Shifting The Stones By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Confucius said, “The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.” Such is the principle of proactivity based upon, of taking small steps to advance great lengths, ultimately. The key, of course, it to begin the process. Complacency is man’s worst enemy; however, settling into such a mindset is perhaps one of the simplest tasks to accomplish. Never mind that “To Do” list – it will be there tomorrow. And the next day. And the day after that. This is closely followed by its evil bedfellow, entitlement; that sense that you somehow deserve more than you have without feeling the need to prove it, or earn it, as the case

may be. Together, these flaws can lead once promising, motivated individuals down a path of bitterness, resentment and arrogance – not a flattering combination. The problem is, you don’t see it happening. You exist day to day, you settle into your routines, and then…well, then you just settle. Plain and simple. Ambition flies out the window, and with it, that drive that propelled you forward for so many years falls flat. As easy as it is to fall prey to this downward spiral, it takes a concerted effort to right the ship and get back on course. This is where the “small stones” come into play. Even something as simple as making lists, outlines of what needs to be done in a

particular time frame, can help. Sometimes, the simple act of checking an item off can make all the difference in turning a gloomy outlook into one of positivity. One item. One stone. One day at a time. And repeat, for as long as it takes to accomplish whatever it is your goal may be, whether something as simple as saving money for a particular item; or perhaps a far loftier ambition to go out and change the world. Whatever it is, however complex, all can be achieved using the same basic steps. So begin. And maintain. And, before you know it, this newfound motivation will become the stuff of habit – the good kind… the kind that leads to a fulfilling and successful life.

BULLYING Bullying is defined as “an overbearing person who habitually badgers and intimidates smaller or weaker people,” according to http:// dictionar y.reference.com/ browse/bullying?s=t. Being a student in seventh grade and a victim of bullying, my definition for bullying is when somebody thinks you are weak, “odd” or strange and makes fun of you for being who you are simply because you are different than them. Bullying is a very serious subject. Many cases of bullying happen each day, and kids do not tell an adult so they can get help putting an end to it. I made this mistake. I did not initially tell an adult, and this lack of action only made it worse for me. If you are getting bullied, you need to tell somebody or

you could eventually become self-conscious and doubt yourself. You could lose selfesteem and believe that you are what the bully says you are and isolate yourself from your friends. You think to yourself when your friends invite you to hang out, “They are only going to turn their backs on me too. I should just stay away from them from now on so they do not bully me.” Your friends may sometimes be the only people to help in these situations. When I was bullied, it was for three years! One in ten people get bullied every day. If you notice somebody being bullied, you need to stand up for them and tell the bully, “Stop it! Leave them alone.” If you are continuing to see somebody being bullied, you need to get an adult

immediately. Sometimes you may think that people are just joking around, but their intentions are to just make fun of you without you actually realizing what they are doing to you. Bullying does not have to be just verbal; it can also be cyber bullying and also physical bullying. In my case, I was verbally bullied. The words hurt dreadfully, but one way of handling it was by talking to my family. This was my way of getting the point that I was being bullied out, and I was able to also communicate my feelings when I talked about my situation. My family guided me in techniques to handle the situation and how to put an end to the bullying. Bullying is a serious subject.

New Partnership Take the first steps toward a career in culinary arts at the new Culinary Institute offered through a partnership between Nassau BOCES Adult Career & Technical Education and Hofstra University Continuing Education. The Culinary Institute provides the opportunity to learn the art and science of quality food preparation from seasoned culinary arts professionals in state-of-the-art teaching kitchens at Nassau BOCES Joseph M. Barry Career & Technical Education Center located in Westbury. Every Monday through Thursday, from 6 -10 p.m., students will learn in an environment that has been praised by industry experts as one of the most sophisticated facilities in the country. The Culinary Institute at Nassau BOCES has within it two schools that each result in a certificate: The School of Culinary Arts and the School for Baking and Pastry Arts. Classes are forming now. These accelerated five-month courses begin March 2nd and end in July 2015. “The Culinary Institute at Nassau BOCES offers the finest in culinary instruction from our award-winning chefs who are delighted to share

their knowledge with eager chefs in training,” said Michele Cohen, Assistant Principal, Nassau BOCES Adult Career & Technical Education. “Culinary is also a growing field, with job opportunities in a variety of areas.” The School for Culinary Arts focuses on the skills needed as a prep cook, line cook or higher administrative position such as sous chef or executive chef. Future chefs will learn the fundamentals, including the use of specific tools, techniques and skills necessary for cold and hot food preparations, sauce, soup, stock and vegetable cookery. Cooks will learn techniques to produce savory food items that incorporate vegetable and starch cookery as well as meat fabrication and entrée-based cooking techniques. Students will also learn basic knife skills and state-of-theart industrial kitchen equipment maintenance. Students in the School for Baking and Pastry Arts will learn the skills needed to prepare for work in bakeries, hotels, catering halls, private specialty shops and other baking and pastry positions. Students in this program will learn the art and science of baking and pastry arts as it pertains to

the production of breads, cakes, pies, desserts and dessert sauces. Each participant will learn the fundamentals of baking and dessert preparation while working with chocolate, icings and batch dough making (including yeast and quick breads). Basic knife skills and state-ofthe-art industrial kitchen equipment maintenance will also be covered. “We are pleased to partner with Nassau BOCES to offer this exciting new program,” says Colleen Slattery, Vice Dean of Hofstra University Continuing Education. “The Nassau BOCES chefs and facilities are top-notch and we are confident that our students will receive the finest education in this growing field.” The curriculum for both schools covers local and national health codes; training for the ServSafe and the Nassau County Board of Health Exam. The Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center is currently offering early bird registration for the Town’s Summer Hockey School program, developed by The Rinx Hockey School at the Town’s Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage, according to Town Councilman Chris J. Coschignano. Hockey enthusiasts can sign up for any number of weekly sessions at discounted prices now through April 1st, 2015, from one week to all eight weeks of the program. “This summer, hockey players in the Town of Oyster Bay will have the unique opportunity to develop and learn new hockey skills in weeklong sessions designed specifically for their talent level,” Councilman Coschignano said. “Parents may register their children now for the Rinx Summer Hockey School, which is not only a great way for kids to spend the summer, but is also an

excellent opportunity for them to fine tune their hockey skills.” C o u n c i l m a n Coschignano commented on the schedule for the hockey school. “The program, which is slated to begin June 29th and run through August 17th, will include a full day of on-ice and off-ice training run by trained hockey professionals. Throughout the week, participants will receive the benefit of 15 to 20 hours of on-ice training and 6 to 8 hours of off-ice training. The program will be broken down into two levels, intermediate and advanced. The intermediate skills program is for ages 5 through 12 and will include 15 hours of on-ice training per week and over 8 hours of training per week off the rink. The advanced session is geared for travel players ages 6 through 14 and includes 20 hours of onice training and 6 hours of training per week off the ice. Both skill programs focus on shooting, passing, agility drills and

field sports. Lunch every day is included. “The Summer Hockey School sessions will be challenging, but will result in newly developed skills for our young hockey players,” Councilman Coschignano said. “Each class will be filled with useful tips and techniques to fully develop each student’s hockey playing abilities.” “The Rinx Summer Hockey School is not only a great way to spend the summer, but an excellent opportunity to fine tune their hockey skills,” Councilman Coschignano said. “Town of Oyster Bay residents receive a 10% discount on any of the training weeks.” Early arrival and late pick up will also be available. The Town of Oyster Bay is participating in a 2015 Soldier Collection Drive in an effort to gather needed supplies to be sent to the men and women serving around the globe and is asking residents to help support the drive, according to Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone, who noted that this is the eighth year the Town is participating in this collection drive. “Last year, Town residents, with the assistance of the CSEA, donated more than 2,000 pounds of much-needed supplies,” Councilman Macagnone stated. “This year, with residents’ support, we hope to surpass that amount.” Anyone interested in donating to the collection drive may drop off items at Town Hall North in Oyster Bay; Department of Public Works (CSEA entrance) in Syosset; Town Hall South in Massapequa; and at the

Syosset High School is home to six extraordinary students who earned a nomination for the 2015 Presidential Scholar Award from the United States Presidential Scholars Program. The award was established in 1964, by executive order of President Lyndon B. Johnson to

recognize and honor some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors. In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts. Each year, up to 141 students are named as

Novel Idea Plainview-Old Bethpage School District’s H.B. Mattlin Middle School fifth grade students recently used Instagram to strengthen their reading comprehension skills. Teacher Stacey Peat designed an Instagramthemed bulletin board for students to post selfies of characters from the books they are reading in class and at home. Students created the

selfies from the point of view of a character during a major event in the story. The activity delivered lessons in character analysis (textual evidence describing physical appearance, moods and actions), summary, point of view and visualization of setting and facial expressions. The students used paper cut-out “likes” to show their appreciation for their

classmates’ work, as they would on Instagram. The school plans on revisiting the program for future fifth grade students. Winter Performance from a variety of genres, from movies to popular music. The band opened with the theme from Star Wars, then continued on to Jingle Bells Jamboree, ending with Radioactive. The melody in this last piece was passed between sections, and the students stood when they had the melody. Their performance was entertaining and informative. The Chorus had the finale for the evening. Under the direction of music instructor Ms.Schwartz, they sang some terrific songs: Jazz Cantante, From the Heart, and Hot Chocolate. Mr. Watarz, the piano accompanist,

provided us with some great improvisation during a section of Jazz Cantante. The students added some gestures to their singing that made things lively and enjoyable. The concert was over all too soon, leaving the audience wanting more; we wait anxiously for the Spring Concert! The orchestra, band, and chorus all appeared to be larger than ever. The music program at Village School continues to be popular with students. Given the ovation during the concert, it’s quite popular with the parents as well. Bravo, Village School!

Winter Photos Wanted Residents are invited to send in their photos for consideration for use in a Town publication. According to Town Councilwoman Rebecca M. Alesia, the current winter season presents many opportunities for photos to be taken. “If you flip through the pages of the 2015 Town Calendar you’ll see some of the many great photos submitted by our residents,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “I encourage everyone to start taking pictures, or go through photos you’ve already taken, depicting the people, places, community events and scenery throughout the Town of Oyster Bay for use in upcoming Town publications.” The Town accepts photos throughout the year for use in various Town publications. Seasonal photos are especially encouraged, as they are used on the Town’s website and also considered for

the following year’s Town calendar, which is mailed to all residents. The Councilwoman went on to say that photos must be taken within the confines of the Town of Oyster Bay. Digital submissions are preferred, but professionally developed photos, not inkjet printouts, may also be submitted. The Village School Winter Concert was recently held at H.B. Thompson Middle School. The Senior Orchestra opened up the performance under the direction of music teacher Ms. Carrella with a rousing rendition of The Star Spangled Banner.
