ollowing their reading of inspirational literature, sixthgraders at Hicksville Middle School in the Hicksville Public School District created “Thinking of You” poetry cards for United States soldiers stationed at Bagram Airbase in Afghanistan. Prior to creating the cards, students spent several weeks reading poetry, including classic works such as “Hope” by Emily Dickinson, and popular contemporary music from top artists such as Adele.

Woodland Celebrates Third-graders at Woodland Elementary School in the Hicksville Public School District celebrated the 2016 Chinese New Year - the Year of the Monkey - by marching in a parade
through the building while displaying festive masks. The parade, which culminated the students’ unit on China in the social studies curriculum, was followed by a meal consisting of traditional
Chinese dishes. The celebration gave students the opportunity to showcase their artwork for their peers, and also taught them about the customs of one of the world’s largest populations.
Smiles for Soldiers Following their reading of inspirational literature, sixth-graders at Hicksville Middle School in the Hicksville Public School District created “Thinking of You” poetry cards for United States soldiers stationed at Bagram Airbase in Afghanistan. Prior to creating the cards, students spent several weeks reading poetry, including classic
works such as “Hope” by Emily Dickinson, and popular contemporary music from top artists such as Adele. Students then drafted their own poems on their iPads from a range of topics as part of their poetry portfolio, and chose one special poem to send overseas. Digitalized symbols matching students’ poem themes were also created to further
entertain the troops. “Music with themes that are part of our everyday events also inspire students to share their emotions with soldiers who risk their lives for our country,” said teacher Annette Mazziotti. “[The] students are passionate about sharing their lives with soldiers through their poetry.”

The Bethpage Water District Board of Commissioners William J. Ellinger, John R. Sullivan and John F. Coumatos are proud to announce more than 200 Bethpage School District students participated in the District’s annual poster contest entitled, No Bethpage without Bethpage Water. The students have been working on posters of their own design since the beginning of the school year and have officially submitted their entries to the District. The contest was designed to encourage education in regard to the community’s water supply. “We are overwhelmingly proud of the support from our community, schools and their participation in this year’s poster contest,” said Board of Commissioners Chairman William J. Ellinger. “We look forward to judging this year’s posters and seeing what a new group of students has to say about conserving their water supply.”
This year’s poster contest challenged Bethpage fourth grade students to answer the question, “When do I use water the most and why is it important to conserve water?” The program encourages students to reflect on their daily water usage and determine ways their habits could be changed for the better. Commissioners Ellinger, Sullivan and Coumatos will judge each poster and select the top three submissions per elementary school that portrays the most innovative ways to conserve with the best designed poster. “We believe it is important for members of the community to learn about their water supply,” said Board of Commissioners Secretary John F. Coumatos. “This educational effort starts with our children. These students represent the future of Bethpage Water. With their new ideas and interest we can inspire the plant operators and
commissioners of the future.” “We thank the Bethpage School District for recognizing the importance of water conservation and promoting this lesson in the classroom,” said Board of Commissioners Treasurer John R. Sullivan. “Everyone, no matter what their age, can make a difference in protecting our water supply. It is the best way to come together as a community to make positive impact and protect our water supply.” The winners will be honored by the District in June with an awards ceremony. It’s here! It’s finally arrived! The moment you all (well I and my Human) have been waiting for! My very first birthday in my bowl, celebrated this past weekend with my Human family. Who would’ve thought this day would come… Of course, in Betta years, that probably makes me about 47. Not to mention the countless days… months… years… I spent languishing in that tiny Tupperware container they kept me in at the pet store. But, ever since February 16th, 2015, the day my Human adopted me, all has been well. There was a party, with dinner, and even a few presents! What does one buy a Betta, you ask? Well, there was the pre-Birthday/Christmas gift of a brand new tank – complete
with a filter and a light and everything – which my Human has yet to transfer me into… something about not wanting to “traumatize” me without consulting with the “pet experts” at the store first. I haven’t received a scheduled moving date as of yet. Speaking of, I’m still patiently waiting to be taken on that shopping spree I was promised back in August for my six-month birthday. All the sales that have come and gone… just think what fancy toys and plants I could have accumulated by now! I must have at least enough for a small castle saved away. And pretty gravel… and maybe a leafy hammock to sleep in… and a seashell to decorate… Tiny brain, big dreams. The one thing I didn’t get was a fishy friend to play with. I don’t need anything fancy like me; perhaps just a small
shrimp or a snail to keep me company, and maybe vacuum my bowl now and then. Those long hours spent waiting for my Human to return home each day are awfully boring. There are only so many laps a Betta can swim around his plant, only so much gravel to push from one corner to another. Ah, but enough complaining. I’ve decided to turn over a new fin for my new year and focus on being positive and loving toward my Human, my Grammy and any other visitors who might like to visit and gaze upon my beauty. (Hey, I didn’t say I was going to take up modesty.) ‘Til next time, thanks to all the readers for their birthday greetings. And to my Human family, thank you for the best first birthday a Betta could hope to have. Here’s to many more!

Library Media Specialist Michelle Phillips and technology teacher Dan Zabell at John F. Kennedy Middle School in the Bethpage Union Free School District have been facilitating a Makerspace Monday program during
lunch periods for sixththrough eighth-grade students. Defined as any space where students can gather to create, invent and learn, the pair purchased Snap Circuits and LittleBits, as well as Origami paper,

crafting supplies and books to create a designated Makerspace in the library. This haven has been attracting approximately 30 students each week, who come after finishing lunch in the cafeteria to be challenged creatively.
Third-grade classes at Robbins Lane Elementary School in Syosset participated in an interactive workshop about Chinese culture provided by singer/songwriter Patricia Shih. As an extension to the curriculum, Shih performed original
songs that incorporated Chinese words, used hand gestures to lead students in movement and conducted a game in which students identified Chinese artifacts. Shih also shared stories, history and known superstitions of China. Students had the opportunity to play

instruments dressed as characters from Shih’s stories, as well. As a finale, all of the students took part in the traditional ribbon and lion dances in celebration of the Chinese New Year, which is the year of the monkey.
