Town Hosts First-Ever Lunar New Year Celebration

To ring in the Chinese New Year of the Tiger, Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Tom Hand hosted the Town’s first-ever Lunar New Year Celebration at Town Hall. Held in partnership with the South Asian Advisory Board and numerous ChineseAmerican Community Groups, the event featured

traditional Chinese decorations, cuisines, and cultural rituals, in addition to a ceremony honoring leaders of the ChineseAmerican Community. “It was my honor to bring this amazing holiday of the Lunar New Year to Town Hall for the first time in our Town’s history. Together, we celebrated the beginning of the Year of

the Tiger, which represents individuals who are brave, competitive, unpredictable, and confident,” Supervisor Saladino said. “That’s why we chose to honor many Chinese-American Community Groups at this event, as their efforts to educate our residents about the Chinese culture and share their rich heritage reflect these

values and are immensely enriching to our Town.” Some of the Groups, Chambers, and Associations that were recognized include the Chinese Associations of Jericho, Syosset and Plainview; the Long Island Chinese American Association; Sitan Tai Chi and Martial Arts; New York Asian Arts; Theta Math

Club; the South Asian Advisory Board; and the Nassau County Office of Asian Affairs. Community Leader Ruka Anzai of Jericho was also honored for her dedication to protecting the quality of life in her neighborhood and tireless work to better our Town for all residents. “I thank all of the residents who attended

this event, as well as Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman who shared in our most festive and historic celebration. It provided a wonderful opportunity to deepen our knowledge of the diverse cultures that make up our town, and I look forward to the Town hosting future celebrations,” Supervisor Saladino concluded.

Nassau County Legislator Carrié Solages (D - Inwood) is partnering with the Nassau County Assessment Review Commission (ARC) to host free virtual community tax grievance workshops on Wednesday, February 16, 2022, 2 p.m. and Thursday, February 24, 2022, 7 p.m. to inform residents about how to challenge their property taxes online. During these virtual workshops, taxpayers who disagree with the assessed value of their property can learn how to navigate the online grievance process. to offer two new tax filing options for taxpayers,” said Ever Martinez, Community Development Relationship Manager, Bethpage. “Although prepared and e-filed by the taxpayer directly, last year we were able to test the programs and most found them to be very easy to navigate. We are confident this year’s taxpayers will as well. The entire process is very easy.” Martinez continued, “And for those that want Bethpage’s trained volunteers to prepare and e-file their tax returns, we recommend they schedule appointments sooner than later as there are a limited number of appointments available.” Bethpage VITA volunteers will also educate eligible working families about the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) while preparing tax returns. The EITC is an antipoverty program available to four out of five eligible Long Island households and could put an extra $6,728 into the hands of deserving Long Island families. Credit amounts are based on income levels, filing status and other factors. “For 19 years Bethpage has worked to help the community receive free fax filing assistance and the tax returns and credits they deserve. These are the types of services that make the most impact on an individual and a family, and the kinds of services that Bethpage is proud to provide,” said Robert Suarez, Assistance Vice President, Bethpage. In 2021, Bethpage completed 776 VITA tax returns through its first virtual VITA program, and helped secure IRS total refunds of over $1,200,000. Bethpage also helped secure $217,181 in child tax credits in 202O, and $204,756 in Earned Income Tax Credits. Since the program’s inception in 2004, over 25,042 individuals have filed their tax returns through Bethpage, resulting in

$27,752,294 million returned to the Long Island community. Youth Ice Hockey Coaches Recognized

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Lou Imbroto honored ice hockey coaches Kathryn Griswold and Buzz Deschamps as ‘Employees of the Month’ for their exemplary leadership in managing the program, as well as their enthusiasm and dedication to the game and the youngsters they teach. As program Director, Buzz recruited Kathryn to serve as a coach and staff member; her foresight and passion has grown the Girl’s Hockey Program from 6 participants to more than 40. “Kathyrn, you have brought your exceptional management skills into all aspects of coaching here

Qualifying taxpayers will have three different ways to file their taxes for free this year, thanks to Bethpage Federal Credit Union, the only financial institution to offer the IRS’ Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program on Long Island. Now in its 19th year, Bethpage’s VITA program is open to all eligible Long Islanders, including nonBethpage members. The first option available to taxpayers is Bethpage’s Virtual VITA program where taxpayers will meet with Bethpage’s trained volunteers virtually, who will then prepare and e-file the tax returns. Virtual appointments will take place through April 7, 2022. Prescheduled appointments are required and can be made on Bethpage’s website at lovebethpage.com/vita. The second option Bethpage is making available through its ongoing VITA initiative is its Facilitated Self Assistance (FSA) program. Here, New York State Department of Taxation and Finance employee volunteers will help taxpayers prepare and e-file income tax returns for free, virtually during a series of virtual lab sessions. The employees who were from multiple Allstate locations, including Lynbrook, Levittown, Farmingdale, Syosset and Melville, combined their volunteer efforts by collecting a wide range of school supplies through an online giving wish list supporting Stuff-A-Bus. Little Coats Make A Big Difference Lee Avenue Elementary School in the Hicksville School District partnered with One Warm Coat, an organization that provides free coats to children and adults in need while promoting volunteerism and environmental sustainability. Students,

teachers and staff contributed to the weeklong drive and collected close to 50 coats for those less fortunate. Those who brought coats were encouraged to include a note of kindness in the pocket of each donated coat. In addition

to supporting a worthy cause, the organized effort reinforced the “Lee-O’s Law” of being kind to one another. “Lee-O’s Laws” are friendly reminders posted around the school for students to be mindful, respectful and kind.

Five Syosset Students Selected As Presidential Scholar Candidates

Five Syosset High School students have been selected as 2022 U.S. Presidential Scholar Candidates. Seniors Ethan Chiu, Tiffany Gao, Rohan Ghotra, Nathan Han, and David Wang were notified by the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program

that they qualified for one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students. Ethan, Tiffany, Rohan, Nathan and David are among the over 5,000 students nation-wide, and approximately 30 students from Long Island who will have the

opportunity to apply to become U.S. Presidential Scholars. Application is by invitation only by the US Department of Education’s Commission on Presidential Scholars, and candidates are selected based on their exceptional performances

on the SAT or ACT exams and their academic, artistic and technical accomplishments. The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 by Executive Order of the President to recognize excellence in education and to

honor some of the nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors. Approximately 600 Semi-Finalists will be announced in April. Up to 161 U.S. Presidential Scholars will be selected and announced in early May.

Clothing Donations Needed For Long Island Children

Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10. Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach

program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. The “store” – staffed entirely by

Legislator Lafazan Addresses Transportation Deserts For Seniors Nassau County Legislator Joshua Lafazan (D-Woodbury) stood with senior citizen advocates and community leaders to address the lack of transportation options for seniors in Nassau County. Lafazan called on County Executive Bruce Blakeman to expand the NiceBus contract and urged US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg to expand federal credits for seniors to be able to use services such as Uber or Lyft. Currently, federal credits are only available for driving to and from vaccination sites during the COVID-19 Pandemic. “Nassau County’s doorto-door bus system, AbleRide, only serves half of Nassau County residents,” said Lafazan. “The everrising cost of living in Nassau County is a burden to seniors and we should be doing everything with

our power to alleviate that burden by increasing all available options. By expanding Able Ride services to other areas of Nassau as well as expanding credits for seniors on rideshare apps like Uber or Lyft, seniors would be able to get to doctor’s appointments, the grocery store, and live happy, healthy, and independent lives, which is something to which we all strive.” “The lack of public transportation in the area affects not only the quality of life for older adults but their health and wellbeing,” said Judy Palumbo, Executive Director, The Life Enrichment Center of Oyster Bay. “Without affordable options, many people are unable to access the most asic of necessities, including transportation to medical appointments.” “There is nothing worse for seniors than being home

Stephanie Massimo was selected to perform Trombone 2 with the AllNational Honors Concert Band Ensemble and Hunter Cohen, who sings Tenor, was selected as an alternate for the All-National Honors

Mixed Choir Ensemble. Held on January 22-24, 2022, the ANHE virtual event included several rehearsals with six of the most prominent conductors in the United States and workshops with renowned clinicians. Each ensemble created a final, recorded performance that will be premiered online during the 37th NAfME Music In Our Schools Month® in March 2022. The ANHE performers represent collaboration and creativity in its highest musical form. During the 2020-2021 school year,

talented music students across the United States and overseas in military-base schools practiced diligently to gain a chair or part in their local, district and state music honor ensembles. Of those most elite high school musicians, 533 were considered to be the “best of the best” and were selected for the NAfME festival by audition. All-National Honor Ensembles consist of a concert band, symphony orchestra, mixed choir, jazz ensemble, guitar ensemble and modern band.

Residents To Submit Photos For Town Publications Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson invites residents to submit photos taken in the Town of Oyster Bay to be considered for future use in Town publications. “Our residents recently received their 2022 Town calendar, which is filled with photos submitted throughout the year depicting people, places, community events and scenery throughout our Town,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “We accept photos for

the calendar, as well as other Town publications, including our website, social media pages and brochures.” Councilwoman Johnson noted that photos should be taken within the confines of the Town of Oyster Bay. Digital submissions are preferred, but highquality photos may also be submitted. Emailed photos should be sent to photos@oysterbay-ny. gov. Printed photos can be submitted to the Town’s

Public Information Office, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay NY 11771. Residents should make sure their name, address, phone number and brief description of the photo are included with their submission. The photographer is responsible for the correct spelling of the names and subjects in the photos, as well as notifying subjects they may appear in a Town publication.
