Spring Awakening By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Are you all enjoying your one extra hour of daylight? Feels more springy already, doesn’t it? Me, I’ve always looked to St. Patrick’s Day as the transitional date when winter finally – and hopefully thoroughly – gives way to spring. After that, it’s only a matter of time ‘til we’re dying Easter eggs, breaking out the pastels and looking to plant our gardens. After journeying to Ireland this past summer, it was fascinating to see how little the homeland pays attention to this

“holiday.” It is a uniquely American celebration of… well, in theory, Irish pride. In reality… let’s just say, Irish heritage seems to be optional in the grand parade of drunkenness and debauchery that descends upon the entire month of March here in New York. But back to the dawn of spring and sunshine and butterflies and flowers… there’s something very exciting about this rebirth of Mother Nature, isn’t there? The time for hibernation is over. Get out the cleaning supplies, put away any lingering remnants of winter, and start redecorating for this

new season of rebirth. So, take solace. It’s been one long, tedious winter, to be sure. But spring is ready to be sprung upon us all. Open the windows, let the light in, stop and smell the flowers – once they’ve begun to bloom, of course. Pretty soon, the snowcovered landscape will be a distant memory. We’ve all claimed we’re going to enjoy this upcoming spring and summer that much more after the last several months of bone-chilling cold. So let’s follow through on that, shall we? No time like the present to begin anew.

The event will be held at Flowerfield Celebrations Catering, located at 199 Mills Pond Road in St. James from 7 to 11 p.m. The honorees for this year’s Fur Ball will be Mark Lesko, Executive Director, Accelerate LI; Gail Waller and Wendy Waller. This year, John F. Kennedy Class of 2002 alumna Traci Krasilovsky celebrates a benchmark achievement in her career as a senior swimsuit designer for a major design corporation. Ten swimsuits from the junior private label that Krasilovsky designs for a major retail chain are being featured in the 2014 Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition and on the Sports Illustrated website. The retail chain is Krasilovsky’s central client through her parent company, Li & Fung. As senior designer, she wears many hats, from

designing and presenting new collections, to acting as liaison between the production and technical design teams. She works closely with high-end designers, artists and print studios, attends fittings, conducts market research and forecasts market trends. “I absolutely love my job,” Krasilovsky said. “I have total creative freedom. It’s challenging,” she added. “You have to prove yourself. But it’s also really rewarding. BOCES really prepared me for college and, ultimately, my career.” Krasilovsky, who lives and works in New York City, is a natural in her field. By the age of 13 she knew she wanted to go into design and pursued her love through programs at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology. After attending the Long Island High School for the Arts, she attended Parsons New School for Design, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in fashion design. “Traci was an outstanding student in the art department,” said her former LIHSA art teacher and mentor Rae Raff. “She is conscientious and talented in the extreme. We are very proud of her and her wonderful accomplishments. It is no surprise she is such a remarkable success.”

Vincent Lant recently pursued his Eagle Scout rank in his own hometown of Hicksville by undertaking restoration at the Historic Gregory Museum. Under the leadership of Vincent, Scouts from Troop 382 removed two old park benches that were in deplorable condition, excavated the surrounding ground, installed pavers and built two new mahogany benches using stainless steel screws that give this landmark site a

fresh look. Vincent’s project also entailed fabricating a new frame for the sign insert advertising the museum’s name. Adding surrounding plants gave the sign the new appeal it needed. In addition, 500 pounds of red landscaping rocks were installed in order to have proper drainage around the north side of the museum. To fund the project, Vincent held a fundraising breakfast at Applebee’s and also received donations from local businesses.

Vincent’s project inpsired other senior scouts from his troop to also make the museum their Eagle community project. As a result, Hicksville’s historic site is now seeing muchneeded restoration, and Vincent feels a sense of pride every time he passes the museum. Presently, Vincent is a sophomore at St. Dominick’s High School. He is also a lector and a religious education teacher at Our Lady of Mercy in Hicksville.

Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad are inviting residents to start planning their week off on their day off. “Passport Day in the USA’s Largest Township” will be held at Hempstead Town Hall (1 Washington Street, Hempstead) on Saturday, March 22nd, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., offering residents a convenient weekend date on which to apply for a U.S. Passport. “‘Passport Day in the USA’s Largest Township’ is a one-stop shop for passport application services in the Town of Hempstead,” stated Murray. “We know town residents work hard during

the week, and we urge them to attend on March 22nd to apply for their U.S. Passport and start planning their next vacation.” The town’s Passport Shop supplies the applications, takes passport photos and does not require appointments. “We invite all residents who need a passport for their upcoming vacation to visit Town Hall on March 22nd for ‘Passport Day in the USA’s Largest Township,’” said Ahmad. As the weather gets warmer, it is easy to let seasonal moments pass us by. For instance, the glory associated with St. John the Baptist’s High School Rowing is heightened going into spring season. Getting on the water is a long-awaited break from the monotony of winter training. Thankfully, our team is bigger and better than ever. With a handful of standouts, backed up by a strong base of rowers, SJB is certainly in the hunt for a State Championship win this year. Although we have not been the most competitive team in recent years, a newfound drive and

revamped training staff seem to be the key to a winning season. For those who don’t know, Rowing is an historic sport that tests both the mind and the body. As a four year Varsity rower, I know as well as any of my teammates just how dedicated one has to be to excel in this sport. Although I am far from elite, Rowing is becoming increasingly competitive. With an abundance of college scholarship money available for top rowers, the race for supremacy is grueling. Long workouts on the rowing machine give rowers the edge that they crave when spring season rolls around.

It is no secret that the basis for a winning team is proper training during the winter. For rowers, this season functions as the offseason. An old adage states that “races are won in the winter.” Essentially, the better prepared group will come out on top. There is no feeling comparable to passing another boat. In that moment, it becomes evident that the faster team simply wants it more. Without preparation, that win could not be possible. As we barrel into Spring, don’t let moments like this pass you by. Make the most out of the season, and life as a whole.

Social entrepreneurship is defined by the organization as tackling a problem with a sustainable plan. At the February 25th meeting of the Board of Education, the student committee presented its action plan to the public and explained that they chose health and wellness as their focus due to the national rise in childhood obesity, the national rise in juvenile diabetes, and students admitting to spending too much time playing video games and apps on phones. The students’ goals are for the entire community to be involved in the pursuit of healthier lifestyles and to have fun together while being fit. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto invites those who wish to join him help protect and enhance Tobay Beach, along with fellow Town officials, Town work crews and other concerned individuals, at the annual Tobay Beach Dune Stabilization Project, one of the premiere environmental events not only in the Town of Oyster Bay, but across Long Island. This year, the first dune stabilization project at Tobay since Hurricane Sanday, will take place on March 15th, at 10 a.m. “I am pleased to announce the return of this event which is vital not only for our environmental preservation efforts here in the Town, but also an excellent opportunity for

community groups and volunteers to pitch in and give back,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Last year’s event, which was to be the 25th annual, unfortunately was cancelled as a result of the unprecedented devastation brought about by Hurricane Sandy. As I promised last year when I had to make the tough decision to cancel this project, this storm is something that this Town would come back from, and I am proud to say that Tobay beach, including the entirety of its dunes and facilities, have been restored to its former glory.” Supervisor Venditto noted that projects such as this are important for numerous reasons, chief amongst them being that

the planting of the grass helps to stabilize and enlarge our dunes, helping to provide a natural barrier against storm surge and high winds, as well as protecting the delicate ecosystem of the surrounding areas. At the last Dune Stabilization Project in March 2012, over 1,100 volunteers turned out for the event and planted more than 230,000 stalks of dune grass. Supervisor Venditto went on to state that as in years past, volunteers are needed to help plant dune grass. This year, Long Island High School for the Arts Class of 2002 alumna Traci Krasilovsky celebrates a benchmark achievement in her career as a senior swimsuit designer for a major design corporation. Ten swimsuits from the junior private label that Krasilovsky designs for a major retail chain are being featured in the 2014 Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition and on the Sports Illustrated website. The retail chain is

Krasilovsky’s central client through her parent company, Li & Fung. As senior designer, she wears many hats, from designing and presenting new collections, to acting as liaison between the production and technical design teams. She works closely with high-end designers, artists and print studios, attends fittings, conducts market research and forecasts market trends. “I absolutely love my job,” Krasilovsky said. “I have total creative freedom. It’s challenging,” she added. “You have to prove yourself. But it’s also really rewarding. Every time I see someone wearing one of my designs I feel such a sense of accomplishment.” She credits Nassau BOCES for helping to pave the way. “Everyday after school my teachers would work with me on my portfolio. BOCES really prepared me

for college and, ultimately, my career.” Krasilovsky, who lives and works in New York City, is a natural in her field. By the age of 13 she knew she wanted to go into design and pursued her love through programs at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology. After attending the Long Island High School for the Arts, she attended Parsons New School for Design, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in fashion design. “Traci was an outstanding student in the art department,” said her former art teacher and mentor Rae Raff. “She is conscientious and talented in the extreme. We are very proud of her and her wonderful accomplishments. It is no surprise she is such a remarkable success.”

Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos hosted the first Nassau County “Women of the World” Art and Photography Exhibition to promote local female artists and to support the growing arts and film industry in the County. The Exhibition, which kicked-off Women’s History Month in Nassau County, attracted over 300 attendees to view pieces from 53 local award winning artists. The winning artists were Victoria Selbach in the fine arts category and Asia Lee for photography. The credit for the remarkable success, however, belongs to Jill Rader Levine who worked tirelessly with my staff to achieve this feat.
