to incarcerate people, have proven to be destructive to our society. Allison Kugel: Had Survivor’s Guide to Prison been made in the mid-1990s during the time of the OJ Simpson murder trial and subsequent verdict, how do you think the events of that day would have impacted the messaging and direction of this documentary? David Arquette: That was a flashpoint in our history, with the black community feeling targeted and feeling not heard, and they galvanized. There were many incidents during that time that were tragic. For example, when a young black woman was killed by a Korean business owner… there were a lot of issues during that time period that came up. The interesting thing is that this whole prison industrial complex has grown since then, and has become a profit stream for a lot of people. We still live in a country, and in a world, that has racial injustice all around us. It’s time to speak up and be honest about it, provide change and put money into communities that
have been held back. Allison Kugel: What do you hope the public gains from watching this film? David Arquette: It’s a little tonguein-cheek, the title, Survivor’s Guide to Prison. We say that, because we see people who have survived the prison system as just that, survivors. Just calling people “prisoners” or “inmates” and giving them numbers, it’s such a way of de-humanizing them. So, the idea of this film is to bring some compassion back into the discussion. That’s what we’re trying to do with the stories we highlight in the film about two men who were wrongly accused and went away for decades (Bruce Lisker and Reggie Cole). It totally transformed their lives and changed them on such a deeply painful, human level. Allison Kugel: Why is Hollywood so liberal and so fiercely against the conservative agenda? David Arquette: As artists, part of our job is to look around, see what’s going on, and to feel emotionally connected to injustice and what’s going on in the world. There are a lot of people in Hollywood who are very religious, very straight-laced, and not your typical Hollywood kind of liberal. They are more conservative, but they are good people. I think what it really comes down to is that we want good people to thrive. Allison Kugel: What do you foresee the Arquette family legacy being in decades to come? David Arquette: Ultimately, we’re performers; we’re entertainers. That’s what our past, and the history of our family is about. It’s been about entertaining people. It’s really what I’m passionate about. I like acting. I like making people laugh. I like the idea of somebody having a rough day at work and being able to zone out and watch something. On that note, this isn’t the film that does that (laughs). Allison Kugel: (Laughs) No. It’s an engaging film, it really pulls you in and it’s a must-see. But it’s not an easy watch. Parts of it are actually heartbreaking to watch. David Arquette: This film is about asking some important questions. That is another side of entertainment, shining light on darkness. Allison Kugel: Your grandfather was a comedian, your parents were actors, your siblings are actors. Is
that something you’re hoping will continue with your own children?
really talked about as much, and she really was a hero of mine.
David Arquette: My daughter Coco (Arquette’s thirteen year old daughter with Courteney Cox) loves singing and performing. She’s really good at it, and she’s got a great head on her shoulders about it. We’ve kept everything unprofessional, like school plays and that sort of thing. We just want to allow her the time to grow up. Growing up in LA is already kind of slanted, and not completely grounded in reality. We want to allow her to have a childhood and not have to have the pressures of auditioning.
Allison Kugel: What is your favorite form of artistic expression these days?
Allison Kugel: What do you think is the right age developmentally and emotionally for your daughter, Coco, or any child, to go through the process of auditioning for acting roles? David Arquette: Totally an individual thing. If she was really pushing us, like, “Listen, mom, dad, I want to do this; I want to audition,” then I think there’s something to that... a kid who’s so passionate about that being their life’s goal. But she’s been cool about taking it at a slower pace. Allison Kugel: Out of all the Arquette siblings, who would you say is the most courageous, and why? David Arquette: My whole family, I just love and respect them all. Rosanna is doing so much to stand up to all of the horrors of what’s happening in Hollywood, and in businesses in general. She’s really behind the #MeToo movement, and I’m really proud of her for that. She also supports tons of different charities. Patricia is incredible. She’s got GiveLove.org, that helps places like Haiti with their sanitation system, and helps to provide clean water. Alexis was amazing; the way Alexis stood up for who she was. She was out and transgender before it was
David Arquette: I love painting. I took a Bob Ross instructional course, so I can teach people how to paint in the Bob Ross, wet on wet technique. Allison Kugel: Bob Ross, the Happy Trees guy? David Arquette: Yeah. I went to take a three-week course, where I learned how to teach his happy trees [painting] method. I work with an organization called Art of Elysium. We’re gonna go to hospitals and teach kids how to paint some happy trees. Painting is such a great stress reliever and calms my soul. But I love acting. When I get to work with really talented actors and directors, writers and producers, and dive into that and show what I’ve learned over my twenty-nine years of acting, I really love it. And when those things come together, and you get to work with great projects it really is a gift. Heroes Against Bullying Students from the Bethpage Union Free School District’s John F. Kennedy Middle School visited classrooms at Charles Campagne Elementary School on February 27th to give an antibullying presentation. The JFK students split into groups to visit third-, fourthand fifth-grade classrooms to spotlight antibullying. The presentations concentrated on
defining bullying, which was followed by discussions about examples of superheroes. The latter component was used to show how students can stand up to bullies in positive and impactful ways and help prevent negative behaviors. The superhero analogy was also used to show how students can use “super powers” for the good of standing up to a bully. Younger students engaged
in an exercise in which they identified super powers that they would use to help stop or prevent bullying. The lesson concluded with students illustrating what they would look like as a superhero standing up to bullying. The Bethpage High School varsity kickline team was crowned the National Dance Alliance High School National Champion for the second straight year in the small varsity kick division. The team, which competed in Orlando, Florida on February 24th, earned the title of NDA National Champion in kick while finishing 11th
in team performance, 12th in the jazz category and second in the pom division. The group also earned awards for innovative choreography in pom and technical excellence in kick, and was recognized with the sportsmanship award for members’ positive attitudes and support of other teams. Upon returning to the high school on February
25th, the team was greeted by district and building administrators as well as an excited group of family and friends. “This is a remarkable accomplishment for a second straight year and we are very proud of these Golden Eagles,” said Superintendent of Schools David Schneider.

POB Brain Bee Award Winners
Once again, a POBJFK Social Science Research student has been awarded Head of the Hive following a third consecutive win at the annual Long Island Brain Bee. Last Saturday, POB junior Breanna Huang-Ouyang won first place at this prestigious neuroscience event. Additionally, POB classmate Kreena Totala was the second-place winner. This year’s competitor pool included 51 students representing 25 high schools across Long Island. The goal of the regional high school science competition is to test students’ knowledge of the brain and nervous system. This intellectually rigorous event consisted of three rounds: a written neuroscience exam on brain facts; a laboratory demonstration on normal and pathological human brains and spinal cord specimens; and a test to identify and explain the anatomical structures and functions of various brain specimens. Breanna follows the wins of Jessica Goldstein (2018) and Safia Mirza (2017), and will now have the honor of representing the Long Island Region at the 2019 U.S. Brain Bee Championship later this year. “Many students who

Spring Yoga Classes in Hicksville Oyster Bay Town Councilman Lou Imbroto announces that residents seeking a low-impact and enjoyable fitness activity are encouraged take part in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Yoga Classes, which will be held this April. Classes are co-ed, open to individuals 18 years of age or older and will be held at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage. “The Town is proud to offer residents a variety of programs and services including these yoga classes which offer benefits to the mind, body and soul,” said Councilman Imbroto. “Yoga builds
strength, increases general flexibility and is considered a great stress reliever. poster model, Jamie Mas, Thompson’s own grandson. In 2009 he was a little caddy boy dressed in the clothing style of the original Bethpage logo. During the 2009 photo shoot, Jamie took it on his own to strike another pose that was never used. In that
other photo, he was looking for the ball he had just hit. It looked like the boy was saluting. He is now 21 years old, serving his country in a deployment in the United States Marines. On Thanksgiving 2018, Thompson had the opportunity to be with him before he was deployed. Thompson is also well known for her New York and Long Island scenic works, including: lighthouses; The Big Duck; Theodore Roosevelt’s home at
Sagamore Hill; Fire Island; Riverhead Raceway and the Peconic River; Aqueduct and Roosevelt Raceways; Smithtown Bull; Downtown Sayville and Schoolhouse; Mount Sinai Garden; Lady Golfer at Timber Point Timber; and the Statue of Liberty. Her portraits include “Pope Francis in America,” Derek Jeter, John Heisman, and the “George Washington at Valley Forge” painting, which will also be unveiled. She also paints commissions on request. The most famous commission that Thompson received was from President Ronald Reagan for the official poster design of the National Vietnam Veterans Memorial Statue in Washington, D.C. The unveiling of the PGA painting will be on Friday, March 22, 2019 at the Connetquot Public Library, 760 Ocean Ave., Bohemia, New York, 11716 at 6 P.M. Elaine Faith Thompson, a Long Island native, is back at the Bethpage Black Course. The PGA of America has chosen her to paint a poster commemorating the 2019 PGA Championship at Bethpage Black. The championship will be contested May 16-19, 2019 at Bethpage State Park, in Farmingdale, New York. The PGA Shops will be open to the general public from May 10th to May 12th from 9am to 6 pm. During PGA Week, the PGA Shops will be open for ticketed spectators May 13th to May 19th. The poster is also available at the Bethpage Pro Shop at Bethpage State Park, which is now open everyday. Given her roots, Thompson has worked on many paintings for USGA championships on Long Island and the New York Metropolitan area. Her first golf painting of Bethpage State Park’s Black Course was in 2002. In 2009, she painted a poster for the U.S. Open at Bethpage. This is her first PGA of America painting. Thompson felt honored on July 26, 2018, when the PGA commissioned her to do the painting. She spent the next day photographing the magnificent golf course. Moving Forward Today’s column reflects the long-range plight of the American Polar Bear. You may wonder, “What has that topic got to do with all of the tumult going on in the world today?” Let me hasten the point to explain. The Polar Bear’s basic survival rests on their ability to hunt for seals (their primary food source), while standing on one of the main ice-flows that abound in the sea. Now, with effects of global warming, these large iceflows are rapidly disappearing, leaving the Polar Bear’s main source of food rapidly dwindling. What is bound to happen is that the bears will dwindle along with their main food source. This by itself is a tragedy, but unfortunately it’s only the “tip of the iceberg (no pun intended).” To show this problem in a different light, do you remember that as a kid you

What Gifts Do You Bring to the World? “Kindness is a gift everyone can afford to give.” - Unknown The Wright brothers gave us the gift of flight. Steve Jobs gave us the gift of portable, digitally downloadable music. Alexander Fleming gave us the lifesaving gift of penicillin and the birth of antibiotics to fight infections. Next to some of these historical bigwigs, it can be easy to downplay the gifts that we each offer to the world as inconsequential. While it is true that some of us provide gifts that impact millions, or even billions, of people around the world on a massive scale, many of us are here to share our gifts through what is commonly known as the ripple effect. The ripple effect is defined as “every action that you make affects other people and the planet.” Each of us is consistently generating ripples every day. We are powerful creators. It may not hit the entire world at once like the explosion of the iPhone. Your gifts may instead impact people more subtly and slowly, and therefore you are
prone to underestimate your power to impact others. The school teacher who leaves an indelible imprint on a particular student or group of students; the person who volunteers their time and attention to a worthy cause that changes the course of someone’s life; a genuine compliment spoken to someone who needs it at just the right time; the painting or sculpture you create that lands in someone’s home and makes them smile or feel inspired every time they look at it... there are so many things we each do and say that are impacting people around us in ways we cannot fully grasp. A co-worker of mine whom I like and respect very much, was telling me that she doesn’t know how I manage to write a weekly column, because she does not feel it is within her capacity to do so. I promptly replied to her, “You have the gift of kindness. You are one of the kindest people I have ever known, and that is your special gift.” She stared at me in stunned silence, as though she had not
been told that before. You may have the gift of kindness and generosity, or the gift of artistic expression. Perhaps your gift is being able to build things or put anything together. Maybe you have the gift of humor. You always manage to brighten people’s day with a well placed joke or funny story, and your comedic timing is impeccable. You may be gifted in the kitchen, whipping up the most delicious meals that bring people together. I have a dear friend whom I affectionately call, “The Child Whisperer.” Children are always calm and happy in his presence and they just love his energy; animals too. It’s human nature to continuously tally up our shortcomings, but have you ever taken stock of the gifts that you bring to the world? And when was the last time you really harnessed their power to improve your life and the lives of those around you? You don’t need permission to express your gifts to the world. The right question could be as simple as, “How can I make someone else’s life better today?”

Addressing The Challenges Of Long-Distance Caregiving Taking care of an elderly loved one can be fulfilling. It isn’t always easy, however. Having to do it from another city or state can make the challenges seem even more complex. Out of the 34 million Americans who provide care to older family members, 15 percent live an hour or more away from their relative. Out of these, nearly 80 percent work full- or part-time. How do they manage? It takes organization, determination and a supportive employer. Long-distance caregivers
provide a wide array of services at great cost to themselves. According to a survey by the National Alliance for Caregiving, long-distance caregivers spend an average of $392 per month on travel and out-ofpocket expenses. The expenditure in time is no less than the expenditure in dollars. Out of the more than 1,100 long-distance caregivers contacted by the National Alliance for Caregiving, half of them said they spend nearly 14 hours a month arranging
care services and half said they spend another 16 hours a month checking on their care recipient or monitoring the care being received. Nearly three-quarters of these long-distance caregivers provide help with instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) such as transportation, shopping, cooking, cleaning, managing finances and medicationsfor an average of 22 hours per month. Considering that so many long-distance caregivers are employed, they often
have to make significant adjustments to their work schedules to allow for their caregiving responsibilities. Twenty-five percent of the surveyed long-distance caregivers had shortened their workday while they were caregiving and 36 percent reported missing full days of work. Twelve percent had taken a leave of absence. The forces that have created today’s long-distance caregiver realities, including an aging population, families separated by distance,
more women entering the workforce, and global competitiveness among companies, are unlikely to reverse themselves in the near future. Rather, the challenges and work-balance issues are likely to accelerate. Clearly, long-distance caregiving already impacts retention and productivity. What can an employer do? Certainly, sensitizing line managers to the issue is a reasonable starting point. Adjusting policies to allow job sharing and short-time relief, as well as providing
information and help in coordinating eldercare, are definitely worthwhile investments, compared to the cost of attrition and lost productivity. And, since long-distance caregivers have financial burdens as well as time conflicts, programs that offer help with these are beneficial. For example, voluntary pooling of frequent flyer miles for employees who need to travel on family emergencies is an idea worth considering.
