emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Twilight Wish recipients report that having their wish granted impacted their life for the better. Their mental and physical health often improved, positively changing their outlook on life! The wishes that this organization grants truly changes the way that our society views aging, as it witnesses seniors living life to the fullest. By sharing their recipients’ stories, they inspire both older and younger generations and help bring about a cultural shift in how aging is perceived in our society. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. This organization has continued to do their good work throughout this pandemic. Today they are still helping others and when going to grant a wish, they are taking all the necessary safety precautions. Safety is a top prioity at The Twilight Wish Foundation. There are many ways that you can get involved with this great organization. Stay tuned for next week’s article to learn some of the ways how. T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. Sometimes a wish fulfills an immediate need, and sometimes it is a last wish or lifetime dream. Large or small, all wishes provide a meaningful “thank you” to the senior for a lifetime of service to others. Every wish they grant helps build a culture that values and respects our senior population. The Twilight Wish Foundation has expanded throughout America and they currently have 17 chapters. The majority of their chapter directors and chapter volunteers have fulltime jobs, but volunteer their time because they believe so much in the impact Twilight Wish has on our senior population. Many seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable conditions. Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that! Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Laura Maier invites residents to submit photos taken in the Town of Oyster Bay to be considered for use in Town publications. “Our residents recently received their 2021 Town calendar, which is filled with photos submitted throughout the year depicting people, places, community events and scenery throughout our Town,” said Councilwoman Maier. “We accept photos for the calendar, as well as other Town publications, including our website and brochures.” Councilwoman Maier noted that photos should be taken within the confines of the Town of Oyster Bay. Digital submissions are preferred, but high-quality photos may also be submitted. Emailed photos should be sent to photos@oysterbayny.gov. Printed photos can be submitted to the Town’s Public Information Office, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay NY 11771. Residents should make sure their name, address, phone number and brief description of the photo are included with their submission. Residents Invited To Submit Photos

New Music Software Keeps Remote And In-Person Learners Engaged In-person and remote students taking piano at Hicksville Middle School are learning a new software that’s making the class more engaging. Teachers Caroline Calleo and Adam Nadler have introduced the program, SoundTrap, which allows students to create their own music. SoundTrap contains a library of pre-recorded loops that students can mix with different instruments, to create their own compositions. It’s become

a game-changer for remote learners taking the class, who do not have access to a piano at home. They’re able to stay involved with SoundTrap’s built-in piano software. Remote students can record themselves using their computer keyboards, simulating notes and hand positions as if they were playing a real piano. SoundTrap has also opened up opportunities for in-person learners. The program allows students in

the piano lab to plug a cable into their Chromebooks and record themselves. The recording goes right into SoundTrap where students can generate beats, turning a classical piece into their own rock and roll hit. Moving forward, SoundTrap will continue to be a part of the piano class curriculum, providing an entirely new and creative element for students.

Nursing homes in New York have largely not allowed visitation or group activities since March 2020, but recreation staff at some Long Island nursing and rehabilitation centers have had their creativity in overdrive, coming up with a variety of ways to keep residents active and social. Take the across-thehallway cornhole games at Excel at Woodbury for Rehabilitation and Nursing. In fact, resident Stephen Sorensen still has a pretty good throw from his doorway. Corn Hole competitions are held every Wednesday and usually get about a dozen participants. “Keeping our residents socially engaged is so important during this challenging time,” said Excel Recreation Director Kim Gioia. “It’s a good way to combat loneliness and gives everyone something to look forward to.” In addition to sociallydistancing corn hole games, residents also

play games of bingo and trivia while sitting in their doorway. Personal and caring service that could be described as “acts of kindness” during these trying times are common. There’s Adelphi student Brianna Paino, who serves as a Concierge at Lynbrook Restorative Therapy and Nursing. Before COVID-19 protocols, the bakery in the lobby was visited frequently by residents who wanted to get a sweet treat. But now Brianna makes the bakery run for residents. Resident roommates Caroline Manna, 97, and Cornelia Mason, 76, look forward to getting their bakery items from Brianna but even more, they look forward to her visits. “It’s a small gesture that I enjoy doing for Mrs. Manor and Mrs. Mason and knowing that they look forward to my visits means so much to me,” said Brianna. At Excel, some of the staff members with musical

talent give impromptu concerts and the music is played throughout the facility. Josh Kovner, a therapeutic recreation assistant at Excel at Woodbury Rehabilitation and Nursing, brings his guitar to work and enjoys playing for the residents. “With COVID-19 rules still prohibiting visitors from the outside, we are doing all we can to give our residents opportunities for socializing, whether it’s through Facetime calls with families, or phone calls,” said Excel Administrator Stacy Altman “Our staff goes above and beyond to provide them with whatever they need, whether it’s a cookie or a visit. Human contact at a time like this is as important as food and water! While nothing can replace a visit from a loved one, we are using our talents and creativity to fill the gap.”

“Freezin’ for a Reason” at TOBAY Beach with COVID-19 Safety Protocols in Place Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino invites residents to be “Freezin’ for a Reason” at a polar plunge benefitting the Special Olympics New York on Saturday, March 13, 2021 at TOBAY Beach. The event, which will include an extensive list of new COVID-19 safety protocols, will feature pre-assigned time slots beginning at 9:30 a.m. “Many of our residents are used to seeing beautiful TOBAY Beach in the middle of the summer, but this event provides an enjoyable and charitable reason to begin the beach season early,” said Supervisor Joseph Saladino. “Participants will have an opportunity to prove their mettle and their compassion by wading into the chilly waters of TOBAY Beach to raise funds for the athletes of Special Olympics New York.” The safety of participants

is of the highest priority for both Special Olympics and the Town of Oyster Bay. This year’s plunge will include comprehensive safety measures that will comply with federal and state guidelines. Instead of large groups, each team will have a personalized polar plunge experience in a controlled safe environment. All spectators and volunteers will be required to wear masks and plungers will wear masks until plunge time. Signage and announcements will also serve as a reminder to maintain social distance and adhere to all safety protocols. All funds raised at the event support Special Olympics New York’s programs and promote awareness of people living with intellectual disabilities in New York. Proceeds will help to provide year-round sports training and competition

in over 22 Olympic-style sports for more than 66,835 children and adults with intellectual disabilities living in New York, giving them continuing opportunities at no cost to them or their families. “This polar plunge is sure to create lasting memories for all participants and support a very worthwhile cause,” added Supervisor Saladino. “Special Olympics New York changes lives through the joy of sports and the Town of Oyster Bay is proud to partner with this outstanding organization to help make this event a success. Pilates and Yoga Classes for Spring 2021 Oyster Bay Town Councilman Tom Hand invites residents interested in maintaining or improving their levels of fitness and range of motion to participate in the Town of Oyster Bay’s Yoga and Pilates Classes at the Hicksville Athletic Center. Classes begin on Monday, April 5th, 2021 for the spring session. All classes are co-ed, open to individuals 18 years of age or older, and run for 10 weeks. Due to COVID-19, class enrollment will be limited to allow for proper social distancing measures. “The Town’s spring yoga and pilates classes are great recreational programs open to residents ages 18 and older, and serve as the perfect opportunity to make new friends and stay physically fit,” said Councilman Hand. “To protect your health and the health of those around you, extra precautions and safety protocols have been put in place to make sure that these fun and enriching programs can operate safely and provide our residents

Environmental Poster Contest for 4th and 5th Graders To raise awareness of pollution and its impact on Mother Nature, Councilwoman Michele Johnson and Councilman Lou Imbroto recently announced a new Environmental Poster Contest open to 4th and 5th grade students in the Town of Oyster Bay. The theme of the poster contest is ‘How Plastic Pollution Harms Our Waterways.’ “This poster contest is a great way to bring more awareness to a critical issue that we are facing today in our environment,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “These posters will not only help inform those who view them, but the simple act of putting together

an entry for the contest will help better inform the students of our Town regarding this issue, and this will be knowledge that they will be able to bring forth with them in their lives to help make a difference as they grow up.” Students should submit a poster to communicate awareness of how items of plastic litter harm our waterways by illustrating the problem of floatables in our waterways. Submissions should be made on large poster paper, with the top three winning posters to be displayed at a Town facility and showcased in a future Town of Oyster Bay Environmental Newsletter. “This contest is being co-

sponsored by The Waterfront Center and Friends of the Bay to help further protect and preserve the environment. Both of these nonprofit organizations have been a huge asset in helping to protect and preserve our waterways,” said Councilman Imbroto. “I encourage all 4th and 5th grade students in the Town to participate in this program, as it offers an opportunity not only to win amazing prizes, but also an opportunity to become more educated on the serious issue of plastic pollution in our waterways.” Prizes will be awarded for the top three submissions, with 1st Place receiving a private tour of Oyster Bay

Harbor aboard a Friends of the Bay vessel, $200 gift certificate for the Waterfront Center in Oyster Bay, a nautical trivia game, and Friends of the Bay apparel. Submission deadline for the contest is Thursday, April 1, 2021, with winners to be announced on Earth Day, April 22, 2021. After these dates, registration will continue based on availability. Each program is 10 weeks in length and costs $60 for residents and $70 for nonresidents. Pilates will be held on Mondays (Tone & Sculpt) from 8pm to 9pm, beginning on Monday April 5th, and Saturdays (Pilates with Props) from 9am to 10am, beginning April 10th. Both pilates classes are designed for beginning and intermediate level participants. Please bring

your own mat and water, all other equipment will be provided. Yoga will be held on Sundays, from 9am to 10am, Mondays, from 10am to 11am, Tuesdays, from 8pm to 9pm, and Saturdays from 9 am to 10 am (this class will be held at the TOB Ice Skating Center in Bethpage.) Yoga classes begin on April 5th, and each class includes stretching, core strengthening, breathing exercises, energy awareness, and meditation and relaxation. Proof of residency is required and the schedule is subject to change. Due to COVID-19, class enrollment will be limited to allow for proper social distancing measures, temperatures will be checked upon entry, face masks to be worn while moving throughout facility, and daily cleaning/ sanitizing will take place before and after each class. An Elevated Risk

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some medical conditions can put people at an elevated risk for certain infections. Heart disease, diabetes mellitus type 1 or 2, chronic lung disease, including COPD, and kidney failure are among the conditions that can increase a person’s risk for certain infections. The CDC notes the importance of recognizing this potential connection, as such a recognition can help

people understand the role vaccines can play in promoting their overall health. It’s also vital that men and women realize the connection between their lifestyle choices and their risk for certain infections. Girls On The Run Continues To Empower Girls On Long Island TLCcompanions.com Now Offering Virtual And In-Person After-School Teams After a successful fall season, Girls on the Run is back this spring with both virtual and in-person options for girl empowerment in the Long Island area. Girls on the Run (GOTR) is a nonprofit that aims to inspire 3rd- to 8th-grade girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident through running and other physical activity. Each GOTR practice is led by trained volunteers who teach important life lessons such as standing up for oneself, setting and achieving goals, and managing emotions. This past fall Girls on the Run quickly adapted its research-based curriculum and engaging programming to serve girls in the community amidst the global pandemic. Practices are already held outdoors. At practices, participants and coaches maintain social distance and utilize extra sanitation materials. On bad weather days, rain dates or virtual lessons that mirror the in-person lessons can be used if necessary. More than 100 girls participated in the fall and coaches, caregivers, and Girls on the Run staff were all inspired by the results. “This has been such a positive experience for our daughter! We have even noticed a very positive change in her overall attitude and behavior!” –Parent of 4th grade fall season participant. “I wasn’t so sure when my husband signed up our daughter for this program as she’s not very athletic, but I was wrong. She really enjoyed it and looked forward

to going to practice every Wednesday and Friday. And the best part, she met new friends. Thank you!” –Parent of 5th grade fall season participant. In the spring, the organization will host both in-person and all-virtual teams during its 8-week program. Thanks to the generosity of donors and sponsors, Girls on the Run is able to offer financial assistance to ensure no girl is ever turned away due to her financial situation.

Like the fall, Girls on the Run will continue to follow protocols to keep girls and coaches safe and adhere to all local COVID-19 guidelines. Flexible programming will allow all in-person lessons to transition to a virtual platform if needed, and a 100% virtual program will also be offered as select sites for the 8-week spring season. Spring 2021 Program This 8-week program begins the week

of March 22. Teams of 3rd-5th grade girls will practice twice a week for 75 minutes. Teams are available throughout Nassau County and parts of Suffolk County. Girls will complete their end-of-season celebratory 5K on Saturday, June 5th at their respective sites, adhering to local guidelines. Registration is currently open as room is available for our 15-person teams. Each session is led by trained volunteer coaches who guide and mentor the girls. The 8-week program concludes with all participants completing a celebratory 5K event which gives them a tangible sense of achievement as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. Tender Loving Cats to the Rescue Tender Loving Cats, a non-profit, a Long Island no-kill kitten and cat rescue run entirely by volunteers, experienced a boom in families stepping up to foster kittens and friendly adult cats over the past year due to the pandemic. This led to many more cats and kittens coming into the adoption program from the streets and finding homes. However, the need for foster families is ongoing. “Fostering is fun, rewarding and saves lives,” said Marge Goldin, a volunteer for the organization. “During ‘kitten season’ which runs April through October, Tender Loving Cats and other rescues get more requests for kitten placement than can be handled. But the number of kittens that can be saved is

limited only by the number of fosters available.” Tender Loving Cats manages all the medical needs of the cats/kittens and provides assistance and support throughout the process. Once they are old enough and socialized, Tender Loving cats uses social media to find them forever homes. No cat or kitten is adopted before they are spayed or neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations. Goldin says that Tender Loving Cats is always in need of volunteers to assist in working 2-hour shifts in the two adoption centers that the organization runs out of two PetSmart locations in North Babylon and West Babylon. “This past year has been especially challenging, as the

number of homeless cats has risen, whether due to people losing their jobs and not being able to care for their cats anymore or moving to other locations and leaving their cats behind,” Goldin said. “We are stretched to the limit, but we are determined to save as many cats as possible. We have a motto at Tender Loving Cats that we rescue the mistreated, save the injured and love the abandoned and we try to do just that.” Occasionally Tender Loving Cats is faced with situations where cats or kittens have serious medical challenges. Blindness, deafness, injury, illness or special medication needs present themselves. Recently, as part of a widespread initiative trying to manage the cat

population at Hofstra University, a volunteer took on the responsibility to foster a kitten born missing its back legs. The volunteer, Claudia Cannam, a Hofstra law student, is currently looking into getting the kitten a prosthesis. Rescues the mistreat Tender Loving Cats has a Trap-Neuter-Return program that targets the feral cat explosion on Long Island. Help for ferals is available in the form of trap rental and assistance with trapping. The rescue also can offer financial assistance to low income cat parents seeking to neuter their pets. The Afghan Americans of New York recently made a generous donation of food supplies to a food delivery service that not only assists individuals with disabilities but is run by them as well. The Nassau County Office of Asian American Affairs assisted in facilitating the donations. FREE POD was formed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic by Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE) to assist people living in

FREE’s group residences and those who live at home with their families. FREE POD helps to get food and supplies in a timely manner to residences. FREE POD also provides individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities with “on the job” employment training in all aspects of food preparation and distribution, inventory control, shopping and stocking. The Afghan organization donated milk, yogurt,

cheese, different types of chicken, meat balls, apples, potatoes and onions. Afghan Americans of New York is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that is composed of the Afghan community in NY, mainly on Long Island. Its mission is to unite and empower Afghan Americans through community service and economic and civic engagement.
