Syosset Students Recognized Twenty students from the Syosset High School Model United Nations Club and 25 members of H.B. Thompson Middle School’s Model United Nations Club participated in the 46th Annual Metropolitan Model United Nations Conference held in December. Among them, eight students won awards, including three Best Delegate honorees and four Honorable
Mentions. Among them were two HBT students. More than 400 students from various Long Island high schools participated in 14 committees to address global issues that ranged from environmental crime to South China seas conflict. The keynote speaker this year was Congressman Thomas Suozzi, who stressed the importance of working
together to resolve complicated issues. Sophia Bae is the adviser for the Syosset High School Model UN club, and Jena Villalba and Heather Schulman serve as coadvisers for the HBT Model UN club. Congratulations to the following student award winners: • Best Delegate: Diya Chadha (junior) –

HOPE CHILDREN’S FUND
Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance
to succeed. Below, you will see a photo of Ian Mugambi, a 12 year-old boy in need of a sponsor. Ian lost his mother and sister and currently resides at this orphanage in Meru. For further details on mentoring Ian or another child, please contact Aida Mann at AidaMann@optonline.com. Upon sponsorship, you will receive a photo and bio of the child you chose to sponsor. You will be able to write letters or send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages! Kevin and Aida often travel to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to come along so they can meet firsthand the child they sponsor. Growing up on Long Island, I realize it is easy to be misled into thinking everyone lives as we do, but that is not the case. Ian is much more than just someone in the photo on this page; he is one of many people across the world who is reaching out for help. Although there are plenty of ways we can spend $1 a day, using that money to mentor a child in need is truly a priceless experience!

A Unique Boutique with a Selfless Cause Amanda Munz, founder of The Fashion Foundation, started a non-profit in 2014 to sell fashion apparel at a reasonable price and, more importantly, to help provide students with school supplies. As someone who has always loved fashion, Amanda decided to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan. After receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Merchandising, she went on to receive a Master’s degree in Public Administration. While getting her feet wet in the fashion industry, she constantly took note of people throwing fashion apparel in the garbage, as well as samples building up that designers didn’t know what to do with. This inspired her to start The Fashion Foundation, where she utilizes those pieces by selling them at a reasonable price, and then pays it forward by using the profits earned to purchase school supplies for students to help them succeed. Today, Munz runs a showroom in Farmingdale, as well as a pop-up showroom in Manhattan, where new apparel can be purchased for a fraction of its retail cost. Spreading Love For the school’s monthly Thoughtful Thursday activity, students of Central Boulevard Elementary School in the Bethpage School District created valentines and wrote acrostic poems to spread happiness and love to residents of local assisted living and nursing homes this Valentine’s Day. Established a few years
ago, Thoughtful Thursday is a schoolwide community service initiative in which the entire school dedicates one Thursday a month to bettering the community through a project. The initiative reinforces the school’s message of “character builds success.” Students in grades K-2 colored Valentine’s Day graphics, including

cupcakes, hearts, cherubs and messages such as “Happy Valentine’s Day” and “Be My Valentine.” Third- through fifth-grade students wrote acrostic poems using the letters in “heart” to warm residents’ hearts and let them know Central Boulevard is thinking about them.
Grant Winner Old Country Road Elementary School’s thirdgrade teacher Christine Palmieri in the Hicksville School District is the recipient of a Target Field Trip Grant for the second
consecutive year. To enhance their science curriculum, this grant will pay for the entire third-grade class to take a field trip to the Queens Zoo. At the zoo, students
will engage in a handson instructional program about mammals and observe animals in their natural habitat.

To show their support for a healthy lifestyle, students and staff honored the American Heart Association’s National Wear Red Day for Women on February 2nd by
wearing red and tying ribbons to spell out the words Go Red on their fence. The school will continue to honor healthy decisions throughout the month of February.
Pre-K Registration The Syosset High School Human Ecology Department is once again accepting registration for its student led Pre-School Program. Any child who is 4 years of age and a Syosset resident, is eligible. The Child Study program uses a multisensory approach to learning. Current Syosset High School students who have completed the
necessary prerequisites in developmental psychology teach age appropriate curriculum to children enrolled in the program. They use a thematic approach in eight learning areas. The Pre-school program begins in mid-October and runs for the full year with a break in-between, following the school calendar. Classes are held
on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9:1511:15 a.m. Phone registration for the 2018-2019 school year program begins at 8:30 a.m. on March 5th and will continue until the program is filled. Science Olympians Congratulations to the Syosset High School Science Olympiad team “Scioly” for bringing home the gold at a recent competition. At the Nassau East Regional competition held at Wantagh High School, three different Scioly teams placed first, fourth and eleventh among the 43 teams competing. Team A won an amazing 20 medals, Team B won 14 medals and Team C won 11medals and overall, Scioly medaled in 20 of 22 events. This marks the first time that every Syosset build event received medals in regional competition. The build events comprise of building model size helicopters, wooden towers, cars, hovercraft among others.
Prior to regionals, the team scored successful victories at the Fayetteville Manlius High School invitational tournament, held in Manlius, New York. The same three Scioly teams combined to win 10 first-place medals, 7 second-place medals and seven third-place medals. Overall the three teams finished first-, fourth- and sixth-place, dethroning the 10-year champion host school in the process. In January Scioly won an additional three medals at the highly competitive Fairfax High School Invitational in Fairfax, Virginia. Science Olympiads provide challenges in various STEM disciplines, exposing students to
practicing scientists and career choices, as well as dynamic content experiences. Scioly is one of Syosset High School’s largest extracurricular group, with approximately 75 members. “Although we are well known for our academic achievements, this club has proven to be so much more than just an assembly of very bright young minds. Rather, it is a family,” said Scioly coach/ adviser Mildred Castañeda, now in her second year with Scioly. “I feel as though we have developed an incredible bond with each other. Last school year, we made so many memories that I am even more excited about what is taking place this year.”

Polar Plunge Set Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Louis Imbroto announced that caring Town residents will once again have the opportunity to be “Freezin’ for a Reason” and support Special Olympics New York by participating in the 5th annual Special Olympic New York Town of Oyster Bay Polar Plunge on Saturday, March 10.
The event will take place at Tobay Beach with registration starting at 9:30 a.m. and the plunge to begin at 11:30 a.m. Supervisor Saladino, who participated in last year’s event, stated, “Many of our residents are used to seeing beautiful Tobay Beach in the middle of the summer, but this event provides an enjoyable and charitable reason to begin the beach
season early this year! Participants will have an opportunity to prove their mettle and their compassion by diving into the chilly waters of Tobay Beach to raise funds for the athletes of Special Olympics New York.” Each year, Special Olympics New York Polar Plunges are held throughout the state to attract thousands of chilled souls to engage in
a fun and commendable fundraising event. All funds support Special Olympics New York’s programs and promote awareness of people living with intellectual disabilities in New York. On Tuesday, February 13th, residents in the Syosset Central School District approved Proposition No. 1, the Facilities Improvement Plan, of the district’s bond referendum by a vote of 821 yes to 292 no. Residents also approved Proposition No. 2 of the referendum, the Enhanced Safety and Energy Efficiency Plan, by a vote of 909 yes to 204 no. “The Board of Education and administration thank the community for their continued support,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Thomas Rogers. “The work included in both propositions will not only preserve the community’s investment in our schools, but will also address the items identified in our Five-Year Buildings Condition Survey, renovate our facilities and improve the quality of education for our students into the future.” Proposition No. 1
includes remodeling science classrooms and research labs at Syosset High School; renovating the high school’s athletic complex, including replacing the athletic field and adding a new eightlane track, relocating the softball field, and adding outdoor bathrooms and two additional tennis courts; addressing traffic safety issues at Baylis, Berry Hill and Walt Whitman elementary schools and Syosset High School; enclosing walkways at the South Grove Annex and the high school for enhanced security; installing air conditioning in all classrooms throughout the district and in the auditoriums at Harry B. Thompson and South Woods middle schools and Syosset High School; and replacing the weight room at Syosset High School to include additional bathrooms, locker rooms and a security corridor.
