Daylight Saving Time March 8 Most parts of North America will begin Daylight Saving Time on March 8, 2020, at 2:00 a.m., respective to their time zones. In the European Union, “Summer Time” begins at 1:00 a.m. on the last Sunday in March, which this year will be March 29. The change is made at the same absolute time across all time zones respective to Greenwich Mean Time, which also is known as Universal Time. One reason
DST is still practiced in many areas of the world is to push an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening and make better use of this daylight. There are various origin stories linked to DST, including one that involves Benjamin Franklin. DST also has been touted as a way to save resources during times of war or as a means to helping farmers be more prosperous. However, despite the many
proclaimed benefits of DST, there are many detractors who insist that there are no perceived benefits. Some of these DST naysayers say switching the clocks twice a year can negatively affect the body’s natural circadian rhythm. Various efforts both domestically and abroad have been instituted to abolish DST, but as of 2020, it remains on the calendar.

POBJFKHS National Honor Society to Host Community Night Event Plainview-Old Bethpage’s John F. Kennedy High School National Honor Society (POBJFKNHS) is giving back to their community in a major way. On Sunday, March 8 at 3 p.m., the school’s National Honor Society chapter will be hosting a Community Night fundraising event at the Long Island Nets game. Five dollars from every ticket purchased through POBJFKNHS will go towards the chapter’s efforts to raise money for its “Feed the Funnel” event scheduled for Saturday, March 28. The Oyster Bay Town Board has declared that the Draft Environmental Impact Statement of the 26.4-acre mixed-use Heritage Village project complies with state and town law, and set a public hearing date for Tuesday, March 10th at 7pm at Hicksville High School Auditorium, located at 180 Division Avenue in Hicksville. The developer will present an overview of the project at the public hearing, and the Town Board will listen to comments from the public.
To ensure all residents have an opportunity to comment, three minutes will be afforded to each speaker. This process does not mean the project has been approved; such consideration will be made by the Town Board after the public comment period has concluded. Seritage, a real estate investment trust spun off by Sears Holdings, has proposed demolition of the Sears department store and Auto Center at 195 North Broadway. The site would become home to 425 rental
apartments, retail and office space, restaurants, a grocery store, cinema, fitness center and foodservice kiosks. The existing TD Bank and Chipotle restaurant would remain on the site. The proposed development includes approximately 5 acres of green space. With the Town Board’s declaration that the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) is complete for purposes of commencing public

Be Safe When Lightning Strikes A change in seasons often brings about a change in the weather as well. Seasons marked by increased humidity in the air and warmer temperatures often usher in afternoon or evening thunderstorms. With those thunderstorms come potentially dangerous lightning. The National Weather Service says lightning strikes the United States roughly 25 million times a year, killing an average of 47 people each year. Worldwide, lighting kills as many as 2,000 people every year, states National Geographic. Even though the odds of being struck by lightning are low, certain factors put people at greater risk. Florida is considered the “lightning capital” of the United States, so residents of the Sunshine State should always exercise extreme caution upon seeing lightning. Residents of Alabama, Colorado, North
Carolina, and Texas also must be extra cautious when lightning strikes. To stay safe, remember the mantra, “When thunder roars, go indoors.” In addition, the following precautionary measures can help people stay safe when lightning strikes. •Postpone outdoor activities if the weather forecast calls for thunder-storms. You also can use the 30-30 rule. After you see lightning, start counting to 30. If you hear thunder before you reach 30, go indoors. Suspend activities for at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder, offers the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. •Avoid open areas outside. Do not be the tallest object in a field or area. Also, stay away from isolated tall trees, utility poles and towers. •If no shelter is available, crouch low with as little
of your body touching the ground as possible. •Lightning can travel through indoor plumbing, so avoid using water during a thunderstorm. Similarly, lightning can travel through electrical systems, like phones, radios and television reception systems. •A car can be a safe place to stay if no other non-concrete shelter is available. •Recognize that all thunderstorms produce lightning. Just because you can’t see lightning doesn’t mean it’s not there. •Get out of pools or other bodies of water. Water is an excellent conductor of lightning. •The human body does not store electricity, says the Insurance Information Institute. Therefore, if a person is struck, you can safely offer first aid. Lightning is no joke and never something to take lightly.

RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS DAY - Town Councilwoman Laura L. Maier and the Town Board proclaimed ‘Random Acts of Kindness Day’ in the Town of Oyster Bay as Monday, February 17th, a nationally-recognized holiday. As part of this Random Acts of Kindness initiative, the Councilwoman recognized deserving individuals who made a difference in their communities. The Councilwoman recognized Massapequa Park resident Amy Recco, together with Massapequa residents Michael Dell’Anno and Gregg Thomas, for their mutual efforts to collect over 1,000 toys for Cohen Children’s Medical Center through the Mighty Mason’s Warriors Initiative. The Councilwoman and Councilman Lou Imbroto further recognized Plainview resident Jay Asparro, who ran 100 miles over 24 hours in November and raised nearly $100,000 for the Long Island Alzheimer’s and Dementia Center. Asparro took on the initiative in memory of his late grandmother, Ann Asparro, who died of Alzheimer’s.

Pets bring much joy to the lives they touch. So it should come as no surprise that the 2019-2020 National Pet Owners Survey, which was conducted by the American Pet Products Association, found that about 85 million families in the United States own a pet. In Canada, 7.5 million households are home to companion animals, states the PetBacker blog. Pets offer companionship and unconditional love. While they are fitting for any family, seniors may find that having a pet is especially beneficial. The organization A Place for Mom, which helps match families with senior living residences, says pets provide a comfort system that produces measurable health results. Caring for pets and being around them can produce a chemical chain reaction in the brain that may help to lower stress hormones while also increasing production of the feelgood hormone serotonin. This is not the only health benefit pets may provide. A recent study from the Mayo Clinic, which looked at 1,800 people between the ages of 25 and 64 who had healthy hearts, found that almost half owned a dog. Having a dog was likely to spur heart-healthy behaviors, like exercising with the pet, eating well and having ideal blood sugar levels. Pets also provide emotional support and companionship that can help seniors — including those who may be divorced or widowed — feel more secure and happy. The National Poll on Healthy Aging found that, among respondents who had pets, 88 percent said their pets helped them enjoy life, and 86 percent said their pets made them feel loved. Seniors considering getting a pet can explore the many benefits to doing so. • Reduce pain: A 2012 study published in Pain Magazine found therapy dogs provided “significant reduction in pain and emotional distress for chronic pain patients.”
• Feeling of purpose: Caring for an animal not only stimulates physical activity, but it also can give seniors a reason to get up and go, which equates to a feeling of purpose. • Altered focus: Having a pet can help seniors focus on something other than physical or mental health issues and preoccupations about loss or aging, according to New York-based psychologist Penny B. Donnenfeld. • Increased physical activity: Pets require care, and that interaction can get seniors moving more than if they didn’t have a pet. • Improved health: Ongoing research from Harvard Medical School has found dog owners have lower blood pressure, healthier cholesterol levels and lower risk of heart disease than those who don’t own a dog. • Stick to routine: Caring for pets helps seniors maintain a routine. Having structure after retirement can be important to ward off risk of depression. Staying on top of feeding, grooming and other pet needs also can help prevent cognitive decline. Pets bring many benefits to their owners’ lives, and they may be the perfect remedy for seniors looking for a friend and purpose.

Signs You May Have A Thyroid Problem The thyroid gland plays an essential role in the human body. According to the online healthcare publishing company Medicine.net, the thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in the front of the neck that produces the hormones that regulate metabolism. Six Hicksville High School students won awards at a recent Model United Nations conference held at St. Francis Prep School in Queens. They represented specific countries, made speeches, prepared draft resolutions, negotiated with allies and adversaries, resolved conflicts and navigated the Model UN rules of procedure. Congratulations to the following Hicksville HS students who won awards
based on their respective assignments: •Rani Basnet (UNEP: Sweden, Award – Outstanding Delegate). •Roman Charan (Security Council: Croatia, Award – Outstanding Delegate). •Jack Immanuel (UNESCO: North Korea, Award – Best Delegate). •Pratiksha Malayil (General Assembly 1: Saudi Arabia, Award – Honorable Mention). •Hetvi Patel (NATO:

Hicksville HS Sends 12 To All-County Music Festival Hicksville High School sent 12 of its top studentmusicians to the 2020 Nassau Music Educators Association All-County Music Festival, held at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts in midJanuary. The festival brings music students together from schools throughout Nassau County. To qualify for participation, students must perform at the New York State School Music Association Adjudication Festival and be nominated by their music teachers. A committee of Nassau County music educators make the final All-County selections. “We are very proud of

The Christian tradition of Lent is celebrated across the globe by many different denominations of the faith. Lent is a 40day period of sacrifice that begins on Ash Wednesday and culminates with the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday. Lent is designed to help Christians prepare for Easter through prayer, repentance of sins, almsgiving, denying the ego, and putting and end to sinful practices. Fasting is a component of Lent, as is abstinence from certain behaviors. In fact, in some Western countries, Catholics have been encouraged to adopt forms of abstinence that do not involve food and
drink during Lent. All actions serve as forms of self-denial to mirror the sacrifice Jesus Christ made for his people. Abstaining from alcohol is not mandatory during Lent. That might be traced to ancient times, when wine and other forms of alcohol were safer to drink than pathogen-filled water sources. But many people now choose to give up alcohol for Lent. Today, fasting is primarily reserved for Ash Wednesday and Fridays during Lent, including Good Friday. Adherents may opt to fully fast, but most only eschew meat and poultry as a nod to self-denial, opting for seafood and vegetarian
fare instead. While much focus is placed on what is denied during Lent, it can be an ideal time to reflect on what is gained by living a life in which God is first and foremost. Spending more time in prayer and away from trivial distractions can be a way to live a more faithful life during Lent and beyond. In addition, aspiring to be more Christ-like during Lent can make this special season even more powerful. During Lent, Christians can make a concerted effort to help the poor, work with a charity or volunteer at their church. Lent is a solemn time, but one that can bolster one’s faith.
