The Charity of The Month for February is: Girls on the Run of Long Island www.gotrlongisland.org Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.
This organization also runs a program called Heart & Sole. This is their middle school program that meets the unique needs of girls in 6th-8th grade. Heart & Sole takes girls as a whole into consideration body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection - in a positive and structured space, where participants can learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy and stregthen connections. Running is incorporated into each lesson to encourage physical wellness. These girls also prepare for a celebratory 5K event at the end of the program. The upcoming spring season

As the cold sets in, they host a “Warm Coat Giveaway”, where hundreds of coats are beautifully displayed and those who need one can shop freely to choose which one is right for them. No questions asked and no one gets turned away. This past Christmas, the set up what was that of a toy store, both new and used toys were on display and many parents were able to come in and shop. To meet other immediate needs for its neighbors throughout the year, a back corner of the store serves as a food pantry. The shelves often have bread, cereal, baby food and snacks. Brittany and Debbie, however, don’t stop there. They have proactively and aggressively gone to many of our school districts to find the underserved, the hungry and those in need of assistance. They’ve teamed up with some districts to join various programs and are utilizing these opportunities to feed hundreds of hungry children each month. In 2015, a local grandmother suddenly had to take on full-time care of her young granddaughter and for this, she was not prepared. Debbie Loesch and her daughter Brittany turned to social media to simply ask random people if they had the items that were needed and if they be willing to donate them to this woman in her moment of need. Various people within certain Facebook groups did not take well to these requests and the motherdaughter duo caught some very negative backlash. Believing that there would be many people willing to help if they knew of the immediate need, they created a new Facebook Page: Angels of Long Island. With the purest of intention, neighbors helping neighbors, once again they asked friends and family “Can you help this woman, a neighbor, in need?” Quickly about 200 people connected to their page and within one week the woman’s needs were meet. And so it began, Neighbors Helping Neighbors. Knowing there were so many others in need, Debbie and Brittany started collecting whatever people were willing to donate. They stored it throughout their house and yard. As the
stockpile grew, they used a trailer, sheds, tents and tarps to not allow anything to go to waste knowing at some time, someone may need it. They were now consistently matching up many people to what they needed and knew they were on to something big. In 2017 Angels of LI opened a 3800 square foot thrift store located at 350-23 E. Main Street in Patchogue. Now they have all their donations displayed in a store setting. When someone is in crisis or moving from crisis to something more stable, they can come in and simply shop for what they need. Bed linens, furniture, pots and pans, clothes (within some guidelines of course) but all for free! The thrift store is open to the public to come purchase items as well. The money raised from sales directly supports the many other services their outreach program provides. With the help of their now over 60,000 followers, the Patchogue location hosts a few annual events all in line with their mission. The Angels, who are run solely by volunteers, turn their entire parking lot into an extension of the store. They set up a system for families during their “Back to School” event to go through and choose many items such as backpacks, school supplies, clothes, and shoes.

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Tom Hand invites residents to enjoy the Town’s 46th Annual Rotational Art Exhibit Program. The unique program integrates arts and community and allows local artists to display their work in local libraries, banks, government offices and local businesses on a monthly “rotational” basis. “Through this program, local businesses around the Town help to spread a passion for the arts by joining in and supporting local artists. This provides business patrons with the pleasure of viewing artwork in a setting they normally wouldn’t,” stated Councilman Hand. “Local businesses that participate in the Rotational Arts Exhibit program have a unique opportunity to position themselves at the intersection of industry and art, which ultimately benefits all involved. This program not only features the diverse works of new artists, but also some of the most accomplished artists from the area.” While the 2020 schedule is set, the Town of Oyster Bay is already looking for new artists and businesses to participate in next year’s program. Beginning in the fall, novice and experienced artists alike will have a chance to see their artwork approved
and entered into ‘rotation’ where it will be displayed throughout the Town of Oyster Bay in 2021. The program is free for both artists and businesses. Donations are accepted through March 1. Westy has also provided free storage space for the items collected and will assist in transporting them to the Prom Boutique. Random Acts of Kindness Day Town Councilwoman Laura L. Maier and the Town Board proclaimed ‘Random Acts of Kindness Day’ in the Town of Oyster Bay as Monday, February 17th, a nationallyrecognized holiday. As part of this Random Acts of Kindness initiative, the Councilwoman recognized deserving individuals who made a difference in their communities. “With people often rushing through their daily schedules, many busy with work and family obligations, it’s easy to forget that even the smallest acts of kindness can make
a huge difference,” said Councilwoman Maier. “Something as simple as paying a positive compliment, telling someone how you feel about them or saying ‘thank you’ can change somebody’s day for the better. We should all strive to be more kind in our everyday lives.” The Councilwoman recognized Massapequa Park resident Amy Recco, together with Massapequa residents Michael Dell’Anno and Gregg Thomas, for their mutual efforts to collect over 1,000 toys for Cohen Children’s Medical Center through the Mighty
Mason’s Warriors Initiative. “Their effort was randomly and kindly put together after they learned that my three-year-old son, Mason, was diagnosed with B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia,” Councilwoman Maier added. “Mason has battled this disease like a true warrior, and before the holidays, he expressed a desire to hand out toys to his fellow warriors at Cohen Children’s Medical Center. Thanks to these kind-hearted residents, this became possible.” The Councilwoman and Councilman Lou Imbroto further recognized
Plainview resident Jay Asparro, who ran 100 miles over 24 hours in November and raised nearly $100,000 for the Long Island Alzheimer’s and Dementia Center. Asparro took on the initiative in memory of his late grandmother, Ann Asparro, who died of Alzheimer’s. “Not only is this an incredible athletic accomplishment, it is also an inspirational humanitarian achievement,” said Councilman Imbroto, noting that the national ‘Random Acts of Kindness Day’ has gained popularity in recent years as many
schools, businesses and communities have joined in the initiative. “Our children are taught kindness in schools, and sometimes we adults need to be reminded that simple positive actions can go a long way,” Councilman Imbroto added. “The goal here is to create a ripple effect and inspire others.
