South Grove Elementary School in Syosset recently held a Multicultural Explore-A-Rama consisting of different cultural share workshops presented to students in kindergarten through third grade. Facilitated by teachers, support staff, and most notably, South Grove fifthgrade students, the event featured nearly 40 different workshops covering topics such as Afghani games, Chinese terra cotta, El Salvadorian food, Indian and Spanish sports, Italian nursery rhymes and pasta art and much more. Some students even

simulated Michelangelo’s painting of the Sistine Chapel by creating colorful illustrations on the bottom of their desks while lying on their backs. Students were initially asked to present their favorite multicultural games, food, dance, art, music, holidays or stories. While the kindergarten through third-grade ‘guests’ learned a lot about different cultures, according to enrichment specialist Michele Webb, it was the fifth-grade presenters who reaped the greatest benefit from the leadership experience.

While some students presented workshops related to their personal cultural heritage, many others developed workshops related to a culture not necessarily from their own ancestry, but rather interest. Many of these interests were developed through their participation in the elementary World Language Program. Webb said the goal of the Explore-A-Rama is to promote an awareness of and an appreciation for different cultures.

Strolling Into Spring By: Jamie Lynn Ryan March. That month of transition. The beginning of spring and all things new. A rebirth of sorts. Or so we convince ourselves, anyway. Why not January, or February? I suppose weather has as much to do with our moods as any internal factors; and, while March makes no promises with regard to its atmospheric conditions, I think we can safely assume that the worst of winter is now behind us. There is something about the blossoming of trees and flowers, the lengthening of daylight hours, the greening of the now-barren grounds… it signals a revitalization of the year as it stands, a pause in the monotony, a gradual phasing out of the state of hibernation many of us have

been mired in since the holiday season. Just last weekend, I took the time to stroll along two of our pristine Long Island beaches – one on the outskirts of Northport, and the other out on the North Fork. Sure, it was a bit brisk and barren; but just to experience the fresh sea air, to feel the sand beneath my (sneakered) feet, to gaze out onto the crystal blue Long Island Sound… there is something to be said for venturing outside and exploring. That said, it would’ve been nice to have maybe just a couple more snow days to vegetate with a clear conscience, to stay under the covers and catch up on Netflix. The one true “blizzard” was exactly that, one and done, over a weekend. Kind of a waste. The rest of the “snow

days” were more of a minor inconvenience, not nearly enough down time to truly capitalize. That’s the thing about time. When we have it to spare, we don’t often utilize it to its full potential, choosing instead to waste it idling away the hours on trivial things like sleep and mindless chores. Instead, choose to take that leisurely drive, set out on a new adventure to an unexplored corner of the world – even within your own neighborhood. Take pictures, read books, paint, write a song… do things you’ve always wanted to do, today. Tomorrow may be partly cloudy with a chance of rain; but that also means there’s at least an equal chance of sun. May spring be that season of hope for everyone.

Paul Hunchak of Old Westbury Gardens gave a presentation titled “The Phipps Family of Old Westbury Gardens.” It highlighted the personal lives of John S. and Margarita Grace Phipps and how they reared a family in the Old Westbury House during the Gilded Age.

The Plainview-Old Bethpage School District’s John F. Kennedy High School’s (POBJFK) student-run store, “The Hawk’s Nest,” recently received Gold Certification status from the Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) thanks to the work of two students. Katie Horenstein and Jack Hymowitz wrote a 50 page manual for the store covering topics like finances, marketing, distribution of products and sales. The store is one of only four schools in New York State to receive the

certification. DECA is a national organization that aims to prepare emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe - of which POBJFK has its own chapter. DECA offers certification on two levels: chapter level through a written project and individual level through a comprehensive exam. The certification program reinforces the integration of National Curriculum Standards and 21st century

The number and types of activities a school-based enterprise, in this case the school store, completes determines the level of certification awarded. Activities included the standards of Financial Analysis, Operations, Marketing-Information Management, Market Planning, Product/Service Management, Pricing, Distribution/Channel Management, Promotion, Selling and Human Resources Management.

The Select Chorus from Our Lady of Mercy Academy (OLMA) joined the legendary rock group, Foreigner, as they kicked off their acoustic tour by performing live on the NBC TODAY Show. The ladies sang the rock classic “I Want to Know What Love Is” alongside the band. Later that evening, the Chorus then opened the NYCB Theatre at Westbury concert with an a cappella set and rejoined the band on stage to close the show. Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District’s John F. Kennedy High School students recently performed several a cappella songs for acclaimed author Mickey Rapkin, who authored Pitch Perfect, the book behind popular movies

Pitch Perfect and Pitch Perfect 2. Mickey Rapkin is a lover of choir, drama and a cappella who has contributed to the performing arts through his writing. During his visit, he listened to seven a cappella

group performances and led a Q & A session with two John F. Kennedy High School choirs. Rapkin discussed the field of journalism, college a cappella, theatre and movie-making.

Three students at Holy Trinity Diocesan High School were honored in the annual “Voice of Democracy” essay contest held by the Hicksville VFW for the district’s students. This year’s theme was, “My Vision for America”. Teachers from three Hicksville schools judged PITCH PERFECT - Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District’s John F. Kennedy the essays. Robotic Repertoire For the first time, the Hicksville Middle School Robotics team competed and placed at the SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island FIRST Lego League Qualifier 3 at Mineola High School. The Meteorites placed within the top eight teams to advance to the Long Island Championship on February 28th at Longwood High School.

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Rebecca M. Alesia was recently interviewed by Allison Kwon, a Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK High School student, who is writing an article in her school’s paper about the diverse duties of an elected official

in the Town of Oyster Bay. Councilwoman Alesia explained some of the workings of Town government and discussed local issues of concern currently being addressed by the Oyster Bay Town Board. “Public service is truly a privilege,”

Coding Collaboration school teacher Christine Owens, math coordinator Angela Kozlowski and the support of Berry Hill Principal Joanne Mannion, who attended the trip as well. The Brown Bag seminar was a follow-up to a Google Hangout videoconference between the two groups held earlier this year. Brown Bag seminars involve students who volunteer their recess time to participate in enrichment opportunities of interest. “This is a wonderful opportunity for our

students to learn more about programming and to see the code behind the video games created by the high school students,” said Kolkhorst, who has held Brown Bag Seminars at Berry Hill on a wide variety of topics. “Our kids have now become beta testers. They had a lot of fun meeting with the high school students, testing their games and offering feedback. In turn, the high school students were wonderful and informative mentors. ”

Learning the Inspiration Baylis Elementary School in Syosset welcomed popular children’s author Kate McMullan, who met with students of all grade levels to share her experiences as an author and to provide a fun and informative overview of the writing, illustrating and publishing process. Sponsored by the Baylis PTA Author-Illustrator

Committee, McMullan’s workshop in the school library included a student Q&A, with the author answering interesting questions such as, “When did you decide you wanted to become a writer?,” “Where do you get the inspiration for your books?” and “How do you handle rejection?” “You have to have thick skin to be an author,” McMullan told the

students in response to the last question. According to committee chairperson Lauren Goff, the Baylis library contains many of McMullan’s popular books, so students were familiar with her work. This includes the popular “Dragon Slayers’ Academy” series, for which she provided some insight. McMullan also took the time to autograph books.

Five exceptional student-athletes within the Hicksville Public School District have earned places in their respective New York state championship tournaments. New Facade Unveiled

Wednesday afternoon the Nassau County Firefighters Museum and Education Center in Garden City, New York, officially named their mascot, a Dalmatian puppy, which is a piece of the building’s new façade, designed by H2M architects and engineers. H2M’s Director of Architecture, Joe Mottola, who is also a Massapequa

Volunteer Firefighter, is a board member at the museum and volunteered H2M’s services to design the façade. The project team for the design included Project Designer Katie Stone, Structural Engineering Department Manager Mike Mckeown, Staff Engineer Berhan Gebregziabiher and Project Designer Patrick Stone. The name of the Dalmatian was determined by a statewide New York contest last November inviting children age 12 and under to submit names for the official mascot of the center, a 25foot tall Dalmatian puppy, now adoring the façade of the museum. The winner is Lilyana Rodriguez, 5, of Massapequa, who chose the name Valiant to represent courage, an appropriate name to describe firefighters and the work they do. Lilyana was presented with a miniature firefighter uniform by the Museum’s Executive Director, Alana Petrocelli. The museum also hosted a celebratory

party after the ceremony for Lilyana and her family, classmates and friends. The Massapequa Volunteer Firefighters, including Joe Mottola, Pat Stone and TJ Corona attended the ceremony with their fire truck and used the 100-foot ladder to rise up to the dog and display his name on a large bone-shaped dog tag, as Lilyana revealed the name at the entrance of the museum for the news cameras and newspaper photographers as they captured the moment. “I’m very excited to have contributed our services to the museum, the firematic services and the community. Giving back to the community is of utmost importance and is furthered with this project by continuing the dream of the founders to provide a hands on opportunity to learn about fire safety for our youth and community members,” said Joe Mottola. “Congratulations to Lilyana and her family.” The project was initiated in order to improve the aesthetic of the façade, provide a statement piece that was highly visible to the surrounding area to attract visitors, and to introduce wayfinding signage for the museum’s entrance. The museum wanted a “whimsical” design that was kid-friendly. Opened in June 2006, the museum is a 10,000 square foot interactive facility where individuals and families can experience first-hand the proud tradition of firefighting in our communities. The new façade was completed in October 2015.

that will be broadcasted on WALK-FM. Madison, a Girl Scout Cadet from Malverne, used the PSA to encourage listeners to attend the April 17th

Walkathon where more than 800 people will be participating. This event supports GSNC’s Healthy Living Initiative programs,

encouraging girls to live healthy lifestyles physically, emotionally and socially. Families and individuals will also enjoy food, games and activities.

The event will be held at Old Bethpage Village Restoration on Sunday, April 17th, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. If unable to attend,

Talent Showcase

Nearly 120 children on the autism spectrum recently showcased their talents and abilities during the “Gersh 201.6 FM” radio themed live Winter Show held at Gersh Academy in West Hempstead, where students ages five

through 21 sang and performed choreographed numbers alongside live tracks of popular radio tunes from personalized playlists they made in class. Culminating the students’ many hours of hard work and rehearsal time that began in January, the show featured a total of 12 acts that were proudly watched by over 200 parents as well as Gersh Academy students, staff and teachers. Performing to a medley of radio hits of yesterday and today, elementary students sang and danced along such songs as One Direction’s What Makes You Beautiful and Pharrell Williams’ Happy; middle school students performed to such tunes as Good Charlotte’s Game On and Billy Joel’s Piano Man; and high school students strutted their stuff to

such perennial favorites as We Will Rock You by Queen, I’m Every Woman by Chaka Khan and On The Radio by Donna Summer. In between musical performances, students also showcased their acting and comedic chops through a staged radio newscast and comedy skit. Celeste Gagliardi, Principal of Gersh Academy, said that Gersh Academy’s Winter Show is held every year for a very specific purpose. “As delightful and enjoyable as it is to watch our students perform in our Winter Show each year, our Winter Show is far more than just a show – it is an experience with great takeaways for our students,” explains Gagliardi. “This show gives our students a forum for channeling their artistry, creativity, selfexpression and camaraderie while overcoming the many challenges that so many children with developmental disabilities often face, including speaking, social anxiety and sensory integration deficits that can make it difficult to be exposed to loud sounds, music or noise.” Beyond choosing their own music, learning the lyrics and mastering choreographed numbers for performing in the show, the students also designed their own stage sets, which included hand-made vinyl records. They also created themed baskets that were raffled off in an auction held during the show, benefiting Gersh Academy’s special events and projects.
