The Charity of The Month for February is: Girls on the Run of Long Island www.gotrlongisland.org Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.
They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This year’s 5K event is scheduled for Saturday, June 6 at Hofstra University, where over 1000 individuals will run, volunteer or spectate to celebrate! Their upcoming spring season will begin the week of March 16th and is shaping up to be their largest season yet!

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson today announced that residents looking for fun activities to fill their week of winter recess need look no further than the Town’s Ice Skating Rinks – outdoors at Marjorie Post and Syosset-Woodbury Parks and indoors at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage. Beginning Sunday, February 16th, and lasting through Friday, February 21st, the Town’s three rinks will be offering special public session schedules throughout Presidents’ week, providing kids who are off school a fun-filled wintertime activity. “During Presidents’ week when most schools are closed, the Town’s ice rinks will be open and offering a special modified
schedule with public sessions to accommodate families who are looking to enjoy ice time with their children,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “I encourage anyone who enjoys ice skating and is off from school or work during Presidents’ week to take advantage of these special public sessions, and enjoy a staycation right in their own backyards!” The outdoor ice rinks are located at Marjorie Post Park, Unqua and Merrick Roads in Massapequa, and at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, 7900 Jericho Tpke in Woodbury. The Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center is located within Bethpage Community Park at 1001 Stewart Avenue, in Bethpage. Modified public session

YES Community Counseling Center Receives $9000 Grant Award

YES Community Counseling Center is pleased to announce it has received a $9000 Community Partner grant from United Way of Long Island. The funding will support the expansion of delivery services to residents of southeastern and central Nassau County. In addition to enhancing our support services to children and families, this funding will also be allocated toward Commerce Plaza, the Children’s Business Center. Commerce Plaza offers children in the 5th grade
the opportunity to develop their financial literacy skills and learn about the world of business through hands on business simulation. “This funding provides YES with the opportunity to better serve the children and families of our community and to enrich their lives in many aspects. We are grateful to United Way and those who have contributed who recognize the value of charitable giving to help others,” said Jamie Bogenshutz, Executive Director of YES Community Counseling Center.

Paws Of War Helps American Soldiers Bring Home Dogs Being deployed to Afghanistan can be dangerous and stressful for our service members. Some of these service members rescue stray dogs and befriend them. When it’s time to head back to the United States, the last thing they can think of is leaving the dog behind to fend for itself. One soldier, Sgt. Dominick, is desperate to bring his dog, Jonsey, back home with him. “After these dogs are rescued, they develop a special bond with our service members. These dogs will not leave their side and become very attached and loyal,” explains Dori Scofield co-founder of Paws of War. “There’s no way they can leave them, so we do everything we can to help them bring the dog home with them. We need all the support we can get from the public in order to be successful with these efforts.” Army Sgt. Dominick, who is stationed in a remote area
of Afghanistan, first spotted Jonsey when the starving puppy was eating burnt trash outside of his camp. He took the puppy in, fed him, and the whole unit fell in love with him, which brought them joy. He named him Jonsey, and the dog grew to feel like a part of his family. Now that he will be heading back to the United States, he can’t bear to leave him behind. Stray dogs in Afghanistan have a very rough life and often times are subjected to cruelty. Desperate to bring him back home with him to live out his life and be a part of his larger family, he turned to Paws of War for assistance. The organization has a program in place that helps service members bring their dog home after being deployed to the Middle East. While they are always quick to help do what they can, they can’t do it alone. In order for Paws of War to be successful at bringing
a dog back to America from Afghanistan, they work with Nowzad, the only official animal shelter in Afghanistan, and get financial support from public donations. Lifeguard Employment Opportunities Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh announced today that the Parks Department is accepting applications from qualified, certified individuals interested in working at North Shore beaches this upcoming summer season. “We invite responsible and experienced lifeguards who are up to the challenge of protecting our residents while working at one of our beautiful beaches to apply now for this summer season,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “Town lifeguards provide an invaluable
service and have helped save countless lives.” Town lifeguards are hired for the summer season, which runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Positions are available at Tappen Beach in Glen Head, Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay, Stehli Beach in Bayville and at Centre Island Beach. “There are many benefits to working as a lifeguard at one of our beautiful beaches,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “Having a summer job as a lifeguard helps shape confidence and selfesteem while learning the
importance of teamwork and building leadership skills!” Applicants must be a minimum of 16 years old, possess a current Nassau County Grade 2 Lifeguard Certification and a current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. Oyster Bay Town Councilman Tom Hand invites residents to enjoy the Town’s 46th Annual Rotational Art Exhibit Program. The unique program integrates arts and community and allows local artists to display their work in local libraries, banks, government offices and local businesses on a
monthly “rotational” basis. “Through this program, local businesses around the Town help to spread a passion for the arts by joining in and supporting local artists. This provides business patrons with the pleasure of viewing artwork in a setting they normally wouldn’t,” stated Councilman Hand. “Local
businesses that participate in the Rotational Arts Exhibit program have a unique opportunity to position themselves at the intersection of industry and art, which ultimately benefits all involved. This program not only features the diverse works of new artists, but also some of

Students at PlainviewOld Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School (POBJFKHS) have been working on something dynamic. POBJFKHS is one of the very few high schools on Long Island that offers guitar as a music class - most schools just offer the standard orchestra, band and chorus electives. Music students that are enrolled in guitar as a music elective have recently completed a semester-long project of building their very own guitars.
Michael Rodgers, Director of Music & Performing Arts at John F. Kennedy High School, and a guitarist himself, was walking through a guitar shop one day and saw a guitar getting some modifications when he had the idea to offer ‘building your own guitar’ as one of the projects that students could complete over the course of the semester. “I thought this would be a great combination of technology meeting the student’s passion for music,” said Mr. Rodgers.
“When I brought the idea up to the students, they were all for it and couldn’t wait to get started.” The only materials students received was the wooden body of the instrument itself. From there they had to make cuts to the body, place the frets, sand everything down, measure the pressure, oil the neck, and solder the guitar. After crafting their guitars, the students performed with their handmade guitars at a Board of Education meeting.
