During the three day event, Girl Scouts will host booth sales throughout Nassau County and use digital and social media skills to spread the word about where to buy Girl Scout Cookies®. Over the past century, Troops have learned five valuable skills needed in both life and business: goal setting, decision making, money management, business ethics, and people skills. Designed by Girl Scouts of the USA, National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend serves to encourage members throughout the country to take part in the largest entrepreneurial program Girl Scouting offers and for Nassau County Residents to
support Girl Scouts by purchasing cookies. “Girl Scout Cookie Weekend is the Girl Scouts’ big push to remind their communities that Girl Scout Cookies® are for sale but for a limited time,” said Donna Ceravolo, Executive Director/CEO of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. This is a crucial time for our girls to get out and, not only encourage neighbors, friends and family to purchase cookies to support their sales goals but gain the valuable hands-on entrepreneurial skills they will carry with them for years to come.” Community members may also purchase cookies

And just like that, the snow has melted and signs of spring have begun to sprout here and there, signaling the end of hibernation and the beginning of so many wonderful things in this second season of the year. Of course, we are not completely out of the frozen woods yet; but it certainly is nice to feel the warmth of the sun in the month of February nonetheless. Last year, March brought with it a robin’s nest, complete with four perfect blue eggs, to my grandparents’ house. I often wonder if one of the babies will return this spring to lay its own batch of eggs and continue the line of fuzzy birds born in that backyard. So many wonderful memories took place in that very spot… how fitting that new life
should be born there as well. I recently picked up a bunch of tulips and roses while shopping, deciding that the post-holiday season barrenness of my apartment could use a little splash of color to liven things up. It’s amazing what a bowl of flowers can do to improve the atmosphere of a room… how I do love to snip and arrange fresh blooms in vases on occasion. It’s times like these that I wish I had a real garden of my own to tend; but alas, decks are really only conducive to the standard potted plant. I am certainly looking forward to heading out this spring and exploring the beaches and parks of Long Island as they come back to life. Aside from the exercise these random, meandering strolls encourage, they
also give me the alwayswelcome opportunity to continue to explore my love of photography. It doesn’t matter how many times I have visited a particular place; there is always a new angle to be found, another pretty sight to document. In about a month’s time, my hope is to have my new website up and ready to launch, featuring some of these scenic snapshots from the last several years, perhaps with some prints and calendars available for purchase. In the interim, I have created a public Instagram account, so please feel free to “follow” me @jlynnspj, take a look around and stay tuned for the official launch of my site, www. SnapshotsAndSilhouettes.com. Springtime is the season of beginnings – no harm in getting a head start!

Long Island’s Got Talent Attention Long Island students! Can you carry a tune?Is a musical instrument your specialty? If so, get your audition DVD or YouTube video submitted now for Long Island’s Got Talent 2017, hosted by the Ward Melville Heritage Organization (WMHO). Created by WMHO’s Youth Corps, the event gives Long Island students the opportunity to show off their talents this spring. It’s open to students 10-17

Registration Underway Registration is currently underway for the Town of Oyster Bay’s Spring Men’s Softball Night League hosted by the Town’s Department of Parks. The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to continue the Men’s Softball Night League each year to promote teamwork as well as a great game of softball. The Town of Oyster Bay’s Men’s Softball Night League offers players a competitive atmosphere as well as exceptional conditions for the sport. This well-managed Men’s Softball Night League provides players with the opportunity to play on fields that many consider to
be among the finest in the country. From the friendly competition in each game to the ideal facilities, these night-time softball games have a lot to offer. Games will begin in April 2017 and will be held at either Theodore Roosevelt Park, located on West Avenue in Oyster Bay, John J. Burns Park, located at 4990 Merrick Road in Massapequa, Ellsworth Allen Park located at 45 Motor Avenue in Farmingdale or Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park located at 175 Washington Avenue in Plainview. The Men’s Softball Night League will feature
10 regular season games (two games per night once a week). The fee for registration is $650 per team plus an umpire fee of $830 per team, making the total registration fee $1,480. Two separate checks are required for payment. Registration is currently ongoing but will close on Friday, March 31st. New Facebook Page The Town of Oyster Bay recently established a new official Facebook page for the Town, as part of a revamped social media outreach program intended to keep residents up-to-date on the latest Town news, programs, and events, Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced. “I am thrilled to announce that the Town has taken this important step in today’s digital age
to establish a cohesive social media outreach program,” Supervisor Saladino said. “This Facebook page will help to keep residents up-todate with all the important going’s on throughout the Town, and will also provide an easy outlet for residents to interact with Town administrators to have their questions answered. It is my hope that you will use this page as an

COMMERCE PLAZA - On Monday, February 13th, three classes from Birch Lane Elementary school visited Commerce Plaza in Levittown. The goal of Commerce Plaza is to provide Long Island students with an immersive business experience to prepared them for the real-world workforce. Many of the students arrived in business attire and ready to work for the day. Each student was assigned a job and had real work experience responsibilities. They learned things like bookkeeping, assisting customers, making deposits at the bank, purchasing furniture for their office and managing a bank account. It was a wonderful experience for the children. Pictured is Mrs. Marocchi’s class, Mrs. Murphy’s class and Mrs. Coyne’s class.
Allison Robb’s fifthgraders mentored Erin Austin’s first-graders in a series of STEAM-related stations centered on Valentine’s Day at Central Boulevard Elementary School in the Bethpage School District. Stations included students working together
to make heart houses out of marshmallows and toothpicks; valentinethemed slime; heart shapes out of Legos; boats that can hold the most candy hearts; and frozen baking soda hearts that react with vinegar. Not only did the activity serve to honor the special day, but it brought

Supervisor Anthony J. Santino announced today that the Town of Hempstead is actively recruiting lifeguards for the 2017 pool and beach season. Interested candidates can attend a screening program at Echo Park in West Hempstead on any one of the following three Saturdays: May 13th, May 20th and May 27th from 7 to 9:30 a.m. Lifeguard salaries start at $15 per hour. “We’re actively seeking to recruit lifeguards for our busy beach and pool seasons,” Santino said. “If
you are looking for a great place to work this summer, consider joining our team of dedicated lifeguards.” Candidates are asked to bring certification cards and a swim suit. Non certified persons will be considered for training. Lifeguard candidates must be at least 16 years of age and older. Employment is not guaranteed. The Town of Hempstead’s screening process includes evaluation of candidates in a 200-yard-swim. The Town of Hempstead currently operates 22 outdoor pools and 1 indoor pool. Four ocean beachfronts at Point Lookout, Lido, Lido West and Sands are also available to Town of Hempstead residents. Hewlett Point Park is the only Hempstead Town operated bay beach. Lifeguards who join the Town of
Hempstead will join an award-winning team that has been recognized by the United States Lifesaving Association (USLA). The Hicksville Middle School Robotics team, the Meteorites, recently competed at the First Lego Regional Qualifiers. Under the leadership of advisers Catherine Temps and Carol Anne Brucato, the team earned the Gracious Professionalism Award.
The award recognizes a team whose members understand that both friendly competition and mutual gain are possible on and off the playing field, and show each other and competing teams respect at all times. The theme for the
competition was Animal Allies, and students were judged on the performance of their robots with specified tasks, their project presentations and their core value presentations.

Over 100 Nassau BOCES Barry Tech students from the school’s Healthcare Classes came together recently for an anticyberbully workshop. Cyberbullying remains
a hot topic since recent reports claim that 43% of teenagers have been bullied online over the past year. These statistics prompted students and
staff to view the movie, Cyberbully, and reflect on how the issue effects them in their everyday digital lives. Students referred to a specially created Movie Viewing Guide as
they watched the video, which was followed by a discussion led by the school’s social worker, Nancy Tuck. The students were given a list of resources and information was distributed about cyber bullying, its effects on others and what to do if you are a victim. “The film sparked conversation among our students,” said Barry Tech Assistant Principal Dr. William Poll. “Students talked about ways to handle cyberbullying situations, while our Social Worker provided resources and strategies for this
