Innovative Fitness Programs For Seniors It is important to stay active and eat healthy foods in an effort to promote fitness and well-being. This is especially true for seniors, many of whom lead increasingly sedentary lifestyles as they age. The American Heart Association says adults should get at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity, and a Harvard University study says that exercise can be an insurance policy for heart health. Today’s seniors have more fitness options at their disposal than ever before. SilverSneakers® is the leading community fitness program for older adults in the United States. SilverSneakers® members can participate in specially curated programs at participating gyms and community centers across the nation. According to the organization, there are more participating fitness locations available than there are Starbucks® coffee establishments. Classes are fit for everyone, no matter their experience level. Those concerned about gym costs
may find that SilverSneakers® already is included in their Medicare Advantage plan for no additional cost. Plus, there is access to healthy living discounts from participating businesses. Canada has begun to develop its own senior-centric fitness programs. The Healthy, Safe and Strong group exercise program is an introduction to safe exercises available for adults age 60 and older in the province of Ontario. The program can help develop better stamina, maintain or improve balance and increase strength and endurance. StrongerU Senior Fitness is a relatively new program of pre-choreographed group fitness offering instruction in four program types: cardio, strength training, stretching, and circuit training. The program addresses a need in Canada for quality and consistent senior fitness programing. As studies show that engaging in physical activity is the most effective way for aging men and women to stay healthy, more adults may be compelled to join fitness groups that cater to the 50-and-over market.

1. Read the serving size information Serving size information on nutrition labels indicates both the recommended serving size and the number of servings contained in t he package. The AND recommends that consumers compare the portion size they actually eat to the serving size listed on the label. Some people may consume more than one serving size per meal, and that can affect just how much of each ingredient,
including ingredients like sodium that can be harmful if consumed in excess, a person is eating. 2. Pay attention to calorie count Nutrition labels contain calorie counts, which can help people maintain healthy weights. Being at a healthy weight has been linked to a reduced risk for various conditions, including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Nutrition labels list calories per serving, so people trying limit their calorie intake to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight should pay particular attention to this information. 3. Let percent daily values guide you The AND notes that percent daily values, which are listed as “DV” on food labels, help consumers determine how particular
foods fit into their daily meal plans. These values are based on a 2,000 calorie per day diet, though some people may need more or fewer calories than that. In addition, some people may need more than the 100 percent recommended daily value of a given nutrient. Consumers should discuss their specific needs regarding calorie and nutrient intake with their physicians. For those advised to heed the daily values recommendations, ingredients that are listed at 5 percent DV or less are considered low, while those that are 20 percent DV or higher are considered high. The AND recommends aiming low for ingredients like sodium, saturated fat and cholesterol, while high in vitamins, minerals and fiber can be beneficial. Supervisor Joseph Saladino announces that the Town of Oyster Bay will serve as home to The Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County’s (CP Nassau) 16th Annual Polar Bear Plunge benefit fundraiser on Sunday, March 8, 2020 at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park, Beach and Marina in Oyster Bay, with festivities to begin at noon and the plunge at 1pm. “The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to serve as home this Polar Bear Plunge as it supports the Cerebral Palsy Association and their many outstanding programs and services. I invite everyone to come out of winter hibernation and join us in this fun and unique plunge into north shore waters. The water may be cold, but the cause is certain to warm your heart,” said Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph
Saladino, who was named the Honorary Chairman of the event. The Polar Bear Plunge festivities will include a DJ, free hot chocolate, coffee, tea, hot dogs, and soup. Raffles will be offered, and children will enjoy many other surprises including Star Wars characters and a dancing Polar Bear. An indoor assembly area will also be available. The event will be held rain, snow or shine! All proceeds will benefit the more than 1,800 children and adults with
disabilities who participate in programs and receive services through the Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County. Much about trips to the grocery store has changed since many adults were children. Many grocery stores are considerably larger than they were as recently as 20 years ago and now sell everything from traditional grocery store fare to clothing to items one might expect to find in a hardware store. Another aspect of grocery shopping that has changed over the years is the groceries themselves. Nutrition labels have been around for decades, though today’s labels contain considerably more information than they did in years past. As a result, many shoppers, even those who make sure to read product labels before placing items in their shopping carts, may not know exactly what they’re buying. Nutrition labels can be complicated, and ingredients that are beneficial for some consumers may be harmful to others. Seniors and people with existing medical conditions should always discuss their diets with their physicians, asking if there are specific foods they should avoid or seek out. In addition, the following three tips, courtesy of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, can help consumers understand nutrition labels and make sound choices.

Gorman Council #5091 for their installation of LED lighting in the parish at St. Edward’s the Confessor Roman Catholic Church in Syosset. The Knights of Columbus is an organization renowned for their charitable efforts, and this project not only helped better light the St. Edward’s parish and help cut down on environmental waste, it also immediately paid dividends in the form of a $13,513 rebate check that was presented by PSEG-LI to help defer the costs. Student Gets Real-World Work Experience Jason Kropp, Bethpage UFSD, who is studying Automotive Technology at Nassau BOCES Barry Tech, has the honor of being one of the first students to participate in a new partnership. He is working as a paid cooperative employee at Levittown Ford through the school’s
Cooperative Occupational Educational Program. Four days a week, Jason works with a mentor technician at Levittown Ford to apply what he has learned in the classroom to the realworld work environment, while earning wages and receiving vital work

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced that the Department of Community and Youth Services, Cultural and Performing Arts Division (CAPA) will be once again offering exciting cultural enrichment programs for the spring 2020 season, and registration for all applications is now open. “I am pleased to announce that the Town’s Cultural Enrichment Program will return once again this spring, as these enrichment programs offer residents the opportunity to develop a new skill while having fun in the process,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Whether you’re an emerging artist or a resident looking for a new hobby, these classes offer a wonderful opportunity to broaden your horizons, and provide not only education but enjoyment as well.” All of the classes will be held at the SyossetWoodbury Community Center, located at 7800 Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury, except for the All About Crystals and Meditation and Spiritual Awakening workshops, which will be held at North Massapequa Community Center, 214 N. Albany Avenue in Massapequa.

The World Health Organization says that doctors diagnose nearly 10 million new cases of dementia each year. With so many people understandably concerned about any and all cognitive issues related to aging, the search is continually on to find ways to strengthen the mind’s muscle. It may be as simple as picking up a book. According to the online health and wellness resource The Healthy (www. thehealthy.com), reading has been associated with language reception in the left temporal cortex of the brain. When this part of the brain processes written material, neurons begin working hard to transmit information. Research conducted by Stanford University indicated that MRI scans of people who are deep into a Jane Austen novel showed an increase in blood flowing to areas of the brain that control both cognitive
and executive function. When the brain is working efficiently, it may be less prone to some of the issues that can cause a decline in memory and brain function. Research published in the journal Neurology found frequent brain exercise through reading lowered mental decline by 32 percent. Of course, the benefits of reading extend beyond the physical. Literary fiction can help people be more empathetic. Getting lost in a book and the characters’ stories makes others more relatable. Reading has the potential to help a person understand what people are thinking, offers research published in the journal Science. Picking up a good book also can help a person gain knowledge of new cultures, ideas and history and even improve vocabulary. Picking up a newspaper or magazine, joining a book club or reading with children are just a few of the many ways to improve the mind through reading.

Too Much Sleep Can Be Harmful Lack of sufficient sleep is a problem for millions of people across the globe. But what about too much sleep? Though busy men and women might think it’s impossible to get too much sleep, excessive sleep is nothing to joke about. According to the National Sleep Foundation, most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep per night (the NSF notes that a small percentage of people may need 10 hours of sleep per night). People who routinely sleep more than seven to nine hours may have an underlying health concern. For example, the NSF notes that a recent study found that routinely sleeping more than 10 hours per night can be linked to metabolic syndrome. The Mayo Clinic says metabolic syndrome refers to a cluster of conditions that occur together and increase a person’s risk for serious health issues, including heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.
