Awards of Excellence The Art League of Long Island’s ninth annual “Go APE” Advanced Placement Student Exhibition features 2-D and 3-D works by 122 students from 37 Long Island High Schools. This is an opportunity for what may be the first of many times these promising young art students will show their work in a

The Town of Oyster Bay 2016 Distinguished Artists Concert series continues into March with a number of performances at various libraries throughout the Town. Running from now through May 2016, the Distinguished Artists Concert Series is one of the Town’s most popular programs, featuring a diverse collection of performances from musical acts and dance programs. Admission to each performance is free of charge and each performance illustrates how truly diverse the interests of our residents here in the Town are. These performances provide them with the finest cultural and performing arts entertainment in the comfort and convenience of their local library. For the month of March, there will be four performances: On Sunday, March 13th, at 2:00 p.m., “Sister Act,” a Musical Tribute to the Popular Divas Past and Present will be

Long Ago & Far Away By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Time continues to march on, and those moments we so casually took for granted along the way become nothing more than a distant memory, relegated to the nostalgia pile, to be savored in the imagination only. The difference, though, is that these flashbacks are increasingly from not so long ago, mere years, rather than decades… yet they seem a lifetime away, just out of reach. It’s the little things, too, the laughs shared, the stories told, the impromptu gatherings, the gifts exchanged, the memories made. Whether with family members, friends, co-workers, even the occasional stranger, every moment is part of something
larger, a curve in the path – your path – of life. Every decision made, or not made; each chance encounter or outlined goal – all leads to the point we are currently at, for better or worse. How amazing to be able to foresee the consequences of our actions; but then, our choices would be far simpler, wouldn’t they? Gone would be the mystery, the spontaneity, the happy accidents that tend to occur along the way when you simply close your eyes and just let life take you by the hand. There are those who believe in destiny; and there are those who refuse to think we don’t have as much input in our affairs as any otherworldly force. Which is right? Who’s to say. The only indisputable fact is that everything does
happen for a reason. People come into our lives, or go, as the case may be; and we are better for it. Every chance meeting is a lesson in disguise, to be determined at a later date. In the meantime, we go on, as does time. Our world grows smaller as circumstances change our daily dynamics, and we are forced to adjust, whether we care to or not. The memories fade, and their significance wanes in the face of more urgent, pressing matters. But we should never forget… the people, the places, the roads taken – all have led to here and now. And one day, not so very far away, this, too, will be but a snapshot in the giant album of life. We had best preserve it from now.

Rock of Pages “Rock of Pages” was the theme for this year’s Parents as Reading Partners (PARP) program at Robbins Lane Elementary School in Syosset. Brent Daniels, a singer, songwriter and composer, introduced the theme of rock-n-roll on opening day. The children learned that they too could compose their own music through the power of reading and technology. During the two weeks of PARP, students read on a daily basis and those classes
and individuals who read the most minutes were honored at every grade level. Individual winners received iTunes gift cards and musical note pencils. “Rock of Pages” culminated with a nighttime pajama party held in the Robbins Lane gym, featuring a DJ, rock-n-roll novelty items, a selfie booth with a rockn-roll backdrop and a traditional snack of cookies and milk. According to one Robbins Lane teacher, every student was left
feeling like a ‘reading rockn-roll superstar!’ PARP is a program sponsored by the national PTA that encourages schools to develop programs and activities designed to promote reading in school, and at home. This includes recognizing students for time spent reading and asking parents to dedicate time at home to read with their children.
High School for the Arts Honored Anthony Morano of the Massapequa UFSD, a theater student at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), was honored recently by the White House, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) and Prudential Financial for his humanitarian efforts. He earned both the President’s Volunteer
Service Award and the Prudential Spirit of Community Award for his substantial volunteer work. “Your volunteer service demonstrates the kind of commitment to your community that moves America a step closer to its great promise,” wrote President Barack Obama in a congratulatory letter to Anthony. “Thank you for
your devotion to service, for helping to address the most pressing needs in your community and our country, and for doing all you can to shape a better tomorrow for our great Nation.” The President’s Volunteer Service Award recognizes those who have volunteered significant

Students throughout the Hicksville Public School District celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. Seuss on March 2nd — also known as National Read Across America Day — by participating in a variety of related reading activities in its elementary schools. At Burns Avenue, younger students were paired off with
upperclassmen to read Seuss books together. Prior to the reading activity, students created red-and-white paper top hats to resemble the iconic headdress from one of Seuss’ most popular books, “The Cat in the Hat.” At Woodland, guest parents read Dr. Seuss books to students in different classrooms.
Students also received Seuss bookmarks and learned about the legacy of the famous children’s author. Hicksville’s observance of National Read Across America Day reinforced the importance of reading to students while celebrating the work of Dr. Seuss.

High School for the Arts Honored
Congratulations to Syosset High School senior Nicholas Montoro for being awarded the Florence Cohen Memorial Youth Award by the Red Cross of Greater New York. The award is presented to one Long Island Red Cross youth member who exemplifies the true nature of volunteerism. Nicholas credits his father, Salvatore, for inspiring him to volunteer for the Red Cross, for which he has served since the eighth grade. Together,
Nicholas and his father – a past recipient of the Red Cross Leadership Award – have helped numerous families in need, particularly following Superstorm Sandy. Nicholas recalled helping to organize shelters for those who lost their homes, including many who flocked to the Nassau Coliseum just to have a roof over their heads and a warm place to stay. “That experience really put things into perspective,” said Nicholas,
who will be honored at a Red Cross volunteer recognition event in early March. “With the Red Cross, we try to help others in different ways. It’s nice to have the ability to help someone else.” According to the American Jewish Chronicle, Florence Cohen was an active member of the Red Cross who often assembled care packages to send to troops serving overseas during WWI.

As part of an annual tradition, Hicksville Public Schools honored district staff members, PTA members and one special honored guest at the Founders Day dinner and awards ceremony held at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. Hicksville’s central administration, Board of Education, teachers and PTA members were in attendance to pay homage to the district’s founding fathers by celebrating the service of those who exhibit that same dedication today. While staff and PTA members of each of the district’s nine schools were honored with plaques, one distinguished individual - District Director of Facilities and Operations David Bell - was recognized for his extraordinary work ethic and commitment. “These honorees are selfless, driven to do good things for other people and don’t even need the
credit,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carl Bonuso said. “They go above and beyond, and this is one of the founding principles that they know. They are carrying out a beautiful legacy of what Hicksville is all about. I think of the Founding Fathers looking down at the caliber of people here tonight, and I have to say thank you - not only for all that you do, but for allowing me to be a part of this remarkable family.” Bell began his career as head custodian at the high school in 2002. Four years later, his work ethic was recognized and he was promoted to assistant director of facilities and operations. Bell became director of facilities and operations when the position became available in 2008, and has since put his stamp on countless enhancements, facelifts, beautification projects, undertakings, renovations, repairs, upkeep and
maintenance. He sits on both the Efficiency Committee and Safety Committee and holds vocational certificates in heating, ventilation and air conditioning from Nassau Technical and Electrical I and Electrical II from Wilson Technical. Joined in attendance were his wife, Karen, and one of his three children, Nicholas. Bell thanked his family and colleagues for accompanying him on such a special night. He said that the outstanding caliber of his staff and the constant support of his family are just a couple of reasons why he has been bestowed the prestigious honor, and also why he loves coming to work everyday. Founder’s Day served to honor district staff and PTA members for their hard work, and to thank them for consistently doing all they can for Hicksville Public Schools.
Bubble Gum, Bubble Fun Students and staff at Lee Avenue Elementary School in the Hicksville Public School District participated in National Bubble Gum Day to raise funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Students were given permission to chew gum throughout the day if they donated 50 cents to the worthy cause; more than $430 was raised as a result. As part of the special day, Superintendent of Schools
Dr. Carl Bonuso also read “Bubble-Gum Artist” by Lester Fizz to students in class. The day served as a fun and educational way for students to learn the importance of altruism.

serving your community. Contributions like yours make our communities and our entire nation stronger. We salute you for your achievement.” During the course of the past four years, Anthony has raised $10,000 for a number of charities. He is also the host of LIHSA’s
annual “Cemetery of Lost Souls” fundraiser, which he holds at his home in Massapequa Park. The event is supported by a number of Long island institutions including WBAB radio and the Halloween Home Haunters of Long Island.
Spring is almost here and residents are invited to take part in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Summer Adult Co-Ed Badminton and Adult Co-Ed Volleyball Programs. The programs are open to players who are 18 and older and will be held at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center. The volleyball program starts on Tuesday, April 5th and will be conducted on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9 to 10:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. The badminton program starts on Thursday, April 7th, and will be held on Thursdays and Sundays from 8:30
to 10:30 p.m. and Fridays from 9 to 10:30 p.m. The programs, which are 12 weeks in duration, are $75 for residents and $100 for non-residents. Proof of residency is required for the discount. The Adult Co-Ed Badminton Program and the Adult Volleyball Program provide an incredibly healthy and competitive atmosphere for residents. The programs not only offers residents health benefits but a social outlet for making new friends. Registration for both programs will take place at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic
Center, 167 Broadway in Hicksville, on Tuesday, March 15th and Thursday, March 17th from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, March 19th from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. COACH HONORED - Long time hockey coach Ronald H. Stoever was recently presented with a citation in honor of his thirty years of service as a coach for the Town of Oyster Bay’s Ice Hockey Program. The recognition for Ronald was held during the Town of Oyster Bay’s Family Skate Night held at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage. Ronald’s efforts over the years have empowered young people to hone athletic skills and develop the character and drive necessary to achieve their goals.

VOICES OF DEMOCRACY - The William M. Gouse Jr. Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) Post 3211’s Annual Voice of Democracy & Patriot’s Pen Awards Night was recently held at VFW Post 3211 in Hicksville. Several local legislators joined members of the VFW Post and members of the Hicksville Public School Board in congratulating the young winners of the Patriot’s Pen Award for writing essays that promoted concepts of democracy and patriotism.
YOGA OFFERED - Plainview-Old Bethpage School District’s H.B. Mattlin Middle School recently began offering yoga to students as part of the physical education program. More than 25 seventh grade students learned and practiced different yoga poses with teacher Robin Gasbarro. The class consisted of a series of stretches, poses and balance challenges. Yoga can help develop concentration and focus as well as refine balance and coordination.
An exciting matchup of premier Division III college lacrosse teams will take place in the Town of Oyster Bay. The Town will host the 2016 Supervisor’s Lacrosse Challenge on Saturday, March 12th, at John J. Burns Park, located on Merrick Road in Massapequa. The event features a game between the NCAA men’s lacrosse forces from Union College and Springfield College. It will begin at 1:00 p.m. with the teams playing for the right to claim the Supervisor’s Trophy. Lacrosse fans of all ages are sure to enjoy this special event featuring a matchup of two highly respected collegiate lacrosse programs. It is an opportunity for local residents to see some of the finest young talent in the sport. The Union College men’s lacrosse team is led by Head Coach Paul Wehrum, who is a member of the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame (Class of 1999). He owns a career mark of 9849 (.667) in nine seasons at Union. He owns the best winning percentage
in program history and ranks second in career wins. According to a preseason poll by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association, Union College currently ranks 12th in Nation in Division III. Last year, the Dutchmen finished with a 14-5 record and ranked 15th. They were runnersup in the Liberty League tournament and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Springfield College Men’s Lacrosse Program, under the direction of head coach Keith Bugbee, has won 8 straight NCAA Championship Berths from 2008 to 2015. Bugbee will enter his 33rd season as the team’s coach and his record stands at an impressive 353-169 (.676 winning percentage). They are routinely considered among the finest teams in the country. Springfield College’s athletic teams are known as the “Pride” and are members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and play in the competitive New England Women’s
and Men’s Athletic Conference. In addition to the outstanding collegiate game, young players will be treated to a Town of Oyster Bay Free Youth Clinic at 11:00 a.m. Kevin Sheehan, a nationally recognized coach will lead the clinic. Sheehan is the 2011 Recipient of U.S. Lacrosse Award for Most Creative Youth Coach, coached Adelphi University to three lacrosse national championships and two Empire State Long Island Girls Championship Teams. He also coached two Bronze Medal Australian World Teams and has authored numerous articles on youth coaching. Lacrosse is very popular among with the Town of Oyster Bay’s youth and we are very pleased that the Town is presenting this fun day for our residents to enjoy. Admission is free for Town residents, but all attendees are encouraged to bring cans of food, which will be donated to Island Harvest to benefit the fight against hunger.

Registration is now underway for the Town of Oyster Bay’s spring night softball men’s league hosted by the Town’s Department of Parks. According to Councilman Pinto, the Town of Oyster Bay’s men’s softball league is widely respected and offers players the thrill of competition and a great form of exercise. Not only is the league very well organized, but players will get to play on fields that many consider to be among the finest in the country. These night-time softball games offer friendly competition and a great recreational and social outlet for all
participants. The Men’s softball league generally plays Monday through Thursday, with games starting between 8:00 and 9:00 p.m., in addition to the occasional Saturday game. Please be aware that game times and locations will vary throughout the season. Only teams with completed registration requirements will be given consideration. Any team looking to register must also submit insurance certificates (MAIL-IN ONLY) as proof of insurance, along with an endorsement of the policy. All fees and proof of insurance are due no later

Residents interested in maintaining or improving their levels of fitness are invited to take part in the Town of Oyster Bay’s popular spring fitness programs, which will be returning this April, according to Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone. The spring fitness classes are for individuals 18 years of age or older and will be held at the Hicksville Athletic Center. These fitness programs provide a terrific form of aerobic exercise that builds strength as well as increases general flexibility. Courses available include Zumba, yoga and cardio kickboxing. Registration for the Spring Fitness programs
will take place at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center (167 Broadway, Hicksville) from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22nd and Thursday, March 24th, and from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 26th. Following these dates, registration will continue at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center, based on availability. Each program is 10 to 12 weeks in length with a fee of $60 for residents and $70 for non-residents. Zumba classes will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. on Mondays (starting Monday, April 4th), and 7:45 to 8:45 p.m. on Wednesdays (starting Wednesday, April 6th). The yoga classes will be held on Mondays from
10 to 11 a.m. (starting April 4th), Tuesdays from 8 to 9 p.m. (starting April 5th) and Saturdays from 9 to 10 a.m. (starting April 9th).The cardio kickboxing classes will be held on Mondays from 8 to 9 p.m. beginning on April 4th. These healthy fitness programs are very popular among participants because they can enjoy these exercises while meeting new people who also enjoy staying in shape. Attendees sampled delicious cuisine, expertly prepared and served by
dozens of Village parents. There were pierogi from Poland, Indian samosas, sushi from Japan, and many other scrumptious dishes. In addition, attendees enjoyed an array of internationally themed performances, from Bollywood-inspired

Learn to Skate levels. The program is eight weeks in length with the exception of Sunday classes which are prorated for seven weeks. All classes are 30 minutes in length. For residents, the fee is $135 for the session. For non-residents the fee is $175. The “Learn to Skate” schedule is: Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., Tuesdays & Thursdays 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon, Saturdays from 11:50 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. and Sundays from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. There will be no classes on Sunday, March 27th in observance of Easter Sunday. Registration costs include admission into the session for which you are registered on the day of the lesson, membership in the United States Figure Skating (USFS) Basic Skills Program, USFS record book for new members, and stickers and USFS Badges
