Dr. Flescher is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Preventive Medicine and English, and he is a member of the Core Faculty in the Program in Public Health at Stony Brook Medicine. The AAP’s annual awards program, established in 1976, recognizes the very best in professional and scholarly publishing in more than 40 categories. The PROSE Award entries are judged by peer publishers, librarians, and medical professionals. “I’m stunned to receive this award for my book, which in essence about the subtle but far reaching consequences of human inaction,” said Dr. Flescher. “I am deeply grateful for all of the insightful people at Stony Brook and elsewhere with

whom I conferred over the last four years about the topic and those who helped me to refine my thinking at every stage of the project.” In the acknowledgements section of his book, Dr. Flescher explains that the book is a result of exploring the nature of evil over the past decade with students and colleagues. “Rather than asking about its quantitative reduction or qualitative reinterpretation, I am interested in what we do with the fact of evil. What is a morally constructive model for dealing with the problem of evil? What are the best resources within our religious and moral traditions for thinking about evil in a manner conducive to human flourishing? Whence the motivation for another book about evil,” writes Dr. Flescher in the book’s

introduction. Dr. Flescher uses four models to help the reader understand the concepts of moral evil: the presence of badness, the presence of goodness, the absence of badness, and the absence of goodness, which he explores in the first four chapters. In the fifth and final chapter, Dr. Flescher explores evil as inaction and the achievement of moral betterment to help overcome evil. In a review of Dr. Flescher’s book, Diana Fritz Cates, PhD, Professor and Chair, Department of Religious

Studies at the University of Iowa wrote, “What is moral evil, and why do people so often fall into its clutches? Flescher’s analysis is penetrating and ethically unflinching. At the same time, it reflects great compassion. This book ought to be read by everyone who longs for goodness and is pained by its absence.” Dr. Flescher has written two other books, Heroes, Saints, and Ordinary Morality and The Altruistic Species: Scientific, Philosophical, and Religious Perspectives of Human Benevolence.

The Town of Oyster Bay 2013-2014 Distinguished Artists Concert series continues in March with a number of performances at various libraries throughout the Town. On Sunday, March 9th, at 2 p.m., at the Hicksville Public Library, located at 169 Jerusalem Ave, in Hicksville, residents will have the chance to enjoy a salute to legendary divas, in a performance entitled Sister Act. On Saturday, March 15th, at 8 p.m., The Long Island Brass Guild will perform American Music in a performance titled “From Rags to Renaissance” at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library, located at 999 Old Country Road,

Plainview. On Sunday, March 16th, at 2 p.m., classical pianist, Vladmir Zaitsev will perform popular classic and pop arrangements in a concert titled From Baroque To Beatles. This performance will take place at the Farmingdale Public Library, located at 116 Merritts Rd, in Farmingdale. On Sunday, March 23rd, at 2 p.m., Banjo Rascals will perform a variety show of songs ranging from Scott Rags to the contemporary music of Van Morrison at the Bethpage Library located on 47 Powell Ave, Bethpage. music sound to the Jericho Public Library, located at 1 Merry Lane, in Jericho. As we wave goodbye to winter, it is easy to forget that there are people out there without a home, food or even shoes. The homeless are at an exponential disadvantage when it comes to adverse weather. We often complain about the trials of winter, but do we really have it so bad? Just having a house to go back to at the end of the day is an asset that we all take for granted. Many people don’t have heat. There is no relief at the end of an afternoon commute. Sure, they have no driveway to shovel, but they also

end up sleeping on the streets in the middle of a snowstorm. A few weeks ago, I took part in a Midnight Run. We went to the city and gave out bags of clothes to those who needed them the most. They were eternally grateful for our contributions. One man even tried to give us a thank you gift. Despite the fact that they have so little, the homeless people that we met proved to be some of the most generous. Even though some people regard them as “bums,” the homeless are fighting an uphill battle each and every

Accepting Applications celebrating the ten-year anniversary of the ‘Kids of Distinction’ program the Kids Helping Kids Scholarship Committee will award ten (10) - $2000 scholarships this year. “The concept of the program is to recognize kids for taking part in activities done on their own initiative,” Philip said. “Last year’s group of winners certainly fit the bill, many going above and beyond the call of duty to help others in their community.” The ‘Kids of Distinction’ program focuses on activities participated in outside of school. These activities should have, in some way, benefited the community. “For nine years, we

have recognized a diverse group of students who really demonstrated caring and compassion to those around them,” Supervisor Venditto said. Robert added, “We are confident that this year’s scholarship winners will be equally compassionate and worthy of this honor. To date Kids Helping Kids has distributed $48,500 in academic scholarships to help these students fund their college education and in these tough economic times every dollar helps.” Nominees will be placed in two categories, those currently in fifth through eighth grade and those in grades nine through 12. The age groups were established so nominees

can be evaluated fairly against their peers. Five winners will be selected in each category by a committee organized by Kids Helping Kids. “There are so many wonderful young people living in the Town of Oyster Bay who not only demonstrate academic or extracurricular skills, but also do a little something extra to help make the world a better place,” Supervisor Venditto said. “We felt it was important to recognize our young residents who involve themselves in voluntary community, charity or civic activities on their own individual initiative.” Anyone who wishes to nominate a student should fill out a nominating form

and submit it to Kids Helping Kids by Kids Way, Inc., prior to the May 16th 2014 deadline. Nominating forms can be obtained at Town Halls North (Oyster Bay) and South (Massapequa), as well as at local TOB libraries and schools. Flashback To Today By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

East Islip graduate (2001), champion wrestler, motivational speaker and double-leg amputee Rohan Murphy recently spoke with students at JFK Middle School in Bethpage. Students were inspired by Rohan’s athleticism and positive attitude, despite the fact that he had both legs amputated at the age of 4. “No one ever made fun of me, or bullied me when I was in school,”

Rohan said. “But I wanted to overcome my disability and be something great.” He explained how a middle school gym teacher helped to change his life forever by introducing him to the sport of wrestling. “I never quit and I was always willing to work harder than anyone else and take a challenge.” He told students how he worked hard to perfect his wrestling skills and

eventually went on to compete at Penn State. Rohan demonstrated some of his moves for students and illustrated how despite his lack of legs, he could run laps and stay in shape with his teammates. He left students with the words, his motto, “No excuses… anything is possible. If I was able to succeed in life without any legs, why can’t you succeed?”

There seems to be an obsession lately, especially on social networking sites, with “flashbacks” and “throwbacks” to times that, in hindsight, were happier and simpler. These moments are shared in the form of photos, videos, reminiscences of milestones and markers, all subtle indications that, for whatever reason, we are not overly happy in the now. But what of the present day? Some would contend that, to borrow from Billy Joel, this is the time to

remember (cause it will not last forever…la, la, la). And they would be correct. Difficult as it may be to step back and appreciate our current situation, whatever it may be, we may find that it was quite ideal in hindsight. No one knows what the next year, or month, or week, or even day, will bring. And there’s really not much sense dwelling on this vast unknown, as much of it is beyond our control. The important things, like family and friends and health and happiness… unfortunately, we can only do so much to maintain our little bubble

of complacency before some outside force pops it. They say you should find the positive in everything, make the most of adverse situations, and do at least one thing each day for you… but how many of us do? No, we would rather move robotically through life, obsessing over each obstacle, letting the slightest bump in the road throw us completely off course. One day, today will be the flashback we choose to highlight on some virtual “wall.” Let’s try enjoying it in real time.

Ride for Life, an organization dedicated to fighting ALS, has announced that it will honor St. Joseph’s College (SJC) and Gail Lamberta, Ph.D., associate academic dean and chair of the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies at SJC in the Education category at its Annual Ride for Life Kick-Off Fundraiser on Thursday, March 20th, at Lombardi’s on the Sound in Port Jefferson. Established in 1998, Ride for Life is a 150-mile wheelchair and scooter ride from Montauk to Manhattan to benefit those affected by ALS, also

known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Each year, Ride for Life, led by patient and advocate Chris Pendergast, has stopped at SJC on its trek across Long Island where the College’s Recreation Club has provided the riders with lunch and, in certain instances, monetary donations. “I am humbled and honored to receive this award recognizing SJC’s support of Ride for Life,” said Dr. Lamberta. “I was introduced to Chris Pendergast through a

dear friend more than 20 years ago and have always admired his dedication, commitment and courage. Chris is a remarkable human being and has touched so many lives throughout his journey as an educator and with Ride for Life.” This year’s Ride for Life event will begin on Monday, May 5th, with a brief stop on the way at SJC’s Long Island Campus on Wednesday, May 7th.
