This Virtual One-Room Schoolhouse Experience Makes a Huge Impact on Long Island & Beyond The Farmingville Historical Society was formed in 1992 to preserve and restore the Bald Hills OneRoom Schoolhouse. The Bald Hills Schoolhouse is a one-room Greek Revival Schoolhouse built in 1850. It stands on its original foundation on Horseblock Road in Farmingville and served the Farmingville community until 1929. After 84 years of being closed, the Schoolhouse was re-opened in November 2013 to educate the community through student field trips, history speaker presentations, historic events and now through The Virtual One-Room Schoolhouse.

The External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. EDP, is a competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for EDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without the structure of tests. The Twilight Wish Foundation www.twilightwish.org

T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true. Each week for the remaining weeks this month, I will feature wishes that were granted right here on Long Island, starting with Kathy W. Kathy is a 74 year old resident of Middle Island who was nominated by one of her friends. She has trouble hearing, but continues to be an active participant in the Catholic Daughters of America and the first one to jump in and help out, according to her nominator. She is also very active in the parish senior club and pre-COVID she attended all the functions. Kathy needed hearing aids, but could not afford them on her fixed income. However, after being nominated and chosen, The Twilight Wish Foundation was able to grant her wish of receiving hearing aids! This was a life changing experince for all involved.

Many seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable conditions. Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Please note, when going to grant a wish, this foundation takes all the necessary safety precautions. If you would like to get involved with The Twilight Wish Foundation, you can! New Resource Announced for Individuals with Autism and Their Families Autism Communities (Deer Park, NY, www. autismcommunities. org), a private, 501(c) (3) organization, whose mission is to provide housing solutions for adults with autism in independent, safe, and inclusive living environment, has created a new resource for individuals with autism and their families. Club AC offers monthly social and educational events for adults with autism and their families. Among the educational topics which have been or will be covered are home technologies for individuals with autism, emergency preparedness, vocational skills and resources, guardianship, ABLE accounts, and person-centered housing plans. Recreational activities include bingo games, drive-in movies, painting and dance classes. According to Autism Communities Chairman Paul Pedretti, a father of a daughter with autism, “The feedback we have been receiving for Club AC has been great for all participants. For individuals with autism, there are new friends

to make and socializing opportunities. Their family members are also making new acquaintances of other parents and siblings who share similar experiences living with a family member on the spectrum. Additionally, we are getting an excellent response to our educational programs which are centered on real issues and concerns. For these programs, we are securing experienced professionals who can provide valuable information and ultimately, peace of mind.” Club AC is a one of kind program on Long Island. Prior to the pandemic’s restrictions, its programs were live. Currently, virtual formats are being used, but still delivering tremendous value to Club AC members and guests. Building Department Opens WalkUp Window Services for Residents

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Lou Imbroto announced that the Department of Planning and Development has opened a new walkup window to its Town Hall South location to safely assist residents with building permit applications. Residents can access the new space, available in the front parking lot at Town Hall South in Massapequa, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. “Are you thinking about a new swimming pools, fence, solar panels, a generator or upgrading your home? Planning experts are available to assist you with various building procedures,

including the permit process,” said Councilman Imbroto. “Our Town has ensured that services remain available to residents since the beginning of the pandemic, with our staff always being available even when our buildings have remained closed. We have worked to ease the permit process for residents, recently opening a new walk-up service at Town Hall North, and now at Town Hall South to allow for those looking to file their paperwork.” The Town of Oyster Bay Department of Planning and Development’s new walk-up service is available at Town Hall South, located at 977 Hicksville Road in Massapequa (at the front of

the building, north side), from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., as well as at Town Hall North, located in the parking lot between 54 and 74 Audrey Avenue (near the elevator shaft) in Oyster Bay from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. “This new walkup window allows residents to drop off their applications and speak with planning experts to assist in obtaining materials needed to process permits,” Councilman Imbroto added. TWENTY-ONE MARCHES 100th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION - Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson recently joined with Eleanor McKenna (center) longtime Woodbury resident in celebrating her 100th birthday. Eleanor was born on March 2, 1921 in Queens, and spent time as a teenager working as a waitress at the Woolworth’s dinette counter and later, went back to school to get her high school diploma and her college degree before becoming an accountant. Eleanor married her husband Bill in 1941 and moved out to Syosset years later, where they raised seven wonderful children, Mary Ellen, James, William, Kevin, Susan, Michael and John. Eleanor and her husband earned the reputation as very hard working people who sacrificed greatly for the benefit of their family, and they were also exemplary citizens in the community and good neighbors. Councilwoman Johnson joined with Eleanor, who now lives in Woodbury, and her family and friends to wish her a very happy birthday, and that she continue to enjoy life and all of God’s blessings.

Hicksville Sisters Create Masks For Flute Players instrument doesn’t allow for a bell cover, making it challenging to create something that would cover the face but also allow a flute player to play. Samantha and Lauren knew there was a solution. They saw flute masks online, but they retailed around $28 each, which was not cost-effective, nor feasible to ask students to purchase on their own. The Mason sisters realized they could make them and donate them to their peers. They started by creating a template for the fabric, shaped like a football, then sewed the masks together while leaving a slit on the side to slide the flute in. This way, when a flute player exhales, the mask is able to expand squarely around one’s face, limiting particles from escaping. Lauren first tried out the mask in her middle school band class and when it proved to be successful the sisters created enough for each of the 78 in-person flute players in the district, plus a few extra. Not only did Samantha and Lauren create the masks to help others, they also wanted to make sure the pandemic wouldn’t

stop them from playing music and following their passion. “Lauren and I have been playing the flute since fourth grade, so I’ve been playing for six years and her for three. That’s basically what we do in our free time is practice for auditions, or NYSSMA or All-State, so it’s more important that we play constantly and keep it going,” said Samantha. The sisters took the extra step of individually packaging each mask, including a card with instructions on how to use, wash and wear them. The Hicksville School District is extremely grateful for their contribution to students in the music program and recognizes their altruistic nature. “They have a wonderful supportive family and they’ve had wonderful and supportive teachers throughout their life, in particular music teachers, who have gotten them to the point where they are thinking about safety, they are thinking about what’s going on in the present, but they’re also thinking about others,” said Hicksville Supervisor of Fine Arts Chad Wyman.

Two sisters in the Hicksville School District are stepping up to help their peers in the music program stay safe. Samantha Mason (10th grade) and Lauren Mason (seventh grade) designed masks specifically for students who play the flute and donated them to the district. Being flute players themselves, the sisters wanted an extra layer of protection from the COVID-19 virus during band class and that’s how they came up with the idea. Since COVID-19 is transmitted typically through respiratory droplets, it greatly affects music classes. Before schools reopened in September, New York state guidelines said music students had to be at 12-feet apart from one another, as opposed to the six-feet requirement in other classrooms. The Hicksville Music Department also followed the recommendation of creating bell covers for brass instruments, adding extra safety measures for students. But playing the flute follows a different mechanic, with most of the air coming from the mouthpiece. The

Oyster Bay is proud to partner with LI Cares to collect generous donations for this worthwhile cause.” The creation of Baxter’s Pet Pantry by Long Island Cares has helped distribute over one million pounds of pet food, all of which has been donated through pet food drives like this one and corporate donations. “Unfortunately many beloved pets are placed into shelters or given away because families cannot afford the necessary food and supplies,” added Councilman Hand. “When struggling families have to make choices to heat their homes, buy medication or feed their own families, pets can become an afterthought. Pet food drives like this one can be a

Town Seeks Volunteers for March 27th Dune Day at TOBAY Beach Residents who love visiting the beach and want to help protect the shoreline can join Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and members of the Town Board at the Towns’ annual Dune Day, scheduled for Saturday, March 27th at TOBAY Beach. The event begins at 10 a.m. by the dunes at TOBAY. Supervisor Saladino stated, “The Dune Stabilization Project brings together residents of all ages in an effort to protect and preserve our beautiful shoreline and

environment by planting stalks of dune grass. This year, our event takes a social-distanced approach as volunteers must wear a mask and remain socially distant for the duration of the event.” The Dune Stabilization Project helps preserve our beach and barrier island for future generations, Volunteers work alongside Town officials and crews, as well as residents from across the Town who share an interest in helping preserve TOBAY Beach. Dunes along our south shore continue to face

environmentally damaging storms that have a significant impact on the beach. Statistics indicate that the planting of dune grass provides a natural shield that is perfect for withstanding storm surges and high winds. External Diploma Program The External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. EDP, is a competency based

program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for EDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without

Brandt Selected to Play in All-American Soccer Game Syosset High School is proud to announce that student-athlete Avani Brandt has been selected to play in the 8th Annual Girls’ Soccer High School All-American Game in St. Louis, Missouri on May 29. Avani, one of the SHS Varsity Girls Soccer Team’s senior captains, is among the 45 elite high school soccer players selected nation-wide to play in the All-American Game. She is the first player in Syosset’s soccer program to receive this honor and will be representing Syosset as part of the East AllAmerican Team, comprised of 23 student athletes from the eastern US. Last year, Newsday named Avani one of the Top 100 Girls Soccer Players. She has been named All-

County all three years of her high school career and last season was named AllState and selected for the Newsday All Long Island Team. Councilman Tom Hand announced today that the Town of Oyster Bay will host a Food & Supply Drive in partnership with LI Cares. The drive will take place from March 15th to April 15th with a focus on collecting for the family members most vulnerable to hunger, residents’ pets. Long Island Cares formed Baxter’s Pet Pantry in 2009 to assist in feeding dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, caged pets, fish, reptiles and all others considered family members. “Pets truly are members of our family,” said Councilman Hand. “Pet food and supply donations will help furry friends in need, which in turn keeps pets at home with their loved ones. Councilwoman Maier Cautions Residents Not to Fall Victim to Phone Scams Town of Oyster Bay Councilwoman Laura Maier cautions residents to be on alert of potential telephone scams, particularly those soliciting any personal information or monetary contribution. “Time and time again we hear about scammers trying to obtain sensitive information from unsuspecting

residents, especially our senior citizens,” said Councilwoman Maier. “Many times, scammers pose as officials from the Internal Revenue Service, Social Security Administration or other well-known agency, designed to intimidate the call recipient.” The Councilwoman noted that many times, their return phone

numbers can also be falsified to appear as a familiar number. In addition to seniors, others frequently targeted include students and first-generation Americans. Current common scams include offers of debt relief, car warranty extensions, and credit repairs. Scammers have also been known to pose as family members

allegedly in trouble and seeking money. “The last thing families need, especially during these uncertain times, is someone trying to scam them out of their hardearned money,” said Councilwoman Maier. “We alert all residents to be wary of any unsolicited phone calls, especially those requesting money or personal information,

even if they claim to be from a government or bank entity.” The Federal Trade Commission offers the following tips to residents who fall victim to scam phone calls: · Hang up the phone. Don’t press numbers to speak to alive operator or take your number off the list, this just confirms your phone number.

· Consider asking your phone company whether they charge for blocking phone numbers. · Don’t trust your caller ID. Scammers use the internet to make calls all over the world. · Report your experience to the FTC online or by calling 1-877-382-4357. Visit www.ftc.gov/calls for more information.
