$23,000 a year in savings* from lighting upgrades means more of this for Long Island.

For rebate information, visit PSEGLINY.com/Business

When the nonprofit Canine Companions requested a free energy assessment, we discovered that installing LED fixtures and other energy efficiency measures could save them nearly $2,000 a month. And with available PSEG Long Island rebates, the installation was affordable. Today, those changes have meant more funds for the mission of providing service dogs to Long Islanders with disabilities. And that means a better Long Island for us all. *Actual

Syosset Sophomore Selected For NYSSMA Piano Showcase

Syosset Sophomore

Aaron Liu was honored by the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) for his accomplishments as a pianist. He was one of a dozen students throughout the state of New York selected for the 2022

NYSSMA Piano Showcase held in Rochester in early December. At the showcase, Aaron performed Un sospiro by Franz Liszt.

To be chosen to play at this prestigious recital, a student must first achieve a score of 100 on a NYSSMA Level 6, which is the highest

level of difficulty that can be performed. Once a student has received this score, they must then submit an audition recording to a panel of musicians who then select the students for the Showcase.

Congratulations Aaron on this amazing achievement!

102 Pounds Of Food Donated

Long Island Cares, Inc., The Harry Chapin Food Bank gratefully acknowledge receipt of a total of 102 pounds of food donated by Fitteam-LA’s Dream Team.

Thank you for joining them in their mission to ensure that more Long Island children, families, and pets do not go hungry through our COVID-19 relief efforts. In addition to distributing more than 17 million pounds of food

to nearly 600 member agencies in the first 10 months of the pandemic, Long Island Cares seeks to heighten public awareness about hunger and provides skills training to foster self-sufficiency among the population that benefits from their services.

Many times hunger and poverty are hard to see. By outward appearances, we may not know a family is struggling or that a school age child does not have

enough food at home. People needing help are often filled with shame when they seek assistance and no matter how kind the food pantry worker may be, the worried parent keeps thinking, “I can’t feed my kids.”

On behalf of all of the children and families served by Long Island Cares, they are truly grateful for your support.

A major vocation for people with disabilities is cleaning, maintenance, janitorial, landscaping and snow removal work. The Corporate Source (TCS) is a Garden City-based non profit organization, which has vendor contract relationships to provide cleaning and maintenance for many of Long Island’s courthouse facilities.

As one example, the Su olk County Court Complex in Central Islip averages visits from more than 1000 people a day, whether it is judges, employees, lawyers, plainti s or defendants. Many of these visitors would not know that this 28 acre campus is cleaned and maintained in large measure by people with disabilities from The Corporate Source. In recognized annual surveys these workers are ranked “well into the ninety percentile”, performing above industry standard.

As a logical progression, in 2000 as construction and development of the D’Amato Federal Court House was completed, the Federal government awarded a janitorial contract to The Corporate Source. By 2003, they were so confident in the work of The Corporate Source that the contract evolved into Total Facilities Management including maintenance, landscaping and snow removal. More than 30 TCS employees work alongside a variety of federal employees, including 16 federal judges. Judges have been so impressed by their work that they held a lunch for these employees to express their appreciation for their commitment and outstanding performance. Michael Kramer, CEO of The Corporate Source, said “Our workers earned credibility for this enlarged opportunity. They proved that they could deliver when given a chance to do a job.”

Mr. Kramer mentioned that often cleaning, maintenance and janitorial tasks are perceived as “jobs of last resort” marked by high turnover and

a casual attitude. In contrast he said, “The workers provided by The Corporate Source are motivated when they are given these jobs. Sometimes this is their first position so they have a desire to prove what they can do. Among the 60+ TCS employees at the court complexes in Su olk, some have been employed since TCS first got the contract more than 20 years ago. The retention rate is well above the industry average and many employees are working there multiple years.”

TCS employees appreciate the stability that comes from work. Matt is a Heavy Equipment Mechanic at the D’Amato Federal Courthouse and over the past 23 years has worked his way up through the ranks of Janitor, to Project Worker and after taking additional training at BOCES, moved into his current role as a Mechanic. Matt is thankful for the support of his managers and supervisors who motivated and encouraged him to learn new skills and expand his role. He is grateful that work has given him the ability to provide for his wife and young children.

Richard, a TCS employee since 2017, reentered the workforce as a Janitor in the Su olk County Courthouse. Work not only helps him pay his bills and save for a new car, but also gives him a sense of pride and community. Richard is glad to complete his routine tasks and jump in when additional help is needed. “The people here are the best part of my job” said Richard. “Everyone is nice and I was really glad I got this opportunity to work for TCS.” His manager regularly hears compliments about his work and positive attitude.

Hicksville BOE Recognizes NYSSMA All-State and LI Scholar Artist student

At a recent Hicksville Board of Education meeting, Hicksville High School senior Brandon Baade was recognized for attending the NYSSMA All-State Festival held in Rochester, New York on Dec. 1-4 and for being recognized as a Long Island Scholar-Artist through The Long Island Arts Alliance.

This is the second year Baade was selected to play the euphonium as part of the All-State Symphonic Band. Participation at the All-State Festival is

based on the results of student participation in the NYSSMA Solo Festival from the previous spring. Baade’s All-State euphonium score was a perfect 100, earning him a spot in the All-State Symphonic Band. These ensembles are composed of the most outstanding student musicians from around New York State.

Additionally, Brandon was selected as a Long Island Scholar-Artist through the Long Island Arts Alliance (LIAA). He is one of only five

students island-wide to receive this recognition for music. The LIAA has developed the ScholarArtist Awards program to present outstanding high school-age artists to the public in monthly profiles that will appear in Newsday and on Newsday.com. Scholar–Artists are chosen from five disciplines: Visual Arts, Music, Theater, Dance, and Media Arts. Brandon will be featured in Newsday in May of 2023 for this recognition.

New Applications

For 9/11 Walls Of Honor

Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that applications are now available for families to add the names of loved ones to the Town of Oyster Bay’s 9/11 Walls of Honor which recognize all those with a connection to the Town who gave their lives and succumbed in their battle against 9/11 related cancers and illness. Each September, the Town unveils newly inscribed names into the Walls of Honor which recognize the family members, friends and neighbors lost to this toxic legacy.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “We remember and give thanks to those who ran into danger in order to help the victims of a cowardly act of terror. This includes first responders, downtown workers, residents, students and so many others with

cancer certified to be 9/11-related. The events of 9/11 continue to take our heroes and survivors – and members of our community will continue to face darker days ahead. We watch each week as more of these heroes pass, in an ever-increasing and unending number. Just as many of these rescue and recovery heroes raced to the Towers the first minute the plane hit, and stayed until the last brick was turned, their memorial stands with and lead us to those we lost that tragic Tuesday morning.”

Reports from the World Trade Center Health program indicate that we are approaching a terrible milestone, in which approximately 43,000 people are being treated for medical problems and 10,000 people have suffered cancers linked to the toxic exposure at

Ground Zero. More than 2,500 responders and others affected have succumbed to their illness.

The 9/11 Walls of Honor were constructed under an initiative led by Supervisor Saladino, the Town Board and a volunteer committee that includes retired FDNY EMS Lieutenant Bill Gleason, Retired NYPD Detective Tom Luberto, Deacon Dave White, Jericho Fire Commissioner Frank Sammartano, North Massapequa Fire Commissioner Ralph Raymond, Massapequa Fire Commissioner Justin McCaffrey and Rescue & Recovery Worker Joseph Pinto.

Applications may be downloaded at www. oysterbaytown.com/ wallsofhonor.

Hicksville Water District Receives Chamber Of Commerce’s 2022 Community Achievement Award

The Hicksville Water District (HWD) is proud to announce that it has been awarded with the Hicksville Chamber of Commerce’s 2022 Community Achievement Award. This annual award, which was presented to the HWD at the Chamber’s annual Holiday Dinner on December 7, honors local individuals and organizations who make Hicksville a better place to live and work for all its residents.

“It is an honor to have been considered by the Hicksville Chamber of Commerce for this award, said HWD Chairman Nicholas Brigandi. “Everything we do at the Hicksville Water District is for the betterment of our community. We take pride in working hard to serve our residents the top-quality water they deserve, and it is gratifying to be recognized for this work by an organization as distinguished as our local

Chamber of Commerce.”

The HWD launched several new projects in 2022. The District cut the ribbon on its Plant 5 treatment facility in May, which is now equipped with two Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) systems and four Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) filters, all of which represent the most advanced and effective water treatment technology available. This brought the District up to eight running wells, which is more than any other water provider on Long Island. Treatment installation work is also continuing at the District’s Plant 8 site, which is expected to be up and running in 2023.

Also beginning in 2022 was a large-scale water main replacement project in parts of the HWD’s southeast portion. With water mains dating back to the 1950s, the District seeks to get ahead of any problems

Town Awards $1 Million In Grants To Small Businesses; Encourages More To Apply

the current distribution system in this area might present in the future by completely overhauling its infrastructure. The HWD has already completed two of this project’s four phases, and by the time the final phase is finished, residents will be able to reap the benefits of 14,000 feet of new water main, 25 fire hydrants and 320 water services from the District’s water main to the curb shut-off valve.

“This award was granted because of all the improvements to the District, providing good, clean water to the community and making sure that everything is up-to-date with modern standards,” said Hicksville Chamber of Commerce President Charlie Razenson. “Looking upon the safety and purity of the water is paramount not only to the community as a whole, but especially to the children of the community and keeping them safe.”

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with Councilwoman Michele Johnson, Councilwoman Vicki Walsh, Town Clerk Rich LaMarca and Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato to officially award the first $1 million dollars of grant monies available to local businesses and not for profits through the Oyster Bay Forward Program. Oyster Bay Forward offers up to $5,000 to small businesses and non-profits finally impacted by the COVID pandemic, with a total of $4.5 million available.

“After a year-plus long pandemic and now facing an economic recession, small businesses need help and we’re pleased to offer these Federal funds to boost small business owners and not for profits,” said Supervisor Saladino. “There is still funding available, and we encourage all business owners and non-profits to apply for funding to help them recover losses from the pandemic and keep their operations moving

forward in the Town of Oyster Bay.”

The ‘Oyster Bay Forward’ Grant Program is open to businesses that employ up to 50 full-time equivalent W-2 employees as well as sole proprietors. Additional eligibility criteria:

o Applicant must be the principal (i.e. majority owner);

o Entity must be a forprofit business, or 501c3 or 501c19 non-profit organization, with annual revenue between $35,000 and $5 million;

o At least 60 percent of non-profit expenses must have been programmatic in 2019;

o Applicant must be in operation at the time of application and have been in operation prior to January 1, 2021;

o Must have fewer than 50 full-time equivalent W-2 employees;

o Certification and demonstration of economic hardship due to pandemic; and

o Not be in default or arrears on past or current federal and state financing or funding programs.

“Grant monies can be utilized for a variety of purposes, including expenses that helped mitigate hardships caused by the pandemic,” said Councilwoman Vicki Walsh. “These could include the purchase of inventory and supplies, rent payments, utilities, property taxes, lease or purchase of equipment, as well as operating and emergency maintenance. We encourage all businesses and non-profits to sign up today.” Applications are processed through the National Development Council (NDC) – who was retained by the Town to administer the Oyster Bay Forward Grant Program. Additional eligibility criteria, including required documents, as well as applications for eligible business and non-profit organizations are available at TOBForward.com, where interested parties can also view an informative webinar further detailing the application process.
