Following a series of six qualifiers, 40 FIRST® LEGO® League teams from across Nassau and Suffolk Counties are set to compete at the SBPLI Long Island Championship at Longwood High School on Sunday, March 4th. During the event, presented by SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), students (ages nine to 14) and their mentors from the program will present their LEGO robots that best address the “Challenge” set forth in this year’s theme – FIRST HYDRO

DYNAMICSSM. Throughout the season, these teams were among the more than 190 that worked hard to research, design, build, program and test LEGO robots that address a problem within the human water cycle. Students were first tasked with identifying the problem - it could be something as simple as quenching one’s thirst or swimming in a pool, or as complicated as how water is used to produce food, energy and even technology, among other things. Once a problem

was identified, the students then evaluated current solutions that add value to society, developed an innovative solution, and subsequently presented their project to the Judges. In addition, using a LEGO MINDSTORMS® kit, they designed and built a robot to solve missions on the competition tables. FIRST LEGO League introduces young people to the excitement of learning with its partner The LEGO Group. Students are encouraged to explore and pursue science, technology, engineering, and math

(STEM) fields both within the FIRST program and in their future education and careers. Students presented their solutions during one of six different Qualifier tournaments that were held at Great Hollow Middle School and Mineola High School in late January and early February. Teams that competed at the Qualifiers worked to earn an opportunity to advance to the SBPLI FIRST LEGO League Championship at Longwood High School on Sunday, March 4th. The full list of 40

First Lego League Championship teams that earned the chance to compete in the Championship tournament are noted below. These teams will work to earn the chance to advance to the FIRST World Festival in Detroit on April 28th. “We had a great FIRST LEGO League season on Long Island and we are looking forward to our final event at Longwood,” says Stephanie Stern, CoProgram Director and SBPLI/FIRST Long Island representative. “Every year, we are amazed at the skills that our students acquire from this program

– be it teamwork and sportsmanship or science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters, local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders and local village government. They begin the day early, picking up and delivering food donations. The food is then stored, sorted and prepared for the chefs. Volunteers set up, serve and clean after mealtimes. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders

and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup Kitchen announced their decision to become an independent not-for-profit corporation, named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become selfsustaining with a solid foundation of local community support. As they enter this exciting phase, the new corporation will serve our neighbors in the same caring tradition that has been the hallmark of these soup kitchens. Welcome Friends has independently met the challenge to become selfsustaining to ensure that guests need not fear the loss of meals. Under the leadership of the Executive Committee and Kitchen Coordinators, volunteers create a sense of community for neighbors affected by hunger and poverty by serving them with dignity and respect in a safe welcoming environment. Welcome Friends is currently in need of the following volunteer positions: Cooks, Assistant Cooks/ Food Prep and Pick Up/Delivery and a Grant Writer! This organization was formed by the McCann Family of 1-800 Flowers and exists to provide people with developmental disabilities meaningful work in agricultural settings so they can be able to grow and produce in the communities where they live. Jamel S. Johnson was recently named Assistant Principal of the Nassau BOCES Adult Education Program, bringing more than 10 years of experience to the position. The administrator takes the helm after serving as an assistant principal at Richmond Hill High School in Queens. Mr. Johnson began his educational career in 2007 as a teacher of students with disabilities at the elementary level for District 28 in the New York City School system, a mission he devoutly pursued for seven years. While there, he also devoted his time to molding young athletes as a district basketball coach. Within four years, he took on the additional role of Program Director of the 21st Century Day Camp at Queensborough Community College. In 2014, Mr. Johnson moved into the role of

technology teacher for District 28. During that time, the district began to realize his full leadership potential and after only two short years in this position, they selected him for the role of assistant principal. Mr. Johnson said he was drawn to Nassau BOCES by an increasingly growing passion. “Through my work in the New York City schools, I fell in love with career and technical education, so helping to lead this program is a natural fit.” Adult Education is an umbrella under which a number of vital programs operate including Adult Career and Technical Education, Job Placement and Vocational Training. Mr. Johnson would like to see expansion in a number of program areas, such as onsite job training. “One possibility is to bring training directly to our industry partners. We will

continue to expand and grow our offerings for onsite workplace training.” He would also like to expand job placement and recruiting opportunities, ensuring that students will begin their careers upon graduating. “We have a great program here that has the potential to become the industry standard, not only on Long Island,

but throughout the entire state,” Mr. Johnson said. “For example, our medical programs are providing students with wonderful training opportunities, as are plumbing and construction trades. These are high-need areas within the workforce, for which we can provide qualified people to fill important roles.” Mr. Johnson holds a

New AP Appointed bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at New Paltz, a master’s degree in Childhood Education and Special Education from Touro College, and a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Queens College. He also holds a number of certifications as a New York State educator including school building leadership,

general education and education of students with disabilities, as well as IC3 certification in Internet core computing. Kind Words Kind words do not cost much. They never blister the tongue or lips. In like a lion… so blow the winds of March, and with them, promises of springtime blossoms nurtured by the warmth of the sun. But until then, we must contend with the last of winter’s storms, cold and rainy as they may be. Seems to be a metaphor for life as a whole, this month of transition which ushers us out of the doldrums of our hibernation into newfound energy and possibility. Of course, change is not necessarily seasonal, nor is it always dictated by Mother Nature, but the symbolism holds true nonetheless. Being of Irish descent, one of the more notable milestones has always been St. Patrick’s Day; however, upon visiting the Emerald Isle several years back, I was

intrigued to learn that the date holds little significance for those who reside across the Atlantic. The celebration which ensues on the main streets of many cities in America is, in fact, unique to the great U.S. of A. While spring officially arrives in just about two weeks, I have always associated the beginning of the season with the arrival of the Easter bunny and all the pastel decor it brings. Once April gets underway, it’s a fast track to warmer days ahead, afternoons spent soaking up the sun on the beach and summer concerts under the stars. But I digress. March, the month of tumult and turmoil, fading out into the serenity of spring. So it flows, and with

it we too are carried on the breeze as it beckons better things ahead. In the words of a quote I recently came across, We do not fear the unknown. We fear what we think we know about the unknown. A wise sentiment indeed. If only we could manage to harness these apprehensions and redirect them into positive motivation and drive to move forward, we would all be in much better position to succeed. Easier said than done, as with most things; but still, worth the effort in changing our mentality. Perhaps in the spring. ’Til then, stay warm and dry and enjoy these last few weeks of winter. And then, out like a lamb… to brighter days just over the horizon.

The days are getting longer and the temperature is warming. This means that Daylight Savings Time will soon begin, and New Yorkers will set their clocks forward one hour on March 11th. The Firemen’s Association of the State of

New York (FASNY) urges all New Yorkers to take this opportunity check their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to ensure their homes are properly protected. If alarms have removeable batteries, those batteries should be

replaced. Alarms equipped with sealed-in batteries should be tested to ensure they are in proper working condition. Alarms that are more than 10 years old should be replaced. At the end of 2015, Governor Andrew Cuomo

signed a bill into law that will require all smoke alarms sold in New York State to be equipped with sealed-in, non-removable batteries that last for at least 10 years. The new law will take effect in 2019 and marks an important step in improving New York’s fire safety. According to research from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), three of every five home fire deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms, and the vast majority of smoke alarm failures are due to dead or missing batteries. Ten-year smoke alarms require little maintenance, and unlike alarms with removable batteries, they are nearly impossible to deactivate. Regardless of the type of alarm in one’s home, FASNY urges everybody to take some time and ensure their alarms are in proper working order. “Smoke alarms are the single most importance appliance found in every home,” said FASNY

Spring Into Safety President Ken Pienkowski. “FASNY urges all New Yorkers to conduct routine, simple maintenance to ensure these lifesaving devices are in proper order. We strongly encourage New Yorkers to install 10-year smoke alarms, which cannot be easily deactivated. Equally important is installing and maintaining carbon monoxide alarms, which are also critical in protecting life.” FASNY smoke & CO alarm tips: • Test alarms at least once a month by using the test button. • If you have an alarm with a removable battery, be sure to check the batteries every six months, and change the batteries every year. If a battery is starting to lose its power, the unit will usually chirp to warn you. Do NOT disable the unit. • Vacuum or blow out any dust that might

have accumulated in the unit. • NEVER borrow a battery from an alarm to use somewhere else. • NEVER paint a smoke or CO alarm. • Install at least one smoke alarm on every floor of your home, including the basement, and in, or near each sleeping area. • Smoke alarms should not be installed near a window because drafts could interfere with their operation. • Families should also develop and practice a home fire escape plan. • Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for testing smoke alarms and replacing the batteries. Safe Boating Sessions Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson invite residents to take advantage of a new Boating Safety Seminar offered in late March at local Town Community Centers. The seminar is being offered by the Department of Public Safety Bay Constable Unit, and will include topics related to safe operation, regulations, responsibilities of boat ownership and operation. The seminar is free for Town residents. Supervisor Saladino stated, “This Boating Safety Seminar offers participants the fundamentals of safe boating operations. The course is recommended for all boaters and required by New York State for all personal watercraft operators.”

Too many people take their boats out onto the water without proper preparation,” said Supervisor Saladino. “The boating safety tips offered at this course can help save lives by ensuring boaters are properly prepared before they leave the dock.” Participants can choose between one eight-hour session and two four-hour sessions. · Session 1 will be offered from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Tuesday, March 20th and Monday, March 26th. Both classes must be attended in Session 1, which will be held at the Hicksville Community Center. · Session 2 will be offered on Saturday, March 24th, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Marjorie Post Park Community Center. “History has shown us that too many people take

their boats out onto the waters without proper preparation and training to,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “The tips offered at this Boating Safety Seminar can help save lives by ensuring boaters are properly prepared before they leave the dock.” Participants must be a minimum of 10 years old to participate in the seminar. Classes are free, but advanced registration is required. Safe Boating Courses are required for motor boat operators born on or before May 1st, 1996. The course is also required for personal watercraft (Jet Ski) operators, who must be a minimum of 14 years of age. With the recent tragedy in Parkland, FL still touching our hearts and in our minds, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that the Town Department of Public Safety – in partnership with the Nassau County Police Department – will host two Situational Awareness Lectures for residents to recognize potential warning signs and learn proactive survival strategies during active shooter incidents. Lectures will take place on Thursday, March 8th at 7pm at Town Hall North in Oyster Bay, and on Thursday, March 22nd at 7pm in the community center at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa. Residents are welcome to attend either seminar. Supervisor Saladino stated, “Terrible tragedies throughout our nation have left residents feeling very uneasy. While we all hope to never face

such an active shooter situation, residents can take this opportunity to learn survival strategies and recognize potential warning signs of violent individuals. The safety of our children and residents is of utmost concern and working with the Nassau County Police Department we will continue to advance education and preparedness measures.” By focusing on situational awareness, the 90 minute lecture encourages participants to be vigilant for suspicious behavior which could be indicators of a future attack. The curriculum discusses pre-operational surveillance, acquisition of bomb making materials, the importance of reporting suspicious persons, packages and vehicles and other indicators of terrorism. Instructors will also present information on the “See Something Say Something” campaign and stress the importance

of Suspicious Activity Reporting through contact with local law enforcement agencies. Ultimately the lecture builds toward providing participants with actions to take when confronted with an active shooter situation. During training, instructors will provide a historical review of national active shooter incidents and identify best practices learned from the after action reports. An active shooter is defined as an armed person who has used deadly physical force on other persons and continues to do so while having unrestricted access to additional victims. This could include deadly physical force by means of a gun, knife, or other weapons. Volleyball League Registration Hempstead Town Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney wants to make sure residents know that registration is now open for Hempstead Town’s first-ever Co-Ed Beach Volleyball League, which will begin at Town Park Point Lookout in May. “I am so proud to be launching this fun new activity that will keep residents healthy and fit, in my district,” said Councilwoman King Sweeney. “What says summer on Long Island more than a great game of beach volleyball?” The 10-week program is open to all Town of Hempstead residents, 18 years of age and older. Games will be played in the evening at beautiful Town Park Point Lookout. Co-ed teams of 4’s and 6’s are welcome. There will be both Tuesday and Thursday leagues and

both competitive and recreational divisions are available. Each player will receive a t-shirt. There are many benefits of playing volleyball. Itl is a great way to exercise many different parts of the body and is a fun way to burn calories. Harvard Medical School reports a person can burn up to 480 calories during an hour-long game of beach volleyball. The sport also allows players to develop great team-building skills and improves balance, hand-eye coordination and reflexes. “I am a very strong supporter of the American Heart Association and volleyball is a great way to stay heart healthy. Lectures will take place on Thursday, March 8th at 7pm at Town Hall North in Oyster Bay, and on Thursday, March 22nd at 7pm in the community center at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa.

Residents are welcome to attend either seminar. Supervisor Saladino stated, “Terrible tragedies throughout our nation have left residents feeling very uneasy. While we all hope to never face such an active shooter situation, residents can take this opportunity to learn survival strategies and recognize potential

warning signs of violent individuals. The safety of our children and residents is of utmost concern and working with the Nassau County Police Department we will continue to advance education and preparedness measures.” By focusing on situational awareness, the 90 minute lecture encourages participants to

be vigilant for suspicious behavior which could be indicators of a future attack. The curriculum discusses pre-operational surveillance, acquisition of bomb making materials, the importance of reporting suspicious persons, packages and vehicles and other indicators of terrorism. Instructors will also present information

on the “See Something Say Something” campaign and stress the importance of Suspicious Activity Reporting through contact with local law enforcement agencies. Ultimately the lecture builds toward providing participants with actions to take when confronted with an active

100 Days of Learning Kindergartners throughout the Bethpage School District commemorated their 100th day of learning by participating in a day full of activities on February 13th. To prepare for the day, students created eclectic projects based on the theme of “100.” They fashioned plants using 100 lollipops, glued 100 items – including crayons, stickers and Band-Aids – to T-shirts, and made a large

Hershey’s Kiss out of 100 of the bite-sized chocolate candies. During the celebration, the young students engaged in lessons that incorporated math, literacy and creativity. They practiced counting by 10s to craft a monster with 10 different body parts, made necklaces with 100 Froot Loops as beads and built a tower out of 100 plastic cups, among other activities. They also designed “100

Days Smarter” crowns and medals and used their sight words to write about what they have learned in their first 100 days of school. Carrying the theme over to their wardrobe, the kindergartners paraded through the hallways sporting clothing and accessories that represented the milestone number and dressed as centenarians complete with canes, hair rollers and glasses.

entertainment, education and activities. Donning “Thoughtful Thursday” T-shirts, students in grades K-5 crafted get-well cards with positive messages and cheerful illustrations to brighten the day of children in need.

French Students Celebrate In observance of the Carnival season, Ronny Ciarniello’s French classes at Bethpage High School recently celebrated Mardi Gras. The students prepared for Fat Tuesday by learning about its history

and traditions, as well as exploring the celebrations held in various Frenchspeaking countries and New Orleans. On February 13th, the students received beads in the traditional Mardi Gras colors of purple,

green and gold. Donning their colorful necklaces, they enjoyed a variety of French cuisines in the auxiliary gymnasium, which had been decorated for the festive occasion with masquerade masks, banners and centerpieces.

“I’d like to say that our engagement story was picture-perfect but, the truth is our engagement was as real life as it gets. Kurt was coming over and, on his way in, he gave me a package from “outside” that he said must had been delivered. I didn’t think too much of it; I figured it was something I had ordered for Christmas. I opened it up and there was a box of Lucky Charms with a very legitimate looking letterhead. It said that I was a winner of their “Marshmallows Only” contest, which I had entered religiously over past few months since their promotion started. I was so excited that I put down the letter before I finished reading it, and took out two bowls for him and I to enjoy. A few minutes passed and he asked me if I read the letter and I answered him “yes” - but the truth is I didn’t. I was too involved in my marshmallow winnings to be concerned about the invoice. He picked it up and said to me that I won a prize. I answered him, “Of course I won a prize, we are eating it! Marshmallows are the best prize ever!” I took the letter from him and finished reading it. It said “Congratulations Ms. Titcomb! Please take the prize at the bottom of the box as a token of our appreciation!” I reached in the box and pulled out a little blue velvet box, and when I turned around, he was down on one knee and asked me for my hand in marriage. I was so surprised I wanted to scream with joy, but I still had a mouthful of marshmallows and started to choke a little bit. He asked me if I was okay and to please not throw up on him. I was finally able to stop coughing and he looked up at me - still down on one knee because I had forgotten to answer him! I finally realized and said, “Yes, 100 million times, YES!” He got up and we kissed and I was crying tears of pure joy! I realized he had painstakingly hand-picked out hundreds of marshmallows over weeks and weeks to give me the absolute sweetest, thoughtful engagement I could have ever imagined. It may not have been picture-perfect for everyone, but it couldn’t have been more perfect for us. Sometimes things don’t always go exactly as planned, but with a little bit of luck and a heart filled with love, memories like this will surely be cherished forever!”
