The organization was formed in 1977 as a result of funding obtained from the Town of Oyster Bay, which enabled them to provide street outreach and job placement for youth. Shortly after, they expanded upon their services for youth and have grow to provide a multitude of programs for children, adults, and families through Federal, State, County and private funding streams. Some of their current programs and services are below: Counseling Services: YES CCC believe family involvement and assistance is an integral part of treatment for children, adolescents, and adults. After all, the greatest successes in treatment often occur when all family members recognize their role related to the presenting problem and are open to active participation in the healing and growing process. Available to residents within Nassau County Catchment Areas only. Addiction Services: Comprehensive treatment is available to children, adults and families facing the complex problems of chemical dependency, as well as DWI assessments and specialized recovery groups. Available to anyone. Early Intervention Project: This program offers prevention and early intervention services to teens and their families at the beginning stages of their alcohol or drug experimentation or abuse. Available to residents within Nassau County Catchment Areas only. School-Based Services: YES Community Counseling Center provides Social
Work services to elementary school aged students in various school districts. WISH Program: Women In Shared Healing (WISH) provides comprehensive services for community members who have been physically, sexually and/or emotionally abused, as well as those effected by or witness to domestic violence. Prevention Services: These services are provided to youth, families, parents and community groups and are designed to reduce individual, family and community level risk factors and increase protective factors. Available to residents within Nassau County Catchment Areas only. Parenting Programs: Various programs are offered to assist parents/guardians in raising children. Available to residents within Nassau County Catchment Areas only. YES CCC provides a financial literacy program called Commerce Plaza to students throughout Long Island at their Levittown location. This unique program immerses students in a simulated business community with hands-on experience by assigning them roles and tasks that replicate actual work experience. Students learn about leadership, budgeting, operating a business, banking skills, and teamwork. Since opening in May 2000, Commerce Plaza has hosted over 69,000 students from school districts on Long Island. Available to students in both Suffolk County and Nassau County. 11th Annual All Kids Fair Is Back Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK High School’s DECA Recognized For Outstanding At A New Exciting Venue The All Kids Fair is pleased School-Based Enterprise to announce that this year’s children’s expo will be taking place in person at a terrific new venue. The 11th annual All Kids Fair will be on Sunday, April 3, from 10-4:30, at Samanea New York Mall, formerly The Source Mall, at 1504 Old Country Road in Westbury. Since 2011, the All Kids Fair has been known for being a fun day for kids and their families to spend time together while also learning about opportunities for Long Island-based companies and organizations of interest to them. In 2020, this was run as a virtual event, complete with exhibitors, many interactive classes, and even a virtual petting zoo, with kids “interacting” with the animals over a Zoom-like interface. According to Barbara Kaplan, director of the expo, “every year, this fabulous children’s expo has many draws for Long Island families, and this year will be no different.” The All Kids Fair will have over 60 vendors plus many kidcentered activities, including “cornhole” (beanbag toss) and soccer. Families can interact in person with exhibitors in a huge space, with vendors set further apart and with the activity areas in designated open areas rather than in breakout rooms. Attendee Kitty Chung raved, “You organized a
wonderful event for families. We will be glad to return to have more fun!” Additional activities and attractions include three bounce houses, a petting zoo, face painters, balloon artists, a photo booth, and cotton candy, all included with admission. Jennifer Keegan of Your Local Kids Source, a multiyear sponsor and exhibitor, previously shared that she “had a great time at the All Kids Fair meeting tons of Long Island parents and enjoying all the smiling faces on all the happy kids.” This fun-filled event offers exciting educational and leisure activities to interest kids and their families each year. The Fair has choices for toddlers through high school, including kids who have special needs or are gifted. There will be information about places to play, camps, after-school activities, birthday party
providers, and college planning. A charity drive to benefit The Book Fairies, a 501c3 that provides books to those in need, will return this year. Those who donate gently used or new books or money will receive raffle tickets to win great donated prizes. The Hawks Nest, the student-run school store at PlainviewOld Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School, was among 461 school-based enterprises achieving Gold Certification for the 2021-2022 school year. The Hawks Nest will be recognized during DECA’s International Career Development Conference in Atlanta, GA, making it one of only three New York school-based enterprises to be recognized. A school-based enterprise (SBE) is an entrepreneurial operation in a school setting that provides goods and services to meet the needs of the market. SBEs are managed and operated by students as hands-on learning laboratories that integrate National Curriculum Standards in marketing, finance, hospitality and management. DECA club advisors have utilized this effective educational tool
for over four decades to provide their students with realistic and practical learning experiences that reinforce classroom instruction, enhance 21st century skill development, and prepare students for college and careers. The Plainview-Old Bethpage DECA members who contributed to the certification were Nicole Beinstock, Julia Hall and Dani Pearlman with the assistance of their DECA chapter advisor, Lindsay DeLucca. The SBE at Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK has successfully operated for 20 years. “DECA’s School-based Enterprise Certification Program is a rigorous process designed to help DECA members demonstrate their classroom learning in a practical, learning laboratory, and then translate that into meaningful outcomes,” said Christopher Young,
CAE, Chief Program Officer at DECA Inc. “These DECA members are practicing important workplace readiness skills while preparing for college and careers.” DECA’s School-based Enterprise Certification Program provides recognition for outstanding achievement by schoolbased enterprises and to motivate students to strive for excellence and growth. SBEs can be certified at three levels: bronze, silver or gold. In order to apply for the certification, SBEs must submit extensive documentation that explains how the SBE demonstrates the practice of various marketing and retail standards. A review committee evaluates the documentation to determine which level of certification has been achieved. DECA’s Schoolbased Enterprise programs are sponsored by Intuit and Otis Spunkmeyer Inc.

Sign Up for Plainview Water District’s Emergency Notification System
Water is the most precious natural resource there is, and it is extremely important in everyday life. The Plainview Water District (PWD) Board of Commissioners would like to remind all in the Plainview-Old Bethpage community of the importance of signing up and/or confirming their contact information with the District. This accurate contact information allows residents to receive emergency notifications about their water service in case a situation should ever occur. “The Plainview Water District has the necessary systems in place to immediately reach our residents if a water-related emergency were to occur, however, we can only do so if we have the up-todate contact information,” said PWD Chairman Marc Laykind. “The well-being of our community is extremely important to
all of us at the District, and being able to inform our residents as quickly as possible of a water emergency is crucial.” The PWD utilizes a reverse-911 system, provided by SwiftReach Networks, which is capable of delivering urgent messages directly to residents via phone call, text, or email. Once a resident or local business owner submits their up-todate contact information, the system will be able to contact them with information regarding a water-related emergency in their area. All contact information is securely stored in PWD databases and will only be used in the case of an emergency. To ensure a resident is signed up to receive emergency notifications or to confirm their contact information is accurate, please visit www. plainviewwater.org and fill out the appropriate
form under the tab for “Resources” and then “Emergency Notification System.” The contact information received will only be accessed in the aforementioned circumstances of a waterrelated emergency and will be kept confidential. Labriola And Maier Urge Residents To Donate Blood As National Shortage Impacts Hospitals With hospitals facing a nationwide blood shortage, Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola and Town Councilwoman Laura Maier invite residents to attend a Blood Collection Drive on Thursday, March 10th from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville. Councilman Labriola stated, “Blood supplies have seriously dwindled as a result of the COVID-19 health pandemic and are critically needed for local hospitals to meet the demand and continue saving lives. Please consider participating in this blood drive to help bolster our blood banks and ensure as many
people as possible can be helped. Together, we can give the gift of life though a simple blood donation.” Appointments are preferred for the Town’s Blood Drive. To qualify as a donor, a person must be between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that donors eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. Additionally, all donors will receive a voucher for a free Blizzard at Dairy Queen.
Councilwoman Maier added, “It’s quick, easy, and safe to donate a single pint of blood which can save up to three lives. Abigail Lev, Gabrielle Oliva, and Olivia Schmidt Recognized for Exceptional Research Skills The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District is proud to announce that three seniors from Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School (POBJFKHS) were named three of the top scholars in the country in the Regeneron Science Talent Search 2022, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors. The semifinalists from POBJFKHS are Abigail Lev, Gabrielle Oliva, and Olivia Schmidt. Each scholar was selected from 1,805 applications from 603 high schools across 46 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and 8 other countries. Each scholar receives a $2,000 award with an additional $2,000 going to his or her respective school, resulting in $1.2 million in total scholar awards from Regeneron. “During these most challenging days, the selection of three of our students—Abigail Lev, Gabrielle Oliva, and Olivia Schmidt—as Regeneron Scholars is validation of their work and educational success for our school community,” shared James Murray, Principal of POBJFKHS. “Their research is timely and
relates to issues prevalent in our nation. We couldn’t be prouder of their welldeserved recognition.” Scholars were chosen based on their exceptional research skills, commitment to academics, innovative thinking, and promise as scientists—as evidenced through the submission of original independent research projects and essays. Abigail Lev’s research project is titled The Inadvertent Detrimental Effects of Caucasian Performative Activism on Perceived Societal Marginalization of the African-American Population. Abigail researched the potential detrimental effects of engaging in a flawed form of activism in the self-perceived marginalization of a social group—in this case, African Americans— through a prevalent civil rights issue: the Black Lives Matter movement. The results indicated that continued Performative Activism, or non-action based activism, by the Caucasian community poses a significant psychological risk to the wellbeing of the AfricanAmerican community. Furthermore, this suggests that in situations of social

change, society should aim to employ suitable activism techniques that are not solely performative based actions that enact a positive change. Gabrielle Oliva’s research project is titled The Impact of Ascribed Gender Stereotypes on Public Perceptions of Sexual Assault Victims. The purpose of Gabrielle’s study was to examine the extent to which the public’s reaction toward sexual assault victims (measured through participants’ victim-blaming, empathy, and perceived ability for victims to cope) is impacted by the presence of gender stereotypes in both male and female victims. Results found that stereotypical victims were met with
significantly higher levels of victim-blaming and significantly lower levels of empathy. Additionally, male sexual assault victims who portray traditionally masculine stereotypes received the least amount of empathy and the highest levels of victim blame. These findings can have implications in further understanding social stigmas around sexual assault. Olivia Schmidt’s research project is titled Investigating Detrimental Effects of Text-Based Digital Communication on Emotional Literacy of Adolescents Olivia investigated the effects of using digital, textbased communication on emotional literacy. Results found that human vocal
communication evoked significantly higher levels of empathy compared to texting, but no significant differences in emotion recognition or sympathy, implying that people can recognize the emotions of others, but lack the ability to truly understand and relate to them. This finding suggests that the societal shift towards texting, rather than verbal communication, can have detrimental consequences on human interpersonal relationships. These three extraordinary students have participated in both the POBJFKHS Research Program, as well as the AP Capstone Program, taking such courses as Advanced Placement Seminar, Advanced Placement
Research, Foundations of Research, and Social Science Research Lab. Through each of these classes, their research and analytical skills were further refined. Raymond Tesar, POBJFKHS Lead Research Coordinator, stated he is extremely honored to have worked with all three students over the past four years. “It has been inspiring to work alongside and witness the dedication of these three girls to the pursuit of scientific knowledge over the past four years. I have watched them grow from curious and inquisitive freshmen to the college-bound future leaders in our STEM community.” Mr. Tesar also stated he is exceptionally impressed at their abilities to complete such high-level research projects despite the challenges of the current pandemic. “All three of these students refused to be hindered by our current global pandemic, but instead showed the highest levels of resilience and academic dedication in completing three Social Science Research Projects investigating human social-emotional behaviors in fields that are of the utmost importance today.”

Councilman Hand Invites Residents To Apply For Picnic Permits Online Oyster Bay Town Councilman Tom Hand announced that residents are invited to apply for picnic permits online at www. oysterbaytown.com/ picnic. As a part of the Town’s commitment to digitizing services for the convenience of all, these online reservations are valid for picnics at Marjorie R. Post Community Park in Massapequa, Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and Beach in Oyster Bay, Harry Tappen Beach and Marina in Glenwood Landing, SyossetWoodbury Community Park, and Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park. “Our beautiful Town Parks are the perfect
location for a family, school, or community group outing set in the great outdoors. On Tuesday, April 7 at 7:00 pm, the Suburban Art League will be hosting a fundraising event for the Tony LaMarca Life Tribute Award at the Syosset Woodbury Community Center located at 7800 Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury, NY. Tony was instrumental for many years in getting arts into the local community with the help of the Town of Oyster Bay. He died suddenly from surgical complications in September. He had no family and no proper funeral or wake, so a SAL member, Ray Guttadauria generously paid for his burial. There will be raffles for baskets, light refreshments, music, a slide show, and touching speeches throughout the evening to raise funds for a Life
Tribute award. The award will be disbursed overtime at one show annually until the funds have been exhausted. All are welcome.

The Long Island Pet Expo returns for the first time since the outbreak of COVID on March 5-6, 2022, with fur flying entertainment, dog sporting competitions and educational programs designed for the whole family. The event returns to the Suffolk Federal Credit Union Arena and features many special attractions, pet adoptions and outstanding shopping for pet lovers and their pets. “The Long Island area is passionate about animals and pets of all kinds,” said show co-producer Karen Garetano of Family Pet Shows, which runs seven similar events in the northeast. “We are excited to be back in the area after a long, unplanned break. The number of pet licenses
in the region has almost doubled since the start of COVID, and the interest in the event seems to have doubled too based on our phones and social media activity.” The 80+ special exhibits always feature some of the hottest new products coming out often before they hit the retail shelves. Dogs on leashes are always welcome, and several area rescue groups with adoptable pets will be on hand. Popular performers and presenters include Diana Frohman and her beautiful Dancing Dogs. Residents To Submit Photos For Town Publications
Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson invites residents to submit photos taken in the Town of Oyster Bay to be considered for future use in Town publications. “Our residents recently received their 2022 Town calendar, which is filled with photos submitted throughout the year depicting people, places, community events and Championship Cat Shows scenery throughout our and more. Town,” said Councilwoman “We always have fun at Johnson. “We accept these events, but we also are strong supporters of responsible pet ownership and humane values when it comes to all issues involving animals and pets,” said Garetano. Fifty-One POBJFKHS DECA Students To Compete In State Competition

Participating members are required to analyze a business case study in a category of their choosing, determine a solution,
and then present their ideas to a panel of judges. Those who successfully plead their cases are then selected to move forward in the competition. DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) is an association of marketing students that encourages the development of business and leadership skills through academic conferences and competitions. DECA, and other extracurricular programs offered by the District, allow students to pursue their interests and thrive both within and outside of the classroom.

In partnership with the Town, GLIRC hosts the Annual TOBAY Triathlon and Tri-Relay to raise money for deserving local charities and initiatives.
“Mike has always been a ‘can do’ person and has been the consummate team player. Recreation is a hallmark on Long Island in no small part to people like Mike. He has put his stamp on so many good things in our community and his legacy goes well beyond what he has built at GLIRC,” said Supervisor Saladino. An avid runner himself, Mike co-founded GLIRC more than four
decades ago, and served a noteworthy tenure as president bringing many popular recreational races to Long Island. “He has always been the driving force behind GLIRC and a true leader in our community,” added Councilwoman Vicki Walsh. “Mike, you have moved mountains to improve the general welfare for all of us.”
