(NAPSI)—A recent study by Interactive Advertising Bureau shows that 96 percent of consumers begin their car search online. In fact, millennials spend as much as 12 to 13 hours researching cars online before making the decision to buy. Buying a used car requires even more research and there are lots of places online to do so. Here are four points to help you avoid wasting
time. 1. Know what you want. Have a budget and clear idea of the type of car that’s right for you first. Use online reviews, too. Getting pulled off track will overcomplicate things. 2. Where you shop can be just as important as what you buy. Choose reputable websites and dealerships where vehicle history information is readily available.
3. Get a good handle on what the car you’re looking at is worth. That way, you’ll know when a bargain looks too good to be true. 4. Find the cars you want and avoid the ones you don’t by starting your search using vehicle history at Carfax. com. Choose 1-Owner, no reported accidents and more, plus every car there comes with a free Carfax Report.

Vegetarian Reuben Sandwich By Patrick Campbell of Miller Place
This Vegetarian Reuben Sandwich is a fun take on the traditional Jewish-style favorite, but swaps out fatty corned beef for stir-fried veggies!
and cover pan to simmer and steam veggies. Steam veggie combination until they are soft, but not overcooked. Drain and pour into a bowl. Set aside.
"You still get that flavor and texture you would with a regular Reuben, but you can enjoy it with less guilt because this version is packed with veggies," shares Patrick.
Rinse and dry pan and then add nondairy butter to coat pan. Place two slices of rye bread in pan, cover each slice with two slices of swiss cheese each, cover on medium heat and grill until cheese is melted.
What You Will Need
1 Pack of Portabello Mushrooms 1 Red Onion 1 Box/Bag of Baby Spinach Leaves Non-dairy Butter Substitute Swiss Cheese Small Bag of Sauerkraut (drained) Seedless Jewish-style Rye Bread Marie's Thousand Island Dressing Large Frying Pan/Skillet
Remove swiss cheese covered bread and plate the slices, with each slice facing up. Spread one or two tablespoons of Thousand Island Dressing onto each slice. Scoop sauerkraut onto each slice above dressing. Lastly, scoop drained veggie mixture onto bread and close sandwich.
Preparation Combine diced portobello mushrooms, spinach leaves and sliced onion into a frying pan that has 1/4 cup water at the bottom. Trun on high until stove gets going. Then reduce heat to low

The Joy Animals Bring Does anything else even need to be said? Animals bring us so much joy, unconditional love, centeredness and clarity. Growing up, my parents were “not animal people” as they would often remind me at the mere mention of wanting a dog. I never experienced the joy and responsibility of having a pet when I was growing up. As a result, it just wasn’t on my radar as a kid, or even in my early twenties. At the age of twenty-nine, I found myself newly single, living in New York City and yearning for something or someone to care for other than myself. Without overthinking it, I adopted a two month old Shih Ztu and brought him home. With no idea of how to take care of a dog, I stumbled into a pet shop where I was loaded down with puppy food, vitamins, wee wee pads, a bed, a brush, food/water bowls and just about every other accoutrement you can think of. I can remember the first time I let this pup run loose in my tiny studio apartment. He was a ball of energy; a little white pouf ball of love as he snuggled up close in my
lap. I named him Francis Albert after Frank Sinatra, of course, which later incarnated to Frankie. Frankie was my first official family member. Not the family I was born into, but the family I would create on my own. He was there before my marriage and before my son. At one point in time, it was just me and Frankieboy. When my son was born, we hemmed and hawed about how Frankie may react to a new baby in the house. Would he behave? Would we have to worry? From the moment we brought our son home from the hospital, Frankie took on the role of pseudo-nanny (yes, like in Peter Pan); watching over the crib, alerting us when the baby was crying, and gently laying down next to our newborn son when he took his naps. It was astonishing; even more so, since Frankie-boy was not exactly known for exemplary behavior. In fact, he flunked out of dog obedience school. True story. As my son grew, it was so much fun to watch the two of them play together and bond. Rolling in the grass, playing ball or fetch, and
running around the house or the yard. It would always bring a smile to my face. Now, at fourteen, Frankie is getting on in years as my son is getting stronger and stronger and hitting his stride. I know there will come a time when Frankie is no longer with us, and it is hard to imagine. We still keep him running for exercise and we love him up as much as we can. I will always be grateful to him for teaching me how to care for another living being back when it was just me and him. These days, there is another dog in the fold, our Pitbull mix, Boris. To see this little Shih Ztu and large Pitbull get on together is a riot. They vacillate between rivalry and playfulness. Add my two favorite horses, Kingston in Melville, New York, and Lucky the beautiful Arabian, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, into the mix and I just can’t imagine a life without animals around me. I am so glad that my son is growing up experiencing the joy that animals bring.

What it has not been able to do is remind the visitor just how formidable enemy defenses were, and the valor required to confront them. This vehicle allows us to reinforce the story of how we have heroes in our own families who have served, and continue to do so in the defense of our nation.” Dr. Libby O’Connell, History Channel’s Historian Emeritus, observed, “With so little time devoted to teaching the events and lessons of World War II in our nation’s classrooms, it is easy to believe that Allied forces swept aside all opposition to end this

Mr. Lawrence Kadish, president and founder of The Museum of American Armor, today announced the acquisition of a replica German armor vehicle designed to remind visitors and history students that America’s defense of freedom during World War II came with a heavy cost. The replica Sturmgeschüz (or StuG) is meant to represent a German assault weapon that placed a powerful gun on a tank-like chassis. Initially intended to destroy enemy bunkers and similar defensive positions, its low profile, 75 mm cannon and mobility were put to effective use as an ambush weapon as the Allies closed in on the Nazi Reich. A version of this weapon, the StuG III became Germany’s most produced armored fighting vehicle during World War II, with some 10,000 produced. Mr. Kadish observed, “Its acquisition is meant to represent the deadly challenges faced by the Allies as they fought to liberate the world from the murderous scourge of Nazism. It will be periodically displayed

Maintenance Pays (NAPSI)—Many drivers find that if they want to make their car last, it pays to put it first. Taking good care of your car means you are more likely to avoid problems, both now, while you’re driving it, and later, when you sell it. To improve the life of your vehicle and its price at resale, it’s a good idea to get it serviced regularly. The car will not only run better, it will be highlighted on a Carfax Report as a “well maintained” vehicle.
Keep track of the service history so you can prove you did the right thing to prospective buyers. To help, you can get reminders about upcoming service from the free myCarfax mobile app. Subscribers also learn of any open recalls on their cars. Bash the Trash The Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District’s Old Bethpage Elementary School recently hosted an event called “Bash the Trash”, to encourage musical creativity in its students. Over the weeks preceding the event, students were encouraged to bring in recycled materials and household items that would have been otherwise discarded to build unique
instruments. In a schoolwide assembly, students used these materials to create and test their unique instruments individually and in a group orchestra. This initiative was part of Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District’s ongoing efforts to encourage critical thinking skills in students and encourage creativity through STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering,
Art and Mathematics) programs. Events like “Bash the Trash” and so many others represent the myriad ways that the District continues to serve its students beyond the everyday classroom experience. For more information about the Plainview-Old Bethpage Central School District, please visit the District’s website at http:// www.pobschools.org.

Pets can save lives Pets can be trained to perform various tasks around the house and in the community. Rescue animals assist in finding people after natural disasters and have even been known to detect illness in some cases. Medical alert pets can help people with debilitating illnesses and assist physically impaired people with their everyday tasks.
Pets provide you with socialization opportunities A pet can be the common denominator you need to strike up new friendships and connect with others in your area. Whether you are walking around the neighborhood with your pet, taking part in a pet obedience class or interest group, or hanging out at the local dog park, pets can help their owners expand their social circles. Pets can help combat stress Talking to, playing with or simply stroking your pet can make stress easier to handle. A study from researchers at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo found that, when conducting a stressful task, people experienced less stress when their pets were with them. Various other studies and data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have found that having a pet around can lower
your blood pressure, ease anxiety, and may even help to lessen aches and pains. Pets provide unconditional love, which can be beneficial to someone facing depression or post traumatic stress disorder.
2011-2012 National Pet Owners Survey, 58 percent of pet owners say their pets help teach their kids to be responsible through routine care, exercise and feeding the animal.
Pets help teach responsibility Taking care of a pet can help, both, children and adults become more responsible and accountable. According to the American Pet Product Association’s
Pets are more than mere companions. They offer numerous health and wellness benefits to people of all ages.

Pets can help prevent loneliness Loneliness affects people of all ages, but it is particularly problematic among seniors. Older adults who may be isolated can benefit greatly from having a pet around. According to a study published in Aging & Mental Health, older adults who owned pets were 36 percent less likely to say they were lonely, compared to those who didn’t have an animal companion.
Pets help lower allergy risks Keeping pets around your home can reduce a child’s likelihood of developing allergies by as much as 33 percent, according to a study by pediatrician James E. Gern, that was published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. People who are exposed early on in life to animals tend to develop stronger immune systems overall.

ets have been kept for centuries. Statistics from various sources indicate North Americans own millions of dogs, cats, birds, small mammals and even reptiles. Pets’ affable nature and loving looks are enough for many people to welcome them into their homes, but the benefits of having a pet extends far beyond their cute appearances and loving temperaments.

The Right Foods Can Fight Inflammation T he human body and its immune system excels at fighting foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses. Signaling chemicals called interleukins tell cells whether they are needed to fight illness or they should wait in the wings. While these immune defenders are doing their jobs, soreness, fatigue and swelling can occur — the natural side effects of an immune system response — but will soon dissipate.
However, many people deal with immune systems that are consistently revved up, even when no invaders are present. This is the problem with many chronic diseases and immune system dysfunction. Unfortunately, the inflammation that is a hallmark of immune defense becomes a daily problem that may result in chronic pain and other complications. What many people may not realize is that the foods that they are putting into their bodies may exacerbate inflammatory responses, while others may help keep inflammation at bay. People with rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, Hashimoto’s, and other chronic illnesses may find that turning to the right diet can tame inflammation and other symptoms. Recently, many health experts, including Dr. Barry Sears, founder of the Inflammation and Research
Foundation and author of the “Zone Diet,” and Dr. Andrew Weil, who offers the AntiInflammatory Food Pyramid, have begun to tout certain foods that are purported to reduce inflammatory response over an extended period of time.
As beneficial as some foods can be, it’s important to note that individuals are unique and certain foods may produce a particular response in some but not in others. Systematically isolating certain foods can help paint a picture of foods that can be problematic. But generally speaking, refined carbohydrates, sugar-sweetened beverages, fried foods, and processed meats may increase inflammation, advises Harvard Health Publishing. Conversely, certain foods and beverages that have been identified as reducing inflammation for many people. These include: tomatoes, olive oil, green leafy vegetables and cruciferous vegetables; nuts, like almonds and walnuts; fatty fish, berries, avocados, green tea, peppers, grapes, turmeric and dark chocolate. Including these foods in one’s daily diet may help to relieve the pain, bloating and fatigue associated with inflammation. It is important to speak with a doctor before
making any significant dietary changes. Discuss any inflammation issues you have been having and which foods might help. Generally speaking, a diet full of diverse, antioxidant-rich foods can provide relief for those with various levels of inflammation.

Depression
Understanding Its Effects
M
any people periodically have bad days when they just seem to be in a bad mood. When a bad mood isn’t short-lived, this might be a potential indicator of depression.
Depression is a common mental disorder that, according to the World Health Organization, affects more than 300 million people across the globe. The WHO notes that despite the fact that there are known and highly effective treatments for depression, fewer than half of those suffering from depression receive such treatments. Furthermore, in many countries, fewer than 10 percent of people with depression receive treatment.

Learning about depression and how to recognize its symptoms may compel people battling it to seek treatment for this very common and treatable disorder
What are the symptoms of depression? The Mayo Clinic notes that one in 10 people whose depression goes untreated commit suicide. That only highlights the importance of recognizing the symptoms of depression and acting once any have been identified or suspected. Symptoms can include: • Difficulty concentrating, remembering details and making decisions • Fatigue • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness and helplessness • Pessimism and hopelessness • Insomnia, early-morning wakefulness or sleeping too much • Irritability • Restlessness • Loss of interest in things once deemed pleasurable, including sex • Overeating or appetite loss
• Digestive problems that don’t get better, even with treatment • Persistent sad, anxious or “empty” feelings • Suicidal thoughts or attempts Anyone who has exhibited any of the aforementioned symptoms or even those who haven’t but suspect they might be suffering from depression should visit a physician immediately. The WHO notes there are a variety of treatments available to people who have been diagnosed with depression, and doctors will determine which might be the best for each patient. To make that determination, doctors may inquire about the duration and severity of symptoms as well as family history and whether or not the patient has a history of drug or alcohol abuse. Depression is a common mental disorder that too often goes undiagnosed. Seeking help the moment symptoms are detected or suspected can help people overcome the disorder.
Did you know? According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illnesses in the United States. Roughly 40 million adults in the United States have an anxiety disorder. The ADAA says nearly one-half of people diagnosed with depression are also diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders are highly treatable.

Depression also may be caused by physical conditions. The WHO says cardiovascular disease can lead to depression.
• Aches, pains, headaches, or cramps that won’t go away
354814N0227
Why do I have depression? Everyone has a bad day here or there, but people with depression may wonder why theirs are more than just a bad day. The WHO notes that depression is a byproduct of a complex interaction of social, psychological and biological factors. Exposure to adverse life events, such as unemployment, the death of a loved one or psychological trauma, can increase peoples’ risk of developing depression.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, certain foods may help you fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly, while others may compromise your ability to enjoy a restful night’s sleep. The NSF recommends whole grains, almonds and walnuts, and lean proteins. These foods help to balance out your hormones and regulate your wake/sleep cycle.
Sleep Like a Child Again
M
any adults lament that even if they were solid sleepers in their younger years, by the age of 50, their quality of sleep has unraveled. Some cling to the wisdom that people simply do not need as much sleep as they get older. Even though that is partly true, sufficient sleep is still a vital component of a healthy life.
The National Sleep Foundation recently updated its sleep recommendations per age group to include categories “may be appropriate” and “not recommended.” This includes a range of hours that may be adequate for certain adults. Adults between the ages of 26 and 65 are advised to get seven to nine hours of sleep per evening. However, six hours or 10 hours also may be acceptable. People over the age of 65 need roughly seven to eight hours of sleep each night, though between five and six hours also may be fine. Generally speaking, anything under five hours is not recommended based on data reviewed by sleep experts. Many older adults do not get enough sleep due to insomnia, states Jack Gardner, MD, a neurologist certified in sleep medicine. They’re concerned about health issues, may have sleep apnea, can experience pain or frequent urination, or may be taking medication that impedes sleep. Dr. Leila Kheirandish-Gozal, director of clinical sleep research at the University of Chicago, says that, over time, insufficient sleep can impact metabolism, mood, memory, and heart function. Various strategies can help people get more sleep and enjoy better sleep quality.

Create a luxury bed environment Splurge on the largest mattress you can afford and one that is comfortable for both parties (if married/coupled). A roomy bed routinely invites sleep. If you have a restless partner, try two separate beds pushed against each other. Consider white noise The sounds of the house or outdoors may
be keeping you up. Many people find that the gentle hum of a fan or a white-noise machine with a calming sound effect makes it easier for them to dose off than complete quiet. It can also block out extraneous noises. Keep electronics out of the bedroom It can be challenging to disconnect from electronics, but it is essential to falling asleep. Even a back-lit text coming through in the wee hours can be enough illumination to disrupt sleep. See your doctor If medications or illnesses are keeping you up, a change in regimen may provide the relief you need. Older adults can learn the steps to sleeping more soundly and easily. Check your pillow Take into consideration whether you are a side sleeper, a back sleeper or stomach sleeper, as there are pillows designed for all three sleeping styles. Some stores now feature more custom pillows with different levels of firmness, bounce back ability and even temperature. Yes, temperature. If you’re always struggling to get the cold side of the pillow, consider a “Cool Pillow,” that stays perpetually cool throughout the night. Proper Breathing Slow, relaxed breathes from your diaphram, versus quick, shallow chest breathes can mean the difference between drifting off or staying alert. Be sure you are breathing through your nose and into your diaphram in a slower, steadier manner; filling up your belly with air and then releasing the air smoothly and steadily through your mouth as you try to drift off to dreamland. Older adults can learn the steps to sleeping more soundly and easily.

here are new workout programs popping up in fitness centers around the U.S. that are allowing fitness-minded individuals to test their mettle. Recently, one of the more popular fitness regimens is HIIT, and it’s probably available at a fitness center near you.
HIIT is an acronym for High Intensity Interval Training. The American College of Sports Medicine says HIIT held steady among the top fitness trends for 2017 and 2018. The crux of HIIT workout routines are sustained, intense exercise followed by active recovery periods. WebMD says that HIIT can be used with any type of popular cardio workout, including rowing, jumping rope, speed walking, stair climbing, and more. Many gyms also build programs around HIIT that may include “boot camp” type workouts that utilize equipment or exercises using people’s own body weight to burn calories. A typical HIIT training session lasts about 30 minutes. Workouts are performed at 80 to 90 percent of a person’s maximal heart rate, which is the number of times the heart will beat in a minute without overexerting itself. Recovery periods are not entirely rest. They tend to be shorter than active periods, and come in at around 40 to 50 percent of the maximal heart rate.
In essence, a lower intensity workout as “rest.” The workout will alternate between the working and recovery periods.
HIIT workouts can be effective at boosting your metabolism and helping people burn calories faster. They also help to develop physical endurance. The science behind the workouts has to do with EPOC, or excess post-exercise oxygen consumption. The fitness lifestyle resource Daily Burn says that HIIT will help burn more fat and calories than regular steady workouts because EPOC\0x2008 is an oxygen shortage in the body that occurs during the intense portions of the HIIT workouts.
During recovery, the body will ask for more oxygen, creating an after burn and a metabolic disturbance. The fitness guide, Fitness Blender, states that the intense training will result in the body burning calories at a higher rate for up to 48 to 72 hours after exercising. This means that the benefits of HIIT training continue even while you are, say, relaxing on the couch watching your favorite Netflix show later on that day. This type of workout regimen is especially good for those in relatively good shape, who need to drop a large amount of weight relatively quickly. For example, a new mother looking to drop
her baby weight. People may see greater results by doing HIIT workouts three times a week for half of the duration than they would if they were performing more typical workouts more frequently. For those whose schedules are already jam-packed, HIIT can be a more efficient way of exercising. HIIT requires a strong baseline fitness lev-
el, so beginners or those who have been out of the gym for some time are urged to start slowly. Also, since HIIT causes high demand on the heart and respiratory systems, it is essential to discuss the regimen with a doctor to find out if HIIT is a smart choice depending on your personal medical history. Once you are medically in the clear, consult with a qualified trainer at your local gym to find the best routine for you.

10th Annual Pink Bowl
Over 100 bowlers came out to support The Maurer Foundation’s 10th Annual Pink Bowl event, raising over $14,000 for breast health education. The event was held on Sunday, February 10, 2019 at Bowlmor Lanes in Melville. For the fifth year in a row, the Pink Bowl was sponsored by Sperry Associates Federal Credit Union based in Garden City Park. “We are grateful for the important work that the Maurer Foundation does across Long Island,” stated Kevin Healy, Sperry’s CEO. “Their mission of educating the community about breast
cancer truly saves lives, and Sperry is proud to support such a good cause”. Twenty-six teams rose to the occasion, ready for an exciting Sunday afternoon of friendly competition on the lanes. First place honors went to Sperry’s team “Branch Out” for the highest team score. Dan Tinucci from Charles Schwab won the Best Male Bowler award with an impressive score of 225. Best Female Bowler went to Joanna Jensen from Nawrocki Smith, with a score of 187. A special thanks to Bowlmor Lanes in
Melville, as well as all the sponsors for helping to make this event successful: Sperry Associates Federal Credit Union, Nawrocki Smith, Signature Bank, TD Bank, AVZ Certified Public Accountants, Charles Schwab, and Dr. Kathy & Mr. Michael Weiss. The Maurer Foundation established in 1995, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit based in Melville, NY. Plan For Your Retirement (NAPSI)—If you’re like 82 percent of Americans, you may be concerned about retirement, according to the Employment Benefit Research Institute. Fortunately, you may have a brighter future if you heed five hints from Ray LeVitre, CFP, author of “20 Retirement Decisions You Need To Make Right Now” as well as founder and managing partner of Net Worth Advisory Group—a firm specializing in retirement financial planning.
1. Track your expenses now. Gradually adjust your expenditures toward the budget you’ll have in retirement. 2. Start living like a retiree. Change your lifestyle to reflect how it might be in retirement. That might mean downsizing your home, reducing your leisure travel or driving a more efficient car. 3. Increase your savings. Within 15 years of retirement, contribute a minimum of 15 percent
of earnings toward retirement. 4. Explore your Social Security options. Postponing benefits until age 70 can significantly boost lifetime income. Explore spousal benefits, too. 5. Don’t invest too conservatively. A broadly diversified, well-balanced portfolio of equities, bonds and cash offers the best opportunity to maintain the necessary growth of capital while minimizing volatility.
