Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Laura Maier invites residents to submit photos taken in the Town of Oyster Bay to be considered for use in Town publications. “Our residents recently received their 2021 Town calendar, which is filled with photos submitted throughout the year depicting people, places, community events and scenery throughout our Town,” said Councilwoman Maier. “We accept photos for the calendar, as well as other Town publications, including our website and brochures.” Councilwoman Maier noted that photos should be taken within the confines of the Town of Oyster Bay.

Paul is a WWII Army Air Force veteran who fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima, where he served as the chief mechanic in charge of a P-51 Mustang and the three pilots assigned to fly it. Paul is a true American hero who remains active in veterans affairs and volunteers at Vet2Vet, a peer support group program, where he participates in discussions with veterans and acts as a mentor. Paul also has been known to be spotted singing and dancing at the Plainview Y. Councilman Hand joined with Paul’s family and friends to wish him a very happy birthday, thank him for his service, and that he continues to enjoy life and all of God’s blessings.

Tender Loving Cats to the Rescue Tender Loving Cats, a non-profit, a Long Island no-kill kitten and cat rescue run entirely by volunteers, experienced a boom in families stepping up to foster kittens and friendly adult cats over the past year due to the pandemic. This led to many more cats and kittens coming into the adoption program from the streets and finding homes. However, the need for foster families is ongoing. “Fostering is fun, rewarding and saves lives,” said Marge Goldin, a volunteer for the organization. “During ‘kitten season’ which runs April through October, Tender Loving Cats and other rescues get more requests for kitten placement than can be handled. But the number of kittens that can be saved is limited only by the number of fosters available.” Tender Loving Cats manages all the medical needs of the cats/kittens and provides assistance and support throughout the process. Once they are old enough and socialized, Tender Loving cats uses social media to find them

forever homes. No cat or kitten is adopted before they are spayed or neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations. Goldin says that Tender Loving Cats is always in need of volunteers to assist in working 2-hour shifts in the two adoption centers that the organization runs out of two PetSmart locations in North Babylon and West Babylon. “This past year has been especially challenging, as the number of homeless cats has risen, whether due to people losing their jobs and not being able to care for their cats anymore or moving to other locations and leaving their cats behind,” Goldin said. “We are stretched to the limit, but we are determined to save as many cats as possible. We have a motto at Tender Loving Cats that we rescue the mistreated, save the injured and love the abandoned and we try to do just that.” Occasionally Tender Loving Cats is faced with situations where cats or kittens have serious medical challenges. Blindness, deafness, injury, illness or special

medication needs present themselves. Recently, as part of a widespread initiative trying to manage the cat population at Hofstra University, a volunteer took on the responsibility to foster a kitten born missing its back legs. The volunteer, Claudia Cannam, a Hofstra law student, is currently looking into getting the kitten a prosthesis. Rescues the mistreat Tender Loving Cats has a Trap-Neuter-Return program that targets the feral cat explosion on Long Island. Help for ferals is available in the form of trap rental and assistance with trapping. The rescue also can offer financial assistance to low income cat parents seeking to neuter their pets. The Plainview Water District would like to remind residents that water main breaks occur more often during the winter months, but are a completely normal experience for this time of year. Fortunately, the District has a highly trained staff that is capable of quickly addressing these potentially emergency situations to a degree where nearby residents may not even know a break has occurred. “Water main breaks are an unfortunate reality in any area that experiences extreme cold, and Long Island certainly qualifies,” said Marc Laykind, chairman of the Plainview Water District. “The good news is that we in the Plainview Water District have an experienced staff that responds to breaks 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to minimize any potential interruptions to your water supply as much as possible.” As the case with all coldweather climates, water main

breaks are an unfortunate reality as they typically occur when there is movement in the soil surrounding the water pipes or a freeze/ thawing condition. Water mains are installed below the frost line; however, when the soil shrinks or swells it places pressure on the pipes causing a break. Though the length of time to repair a leak varies from incident to incident depending on its severity and how quickly the leak can be located, PWD employees are trained to repair all types of breaks efficiently, quickly and safely. “Water main breaks present an opportunity for residents to experience a drop in water pressure or discolored water,” said PWD Commissioner Amanda Field. “Luckily, both of these are temporary as our dedicated crews react quickly to each break and do whatever they can to limit potential interruptions to our residents’ water service while the repair is being

made.” When water service is restored, residents may notice air in their pipes and the water may be discolored. The discoloration is not harmful, but can stain laundry. If you experience discolored water, let the cold water run from a faucet or

tub at the closest area to your incoming service line for a few minutes or until it clears. “While we have systems in place to learn about main breaks shortly after they occur, there are situations where they are not easily detected,” said PWD

Commission Andrew Bader. “Anytime someone suspects there may be a water main break in their neighborhood, they should never hesitate to contact us and report the situation. The quicker we can locate a break, the quicker we can respond to it, and the quicker the issue

can be resolved. While most main breaks are not dire emergencies, they can lead to one if left unattended.” The Plainview Water District asks for residents’ help in reporting potential main breaks. Residents that notice areas of wetness along the curb, bubbling of water in the roadway or unexplainable icy conditions are encouraged to contact the Plainview Water District immediately at 516-9316469. However, what was once a relic of the past has now become an innovation in entertainment, the drivein movie theater. The drive-in movie theater is nearly as old as the automobile itself. While today, there are about 300 drive-in theaters across the country, many more are popping up wherever there is space. Indeed, Walmart recently announced more than 160 of its parking lots will be converted into drive-in movie theaters around the country and many small businesses are doing the same. “A drive-in movie is the ideal event for anyone with a car because they can get out for a drive to enjoy a common experience with friends and family while taking appropriate social distancing precautions,” says Rah Mahtani, marketing communications manager

Free Drive-In Movies Return to Hempstead Town

The nostalgia and magic of drive-in movies returns for a third installment to Town Park Point Lookout for a special “Winter Break” film series in February. As many schools across America’s largest township will be on a one-week hiatus for the annual “winter break,” between February 12th and February 21st, Supervisor Don Clavin and the Hempstead Town Board invite residents of all ages to enjoy a week of free entertainment at Town Park Point Lookout from the comfort and safety of their vehicles. Extending the Town of Hempstead’s ongoing efforts to provide safe, COVID friendly entertainment throughout the summer, fall and now into the winter, Supervisor Clavin and the Town Board are excited to provide families with a fun option while children are home for a week in the middle of February. Presented by Supervisor Clavin, along with Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, Councilman Bruce Blakeman, Councilman Anthony D’Esposito, Councilman Dennis Dunne, Sr., Councilman Tom Muscarella, Councilman Chris Carini, Town Clerk Kate Murray and Receiver Jeanine Driscoll, the Town of Hempstead’s Winter Break Drive-In Movie series will feature a variety of films for all ages and interests. “The Town of Hempstead

was among the first municipalities to put together safe and socially distanced drive-in movies and concerts during the summer, fall and now deep into the winter in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Supervisor Clavin. “We are thrilled to continue our efforts with the Winter Break Drive-In Movie Series, and invite residents to come on down to Point Lookout and enjoy a film from the comfort and safety of their vehicles.” The Town of Hempstead has successfully adapted many town events to a drive-thru format. In addition to drive-in movies and concerts earlier this year, the town has hosted drive-thru awards ceremonies for veterans, firefighters, boy scouts, graduations, little leagues and much more. All movies will be hosted at Town Park Point Lookout (1300 Lido Boulevard, Point Lookout), and will be open to Town of Hempstead residents only on a first come, first served basis. Options for Community Living, Inc. received a $5,000 grant award from Sterling National Bank Charitable Foundation. This award supports Options housing programs for homeless individuals and families living in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Through housing and case management programs, Options helps more than 2,400 Long Islanders annually. The need for affordable housing and supportive services for vulnerable Long Islanders has been made even more apparent during the COVID-19 pandemic. Job loss and food insecurity has placed additional stress on many families, especially those with low-incomes, chronic health conditions

and limited resources. “Our housing programs help people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless access and maintain decent housing,” said Yolanda RobanoGross, Chief Executive Officer at Options for Community Living, Inc. “For people already struggling, COVID-19 has been devastating. Any physician in the community can request a consultation from NYCBS’ palliative care physicians. Dr. Hardoon is a graduate of Stony Brook University where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Theater Arts with a Minor in Biology. He obtained his Doctor of Osteopathy from West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his internship and residency in the Department of Medicine at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn. Dr. Hardoon completed his fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, and for the past 3.5 years was a Palliative Care Attending Physician and serves as Assistant Professor of Medicine at Albert Einstein School of Medicine. “Where you live shouldn’t determine your access to the best

Gift Of Health & Inspiration (GOHI): The Gift Of Health & Inspiration program includes a free tote bag, which is designed to be a supportive companion to the newly diagnosed cancer patient. The tote bag is filled with items to assist with your mind, body and soul. The items are nurturing, organic and holistic. They are given to patients at Good Samaritan and St. Catherine’s. Scholorship Programs: The BBCC offers scholarships to Babylon Township high school seniors who have had a parent or legal guardian with a personal breast and/ or gynecological cancer history. An essay must be submitted to be in the running for a scholarship! Vision Of Hope Garden (VOHG): There is a VOHG that this coalition started that is located on the southeast corner of Babylon Town Hall in Lindenhurst. Engraved bricks can be purchased in memory or in honor of someone who has battled breast or gynecological cancer and they will be installed in this garden. Bricks are available for engraving and installation at a cost of $50 each. The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) was founded in 1993 by three friends who lived in Babylon. Determined to fight against breast cancer by raising awareness and educating women, the BBCC with their dedicated volunteers undertook the task of completing a demographic survey to ascertain the incidence of breast cancer in Babylon. From this, a volunteer driven grass-roots organization grew, which serves the entire Township of Babylon, including those with all gynecological cancers in addition to those with breast cancer. Today they provide direct patient services and support to help ease the burdens that breast and all gynecological cancers put on patients and their families/caregivers. In addition to assisting in the basic needs of those battling cancer, they also reach out to the community at large, providing educational programs to encourage healthier lifestyles, which would decrease the still very high instance of these cancers in our community. Please note, if you do not live in this township, you can still reach out to the BBCC to find out who in your area can be of help to you. Below is a list of all of the programs that the BBCC offers. Lend A Helping Hand (LAHH): This unique patient service program provides much needed stress relief for Babylon Township women undergoing treatment for breast cancer and all types of gynecological cancers, as well as their families confronting diagnosis and ensuing treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation. Some of the services this program offers include house cleaning, transportation to/from medical appointments, financial assistance, child care, massage therapy, meal preparation and more. Pink & Teal Exercise Program: This exercise program is designed to help women regain flexibility, stamina and strength following breast or gynecological surgery and/or

Residents Encouraged to Donate Blood To help hospitals meet the ongoing and pressing need for blood during the coronavirus pandemic, Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson and Councilman Tom Hand remind residents that a Blood Collection Drive will take place on Monday, March 15th from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville.

All donors will receive ‘Free Blizzards’ vouchers for Dairy Queen, which can be redeemed at their Massapequa, Levittown, Huntington or East Northport locations. Councilwoman Johnson stated, “You can save lives by donating blood this March at the Hicksville Athletic Center. Blood supplies have dwindled during this COVID-19 health

pandemic and are critically needed for local hospitals to meet the demand and continue saving lives. Please consider participating in this blood drive on March 15th.” Appointments are preferred for the Town’s Blood Drive. Social distancing and sanitary protocols will be in place to maintain the health and safety of all donors.

To qualify as a blood donor, a person must between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that volunteers eat well (low

fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. Councilman Hand added, “It’s quick, easy, and safe to donate a single pint of blood which can save up to three lives. If you have family members or friends willing to donate, please ask them to support our effort this year, as this initiative is more vital than ever to help make sure that our
